The range of interventions is illustratedby reference to a number of projectsundertaken.● FAO in collaboration with the relevantline ministries, provincial and localauthorities and partner I/NGOssupported over 16,500 households in2007, providing vegetable seed kits andbackyard poultry assistance. A further10,000 returnee families were assistedin 2008.● UNDP has engaged in socioeconomicrecovery, mine action,disaster management, environmentalmanagement, as well as access to justiceand support to local governance. Througha combination of these interventions,approximately 46,500 individuals inTrincomalee and 66,200 individuals inBatticaloa were assisted between 2007and 2008.● UNDP’s Second Phase Equal Access toJustice (A2J) Project was initiated in March2009 in partnership with the Ministryof Constitutional Affairs and NationalIntegration. The project has helpedorganize 11 mobile documentationclinics held in as many divisions inTrincomalee district, and issued over10,000 essential legal documents todisplaced populations including ID cards,birth/death and marriage certificates,while also offering free legal aid servicesalongside the clinics.● UNDP’s Local Governance Umbrellaproject (LoGoPro), will also be active inthe Eastern Province from June 2009.Implemented by both the Ministryof Local Governance and ProvincialCouncils and the Ministry of PublicAdministration and Home Affairs,the project includes interventionsthat target the de-concentrated andcommunity structures at the local level,and strengthening the capacities of thenewly elected authorities.● UN-Habitat’s starter house interventionbenefited ninety (90) families with a newhouse and assisted 10 families to repaira damaged house. In the first phase ahouses at Vivekananthapuram cost onthe average US$1,200 and in the secondphase the next 45 houses were built ata cost of US$1,325 with some additionalfinishes. Provision of toilets has helpedto improve the hygiene condition of thefamily.● The UNDP Mine Action Projectsupported the Government Agents inthe East to identify areas contaminatedby mines or unexploded ordnance,prioritize mine clearance tasks, performquality assurance and task completioncertification to facilitate the hand-overof cleared areas. From January 2007 toDecember 2008, project staff supportedminefield clearance of 1,008,180 m2 andBattle Area Clearance of 316,252,421 m2within the Batticaloa and Trincomaleedistricts. Project staff conducted a totalof 310 quality assurance visits duringthis period to ensure that the mine/UXO clearance operations of the eightdemining organizations met Sri Lanka’sNational Mine Action Standards.● UNICEF provided safe water supply,adequate sanitation facilities andpromoted hygiene behaviour benefitingover 12,000 IDPs and returnees as wellas 10,000 school children through theprovision of toilets, water tanks, handpumpedwells, water bowsering, andimproved coordination through leadingthe WASH cluster.● UNICEF, in cooperation with partners,completed 15 health centres, four17
