The range of <strong>in</strong>terventions is illustratedby reference to a number of projectsundertaken.● FAO <strong>in</strong> collaboration with the relevantl<strong>in</strong>e m<strong>in</strong>istries, prov<strong>in</strong>cial and localauthorities and partner I/NGOssupported over 16,500 households <strong>in</strong>2007, provid<strong>in</strong>g vegetable seed kits andbackyard poultry assistance. A further10,000 returnee families were assisted<strong>in</strong> 2008.● UNDP has engaged <strong>in</strong> socioeconomicrecovery, m<strong>in</strong>e action,disaster management, environmentalmanagement, as well as access to justiceand support to local governance. Througha comb<strong>in</strong>ation of these <strong>in</strong>terventions,approximately 46,500 <strong>in</strong>dividuals <strong>in</strong>Tr<strong>in</strong>comalee and 66,200 <strong>in</strong>dividuals <strong>in</strong>Batticaloa were assisted between 2007and 2008.● UNDP’s Second Phase Equal Access toJustice (A2J) Project was <strong>in</strong>itiated <strong>in</strong> March2009 <strong>in</strong> partnership with the M<strong>in</strong>istryof Constitutional Affairs and NationalIntegration. The project has helpedorganize 11 mobile documentationcl<strong>in</strong>ics held <strong>in</strong> as many divisions <strong>in</strong>Tr<strong>in</strong>comalee district, and issued over10,000 essential legal documents todisplaced populations <strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g ID cards,birth/death and marriage certificates,while also offer<strong>in</strong>g free legal aid servicesalongside the cl<strong>in</strong>ics.● UNDP’s Local Governance Umbrellaproject (LoGoPro), will also be active <strong>in</strong>the Eastern Prov<strong>in</strong>ce from June 2009.Implemented by both the M<strong>in</strong>istryof Local Governance and Prov<strong>in</strong>cialCouncils and the M<strong>in</strong>istry of PublicAdm<strong>in</strong>istration and Home Affairs,the project <strong>in</strong>cludes <strong>in</strong>terventionsthat target the de-concentrated andcommunity structures at the local level,and strengthen<strong>in</strong>g the capacities of thenewly elected authorities.● UN-Habitat’s starter house <strong>in</strong>terventionbenefited n<strong>in</strong>ety (90) families with a newhouse and assisted 10 families to repaira damaged house. In the first phase ahouses at Vivekananthapuram cost onthe average US$1,200 and <strong>in</strong> the secondphase the next 45 houses were built ata cost of US$1,325 with some additionalf<strong>in</strong>ishes. Provision of toilets has helpedto improve the hygiene condition of thefamily.● The UNDP M<strong>in</strong>e Action Projectsupported the Government Agents <strong>in</strong>the East to identify areas contam<strong>in</strong>atedby m<strong>in</strong>es or unexploded ordnance,prioritize m<strong>in</strong>e clearance tasks, performquality assurance and task completioncertification to facilitate the hand-overof cleared areas. From January 2007 toDecember 2008, project staff supportedm<strong>in</strong>efield clearance of 1,008,180 m2 andBattle Area Clearance of 316,252,421 m2with<strong>in</strong> the Batticaloa and Tr<strong>in</strong>comaleedistricts. Project staff conducted a totalof 310 quality assurance visits dur<strong>in</strong>gthis period to ensure that the m<strong>in</strong>e/UXO clearance operations of the eightdem<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g organizations met <strong>Sri</strong> <strong>Lanka</strong>’sNational M<strong>in</strong>e Action Standards.● UNICEF provided safe water supply,adequate sanitation facilities andpromoted hygiene behaviour benefit<strong>in</strong>gover 12,000 IDPs and returnees as wellas 10,000 school children through theprovision of toilets, water tanks, handpumpedwells, water bowser<strong>in</strong>g, andimproved coord<strong>in</strong>ation through lead<strong>in</strong>gthe WASH cluster.● UNICEF, <strong>in</strong> cooperation with partners,completed 15 health centres, four17
