qualified professionals such as content<br />
experts and individuals with expertise in<br />
exam development who are known as psychometricians.<br />
CSCS: CSCS certified individuals have a<br />
diverse academic and professional background,<br />
including strength coaches, athletic<br />
trainers, physical therapists, personal trainers,<br />
physicians, chiropractors, researchers<br />
and educators. To earn the CSCS credential,<br />
candidates must pass an exam comprised<br />
of two <strong>section</strong>s, one of which is one<br />
and a half hours in length and another that<br />
is two and a half hours in length. The<br />
Scientific Foundations <strong>section</strong> consists of<br />
80 multiple-choice questions and is<br />
designed to assess a candidate’s knowledge<br />
in the areas of exercise sciences and<br />
nutrition. The Practical/Applied <strong>section</strong> consists<br />
of 110 multiple-choice questions. Forty<br />
of these are in conjunction with a video,<br />
which assesses competencies in exercise<br />
techniques, functional anatomy and testing<br />
procedures. The remaining 70 questions pertain<br />
to program design, organization/administration<br />
and testing/evaluation.<br />
To be eligible to sit for the CSCS examination,<br />
the candidate must hold bachelor’s<br />
degree from an accredited institution, be a<br />
currently-enrolled college senior or hold a<br />
degree in chiropractic medicine. The candidate<br />
must provide documentation of at least<br />
a BA/BS degree defined by the United<br />
States educational system. In addition, the<br />
individual must be currently certified in at<br />
least adult CPR.<br />
The CSCS examination fee is $250 US for<br />
early registration for NSCA members and<br />
$355 US for early registration for non-members.<br />
Late registration is $285 and $390.<br />
NSCA-CPT: To obtain the NSCA-CPT credential,<br />
candidates are required to pass an<br />
examination that focuses on client consultation/assessment,<br />
program planning,<br />
exercise techniques, safety/emergency<br />
procedures and legal issues. The threehour<br />
exam consists of 140 multiple-choice<br />
questions, 35 of which correspond with<br />
video segments assessing knowledge primarily<br />
in the areas of exercise technique<br />
and client assessment areas. The remaining<br />
questions pertain to the exercise sciences,<br />
client assessment, program planning and<br />
safety-emergency issues.<br />
To be eligible to sit for the NSCA-CPT<br />
examination, the candidate must be currently<br />
certified in CPR. Although no formal<br />
post-secondary course work is required,<br />
candidates are expected to have a good<br />
knowledge of biomechanical concepts,<br />
training adaptations, anatomy, exercise<br />
physiology, program design guidelines and<br />
the content of current position papers pertaining<br />
to special populations.<br />
The examination fee is $225 US for early<br />
NSCA registrants and $330 US for early nonmember<br />
registrants. Late registration fees are<br />
$260 and $365.<br />
Both the CSCS and NSCA-CPT exams will<br />
be held in <strong>Canada</strong> on the following dates:<br />
June 4 and October 1, 2005, Vancouver, B.C.,<br />
August 6 and December 3, 2005, Toronto, ON.<br />

Mission Statement<br />
he New Brunswick Council for <strong><strong>Fit</strong>ness</strong> and<br />
TActive Living (NBCFAL) is a non-profit association<br />
that develops, supports and promotes<br />
training, certification and leadership in fitness<br />
for New Brunswickers. The NBCFAL is an advocate<br />
for active living in the province.<br />
Our organization was incorporated in 1988 beginning<br />
with an aerobics certification. We now offer the<br />
following programs: Group <strong><strong>Fit</strong>ness</strong> Leadership,<br />
Resistance Training Leadership, Aquafitness<br />
Leadership, Older Adult <strong><strong>Fit</strong>ness</strong> Leadership,<br />
Personal <strong><strong>Fit</strong>ness</strong> <strong>Trainer</strong>, CSEP-Certified <strong><strong>Fit</strong>ness</strong><br />
Consultant and CSEP-Professional <strong><strong>Fit</strong>ness</strong> and<br />
Lifestyle Consultant.<br />
Our organization offers programs in both<br />
French and English throughout New Brunswick.<br />
We also host the largest fitness conference in<br />
the Maritimes each year in November.<br />
Our programs are transferable across <strong>Canada</strong><br />
to any other National <strong><strong>Fit</strong>ness</strong> Leadership<br />
Alliance (NFLA) partner. The NFLA partners<br />
include all other provincial/territorial fitness certification<br />
agency.<br />

SFA is involved in the business of certifica-<br />
Ntion to provide standards, guidelines and<br />
training; to ensure safe and effective<br />
fitness classes, and for on-going professional<br />
development.<br />
The association was formed in 1989 to provide<br />
standardized fitness leadership training in<br />
the Province of Nova Scotia. The mission of<br />
NSFA is to represent <strong><strong>Fit</strong>ness</strong> and Lifestyle<br />
Practitioners in Nova Scotia and its objectives<br />
of providing advocacy, membership, education<br />
and training. The Association is a member of<br />
national fitness alliances working together to<br />
provide transferability of certification from<br />
province to province. Although the certification<br />
is conducted in the province of Nova<br />
Scotia, it is transferable across <strong>Canada</strong>.<br />
NSFA currently offers certification courses<br />
for group fitness, resistance training,<br />
older adult, aqua, and train for trainer courses<br />
for each. They are also piloting a youth<br />
fitness course and hope to offer it very soon.<br />
The prerequisites to participate in their certification<br />
program are as follows:<br />
1) be 18 years of age or older<br />
2) in good health with an adequate level of fit<br />
ness to participate in the program (one year in<br />
fitness and/or recreation)<br />
3) grade 12 education<br />
4) completion of 30-40 hour course<br />
5) receive 80% on written NFLAC exam and<br />
pass practical exam<br />
6) completion of Task Sheet/ Case Study<br />
7) current CPR./First Aid<br />
Membership and certification courses vary<br />
between $275. and $300. Re-certification and<br />
membership renewal is every two years. The<br />
member must have ten professional credits to<br />
re-certify and a current CPR.<br />
