long, horrific years at the residential
school and to come back home to
live his life on the res again. And we
cried; for now we finally understand
why our Poppa Angus Jones lives
his life the way he does; we finally
understand why he chooses to live a
simple life.
Our Poppa Angus finally has a
warm smile, his face glowed with
kindness and love as he said, “It
was an experience I’ll never forget,
but my life at residential school has
made me the hard-working man I
am today. I live a simple life, I don’t
have electricity or running water,
what you see here is everything
you need to live. This is how my
grandparents lived and they were
always happy.”
After another hug, this one longer,
we said, “WE LOVE YOU POPPA,
thank you...”
This is a letter Angus received
Aboriginal Affairs and Northern
Development Canada that he asked
to share:
July 26, 2012
Mr. Angus Jones:
I write today in light of the
settlement you reached with the
Government of Canada as a result
of the abuse you suffered at the St.
Mary’s Indian Residential School.
As stated by the Prime Minister of
Canada during the June 11, 2008
Statement of Apology to former
students of Indian Residential
Schools, “the government
Úcwalmicw
recognizes the consequences of
Indian Residential Schools on
Aboriginal culture, heritage and
language…[and] the government
recognizes that the absence of an
apology has been an impediment to
healing and reconciliation.”
On behalf of the Government of
Canada and Aboriginal Affairs and
Northern Development Canada, I
wish to apologize to you and your
family for all of the pain that you
and your family suffered as a result
of your attendance at St. Mary’s.
I recognized that you have carried
this burden for far too long and
the burden is properly ours as a
Government, and as a country.
You have shown considerable
courage and dignity in coming
forward to talk about your extremely
personal and painful experiences.
I hope that by recounting these
very painful experiences, you have
a measure of comfort which will
allow you and your family to move
forward with your lives.
Yours sincerely,
Michael Wernick
