Trying to Meet
in August
Weshta, (Sylvester Sam)
sylvester.sam@inshuckch.com
In August things happened that
prevented us from hosting a full
discussion on Berries. Meetings
were cancelled or given less
attention. The gatherings that
happened were more social than
business. People who regularly
attended were busy.
The In-SHUCK-ch Nation lost an
elder and as with honored people
we pushed our agenda aside. The
date for travelling and service was
unknown so we just waited for
word, but everyone was there for the
family. The death was hard to deal
with, but everyone helped ease the
pain.
In August we looked at a book
developed by Shawn Gabriel:
“Berries/ Sqwel”. He compiled
it in English with Ucwalmicwts
names included. The book was well
received and we will find a way to
get it into the hands of those who
missed the gatherings. The members
read the book and we did not receive
much input as we were dealing with
other issues.
Our meetings that did take place
were less attended and were used
more for socializing, but the
members did receive the Berry
book. There was confusion as to
purpose of the Mission meeting as
I invited the family to come and
Chilliwack was booked, but they
We could give excuses for why
Road Updates
Here is a brief update on the road
construction planned for this fiscal
project between Ministry of Forests
and the Lower Stl’atl’imx Tribal
Council at 36.5 km – 37.7 km (1.6
Ministry of Forests will be closing
bids for construction in flooding
areas between 23.4 km – 24.91 km
Change in
Management
for Tsek
July 26, 2012
Passal, (Allen Gabriel)
allen.gabriel@inshuckch.com
Dear In-SHUCK-ch Nation Citizens
Re: Management of Tsek Hot
Spring and Campground
The Sea to Sky Onsen (SSOI) has
been managing the Tsek Hot Spring
and Campground since April 1,
2009. The operation standard at
Úcwalmicw
Tsek is now comparable to other
professionally managed public
bathing facilities in BC. The vast
majority of visitors have been
co-operative and accepting of
the changes at Tsek. While some
resistance to change was expressed
initially, it lessened over time.
Visitors have begun to respect the
property more and the number of
visitors has increased. In 2011,
there were 8,434 visitors to Tsek
which included a 40% increase in
First Nation visitors. The noise and
security control of the facilities
has improved to the point that it is
similar to those at other BC Park
campsite operations. Some of the
improvements include:
• a reduction in late night parties
and trespassers;
• a reduction in alcohol
consumption that is consistent
with consumptions observed at
BC Park Campsites;
• a reduction in violence and
property damage;
• a transformation to a familyoriented
destination;
• an increased respect of the
property;
• increased property maintenance;
and
• improved amenities.
Despite the improvements to the
property, they inevitably come at
a cost. Since the daily operations
have stabilized, In-SHUCK-ch
Development Corporation (IDC)
will now be implementing a new
management structure that will
result in operational efficiencies
to help pay down the expenses
incurred. More specifically, IDC
will be contracting Robin Trethewey
to manage the Tsek Hot Spring
Photo.soure:.http://www.johnharveyphoto.com/TwoHot-
Springs/BlueTubWithBearLg.jpg
and Campground effective August
1, 2012. Robin is no stranger to
the property and has ties to the
community. We look forward to
working with him in the future.
Respectfully,
Remembering
the Wagon Road
Erin Gibson
egibson@unbc.ca
My name is Erin Gibson. I am an
anthropologist from the University
of Northern British Columbia
documenting the wagon road that
went from Port Douglas in the south
to Pemberton in the north. This
project documents the life history
of this route, from the distant past
through to today. Collecting stories
and experiences from people who
have travelled the route themselves
or know of people who travelled
the route is an important part of
this project. While I have had the
opportunity to speak with many of
you in person I have also set up a
blog so that people can share their
stories and comments on the wagon
road electronically. A link to this
blog will be available soon on the
In-SHUCK-ch, Xa’xtsa websites as
This year’s In-SHUCK-ch Days has
come and gone, and it was a great
success. Thank you to everyone that
participated.
We had a few new workshops this
year, from the pine needle basket
demonstration to the Dakota House’s
inspirational workshops. There were
also 10 people that made rattles this
year and participated in a ceremony
on Sunday. As I walked around it
looked like everyone was enjoying
themselves. It was nice to even see
people sitting and socializing as well
as those enjoying the workshops.
It was powerful watching people
make drums, learn our language,
learn about the traditional plants that
can be found locally and used for
medicinal purposes and to showcase
our culture for our guests and the
younger generation.
Thank you to everyone who helped
In-SHUCK-ch Days Go Green!
This was second year of our green
initiative and it was a great success.
Half of our participants brought their
own dishes, cups and bowls.
This year was a lot of fun; it just
keeps getting better year by year. I
have posted pictures from the event
on the In-SHUCK-ch Days facebook
Waste Reduction at Paqulh Camp
The future community leaders, the
next stewards of the land, were
gathered at Paqulh for summer
camp. It is great opportunity for the
kids to reacquaint with friends and
relations, for some swimming in
the hot weather, and to reconnect to
the tmicw (land) and the nxekmen
(ways).
When invited to come out to camp
to talk about recycling how could I
say no?
We talked about how reducing,
reusing, and recycling can help
with a sustainable future by using
fewer resources and taking up less
land in landfills. We talked about
the fourth “R” - re-thinking the way
we produce waste. We demonstrated
how the bag of garbage that Cole
is holding can be reduced by
returning, reusing, and recycling.
The result is demonstrated by
Robbie, Wayne, and Cole (above).
The reward was watermelon for all.
I offer my congratulations to Sylvia,
Roxanne, Rita and Wayne for giving
the kids a great opportunity.
Q: What did you learn in school
today?
A: Not enough, I have to go back
tomorrow!
Residential
School — 60
years later
I attended St. Mary’s School in
1950 at 10 years of age. However,
they could not find my records from
September 1950 – August 1951
and September 1951 – August
1952. Their records only show that
I attended from September 1952 –
August 1959.
The two paragraphs below are
excerpts from my daughter Lucinda
Gabriel’s (Jones) thesis when she
was doing her teacher’s course. She
is now a teacher.
— Angus Jones
***
My dad is sixty-five years old and
I wonder, “Did he really survive
the residential school?” or, “Is his
real life/soul lost and buried at the
residential school?” and, “What we
are seeing, is it really just a hollow
form of Angus Jones; a product of
residential school?” and, “Why do
I wonder such a thing?” He lives
alone; out in the woods. When we
want to visit him, we have to drive
a bumpy, dusty road, to a secluded
area. He never visits us.
***
All of us ran and gave our Poppa
Angus a hug, we were crying, crying
for his childhood, forever lost,
forever stolen. We were crying for
his courage to survive those eight

S t s e p q w 2 0 1 2 • 1 8
long, horrific years at the residential
school and to come back home to
live his life on the res again. And we
cried; for now we finally understand
why our Poppa Angus Jones lives
his life the way he does; we finally
understand why he chooses to live a
simple life.
Our Poppa Angus finally has a
warm smile, his face glowed with
kindness and love as he said, “It
was an experience I’ll never forget,
but my life at residential school has
made me the hard-working man I
am today. I live a simple life, I don’t
have electricity or running water,
what you see here is everything
you need to live. This is how my
grandparents lived and they were
always happy.”
After another hug, this one longer,
we said, “WE LOVE YOU POPPA,
thank you...”
***
This is a letter Angus received
Aboriginal Affairs and Northern
Development Canada that he asked
to share:
July 26, 2012
Mr. Angus Jones:
I write today in light of the
settlement you reached with the
Government of Canada as a result
of the abuse you suffered at the St.
Mary’s Indian Residential School.
As stated by the Prime Minister of
Canada during the June 11, 2008
Statement of Apology to former
students of Indian Residential
Schools, “the government
Úcwalmicw
recognizes the consequences of
Indian Residential Schools on
Aboriginal culture, heritage and
language…[and] the government
recognizes that the absence of an
apology has been an impediment to
healing and reconciliation.”
On behalf of the Government of
Canada and Aboriginal Affairs and
Northern Development Canada, I
wish to apologize to you and your
family for all of the pain that you
and your family suffered as a result
of your attendance at St. Mary’s.
I recognized that you have carried
this burden for far too long and
the burden is properly ours as a
Government, and as a country.
You have shown considerable
courage and dignity in coming
forward to talk about your extremely
personal and painful experiences.
I hope that by recounting these
very painful experiences, you have
a measure of comfort which will
allow you and your family to move
forward with your lives.
Yours sincerely,
