Residential
School — 60
years later
I attended St. Mary’s School in
1950 at 10 years of age. However,
they could not find my records from
September 1950 – August 1951
and September 1951 – August
1952. Their records only show that
I attended from September 1952 –
August 1959.
The two paragraphs below are
excerpts from my daughter Lucinda
Gabriel’s (Jones) thesis when she
was doing her teacher’s course. She
is now a teacher.
— Angus Jones
***
My dad is sixty-five years old and
I wonder, “Did he really survive
the residential school?” or, “Is his
real life/soul lost and buried at the
residential school?” and, “What we
are seeing, is it really just a hollow
form of Angus Jones; a product of
residential school?” and, “Why do
I wonder such a thing?” He lives
alone; out in the woods. When we
want to visit him, we have to drive
a bumpy, dusty road, to a secluded
area. He never visits us.
***
All of us ran and gave our Poppa
Angus a hug, we were crying, crying
for his childhood, forever lost,
forever stolen. We were crying for
his courage to survive those eight
