maternity wards and two paediatricwards in Batticaloa, in addition toconstructing water and sanitationfacilities at three health centres in fourreturnee villages. UNICEF conductedtrainings on health education, prepregnancyinterventions, nutrition,essential newborn care and neonatalresuscitation, established communitybased mothers groups and providedhealth care centres and public healthmidwives with equipment and suppliesto enhance their services to the conflictaffected population.● UNICEF supported the District ChildProtection Unit with training andequipment and supported the SocialServices Ministry in establishing sixsocial care centres. With the support ofUNICEF and partners, the Departmentof Probation reunified an estimated 50children with their families. UNICEFalso supported awareness raisingprogrammes on child protection,reaching 5,000 people. In addition,UNICEF supported recreationalactivities in 30 resettlement villagesfor an estimated 3,000 children, andfunded partners in providing counselingactivities for 600 IDP children. UNICEFpartners conducted Mine Risk Educationactivities in 30 resettlement villages,gathered information on six grave childrights violations in Batticaloa district andcontinued advocacy with armed forcesand groups against child recruitment.● Three tsunami affected schools werereconstructed, while damaged andvulnerable schools were repairedand refurnished to allow the childrenadequate learning space to continuetheir academic activities. UNICEF alsofurnished child friendly schools andprovided them with library book tosupport children in furthering theirreading abilities. In total, over 6,000children benefited from UNICEF-fundededucational supplies. UNICEF alsoconducted training for teachers andprincipals on child friendly schools,child centred methodologies and how toconduct catch up education for childrenwho have missed out on education due tothe conflict and ensuing displacements. Inaddition, UNICEF provided the BatticaloaCentral Education Zone with equipment.18
