His amazing achievements on theracetrack were surpassed when he wentto stud and there is hardly a dog in thiscountry that does not contain himsomewhere in its pedigree.El Galo was named Australiangreyhound of the year for 2008 and ofcourse we have to congratulate our ownReg Kay for being named Trainer of theYear. It was great to be a <strong>Queensland</strong>er.You will already know that El Galo wasbred and did his early racing in <strong>Queensland</strong>.Director Chris Williams has been toRockhampton to inspect the track andfacilities being made ready for the club’sfirst TAB and Sky covered meetings.Chris found only a couple of minormatters that needed to be attended tobefore the meetings which will incorporatethe Rockhampton Cup series.I recently spoke to club presidentDarren Taylor and he told me the club hadgone out of its way to find moresponsorship for races during the carnivaland extra prizemoney will be on offer.THE industry will now be well awareof GQL’s “show cause” request to theCairns and Mackay race clubs. This is part of a restructuring of racingin North <strong>Queensland</strong>.Both clubs were given the issues theyneed to address that have been of concernto the Board of GQL and they have untilMay 6 to respond with written submissions. As we pointed out to the clubs, this is adifficult issue but one that must beconsidered for the future of North<strong>Queensland</strong> racing.I would like to take this opportunity topoint out that the same concerns we havetoday, were felt as far back as 1998 whenthe draft strategic plan was prepared forthe then GRA Board. That strategic plan recommended theclosure of a number of clubs in North<strong>Queensland</strong>. They were Mount Isa, Cairns,Lower Burdekin (Ayr) and Mackay. The strategic plan looked at acomparison of average greyhound meetingand field sizes for a two year period. Itshowed Mackay had an average of 8.3races per meeting. It currently has anaverage of 6.61 races per meeting.Cairns’ average was 6.8 and currentlyis 6.95.The 1998 strategic plan also looked atperformance levels based on operating andfinancial information for a two year periodwhich placed Mackay 12th and Cairns 13thof the 13 clubs in <strong>Queensland</strong>.Also, the northern clubs no longer payfor grading of fields or stewards. They have centralised payment ofprizemoney, GQL provides $7500 eachyear for administration, 4.9% of on-courseturnover is topped up, computers andaccounting software is provided, freightrebates are given and nomination fees wereCANINE COUNTRYPET FOOD1/22 Babdoyle St, Loganholme. It isevident particularly in late 2008 and early2009 there was not sufficient nominationson a regular basis to fill the seven TABmeetings. The industry to meet its contractualobligations with UNiTAB and Sky Channel, race meetings need to attract full fields, offer a level of prizemoney competitivewith other states and an incentive for peopleto continue to invest and reinvest in theindustry, GQL is looking to strategicallyposition greyhound racing in North<strong>Queensland</strong> to ensure its continued viability. With all this in mind, the Directors havedecided the Tuesday night meetingcurrently staged by the Brisbane Club atAlbion Park will be moved to Townsville. The funds currently allocated to thismeeting will remain in the south-eastcorner and be distributed over the remainingsix meetings.ENGINEERS have been given the goahead to undertake phase two of the geotechnicalstudy at Cronulla Park. The site is the planned new home ofgreyhound racing in south-east <strong>Queensland</strong>as a replacement for the loss of Parklands. The engineers provided a positive phaseone report to <strong>Greyhounds</strong> <strong>Queensland</strong>.They advised us there is some missingdata they need to satisfy the EnvironmentalProtection Agency, hence the need toundertake phase two.Phase two will involve drilling of boreholes on the site to monitor ground waterand investigate the environmental impactof leachate on it.Further soil testings will also beundertaken. We expect to have the results of thisphase two testing in June. The (May, 2009) Journal Page 2

Cairns, Mackay clubs asked to 'show cause'CAIRNS and Mackay clubs have beenissued with letters to show cause as to theirfuture operations as part of a restructuringof greyhound racing in North <strong>Queensland</strong>.The restructuring could see broaderSKY Channel coverage of <strong>Queensland</strong> andNorth <strong>Queensland</strong> meetings and greaterTAB involvement and support for meetingsin the north. If Cairns and Mackay clubs fail to showcause as to why their operations should beallowed to continue, deregistration wouldoccur from June 30 resulting in Townsvillebecoming the centre of excellence forgreyhound racing in North <strong>Queensland</strong>.“As Chair and a member of the Board,we have to act in the best interests of theindustry as a whole. Both Cairns and Mackayclubs are experiencing a continuation of alimited number of registered participants inthe region, low number of greyhound racingnominations, poor race day patronage and lowturnover,” said Kerry Watson, Chair of<strong>Greyhounds</strong> <strong>Queensland</strong>.“<strong>Greyhounds</strong> <strong>Queensland</strong> stronglybelieves that through consolidation of clubsin North <strong>Queensland</strong>, we can look tostrengthen the industry in a number of ways.“We have held high hopes over the past18 months that these clubs would be able toturn things around, and the Board hasprovided significant assistance throughconstant monitoring and encouragement.“Their future is in their hands.“Our commitment to North <strong>Queensland</strong>is to enhance and improve greyhound racingand to make sure Bundaberg, Rockhamptonand Townsville maintain a secure future.“We are striving for more support on anational level and increasing returns togreyhound owners and trainers, ensuringcontinued growth of the industry,” she said.Currently there is no TAB coverage ofgreyhound racing in North <strong>Queensland</strong>meaning the clubs are only able to gainlimited support from their local communities.Should Townsville become the North<strong>Queensland</strong> racing hub, it will become a SKYChannel venue and full TAB coverage willevolve making North Qld greyhound racinghighly accessible to all Australian punters.“This will be an industry milestone and asignificant step for regional <strong>Queensland</strong>,”said Watson. “These moves will ensure theindustry’s continued viability and growth,”she said.Cairns and Mackay clubs are due torespond in writing to <strong>Greyhounds</strong><strong>Queensland</strong> by May 30 where responses willbe seriously considered before finaldecisions made as to their future.Watson and fellow Director ChrisWilliams flew to North <strong>Queensland</strong> to briefboth clubs.Frequently Asked Questions relating torecent decisions of the Greyhound’s<strong>Queensland</strong> Board in relation to possibleclosure of clubs.1 WHICH CLUBS HAVE BEEN ASKEDTO SHOW CAUSE AND WHY?Cairns and Mackay have been asked toshow cause as to why their clubs should notbe considered for deregistration andpermanent closure.Under the Racing Act, there are a numberof issues causing the Board to consider theseclosures to ensure continued viability ofracing in North <strong>Queensland</strong>.Such issues include the limited number ofregistered participants in these regions, lownumber of greyhounds/breeding in theseregions, limited number of nominations/starters per meeting, the level of on-courseturnover is not sufficient to sustain the clubsinto the future, limited communityinvolvement, the standard of racing facilitiesare poor and will require significantexpenditure in the foreseeable future, and thefinancial situations of the clubs have been aconcern to the Board for some time.A LARGE amount of greyhound racingexperience, along with dedication to the job,has resulted in John Lippett beingappointed to the position of Chief Stewardat Rockhampton.Gary Wust and John have held the fortat Rocky, ably assisted by young BradWust and a number of trainee stewards. The boys have done an outstanding job.Gary wants to fulfil his dream ofcatching that meter long Barramundi, while Brad spends most weekends ridingbucking bulls at the rodeo. Both will assist on a casual basis asrequired in the future.Rocky is preparing for its Cup carnivalthis year with full TAB and SKY channelcoverage and it is all shoulders to thewheel.Heats of the Rockhampton Cup will beheld on Sunday May 3 with the final onWednesday May 6. A terrific support cardis planned for both meetings.WHILE in the north, Townsville Clubwill have full TAB and SKY coverage fortheir Young Guns final night on TuesdayMay 5.The Young Guns Series date waschanged by the Club to take advantage ofthe coverage. In addition, the Mackay Showgrounds isearmarked to be resumed by StateGovernment for affordable housing and theexpenditure to relocate the club would besignificant.2 WHEN WILL ANY FINAL DECISIONSAS TO THE FUTURE OF THESE CLUBS BEMADE?Mackay and Cairns clubs have been askedto respond in writing by close of business onMay 6.If unsuccessful in the submission, deregistration will take place from June 30.3 WHAT WILL CLOSURE OF THESECLUBS MEAN FOR GREYHOUND RACINGIN NORTH QUEENSLAND?Closure of these clubs will mean thatTownsville will become the centre ofexcellence for greyhound racing in North<strong>Queensland</strong>.Townsville will receive TAB and SkyChannel coverage, which will be an industrymilestone and a huge step for North<strong>Queensland</strong>. This will allow all punters tohave access to greyhound racing in this area. Those who choose to travel will benefitthrough increased prize money at Townsville,Danny RyanChairman of StewardsWHY does there have to be an unhappynote in my steward’s notes?Well this time trainers are parkingtheir vehicles in the HARNESS RACINGSTALLS!Can you believe it?Totally ignore the sign at the gate, theircars drip oil all over the cement and whowill pay if Blacks A Fake walks around thecorner, slips in the oil and falls over on thecement? Not only that, do you think LukeGatehouse and his committee won’t cry ifthey receive a clean-up bill from theharness crew.Further signs have been erected andcar park penalties will apply.Rockhampton and Bundaberg, along withabolishing nomination fees at these venues.4 WHERE WILL CAIRNS ANDMACKAY CLUB MEMBERS GO TO RACE& HOW WILL IT IMPACT ON THESEMEMBERS?Members of the Cairns and Mackay Clubalong with general Industry participantscurrently race at Townsville as they choose.Members of these clubs can exercise theirchoice to continue to race their greyhoundsat Townsville and benefit from theimprovements that TAB and SKY will bringto that Club.5 HOW WILL CLOSURE OF THESECLUBS IMPACT ON OTHER CLUBSTHROUGHOUT QUEENSLAND?Closure of these clubs will strengthen the<strong>Queensland</strong> Greyhound Racing Industry in anumber of ways. It will allow for widerexposure paving the way for greater localinvestment through the TAB on greyhoundracing in Northern <strong>Queensland</strong>.This will also allow for funding to bereinvested back into the industry by way ofincreased prize money along with theabolition of nomination fees.I WAS fortunate enough to attend theGolden Easter Egg at Wentworth Park. What a great promotion as the nightwent like clockwork from a patron’s pointof view. The race program was fantasticfeaturing the Egg final and a great effort byShadow Boxer running third in the stayersinvitation. No <strong>Queensland</strong> winners … perhapsthey miss the FINISH-ON LURE.The (May, 2009) Journal Page 36 WHAT CHANGES CAN THETOWNSVILLE CLUB EXPECT TO SEE IFDEREGISTRATION OF CAIRNS ANDMACKAY OCCURS?<strong>Greyhounds</strong> <strong>Queensland</strong> anticipates thatthe greater exposure of Townsville<strong>Greyhounds</strong> by way of SKY and TABcoverage would result in greater local interest. We predict a substantial increase in oncourse TAB turnover with local puntersinvesting into a greater pool.National coverage would offer Australiawide exposure to prospective sponsors thusallowing a greater bargaining power for theTownsville Club which should result in anincrease in sponsorship dollars.7 WHAT WILL THESE CHANGESMEAN FOR THE GREYHOUND RACINGINDUSTRY AS A WHOLE?The strengthening of racing in North<strong>Queensland</strong> should result in an increase inthe Local Breeding Industry. The certainty ofgreyhound racing in the North will gainmomentum following the introduction of TABand SKY coverage. The overall increase in prize money toNorthern Clubs will attract greyhounds fromthe South East corner of the State andNorthern owners will invest in better qualitygreyhounds to compete for the higher stakeson offer. The chance to regain their investment inracing stock will benefit all sections of theIndustry.8 WHAT WILL THIS MEAN FOR THEAUSTRALIAN PUNTER?Australian punters will, for the first time, have access to betting on races throughoutNorth <strong>Queensland</strong>.This is an industry milestone. This will result in a huge boost for thegreyhound racing industry.Glenda & JohnDartContact Glenda andJohn for all yourtrainingrequirements.(02) 667253140432 252209

Proposed RacingChangesBy now most licensees will be aware ofthe changes to the racing calendarproposed by <strong>Greyhounds</strong> <strong>Queensland</strong>.It is proposed that, from July this year,TAB racing will start on a regular basis inNorth <strong>Queensland</strong> at the Townsville track. In South-East <strong>Queensland</strong> we willconduct six TAB meetings, down from thepresent seven. In the Brisbane Club’s discussions with<strong>Greyhounds</strong> <strong>Queensland</strong> regarding thisproposal, we have made it very clear therewas to be no net reduction in totalprizemoney to South-East <strong>Queensland</strong>participants should such a move occur. This has been agreed to and the fundsfrom the Class 3 meeting and the two Class1 Mondays have been distributed acrossthe remaining six meetings.Under this proposal the weekly Class1prizemoney will increase on average by 3%,with <strong>Greyhounds</strong> <strong>Queensland</strong> now alsofunding the prize money for all Groupevents in <strong>Queensland</strong>.The Class 2 prizemoney allocation willincrease by approximately 20%, with gradedraces proposed to be $1000 to the winner. The Class 3 prizemoney allocation willincrease by approximately 30%, with gradedraces proposed to be $700 to the winner.Maiden prizemoney will also receive anLukeGatehouseincrease of 40%, with proposed prizemoneyof $600 to the winner. The proposal also aims to boostunplaced prizemoney.Prizemoney within races will berestructured on a ratio of 70%, 20%, 10% forthe first three placegetters, so there will besome movements within existingprizemoney to accommodate this ratio.Gold Coast CupSponsorAUSTRALIA’S largest independentprinting and office supplies company,Imagetec has signed as a major sponsor ofthe Brisbane Greyhound Racing Club. The company, which has operations inBrisbane and the Gold Coast, has securednaming rights to the Group 2 Gold CoastCup to be held on July 2 and 9 at AlbionPark.Imagetec’s commitment to the GoldCoast Cup is a great boost for the<strong>Queensland</strong> greyhound racing industry andin sustaining the future of this race, whichis a key event not only in <strong>Queensland</strong> buton the national racing stageSuspension StatisticsInjury StatsTotal Injury SuspensionsMarch 1.31%2009 to date 1.78%2008 2.04%Injury Suspensions over 30 daysMarch 0.07%2009 to date 0.18%2008 0.21%Marring/Failing to Pursue/Unsatisfactory PerformanceFebruary 0.51%2009 to date 0.67%2008 0.87%A DECADE or more ago, Muriel Daltonwent on holiday in New Zealand. When she got home, she was agreyhound trainer. It was as easy as that.Muriel’s long-time partner TerryGuymer has been a dog man on and off fordecades. The pair live on three acres atWonglepong near Canungra.“There was a guy who walked past ourproperty every day with his dog,” saidMuriel. “Terry was helping him from timeto time. Eventually he just signed the dogover to us. I became a greyhound trainer.”Named Mulli Son (Your Attention-Playing Free), he won a dozen races aroundTweed and the NSW country tracks.“He was unbeaten at Kempsey,” saidMuriel. “He was just an average dog whocould gallop a bit. At Kempsey he could comefrom any box and win. He just loved theplace.”Muriel was hooked from the day MulliSon turned up at her home. And 11 years later she still is.“Terry and I have been together for 20years,” said Muriel. “He knows he comessecond behind the dogs. I just love them.”That’s probably Terry’s fault. From themoment Mulli Son walked into theWonglepong property, Terry has beeninstilling into Muriel that to get winnersyou must be dedicated. It has been a good lesson learned. No one likes tripping around thecountry tracks more than Muriel.“I just love the day out at those tracks,”she said. “Tracks like Moree, Kempsey andthe like.”Her first quality galloper was calledYahshua (Splinter Lad-Polly’s Desire)which she got from Steve Board.“Steve is a great breeder and dog manand his whole family keeps producingreally good dogs,” said Muriel.“Steve was going to retire Yahshua. Iasked him if I could take her home. I fell inlove with her straight away. She was one ofthose dogs who didn’t really take to men.”Yahshua blossomed under Muriel’scare, attention and love and landed the 2004Muriel's devotedto her dogsCasino Cup winning heat and final.“We won 23 races with her at Casino,Tweed, Moree … you name it.”Yahshua had a couple of litters but leftlittle of consequence. One, Del Mar, madethe final of the Brett Memorial at AlbionPark running unplaced behind Pinch Bar.Terry Guymer drives his own concretetruck but still finds time to run anexperienced hand over Muriel’s dogs.“Yahshua just loved him,” said Muriel. After Yahshua came a number of handydogs like Council Approved, Jumping Flashand then Ultra Jet another bitch Muriel gotfrom Steve Board.“We got her as a maiden who had racedonly a couple of times,” said Muriel. “Eventhough she was lightly raced she won ninefor us.”Ultra Jet (Eureka Man-Now Amigo) wasbeautifully bred. She was a litter sisterto Board’s Black Soldier,runner-up to Hotshot in aGold Coast Cup, andAlmost Perfect who wasthird to Ashigga in aShepparton Cup and afinalist behind Questionsin a Coca-Cola Cup atAlbion Park.Rapid Journey finishedsecond to Questions inthat Cup.This is the damline ofRed Mystique, RockingRomero, Mibecca andWiljarra. With such pedigreecredentials behind her,Muriel just had to get alitter out of Ultra Jet.She went to Elle’s Commando to producea bitch called Tia and her brother BigCanungra.“Terry names all the dogs and he loves togive them short names,” said Muriel.Tia won nine of her first 11 starts andwas 2004 Gold Coast greyhound of the year.Big Canungra was just that. At 40kgs hewas best on the big tracks at the Gold Coastand Capalaba.Tia’s first litter to Solve The Puzzleincludes an extra smart galloper called Vee.“We only had two pups from the litterand the other one died,” said Muriel. “Veewon his maiden at Casino but then had twobad falls at Albion Park and Casino threedays apart.“I thought we were going to struggle toget him back from that. He lost his confidenceand it took us a while for him to come right.”But Vee has done just that winningsince at Ipswich, Tweed and Albion Park.“He got a couple of rails boxes in a rowat Ipswich and that really helped hisconfidence. He won both,” said Muriel.Tia has a litter by Most Awesome juststarting to race. She produced two dogs andfive bitches of which Muriel kept three,Byron Miller and Peter Wilson buying theothers.“The two bitches Kee and Why have wontheir maidens at the Tweed and Kee won themaiden final with Why running second,”said Muriel.“Their brother Xia is 36kgs and he’llgo to the Tweed to start his career becausehe’ll want a big track.”Unfortunately Tia developed a tumor onher ribs and had to be put down recently.Muriel has Kee and Why to continuethe damline in the future.Muriel also sends a number of dogsnorth to Cairns club president EmmaO’Connor to race. One of those was Behind Blue Eyes(Just The Best-I’m Puzzles) a half sister torecord breaking, Group winningSuperman. The bitch was 17 races forEmma in Cairns and now Muriel has her athome waiting for her to come into season.“Terry does all the pedigree matching,”said Muriel. :”I do the rearing and playingwith the pups.”Muriel admits she can get into troublefrom Terry for spoiling her dogs.“I absolutely love them,” she said.“They are addictive. I spend more time onethem than I do on my housework. Our broodbitches are fed thesame meat we feed our racing dogs, and theyall get Advance kibble, just like the racingdogs.“The pups here also get Advance, but apuppy kibble the company manufactures.”The Robartson broodbitches are allowedaccess to a two-acre galloping paddock everyday, sometimes twice a day. They gallop aboutif they feel like it, don’t if they are not in themood.“We try to maintain a fitness in ourbroodbitches which I think is important whenthey are whelping, specially their stomachmuscles. Each of our broodbitches is fed anAroxine tablet daily to stimulate the thyroid,”said Dave. The daily gallop in the two-acre paddockcontinues right up to the time the bitches aredue to whelp, generally on their own thecloser they are to giving birth.“It ensures they maintain that fitness,”said Dave. Those bitches are kept with their pups inthe whelping box until about the fourth orfifth week after the birth. ”We believe thebitches have generally had enough by thenand the pups are starting to hurt by then,” hesaid.Dave is not one to believe in keeping hisbitches with her pups right up until they nextcome on season.“Our whelping boxes let out into a 20 footby 30 foot yard and the pups can venture outinto that when they can,” said Dave. “Fromabout seven or eight weeks of age they areallowed into a 20 metre by 6 metre yard wherethey start to stretch their legs and go for arun.“We particularly like to build up our pupswithin those first three months, get them solidwith all the minerals and vitamins they need… it’s all contained in the red meat and theAdvance kibble.”From three months they are put into 70metre by 20 metre paddocks that open onto atwo-acre paddock. In each of those two-acrepaddocks are a 450 litre tub that is filled withwater to allow the pups to frolic but moreimportantly cool down in during hot periods. From six months they are put into one ofthe three 80 metre by 80 metre holding yardsthat open onto a four-acre paddock thatcontains a large dam.“We leave the pups in these yards untilthey are about 14 months old, depending onhow many pups we have coming through andhow much room we have in the kennels at thetime,” said Dave. The pups are allowed access into the fouracrepaddock every couple of days and theRobartsons, Dave, Christine and son Toddare forever in playing with them, encouragingthem to chase behind a motorbike that pulls arope with a skin on the end.“We don’t use the motor bike much, justto get them started to chase and we find theypick up on it very quickly, maybe a couple oftimes a month,” he said.Feeding is started when the pups areready to wean from their mother. Sloppy mealsof kibble and mince ground up fed from thetime the pups are a few weeks old, ordepending on how many the broodbitch hasto feed herself. From three months of age the Robartsonpups are feeding a mixture of roo, beef, porkand chicken necks as bones.“We don’t feed chicken mince,” saidDave.A bucket full of Advance kibble is left ineach puppy yard all day, every day.“We believe having this kibble in the yardallows the pups to pick at the food as theywant and stops fighting over food.“We generally have four pups to apaddock and we like to see them have a kiloof meat each day, two-thirds of it is a red meatdiet. We never add anything to the food.“The pups get the protein they need fromTHE ORIGINAL AUSTRALIANNYLON PLASTICGREYHOUND MUZZLESApproved for racing in <strong>Queensland</strong>, New SouthWales, WA, SA & Northern Territory.Check the price against what you pay for wire!Ring Roger on 0403 025 429If no answer, leave name and messagewww.australiangreyhoundmuzzles.comBankcard, Mastercard or VisaThe (May, 2009) Journal Page 8

Chicken is fatty and will giveyou a fat pup. Fat kids don’t run and can’trun. Being fat affects the liver and we want toavoid any problems like that.“Our pups are solid without being fat.”He says his pups are never fed stews orvegetables.“I got a lot of ideas from the late AlexHauler the vet in Victoria,” said Dave. “I spoketo him often. That’s where the Advance kibblecomes in. It’s produced in Victoria. Why feedveges when the kibble has everything the dogneeds.”Dave says it is almost impossible to pickthe best pup from a litter even watching themclosely in the paddock every day.“Miss Hot Gossip was the standout inher litter and a real character, but High Earnerwas just another pup when that litter wasbeing reared. He was the smallest of the dogs.“And El Galo was not as outgoing as somein the paddock, but if something was goingon around the place, he was always the firstthere to investigate it,” said Dave. The Robartsons also like to make surethere is plenty happening about their propertyto get the pups used to different things whichwill help them settle and accept differentthings by the time it comes to going racing.“One of the most important things aboutrearing in <strong>Queensland</strong> is that pups must beable to cool off,” said Dave. “I’ve been told itis too hot to rear pups in this state, and that’swhere it is a must to have a dam in thegalloping paddocks for the pups.“In the wild a dog will run every day, allday. Our racing dogs are running every day… it’s the nature of the beast to want to keepactive. By letting our racing dogs out into apaddock the day after a race it helps get rid ofthe lactic acid build up from their race.“And the same applies to pups. Theyshould be able to gallop all the time.“If a dog doesn’t have access to water tocool down, then it won’t want to work.”Robartson says the secret to his breed’slongevity is the basics they get as pups, followed by the conditioning they receivewhen they first go into training.“We spend two months conditioning adog from the time he comes into the kennelsafter breaking in until his first trial on aracetrack,” he said. “It’s that earlyconditioning that produces tough dogs. ElGalo has raced constantly for a year withouta break.”The Robartsons also do as much earlyeducation as they can at home and will worktheir pups up the straight track to get themchasing. But no box work is done.“We let John Collins do that at Postman’sRidge,” said Dave.Manly Road Vet Hospital100% Strike Rate219Average Litter Size 7.84(Qld stud dog stats Dec Journal )* Artificial Inseminations withfresh, chilled or frozen semen 24hours 365 days a year.* Greyhound Semen Bank withover 40 sires in stock for sale. The Robartson worming schedule for hispups starts at one week old.“We give them the worming syrup everyweek from week one until they are weaned, then we worm with the syrup every twoweeks,” said Dave. “From three months ofage we use Ivomec every month. We find itthe best.”Lime is spread about the paddocks at theproperty every few weeks to help eliminateworms and fleas.Dave reckons many people have goodintentions about rearing their pups but cutback on costs, trying to do it as cheap aspossible. “You can buy chicken mince for 50cents a kilo. It’s high in protein but has noiron. Some of the kibbles being used are likefeeding cardboard to dogs,” he said.He says the number of injuries among thepups being reared on the property is minimal.“Miss Hot Gossip sprung a toe at ninemonths of age, but Larry Jocumsen stitchedit up and she raced all her life without anyproblems.”Dave is totally against “side-by-side”* Pregnancy Ultrasounds, checking foetal health anddetermining litter size.* Semen Freezingruns. “In the wild a dog doesn’t run up anddown for 70 metres."Those runs do more damage than theydo good. I’ve watched our pups here and theywill go around those four-acre paddocks 10times, turning to go every which way.“I also don’t believe in having paddocksthat are far too big. A pup can do too muchand take too much out of itself.”He says every litter his family has bred atChurchable has contained at least one gooddog, and often handy city class gallopers.“I believe a mating is 50-50 sire and dam,but I have never seen a good dog come outof a bitch that couldn’t run."Ask every breeder that bred a high classdog and there will always be a story aboutthe bitch’s ability.”He admits that every dog he breeds willnot become a champion like El Galo, Miss HotGossip or a High Earner, but by sticking to aproven recipe each and every pup will havethe chance to produce its best. It’s worked for quite a few years now, andthe Robartsons are confident it will continue.Manly Rd, Manly West,Brisbane. EIGHTY one-year-old Scotsman JimCrooks remembers it like it was justyesterday. As a kid in the 1930s he and hisdad James would set off on a motorbike to alocal flapping track. The thing about the trip was that dadpiloted the motorbike and Jim sat on the backcradling their greyhound Thick Black onthe way to race her.Twelve times in a row that bitch won, everytime arriving at the track on the back of theCrooks’ motorbike. The Crooks got their first car in the1960s but spent 30 years racing greyhoundsaround the Scottish shires. “I loved thosedays,” said Jim. “They were the best timesof my life.”Thick Black was named after a brand oftobacco sold in Scotland at the time.“I can remember walking two miles tothe track, trial a dog, and then walking homeagain,” said Jim.“If we had a distance to travel we wouldtake the double decker bus but we had to sitright up the front of the bus or the dog wasnot allowed on.”They were fun days that Jim looks backon with great memories.“We never bred a litter in those days,”he said. “If someone bred a litter he wouldshare a few around with friends. That’s howwe got a dog.”The Crooks lived in a coal mining villagecalled Quarter in the Hamilton area betweenGlasgow and Edinburgh.“There was a track in every village inthose days,” said Jim. “All you had to beatwas the bookie and the grader. Races wereworth about five bob in those days so you hadto punt and there was always plenty of bookies.“Everyone walked their dogs and you fedthem on whatever you could get, mostly breadand milk or a sheep’s head if you could getit.”How things have changed. Today, Jim andhis son Bill have been going from winner towinner, mostly with dogs named with theWitheren prefix. Bill buys or breeds them,Jim rears them, and Ron Ball trains them.Jim and Annie Crooks came toAustralian in 1963. Bill, the oldest, was 13at the time. They arrived with $20 in Jim’spocket and seven kids to feed. “Mum’s sisterLizzie had died in Scotland so mum and dadadopted her three kids and they came withus,” said Bill who has three brothers. The Crooks arrived in Sydney and stayedfor 18 months at an immigration centre. Billhad already left school to start work and helpfeed the family. From ThickBlack to aCreekRocketWithin 18 months the Crooks bought ablock of land and built a small, but brand newhome at Revesby in the Bankstown area.It was also to be the time of their firstAustralian greyhound. Old habits really dodie hard.In 1967 a friend of Bill’s bred a litter byLinen Kit-Tammit and Bill and his fatherbought two, one which they named LadyTammit.“When she was ready, we took her toMudgee and put $500 on her. We didn’t haveenough money to buy petrol to get home ifshe lost,” said Bill. Lady Tammit didn’t eventhough she gave the Crooks plenty to worryabout in the run.“It was a three hour drive to Mudgee,”said Bill. “She came out last in a 300 metrerace but got up to win by two lengths. Webacked her from 4-1 to start 7-4on favourite.”Jim said : “We had our hearts in ourmouths for a while. The bookies were payingus in dollar notes at the end. We cleaned themout”.“She was the keenest dog we have everhad,” said Jim. “She went on to win races atRichmond, Singleton and Bulli and even wonup to 790 yards at Dapto.”Lady Tammit won the night before Billleft to go to Vietnam. LadyTammit’s second dam Tiny City was also thethird dam of Sammie Sparrow.“We sold a dog from the litter to someItalian fella and the dog lived in the house allhis life,” said Jim. “He raced as Amarantowon 20 races at Wentworth Park and alsoran 26.50 at Harold Park when 26.40 wasthe record.“We won a few races with ours but notmany.” It was Lady Tammit's only litter. Not long after Jim and Annie moved toNambucca Heads and Jim became aprofessional fisherman. He’d never beenfishing in his life before he bought a boat andhead out to sea.Jim would spend 25 years fishing off theNSW coast and his son John, Bill’s brother, still runs the business today.Allan Wheeler was at his prime aboutBill and hisdad Jim with alitter of SurfLorian-OurAnnie pups(right).this time and Bill and Jim bought a couple ofpups from him. One would race as CoolleAnn (named after Bill’s mum). She wouldwin the Taree Cup and the Grafton StayersCup and a host of races.“She won by six lengths one night at Bulliand mum and I left the next day for a holidayback in Scotland with some extra spendingmoney,” said Jim.Busy working and building up an airconditioningbusiness, Bill drifted out ofgreyhound racing at this time, and Jim didtoo because he was always out at sea.In 2002 Bill and wife Diane came to<strong>Queensland</strong>, firstly at Benora on the GoldCoast. They wanted to semi-retire and it alsogave bill the opportunity to get back intogreyhound racing.“I bought some dogs,” he said. “OurAnnie was the first and we bought her as apup. While she was being reared SmokeyRocket won 15 races and Ima Barbie Too won10 both trained by Charlie Mifsud.”Our Annie proved difficult to get goingand that’s how Bill and Ron Ball linked.“Ron said he’d give her a try andeventually she won 10 races at Albion Parkand the Gold Coast. Ron’s been training ourdogs ever since.”“Our” is the right word because it’s beena Crooks partnership for the past five years.Albion Park Track History* One of the fastest sons of Brett Lee torace around Albion Park.* 1ST LOOK @ Albion trialled anamazing 29.96 sec* 2nd LOOK Albion won in a blistering29.88 sec (2 lengths outside trackrecord at the time). LEFT: Bill Crooks with a Shiokaze-Our Annie bitch about to join the RonBall kennel.ABOVE: Ron and Bill with their starsprinter Witheren's Girl.Jim and Bill never missed a race meetingat Wentworth Park and Harold Park inSydney when they first came to Australia. “Imiss Harold Park,” says Jim. “You couldback winners there because the best dogusually won.”He says today’s dogs are much finer anda different type of dog to those he was used toback in Scotland in the days of his youth.“They were hardy dogs, heavier and broader.Dogs of today are bred for speed and are muchfiner. The old Scottish dogs could sprint andstay.“It was nothing for them to win twodifferent races on a day, racing at twodifferent tracks, and often under two differentnames.”The Crooks also have hopes for a coupleof litters out of Our Annie. ”She is a halfsister to Sydney champ Miss Elly Mint. I gotfirst pick from Hughie Clark of the litterthat Miss Elly Mint was in. She was the lastpup left and had a bit of a white eye. She wentto Ray Watson and what a grand bitch shehas turned out to be.”Greyhound racing was a hobby to startwith when Bill and Diane moved to Canungra, despite his horrendous memories of the placeas a young man, but these days it’s muchmore.Jim and Annie moved to Witheren, just upthe road from Canungra, where Bill andDiane had bought a couple of five-acreproperties next to each other and decided togo into greyhound racing.“Diane and I needed someone to rear thepups and who better than dad,” said Bill. Jimis up at 5am and is still working in thekennels and pup yards until 7pm each day.The main property has five indoorkennels, two twp-acre galloping paddocks, and the propertynext door has five80mx30m yardsand a slippingtrack. RustyMcBride leasesthe property nextdoor and trains hissmall butsuccessful team ofdogs from there. The Crookshave taken off inrecent years, theirsuccess rate beinghuge. Stars likeWitheren’s Girl,Gozo Tessand now Ryan’s A Rocket have beensurrounded by plenty of dogs that have wonmore than their share of races.“Witheren’s Girl won 22 races and ran30 seconds,” said a proud Bill. “She was asgood as any of the starts she raced duringher career and spent most of her life in topgrade at Albion Park.”Jim Crooks remembers fondly the noveltyof greyhound racing in Scotland.“There were three different types of luresin operations at home when I was young,”he said. “The inside hare, the outside hare, and another at Galston that was a ball, something like a soccer ball, that was pulledalong in the middle of the track by a rope.“It bounced along the ground and thedogs had no trouble chasing it.”Only five-dog races were run in those days.Jim and Bill have a relative, WilliamCrooks, who is a contract trainer back inScotland.Witheren’s Girl has been mated toBombastic Shiraz and Gozo Tess (winner of22 races) to Token Prince. “We are pinningour future on those two bitches.”Bill’s semi-retired lifestyle allows himtime to spend with Ron Ball helping out inthe training, trialling and racing of the largekennel.“I’ve been going up lately and helping Ronlay his new swimming pool for the dogs,”said Bill. On one day foreman Mick Thrupp,Ron, Bill and Tom Noble laid 500 bessablocks in five hours.“I’ve been in theconstruction businessfor 35 years and I haveNEVER seen anyonework as hard as MickThrupp … and he’sgot cancer. He’samazing.”Bill recently wona Young Guns finalwith Ryan’s ARocket and now heand Ron have greathopes for a coupleof youngsters byBond and Surf Lorian thatare showing great potential. He and Jim are always in awe of Ron Balland his training prowess. “I’ve only ever hadone dog in Ron’s kennel that he couldn’t getto win a race,” said bill. “He’s the best thereis. I’d give up racing greyhounds if Ron evergot out of the game. THOMAS Lauga and his wifeMadeline didn’t need anencouragement award from theRockhampton club to keep theminvolved in greyhound racing. They are already devotedenough, even though 62-year-oldThomas reckons he “should knowbetter”.Thomas received theencouragement award at theRocky Club’s annual awards nightearlier in the year. Thomas, a shiftworker at nights, couldn’t attend. The Laugas have been bitten bythe greyhound bug since 1980 eventhough the training passion hastaken a back seat until the late1990s.Born in Rockhampton, Thomasmoved to Mackay when he was 16.He and Madeline were marriedthere and have two sons still livingthere and a daughter in Adelaide.“I went out to the dogs at theMackay Showgrounds all thetime,” he said.Thomas was a locomotivedriver for the sugar mill at the timeand when a dog called DashingLoco had its first Mackay start onenight, he had to back it.“The dog won and I bought itfor $300 that night,” he said. “DaveBrett was still in Mackay at thetime and I got him to train it forme.”Dashing Loco won a number ofgraded races for the Brett/Laugapartnership within the next year.In 1997 Thomas and Madelinemoved to Gin Gin and would stayfor about 10 years. It was here thatthe Laugas started trainingthemselves.“We bought a few dogs with mybrother-in-law Ray Smith who isstill living in Gin Gin,” saidThomas. One of the first was a MajorMadeline and Thomas Laugaenjoying a day at Rocky races.Fox-Go Indy Go dog he named Indy’sBoy a December 2000 whelp, bornjust a day before Thomas andMadeline’s wedding anniversary. The dog, named Indy’s Boy, woulddevelop into a more than handygalloper and he is still a member ofthe Lauga kennel today as one of sixretirees in an eight-dog kennel.Indy’s Boy could not handle thegrass at Bundaberg so Thomasheaded to Rockhampton with himwhere he won a number of races. “Hewas placed in 75 percent of his racesat Rockhampton,” he said.“He was something that dog,”said Thomas. “A pit bull attacked himJedi GreyhoundKennelsJust for the love of it54246417 or0414991293* Rearing from birth to whenever* Spelling, Broodbitch care* Limited Pre-training and Training* Quality meat fed* Regular flea and worm control* Regular handling and bathing* Large galloping yard* All yards have brick kennelling* 350m straight track. FIRST it was his brother, now it’s his mate… that poor John McCarthy can’t take a trick.John is the popular painter comegreyhound man who has already tastedGroup success with his star galloperDagenham but had plenty of winners alongthe way.Geoff Allen gave John the former smartrace bitch Hanson Sapphire to breed with acouple of years ago and he put her to Victorianspeedster Primo Uno.Hanson Sapphire could run like the windwinning 12 races, running second in aCapalaba Futurity and making the final of theEric Thomson at the Gold Coast. Theirmate Michael works in the scrap metalbusiness.“We got interested through GaryHolborn who was going to be a partner inthe pup,” said Dion.“But Gary pulled out as did a couple ofother mates Michael Barry and Troy Boylewho are both regretting it now.”Bundy Assassin was reared on theNorthern Rivers by Brad Northfield andthe boys promptly forgot about her.“Brad had to ring and ask if we werecoming to get her,” said Dion. “We arenovices at this game. She went up to Bevanand Elaine Williamson are educated herand she hasn’t looked back.”Serge Livotto, who trains her, believesthe finish-on lures introduction at AlbionPark has been a God-send for BundyAssassin.“It has given her a confidence she maynever have got,” he said. When she won a maiden at Albion Parkrecently, her owners were there, but not allof them.“Glyne was 100 metres from the trackand had to listen to it on the radio,” saidDion. “He missed out.”Search endedwith red facesMORNINGSIDE trainer was sohappy with his new purchase hedecided to drop in to his mate outHemmant way and show her off.As soon as he opened the back ofhis station wagon, the bitch dartedout and dashed off into a nearby, and very large paddock.Morningside trainer and hishemmant mate spent hours trying totrack her down without luck despite acouple of sightings. Our man from Morningside ranghis wife and kids and they duelyarrived to help with the search.Butafter a few more hours, andwith night starting to set in, the kidscomplaining, and everyone gettingtired of the search, all five headedback to the station wagon. There, sitting as proud as punchin the back of the wagon, was ourMorningside man's lastest pride andjoy. The search in the paddock hadgone on four hours and hours. No one bothered to take a lookback at the original source.Morningside man was red faced, and his Hemmant mate has notstopped telling the story. The (May, 2009) Journal Page 15

But it took him six monthsto get him.Falvey has known Bathurst greyhoundbreeder Peter Stanford for some time. He’sbought a few dogs from Peter in the past andwas always happy with the results. When he heard how good a pup byBombastic Shiraz-Chili Berger had broken inand was trialling, he just had to have him. There was the added bonus that the pup’sdam was a half sister to champion bitch PauaTo Burn. Falvey had to have him.“He was being set for the Dapto Maidenseries and I tried for six months to buy him,”said John. LEFT: Peter Simpson preparing tohead out on yet another delivery.ABOVE: Peter's mum Lila with oneof her many stars.AROUND the mid 1980s, Peter Simpsonreckoned he’d had enough of greyhoundracing.Peter was born into a kennel rather than ahome. His mum Lila was a famous face aroundthe industry on the Northern Rivers of NSWall her life. Her parents, too, had racedgreyhounds for decades.Lila had great success with such qualitygallopers as Dark And Gloomy, Deb’s Jeweland Fast Wendy. Dark And Gloomy won theGabba Galaxy among her 21 victories from 42starts. She was also third to Acclaim Star inthe Brisbane Cup.“I can remember driving to the Gabba eachweek with Dark And Gloomy,” said Peter. “Wewould drive down the Lions Road in a carwith no air conditioning and some days in 40degree heat. Often we wouold pull over andput Dark And Gloomy into one of the creeksto cool down.”It was Dark And Gloomy, or to be precisea litter of five Wild Port pups she produced, that swayed Peter to take a break from theindustry.“In the Wild Port litter was a dog calledJet Port who we set up for a big punt atBeenleigh,” said Peter. “We got bookie RayTimms to help us put $3300 on him. ChickaScott helped.”Jet Port won but tore a hamstring in thewin.“Mum died soon after, the litter didn’tcome up as good as we thought and I thoughtit was time to get out.”Peter and wife Helen had five acres atStratheden and as owners-builders put up theirdream home.Colleen Northfield, wife of Bill, indirectlygot the Simpsons back into greyhoundracing.“Bill and Colleen had won the Vic PetersClassic with Leon Mal at Wentworth Park in1993,” said Peter. “Colleen was driving pastBuckinghamChuckWhite and Fawn Dog, Sept 2004, 32.6kgs.Token Prince-Stargari Heiress by Just The Best48 starts, 25 wins, 11 2nds, 3 3rds, $100,000WON2007 Group 2 Gold Coast Cup2007 National Sprint Qld Final2006 National Sprint Qld Final2006 Qld Derby ConsolationSECOND2006 Group 1 National SprintTHIRD2006 Group 2 Gold Coast CupFINALIST2006 Flying Amy Puppy Classic2007 Group 1 Winter Carnival CupIpswich 30.40 (then 2ndfastest to only SurfLorian), 30.42, 30.43;Albion Park 29.96; GoldCoast 24.11, 25.68; 12wins at Albion Park;Stud Fee: $550(Stud fee does not includeprogesterone tests or vets fees)and invited us to a big family BBQ to celebratethe win.”Peter, Helen and Helen’s daughter Sharonhad such a great time, saw what an impactLeon Mal’s victory had, and decided to getback into dogs.“Sharon pestered us. She was 14 andloves greyhounds. Mangu Khan was our firstdog and he won 10 races. We had a lot of funwith him,” said Peter. But Peter had to learn to train all overagain.“I’d known Peter Giles and gave him a callto get some inside knowledge,” said Peter.“We put in a couple of competition runs andgave away walking dogs. Someweekends he will head to Marty Hallinan’s atOrange and will stay overnight around there.“A good week is transporting 20 dogs, sometimes it can be as low as two or three,”he said. The success of Renzo Park rearing andtransport has seen Peter and Helen sponsorthe highly successful Renzo Park Future StarsClassic at Lismore.“We are talking to Lismore now aboutextending the distance to 520 metres,” saidPeter. The Simpson’s success has also broughta downside.“We hadn’t been able to take a holidayfor 18 years,” said Helen. “That was untilMark and Carmel Johnston just kicked us outHelen andPeter withpups beingreared ontheirproperty.a few years ago for a weekend break.“They wouldn’t take no for an answer, came up here and looked after the place whilewe got a few days break.”That break was to Melbourne and Peterand Helen headed out to Darren McDonald’sproperty and got some helpful advice andbecame great friends with the leader oftrainers in that state. The Johnstons have planned anotherworking holiday at Renzo Park soon to givePeter and Helen another break.Renzo Park is named after Renzo Piano(City Blitz-Spitfire Bale) who Peter and Helenraced out of the Peter Giles kennel with goodsuccess in the late 1990s. IF Ledger and his littermates Langer,Gardener, Fredreico, Hay Lillian, I’m Zoeyetc knew what they had to live up to, they’dall be champions. That may not be the case but the litter isshowing more that it’s fair share of abilityfor breeder, owner and trainer Nev Cumner.Ledger recently won the Esster Cup atBundaberg and two of his littermatesLanger and Gardener were also finalists. All trace back to one of the most famousof Australian greyhounds, twice NationalSprint champion Sandi’s Me Mum, the WAlegend who is their third dam.Sandi’s Me Mum also won a Laurels atSandown. Her daughter May Be Good was afinalist behind Prince of Tigers in the 1997WA Sprint Championship. And dam Smokey Flash was the winnerof three races for Nev who bought hercheaply from bob and Lee Biddle when shewas a pup.Smokey Flash never got to show her trueworth, according to Nev.“She hurt a hock and a fibula and thendropped a back muscle,” he said.Nev bought the bitch from the Biddleswhen they were living at Churchable. Hisson Jay was great friends with their sonBen. “That was about 25 years ago and Iworked for a time with Bobby at themeatworks,” said Nev.Cumner has been dabbling ingreyhounds since Jay and Ben Biddlebecame friends. Now 55, he’s been in Bundaberg for thepast four years. The Lindale Blue-Smokey Flash litteris a repeat mating.“She had one pup to Lindale Blue at thefirst mating and Tony Apap gave us a freeservice and the litter racing now is fromthat,” said Nev.He has named all the pups aftercelebrities or friends. Easter Cup winnerLedger is named after Aussie actor HeathLedger. Langer, of course, is named afterAlfie the Australian rugby league legend.Gardener was named because he wasalways digging holes in the garden. “He gotan infection in his throat and it looked likehe would be a pet so that’s why we let himroam around the house … to dig up thegardens,” said Nev.Nev is on the move, to a 160 acre propertyat Bucca on the northern outskirts ofBundaberg. He also has a litter of Go Wild Teddy-Miss Eliminator pups he has high hopes for.Easter Cup (550m)Bundaberg1 LEDGER $3.60Nev'steamhasmuchto liveup to(Lindale Blue-Smokey Flash)Owner-trainer: Nev Cumner2 BLACK BAHAMA $1.80(Where’s Pedro-Hyleena)3 SNOWY STANLEY $8(Scottish Express-Tillack’s Pride)Others: 4 Langer $3, 5 Farleigh Diana $5, 6Gardener $3.60, 7 Koolboo King $12, 8Coleman $4.80. Since 1986 the Queen Lauryn damline has hadfour Temlee sire strains, Tangaloa, Antiquity, HailThe Champ and Bright Ebony.Token Prince gave the line a big shot ofWaverley Supreme blood over four Temlee sirestrains and nicks with Pitstock Park sons BrotherFox and Acacia Park the end result a championQueen Lauren yet another success story for theWaverley Supreme/Temlee cross.Possible future sires for Queen Lauryn?Bombastic Shiraz offers more WaverleySupreme and Temlee descendant bloodlines with aGinger double.Slater offers a different Temlee sire strainand his damline offers Irish and Americanbloodlines compatible to Australian TemleeWaverley Supreme bloodlines, plus areinforcement of Pitstock Park blood throughAcacia Park and Brother Fox.Queen Lauryn has plenty of WaverleySupreme and Temlee bloodlines therefore asuitable/compatible outcross to keep the bloodBrett Lee, Where's Pedro, Surf Lorian, PremierFantasy or Bit Chili ... best for the Queenfizzed up with vigor is vital for the longevity ofthe line.I choose Premier Fantasy to breed with QueenLauryn. Premier Fantasy offers both Irish andAmerican compatible outcross bloodlines. Hisfourth dam, Irish oaks winner Burnpark Sally, wasa granddaughter of Supreme Fun (sire of WaverleySupreme and Laurdella Fun)Burnpark Sally also has a double up SilverHope whose blood is compatible/proven withAustralian Temlee and Waverley Supremebloodlines.Produce of Premier Fantasy (bitches) will beable to go back into Temlee strain sirelines (Justthe Best, Brett Lee sons and grandsons)Premier Fantasy’s racing traits of early paceand mid-race speed will suit Queen Laurynperfectly.Graham MoscowMy number one selection as a mate for QueenLauryn would be Where’s Pedro! The first nick I have identified is theRasmussen Cross through Amerigo Man in the4th generation of both greyhounds. This cross timeand time again has proven to be a potent cross, especially for stud dogs, with stars such as PureOctane, Knocka Norris, Where’s Hoover, Eiffella,Cool Mat and Buckingham Chuck etc.Queen Lauryn’s close relation on the dam’sside Eye Muranna (Group 3 Young Stars ClassicWinner) is by Where’s Pedro’s litter brotherHallucinate; their great great great grandmother wasNovember Lilly. Queen Lauryn - November Lillyx Tangaloa; Eye Muranna - November Lilly x BillyBale*. This nick with Hallucinate, the litter brotherof Where’s Pedro, reinforces the Amerigo Mannick in the broodbitches damline.Further, sons of Malawi’s Prince (e.g. Placard,Token Prince) have a proven nick with some ofWhere’s Pedro’s best offspring including, El Galo,Tasman Queen, Top Fuel etc.The cross of Where’s Pedro and Queen Laurynwill produce three-quarter relations to stargreyhound Mogambo, now at stud. Mogambo’sdam Zarbo is by Bright Ebony, the same as QueenLauren’s mother Cheeky Sprite. This crosspotentially could create another Mogambo.Although there are other opportunities as goingto a Black Shiraz sireline, or utilising a speed linesire from the Just the Best/Credibility line, I am ofthe opinion that Where’s Pedro would be QueenLauren’s best opportunity to prove herself as abroodbitch, by throwing strength, chase, temperament and early speed into her pups.Queen Lauryn is a fabulous race bitch, withnumerous track records to her credit, but she lackedthat early speed at the Group 1 level. The crosswith Where’s Pedro will hopefully throw that earlyspeed and strength into the pups, that he hasthrown to dogs like El Galo and Mogambo.Where’s Pedro has thrown some exceptionaldogs over the past couple of years, and theRasmussen Cross through Amerigo Man, as wellas the proven nick on her dam’s side, and the crossbeing a three-quarter relation to Mogambo, tick allthe right boxes for a first sire.I would outcross Queen Lauren at some stage, but not for her first litter, and Premier Fantasywould be my top pick for an outcross.Brenton WilsonThe task of finding a suitable stud dog forQueen Lauryn is different to most sire selections. The freak factor is already there and what is neededis the match most likely to maintain QueenLauryn’s qualities in her offspring. Because thefreak factor is already there, there is no reason totake risks like breeding her to close relativesor doubling Malawi’s Prince close up. The onlything you could really want to add is greater speedfrom the boxes, since trouble at the start and thefirst bend has prevented her race record from beingeven more impressive. It makes sense to select a well proven studdog that throws the appropriate qualities in arelatively high percentage of off-spring, along withreinforcing and complementing aspects of herpedigree without breeding too close.Given that Queen Lauryn is such anoutstanding race bitch and not just another topclass daughter of Token Prince, it also makes senseto try to reinforce key elements of her pedigree inorder to try to reproduce her qualities in heroffspring.Queen Lauryn’s damsire Bright Ebony, whoheld a number of track records, is also damsire ofthe freakishly fast Mogambo which suggestselements of Bright Ebony’s pedigree should bereinforced by Queen Lauryn’s future mate (as theywere in Mogambo - a son of Where’s Pedro/grandson of Brett Lee). The most obvious factor is Bright Ebony’ssire Elle’s Commando who is also damsire ofspeedsters Whippy’s Image and Bit Chili. Theapparent source of quality here is the Osti linethrough Elle’s Commando’s sire Osti’s Idol (a litterbrother to Dollar Bird and Amazing Osti - dams ofStately Bird and Prince Of Tigers respectively,Osti’s Idol is also a full blood relation to Gun LawOsti). The (May, 2009) Journal Page 22

But Osti’s Idol is not the only representativeof this line in Queen Lauryn’s pedigree. Thegranddam of Osti Lee, Little Gorgeous, is a sisterto Classy Echo the dam of Alyssa Jane. WhereasLittle Gorgeous was mated to Benjamin John toproduce Osti Too, Classy Echo was mated toBenjamin John’s son Woolley Wilson to produceAlyssa Jane. And whereas Osti Too was mated toTemlee to produce Osti Lee, Alyssa Jane wasmated to Temlee’s son Satan’s Legend to produceAlyssa Gai - so even though the sisters LittleGorgeous and Classy Echo (Smart Conjurer-SilkyEcho) are a fair way back in the pedigree theirlines have been bred in parallel for a couple ofgenerations to produce the closely related bitchesOsti Lee and Alyssa Gai.So that similar influences from these lines aremuch closer in the pedigree and are probably a keyreason for the success of the Bright Ebony-CheekyVillain mating. Also significant in Queen Lauryn’s pedigreeis November Hussy who shares much of herpedigree with Pretty Short. Not only do they havethe same sire (Tangaloa) and damsire (UngwillaLad) but Newmore’s Secret, the granddam of PrettyShort, also shares significant elements of both sidesof her pedigree with November Hussy’s maternalgreat grandsire Dusty Rapid - specifically theimportant dams Secretly and Racing May.Significantly Dusty Rapid is also the damsireof Osti’s Idol.So not only are the two lines of SmartConjurer-Silky Echo combined in Cheeky Sprite’spedigree as explained above, but these lines havealso been combined several times in the pedigreewith the lines of Racing May (through TivoliDreamer, Newmore King and Come On Clopook)and Secretly (through Dusty Rapid and BrotherFox). While there are also a number of otherduplicated lines in Cheeky Sprite’s pedigree, the Silky Echo (Osti) and Secretly lines are adefinite theme.Queen Lauryn’s sire Token Prince brings in anelement of outcross through his double of WaverlySupreme, but his sire Malawi’s Prince traces backthrough his direct damline to Magenta, thegranddam of Secretly. Token Prince’s dam TrueTemptation brings a line of Secretly through hergrandsire Brother Fox. But the main thing in relationto Token Prince for selecting a stud dog for QueenLauryn, is that Token Prince needs to have shownhimself compatible with the stud dog who alsomust be a good match for Queen Lauryn’s damCheeky Sprite.Interestingly, despite the parallels between theorigins of Queen Lauryn’s maternal line and PrettyShort, Pretty Short doesn’t appear in her pedigree. So we are looking for a significant Pretty Shortinfluence in the stud dog to be selected for QueenLauryn. We also want to build on the Secretly andSilky Echo lines that are already strong in herpedigree. And we want a sire that has combinedwell with Token Prince.Fortunately, there is a sire that brings togetherall these desired pedigree components and is alsohighly proven and can throw the requisite boxability and early pace.Brett Lee carries the most successful line ofPretty Short through New Tears, the sire of SobbingSal. He also has three crosses of Secretly (5x5x6)and is a son of Gun Law Osti, as mentioned earliera full blood relation to Bright Ebony’s grandsireThanks TomTom Flanagan wins the 10 percent share in a pup from the first litter of QueenLauryn. Tom is Lismore based. "Tom's analyses of the Queen's pedigree and his wellthought out and researched recommendation has gone a long way to us planning amate for the Queen" ... Steve Hawkins.Osti’s Idol. Brett Lee has also produced well toMalawi’s Prince bitches (Collide, Over Flo, Arvo’sAthena) and Token Prince bitches (Give Me Five,Ready To Star, Laurie Banner). Brett Lee is myrecommendation for these reasons.Where’s Pedro comes a close second, beingboth a son of Brett Lee and because he also tendsto throw box ability and early speed. He brings intwo more lines of Secretly through Dusty Rapidand Little Blade, and another line of Osti Leethrough Osti’s Shadow. For me, the choice is still Brett Lee. While it isgood to bring these crosses together from bothsides of the pedigree, they don’t need to be doubledup over and over. The pedigree needs to becompatible, not saturated. (The Where’s Pedrocross gives more closely bred offspring than theBrett Lee cross). The hardest thing to pass up about Where’sPedro is that his dam produced such an outstandingdog as Pure Octane to Token Prince. This is whereit is important to remember that we are breedingfrom Queen Lauryn, not just another Token Princebitch.Tom FlanaganQueen Lauryn, the superstar race bitch, carriesa heavily in-bred pedigree. While at first glance itwould appear she is perfect for an outcross sire, Ido not believe that is necessary. There are three extremely good options forthe Hawkins family to breed Queen Lauryn.Obviously her time at stud will be difficult for herbecause race bitches with as much ability as shehas, always have their offspring judged on theirown ability. It is virtually impossible for Queen Lauryn toput into her offspring the ability she has. Let’sface it, there is only one track record holder atWentworth Park and Ipswich. My first suggestion for her would be a matingto Bit Chili. While I realize he is an unproven studdog, he was a quality racer as shown by his NationalSprint victory, and he also allows for a blend ofcommon ancestors within the mating. Both BitWILDChili and Queen Lauryn carry Malawi’s Princeand Elle’s Commando. In the case of Malawi’sPrince, he is through a daughter in Bit Chili and ason in Queen Lauryn. This is an excellent factor. High Earner is bredon a double-up of Malawi’s Prince. Elle’sCommando will come through two daughters in amating between Bit Chili and Queen Lauryn. Morein-breeding to Shining Chariot and Ginger will resultfrom this mating. Many of the doubled ancestorswill not have been reinforced before.Another option is Superman, the recordbreaking son of Brett Lee. While most breederswould just say “got to Brett Lee” because he’s thebest, the reality of that could be difficult. It’s longbeen known he has fertility problems and most ofhis semen is sold overseas. Superman is an excellentoption because he brings in some fine links withQueen Lauryn. Both Superman and Queen Lauryncarry the famous Osti Lee damline, and both havea cross of Malawi. This will be balanced as willChariot Supreme, a extremely good sire to doubleupon. My third option is Surf Lorian. Cheeky Sprite, dam of Queen Lauryn, already has a highlypromising litter by Surf Lorian who has doneexceptionally well with Malawi’s Prince daughters(Miss Hot Gossip). The link between West Capeand Amerigo Man in the resultant mating isexcellent and we all know just how successful thenick between Just The Best (sire of Surf Lorian)and Token prince (sire of Queen Lauryn) has been.Again Chariot Supreme is doubled in the pedigreeand many of the best progeny sired by Just TheBest carry this double-up of Chariot Supreme.Bill WarnerVOODOOFee $440(Go Wild Teddy x Voodoo Princess ex Voodoo Lady)Is there a cheaper sirethrowing city winners?Teamplaeamplay Manor971 Atkinson Dam Road, Churchable, Qld 4311SpellingSeasonal SpellingPre-TrainingWhelpingRearingTrainingContact Mick or FeePh: (07) 54246726 Mob: 0407 975990VOODOO PRINCE(Albion Park 30.28 ... winner heat Molly CampbellSilver Dollars)Pups For SaleMade To Size-Yes Mistress(Go Wild Teddy-Raven Poldar)4 Dogs, 4 Bitches, whelped 1-2-09$2000 eachAlso standingJAMAZZFee $770Park Ridge Greyhound ComplexLot 35 Smith Rd Park RidgePh 07 3200 0172 Mike 0411 326605 Rachel 0402 684786Visit our website at www.parkridgegreyhoundcomplex.comThe (May, 2009) Journal Page 23

Without knowing the fullcircumstances it is difficult to commentfurther but suffice to say it will becomeincreasingly difficult to market yourproduct when the supply base is beingeroded by loss of licensees from clubclosures. If indeed the proposal is enacted, thisclub would be looking very closely at anyredistribution of funding ensuring thecountry clubs are given a fair andreasonable representation. As the racing season progresses,Okinawa, prepared by Lakes Creektrainer Roslyn Svensen, maintains a slightadvantage over Magic Swift (Cec Ringuet)and Dimple Assassin (Wal Bennetts) in theGreyhound of the Year.Andrew Suli and Dallas Beckett arehaving a real battle for the trainer’s awardwith Wal Bennetts and Cec Ringuet righton their hammer.Albert Harker has his kennel firingand if the winning trends continue he maybe the “dark horse” to snatch the award.Albert has steadily built up his string ofgreyhounds in both numbers and qualityand is deserving of success.TOWNSVILLEWhat a difference it has made to havethe old lure and running rail replaced. With the constant breakdown of the oldlure, which had seen its day, this has been areal boost to racing in Townsville. The double bunny lure has seen thedogs pick it up quicker and being quitenoisier than the old lure it has benefitedthe outside boxes also.Only a couple of weeks left to the firstTAB meeting with everything runningsmoothly to the lead up.The meeting is a twilight. We are expecting to have a good roll upSecretary'sNotesas the word has been spread around thetown and the far north in general.Feature races on the event will be thefinal of the Young Guns over 498m and theMaiden final over 380m.The following Saturday (May 9) will seeanother meeting. Pat MarchantOwen EdmondsGBOTA NewsViews and Policy of QGBOTA.Views of the QGBOTA are that there is a need for the Board of <strong>Greyhounds</strong><strong>Queensland</strong> to explain financing of the Logan track without the closure ofAlbion Park and the takeover of their funds.Bearing in mind the project needs to be completed in the near future. The board also needs to assure the industry there will not be any ongoingcosts to manage methane gas problems and possible carbon tax.Unless the industry can be assured on these points, we prefer to see the$10 million be directed to the Gold Coast club for establishment of a greyhoundracing track. We do not support the closure of the Capalaba track at this time. The policy of the QGBOTA is for the maintenance of three tracks i.e.Brisbane, Ipswich Logan/Gold Coast.AFGBOTA CONFRENCE held in Sydney on Good Friday was attendedby Qld, NSW, WA and SA and the main topic of discussion was the use of theMicrochip in the racing greyhoundIt was a unanimous decision by all states not to have it introduced into thegreyhound industry at any time for several reasons.Change of MeetingsThe meetings of the QGBOTA will be held at Capalaba club on Sundays. The first of these meetings was to be held last month but was called offdue to the flooding of the Capalaba track. THE television was on Sky Channel athome recently and I heard a birthday callfor Doris Steinke. It made me remember some great oldtimes with Doris and her sister Betty whohave been great greyhound stalwarts formany, many years in south-east <strong>Queensland</strong>.Doris is 88, still drives her car aroundthe suburbs, heads to indoor bowls a coupleof days a week and still owns shares in afew dogs. And every now and then you can stillfind Doris at a race meeting at Ipswich.Ipswich has been a happy place for Dorisfor the past. Her sister Betty died a few years ago,but the pair have seen some great times.Between them and friends they have ownedor shared in the ownership of NewGeneration, Just Jane both winners of theIpswich Gold Cup, as well as Just A Charmwho was the National Distance championat the Gabba. Both New Generation and Just Janewere Ipswich greyhounds of the year.Doris gets fantastic support from hermany neighbours, like Don and Lyn Masseywho have been priceless for Doris.Betty and Doris were just part of theinflux and influence women had ongreyhound racing in <strong>Queensland</strong>. But backin the early 1970s women in <strong>Queensland</strong>had a bit of a start on those in NSW.No greyhound could be handled bywomen on a racetrack in NSW at that time.It was a ridiculous situation and fortunatelythe officials in that state saw the error oftheir ways.I have always believed women are amainstay in the preparation of greyhounds. They still are today.I firmly believe women handle dogsbetter on a racetrack. Look at some of themover the years, Pauline Fruend and BevBehm, Margaret Quarrell, Maureen Culey,Maree Heck, Edna Stafford.Margaret is still churning out great dogstoday. The first time I met Margaret she waswalking a black bitch called Eskdale Lassshe had brought from Victoria when shemoved up here.Margaret’s mother Kath and my mumIvy would play bingo together four times aweek … at least. I reckoned if they weregreyhounds, the pair of them would be racefit.Look at the greats Margaret has trainedover the years, Wallowa Flash, Coin SpotLass and her famous daughter Coin SpotPride. Eskdale Lass was the greatgranddam of Wallowa Flash, the dam ofCoin Spot Lass and granddam of Coin SpotPride. Then add Hatari Chief, Nobly Born,Wild Coin Lad and Wild Edition etc etc.Coin Spot Pride was a wonderful bitch.I remember her winning the BradshawCorey PearcePhotographyFor all your race photos atAlbion Park (Mon, Tues, Wedand Thursday nights)Ask us about specialised photosof your champion.0417 000130Syd NorrisMemoriesChallenge at Harold Park in 1984, a matchrace against Lease Of Life from JohnClayton’s kennel. The Challenge was a State of Origin typeaffair.<strong>Queensland</strong> had been on a winning trotin the State of Origin and the Challenge wasa real <strong>Queensland</strong> v New South Wales clash.Coin Spot Pride won easily and even thoughMargaret is a real Aussie rules fanatic, shegot right into the spirit of the rugby leaguetype challenge.Specially when Coin Spot Pride won.One of my devoted readers of this columnis Maureen Culey, she and Beryl Green, andI always give them a wink whenever I seethem.Maureen raced a bitch called StrongQueen who was a pretty good Gabbaperformer. SYDNEY and possibly Australia’slongest serving race broadcaster AdrianTillott has just celebrated 50 years behindthe microphone two weeks short of his 73rdbirthday.Adrian comes from the wounderful eraof racecallers stemming back to the 1950’sand he has worked along side some of thebest, including the great Ken Howard, IanCraig and Frank Kennedy. He has also mixed it with some of thecharacters of sport remembering the greattimes he says seem to be lost these days.”Those people are just not in the gameanymore, the colour has gone, you don’tknow anyone at the track now. There mayhave been plenty of shady characters in thesport 40 years ago but they made someinteresting studies at the time,” he said.Adrian has been a Sydney boy all hislife, schooled at Auburn Primary and thenBurwood High just 30 minutes from theCBD. Like all broadcasters Adrian wantedto be involved with radio straight out ofschool but opportunities back in thosedays were not often available.“Dad never had any interest in racing soI don’t know where the racing blood camefrom,” Adrian said.“I became a radio mechanic workingwith HMV and Illawarra Appliance Stores.”Experience came for Adrian in 1958.“I went into 2KY when I was 21 and sawmanager Bert Beaver who told me to seeRay Conroy. I did and Ray helped me startcalling the Bankstown and Liverpooltrotting gymkhanas.”A few years later radio station 2KAKatoomba presented Adrian with a goldenopportunity. He was the first caller to startoutside broadcasts with that station before2KY started their coverage.IGRCGary ClarkNew South WalesAfter Adrian left 2KA, the late FrankKennedy took over and Adrian went on totake up on-course positions atIpswich Greyhound Racing Club'Leadingthe Way'Feature Race DatesHeats Young Guns 520m 19/8/09Final Young Guns 26/8/09 ($10,000 to winner)Heats Futurity 520m 20/9/09Heats Derby 520m 2/09/09Final Futurity & Derby 9/9/09 ($5000 to winner)Memorial Trophy Best 8 630m 9/9/09 ($3000 to winner)Major Event2009 HIGHLAND SMASH REPAIRPUPPY AUCTION11th October 2009All Auction Pups Eligible for 2011 RaceSeriesContact the Club for DetailsIpswich Greyhound Racing ClubPh: 07 3202 2977 Fax: 07 3202 2510 Email:igrc@gil.com.auWoolongong and Dapto.Adrian also called up the Richmondstraight before Ian Craig took over. Tillott’slove for harness racing continued as hecalled the Crookwell and Goulburnmeetings.Adrian’s friendship with Ian Craigcontinued as he was best man at hiswedding. There is little Adrian hasn’t broadcast. He called the first 270 meetings at Nowradogs and trots and gained a break throughthen 2WL Wollongong station manager BillGibson to call through Brisbane’s 4BK inthe 1970’s.“I can remember Ray Conroy becomingsick one night at Wentworth Park. I wasthere and filled in for him. It was my firstmeeting with 2KY. I can remember callingthe first winner Johnny Cola who carriedthe number four green rug,” Adrian said.It was a case to be on track at all timesjust waiting for an opportunity to break andthe great voice of all time Ken Howard wasof great assistance to Adrian.”Ken let me call the last two races atHarold Park trots, he was a champion bloke.Trainersplease noteWhen nominating for specialevents e.g. Novice, Time Trial,Young Guns etc, and it is the onlyevent you wish your greyhound tobe considered for please ensureyou advise or state ONLY e.g.Novice Only, Time Trial only.Should you not indicate ONLY,the grading panel will thenconsider and include you in otherevents should your greyhound beeligible to compete in them. His guidance was so valuable.”Tillott has called at more than 50 tracks, including 19 greyhound tracks, and his onlyinterstate work was at the Mackay gallopsand trots when he was on holidays back in1965.”I filled in for a young and new callerthere John Howard (no relation to Ken buthe had the ideal name for a racecaller) whofell short of the mark at the time and lackedthe self confidence so I called a fewmeetings.“I loved calling at Bulli, it was myfavourite track, I can remember calling theDerby at Wentworth Park for Roman Earl’swin.”Married to Robyn for 47 years, theyhave three children and two grandchildren.“I have met some fantastic peopleincluding Peter Quirk who I think has beenthe greatest race steward. I had a lot ofrespect for South Coast trainer NevilleBallinger.“Zoom Top would be the most versatilegreyhound I’ve seen, Black Top the bestsprinter, and the fastest breaker was clearlyBiscuit Moldoon.”After half a century in a racing industryyou get to know a lot of people on bothsides of the ledger.Adrian has some great stories to tellincluding one night when in the last racethere were four runners, the short-pricedfavourite Welcome Shade was in box onebut it turned in the boxes. The crowd wentoff and some even suggested the trainerheld the dog in the boxes. He remembers police arriving at thetrack to catch pickpockets that were out inforce,”Wayne Robertson from the force wason-course to keep a close eye on thepickpockets who had been in operation.Wayne had a punt that night, backed awinner but when he went to collect foundhe had been ‘picked’ himself.“They could even outsmart the bestback in those days,” Adrian said.It is an appropriate time for Adrian to becelebrating 50 years of racecalling at Easterbecause he was the voice of the SydneyRoyal Easter Show for 37 years callingharness events before the show moved toits current site at Homebush and harnessracing ceased in 2001.Harness racing was part of the day andnight entertainment in the main arena forfour decades.Adrian has had a long and successfulcareer as a racecaller. Many may not recognize him like KenHoward, Ian Craig or Bill Collins but he hasbeen there in the shadows, callingeverywhere, setting the pace, makinghistory. His famous greyhound words will beheard for a while longer yet … “the power ison and the bunny is on its way, there aboutto go”.The (May, 2009) Journal Page 28

EVERGREEN Portarlington trainerGraeme Bate will target the Brisbane wintercarnival with his kennel stars after winningthe Bendigo Cup with Taipan Bale.Bate said he expected up to half-a-dozenof his best greyhounds to make the trek northin winter, including Australian Cup winnerVelocette. The wily mentor will also try up-andcomingchaser Hastings Bale over 700metres and the Warrnambool carnival inearly May before turning his attention toAlbion Park.Bate said Taipan Bale had been unluckynot to take out a string of cups with the$26,000-to-win Bendigo Cup coming after asuccess in the Healesville Cup up the straight.Taipan Bale ran a sizzling time of23.73sec when defeating the Peter GilestrainedOur Wilbur by three lengths, withWayne Vassallo’s Parracryl third.Taipan Bale is a February 2006 whelpedson of Solve The Puzzle-Arivada Bale andhas had 67 starts for 32 wins and 22 placings. He has best winning times of 27.13 atHorsham, 23.66 at Warragul, 25.37 atGeelong, 29.85 at Sandown, 18.21 atHealesville, broke 24 at Bendigo five timeswith a best of 23.73 and went under 25.10 atBallarat three times with a best of 25.02.“He’s basically been looked after all hislife and is relatively injury free,” Bate said.“He should have won another two or threebig ones. He just went down to Birthday Boyin the Geelong Cup after having no luckyand was desperately unlucky in the Hobart1000.“He’s turned in a couple of disappointingruns in group finals but in the Bendigo Cuphe was always there and he was always goingto be in the finish.”After beginning well from box two, TaipanBale stalked early leader Pure Love and theAndrew Thomson$2.50 favourite hit the front rounding thehome turn.“We’ll now go to the Warrnambool Cup.There’s a bit of a lull in 520 metre racinguntil the Brisbane carnival and we’ll head upVictoriathere in June,’’ Bate said.Velocette has already run 29.67 aroundAlbion Park so you would expect him to becompetitive in anything he races in,’’ he said.Other feature race winners at theBendigo carnival included Mepunga Diva inthe Made To Size bitches final, short pricedfavourite Gardam Prince took out the AllenTaylor Memorial in a flying 23.73, theMerryfields Kennels stayers cup went toAtlantic Prince, Tunza Pace dominated thesuper GOBIS final and boom sprinter Ned’sPedro saluted in the $10,000-to-win maidenfinal. The Darren McDonald-trained Ned’sPedro, the greyhound recently auctioned toraise money for the Kinglake Football andNetball Clubs, dominated the maiden serieswinning his heat, semi-final and the final insub 24 second timesA half share in the two-year-oldgreyhound was donated for auction to theKinglake Football and Netball Clubs beforethe series and fetched $14,500 for thebushfire affected sporting teams.Ned’s Pedro clocked 23.78 in the maidenheats, which was just three lengths shy ofSlater’s track record. The half share was purchased by anothergreyhound trainer, Tina Womann of Lara andher partner Dennis Trewin.THERE are increasing numbers of peoplewho have heard about greyhound as pets andare looking to adopt one for their family. Our greyhounds are special dogs givento us by people committed to ensuring thedogs they have raised, trained and loved geta long and enjoyable retirement. The first priority of the program is to makesure all our dogs are rehomed to familiescapable of providing this, as well as plenty oflove and care.Unfortunately, there are many people notcapable of giving appropriate care to agreyhound, so it is important GAP screensthose wanting to adopt.GAP concentrates its promotional effortson educating the public about the greyhoundand the wonderful attributes that set it apartfrom other breeds. We do not want people to adopt agreyhound because it is an inexpensive dogto buy or because they feel sorry for it. Insteadwe concentrate on people who areenthusiastic and interested in learning aboutgreyhounds and how to responsibly care forone. We ensure our displays are as attractiveand professional looking as possible, to showoff the breed to its best advantage. We alsogive our volunteers plenty of training so theyknow how to promote our dogs.A lot can be ascertained over the phonewhen someone applies to adopt a greyhound. We need to be sure a person wants a dog forthe right reasons. Our dogs are adopted out only as pets, and we do not supply them for any otherreason. If somebody wants a greyhound as acompanion, they will need to explain to ushow they came to the decision. Our dogs are all desexed. There is noexception. Desexing increases a dog’sFoodsupplied toGAP dogsby Big DogPet Foodssuitability as a family pet. It makes it lesssuitable for any type of sport, and unsuitablefor breeding. If a person wants a dog that isnot desexed, it raises questions as to whythey want a greyhound.Rather than speculate, I explain why wedesex our dogs, and unless they are in fullsupport of our policy, we are unable toproceed with the application. The initial phone interview is importantfor getting basic information about the waythe dog will be accommodated. It allows us toscreen people we believe cannot provide asuitable home for a greyhound and maybesuggest alternatives.GAP has trained a small group ofvolunteers to conduct home visits.Potential adopters in remote areas or inother states or countries are asked to sendphotos of all areas the dog will be living in,and any other pets they will be with. We verifywith a third party the photos are authentic. We need to be able to see that the family’spets are well cared for, and there is nothingthat would be dangerous for the greyhoundin the house or yard.We need to see fences and gates and knowwhat surrounds the area the dog will be livingin. There needs to be adequate shelter, andproof the home can meet or exceed the dog’srequirements for companionship. The home visit (or phone interview forKirsty O'BrienGAP Newsremote adopters) aims to educate peopleabout their responsibilities as a greyhoundowner, and ensure these are understood andwill be taken on happily.Depending on the persons’ priorexperience with dogs or greyhounds, theinformation session could take up to twohours. People need to know how to properlycare for the dog. We need to be sure they arecapable of providing financially for the dogand their home environment is stable. If the interview is progressing well andthe potential adopter is keen to provideeverything a pet greyhound could possiblyneed, then we ask more questions to reallyunderstand the adopter’s expectations. We aim to match the greyhounds withexactly the right homes.Different dogs suit different lifestyles, andeveryone is happy when we place the rightdog in the right home.<strong>Greyhounds</strong> can behave a littleunpredictably at times, so it is our job toensure the greyhound has been trained andknows how to behave well in a domesticsituation or out in the community. It is also our job to assess the temperamentof each dog, so we can predict to large extenthow a dog is likely to behave in a particularhome. This means a small number ofgreyhounds will be assessed as unsuitablefor the program, but on the whole if agreyhound has minor problems while in ourcare, we will work with the dog to help it learnhow to behave properly.Because of the effort we make to screenout unsuitable adopters, prepare the dogs foradoption and educate our adopters, we havea fantastic success rate of dogs stayingpermanently in their new homes.Very few are returned. Those that arereturned are mostly due to familycircumstances changing. This contrasts witha return rate of 20% within 24 hours forBrisbane’s larger shelters. We provide lifetime support for the dogswe have adopted out and will assist theadopters with their greyhound as much aswe can.We welcome people who place their dogsin the program to call us if they are wonderingabout the progress of their dog or who it hasbeen placed with. The majority of adopters are keen to speakto the people who once owned their dog, findout about their past life, and tell you all aboutthe great new life their dog is having. The (May, 2009) Journal Page 29

Ben loves nothingbetter than a night on the puntwith his mates at Albion Park.Ben’s punting group isstarting to rival the “Table ofKnowledge” for intensity ofconviction when it comes toselections in any of the fourstates racing every Thursdaynight.Ben is also a greyhoundowner with a burning ambitionto own a great galloper.A few years ago, Ben andsome partners thought theyhad just the dog they werelooking for. They’d parted withplenty to buy a Brett Lee-Fairy Wings dog and all his early reports said he was somethingspecial. The sire is a legend, the dam a high class staying bitch in Victoria. They named him, rather appropriately, Brett’s Rival. From the moment Brett’s Rival hit the racetracks the buzz was about that he was indeedsomething special. He made his debut at Albion Park, coming off a super trial, with a 29.88 win. It was the samenight Black Enforcer led throughout to win in 30.05. Few dogs get anywhere near the 30-second barrier at Albion Park let alone crash through it at their first start on the track.Just two races later, Brett’s Rival was sidelined for a year with an injury that was oftenthought would finish him. In the meantime, he’d won a heat of the Group 2 Qld Derby as ababy, and then came from last to finish fourth to Black Enforcer in the final … when never outof trouble.A year is a long time in greyhound racing particularly when a dog like Brett’s Rival couldhave spent the best time of his life earning a reputation that would make him a stud dog.Brett’s Rival did just that … but Ben and his partners will always ask themselves just whatmight have been if their dog had not been laid low for so long.He came back to prove himself a genuine Group dog, an honest and hard chasing galloper. His litter proved themselves just as much winning more than 100 races between them withsmart performers such as Speed Swinger, Hostile Missile, Hyde Park, Brett To Wing andOutswinger.Hyde Park is already the dam of Tunza Pace (by Whisky Assassin) a placegetter in theBallarat Cup and winner of 14 races.Dave Irwin put the polish on Brett’s Rival for much of his later career and always marvelledat the dog’s tenacity and his ability to have come back from injury to be a Group performer. He was a big fan. Ben and his partners put Brett’s Rival to stud. His first crop of youngstersare now at the breakers, and the rumblings about their ability are positive. He throws his ownlaid back, relaxed temperament into his pups, pups that are all business once they head to thetrack.Brett’s Rival’s pedigree is saturated and heavily congested. He carries a double-up of NewTears 3x4 through daughter strains, and another of New Tears’ own sire Pretty Short, throughPretty Fearless. The position of New Tears in Brett’s Rival’s pedigree is very powerful andlends itself for even more of his blood to return to him among the broodbitches he serves. But Brett’s Rival also is line bred in the immediate tail female line to the sisters Wee Sal (2nddam of Brett Lee) and Lorrathor (third dam of Fairy Wings). Both are by Chariot Supreme-I’mBlessed and thus sisters to Hall of Fame bitch Highly Blessed. There are few better damlines in the country, if not the world. Brett’s Rival carries BrotherFox 3x5 on the immediate sireline on both sides of his pedigree. Just The Best does the sameand he was able to pick up more of this line in producing his best son, record-breaking SurfLorian. While an immediate glance at Brett’s Rival’s pedigree might cause one to think he could befar too heavily in-bred for broodbitch options to utilise his fabulous pedigree, this is far fromthe case. There are a myriad of opportunities among broodbitches in this country to use him.Just look at the bloodlines that Brett’s Rival does NOT carry:* Malawi’s Prince, his son Token Prince and his sons Black Enforcer and Pure Octane* Head Honcho, or the famous lines of his sire Walkabout Sid and his brothers West Cape,Bogenfel, Carnival Boy and the most influential of them all Amerigo Man* Big Ginger Boy and his litter brother Black Shiraz and his famous sons Bombastic Shiraz,Stately Bird, Cyrus The Virus etc* Awesome Assassin and his great sons Whisky Assassin, Modern Assassin, Collision,Most Awesome etcSo just what line of broodbitches would suit Brett’s Rival best. The fact he carries a double of New Tears, through two daughters, makes him ideal to bringAUSTRALIAN WINNING LINESVolume 15 - 2007 $55 (inc postage & handling)Containing all the usual features of the greyhound year: City Winners; Sires, Dams& Maternal Grandsires of City Winners; Western Australia; Australian Feature RaceWinners; Sires, Dams, Maternal Grandsires and Pedigrees of Feature Race Winners;Australian Track Records and Overseas Feature Winners.Cheques/Money Orders payable to:Peter Rose, PO Box 330, Jimboomba, Qld, 4280.Ph (07) 5548 6687The (May, 2009) Journal Page 32

Token Prince (3x3to Waverly Supreme) and Worth Doing (3x3 to Temlee) are also bred on such a cross.Ben Day and his partners would be well advised to attract even a lesser race quality littersister to Mid City Mandy to Brett’s Rival to do this mating.Because Brett’s Rival carries a double to the sisters Wee Sal and Lorrathor (by ChariotSupreme-I’m Blessed), breeders who have bitches with male strains of Chariot Supreme intheir pedigree would be well advised to look at him.Chariot Supreme can be found through sons Shining Chariot (and his son Golden Currency),Benjason, Franklin Deano, Wild Pirate, Black Pirate in many bitches throughout the country. All will help to sex balance Brett’s Rival pups. One of the most exciting young sires in the land today is Pure Octane (Token Prince-Elusive Rebel). He is proving his worth as a sire of strength. Daughters of Pure Octane couldbe ideal to put to Brett’s Rival. Here is an example:Gun Law Osti (dam a daughter of Osti Lee)Brett LeeSobbing SalBrett’s RivalZealous GuyFairy WingsEbony Park LassTEST MATINGToken PrincePure OctaneElusive Rebel (by Bobniak a great grandson of Osti Lee)Primrose PathRoyal PilgrimAl FrescoPrize DancerEvery time a daughter of Pure Octane is mated to Brett’s Rival it will bring in a double-upof that famous broodbitch Osti Lee. The Brett Lee/Bobniak nick is based on this in-breedingand has been hugely successful boasting Where’s Pedro, Hallucinate, Meticulous, Prang andcloser to home the brilliant Albion Park performer Elma Fud.Even from early observations, it appears doubling and even tripling the Osti damline is anextremely powerful tool available to greyhound breeders. For those interested … Osti Leeruns along the alternate sex path on both sides of her pedigree to the genetic brother andsister Pendle Havoc and Gorgeous Babe. Here are their pedigrees:TrionChief HavocThelma’s MatePendle HavocRoccabrightVal BrightVal Phar (daughter of Weedy Valley)TrionChief HavocThelma’s MateGorgeous BabeRoccabrightDaisy RockDaisy Valley (daughter of Weedy Valley)Which brings us back to Brett’s Rival. Any bitch that carries Bobniak in her pedigree willsuit Brett’s Rival. While on the subject of sons of Token Prince, Black Enforcer daughters too would do wellto go to Brett’s Rival. Black Enforcer has Light Of Fire in his damline and as we said he is ableto pick up on the daughter strains of New Tears in the pedigree of Brett’s Rival. Black Enforceralso has Head Honcho as his damsire. Head Honcho always has an affinity with New Tears(Carlisle Jack etc) and his daughters have done well with Brett Lee (Superman and BentleyJane).Carlisle Jack bitches are an extremely interesting option for mating with Brett’s Rival. The position of New Tears as damsire of Carlisle Jack is an extremely powerful one whenmatings to Brett’s Rival are done. Brett’s Rival has New Tears on his alternate sex path as doesCarlisle Jack.Greyhound DataGreyhound breeders should be aware of the value of the fantastic website produced byGunnar von Boehn in Stuttgart, Germany. The site can be accessed viawww.greyhound-data.comIt's well worth a look for the information available. The best of its kind.by David BraschDoubling New Tears this way could produce some extremely interesting offspring. Here is one example:Gun Law OstiBrett LeeSobbing SalBrett’s RivalZealous Guy (out of a daughter of New Tears)Fairy WingsEbony Park LassTEST MATINGHead HonchoCarlisle JackOur Girl Olivia (by New Tears)Petite MamzelleStar TitleHolly’s DebHollywood DebAnd now for the trump card ... or cards. One is No Intent, the son of Head Honcho-Hot Show Deb (New Tears-Wee Sal).Putting bitches by No Intent to Brett’s Rival will result in the litter sisters Sobbing Sal andHot Show Deb (3x3) both coming through sons. This is how it will look.Gun Law OstiBrett LeeSobbing Sal (New Tears-Wee Sal)Brett’s RivalZealous GuyFairy WingsEbony Park LassTEST MATINGHead HonchoNo IntentHotShow Deb (New Tears-Wee Sal)Jaylo BlushToken PrinceToken FeverBay WaveFirstly, you will remember Brett’s Rival also carries a sister to Wee Sal in Lorrathor in hisimmediate tail female line. Brett’s Rival’s grandsire Gun Law Osti is in-bred to the half sistersBonnie Secret and Academy Lass (both daughters of famed broodbitch Secretly) in this exactsame pattern.I do not believe Big Daddy Cool bitches will suit Brett’s Rival. The half brothers Brett Leeand Big Daddy Cool will produce progeny far too in-bred. But bitches that carry Big DaddyCool as their damsire will be a much better option. And for the second trump card … it is Cry Havoc the son of Head Honcho-Wee Sal whohas been quite prolific in pedigrees. Remember Brett’s Rival also carries Cry Havoc’s halfsister Sobbing Sal in his sireline, but also has a sister to Wee Sal in Lorrathor in his immediatefemale line.Broodbitches that carry Cry Havoc anywhere in their pedigree will suit Brett’s Rival. Theyshould be a huge priority for Ben Day and the syndicate that owns Brett’s Rival. This is howa mating would appear:Gun Law OstiBrett LeeSobbing Sal (New Tears-Wee Sal)Brett’s RivalZealous GuyFairy WingsEbony Park LassTEST MATINGHead HonchoCry HavocWee SalHypo HavocMalawiGracie’s ImageGracie MorrisSo, as you see, Bret’s Rival while having what appears a heavily congested pedigree of hisown, still has any number of breeding options available for broodbitch owners. And that is without even looking to bitches that carry imports like Larkhill Jo and SpiralNikita who mix extremely well with Brett Lee.So You Want to be aGreyhoundTrainer$22(incls GST)plus $5 Postage& HandlingContact: GRA of Qldon (07) 32627800or PO Box 250 Albion, Q, 4010The (May, 2009) Journal Page 33
