enviro updateTop UK pump makerjoins with Aussie poolindustry innovatorStuart Turner Ltd has signed an exclusive agreement with Australianinnovator NFT.Leading British pump manufacturer,Stuart Turner Ltd, has signed an exclusiveagreement with Australian innovatorNew Fluid Technology (NFT) to developand market their pump impeller technology.Following an extensive review of theperformance characteristics of the Supa-Stelth pump, originally designed for pooland spa applications, Stuart Turner agreedto develop a range of multi-stage pumpsincorporating the patented NFT design. The new pumps will be intended for bothdomestic and commercial water pressureboosting applications with flow rates up to160 litres per minute at pressures between150kPA and 600kPA.The design provides substantial increasesin centrifugal pump efficiency and significantreductions in noise as a result of itsunique “solid body rotation of fluids” designwhich effectively eliminates turbulencewithin the pump.Mark Williams, Managing Director ofStuart Turner says the NFT design was asignificant departure from traditional centrifugalpump design with the potential toachieve world leading performance.“We are looking forward to a really excitingoutcome from our trans-global venturewith NFT and hope that it heralds a widercollaboration in the future.”Brian Bambach, Director of NFT, says theagreement with Stuart Turner was the seconddevelopment venture to be signed by the companyand that further deals were in the offing.“It is a particular pleasure, as a newcomerto the field, to work with one of the world’slongest-established and best known manufacturersof water pumps,” he says.Stuart Turner has long history in hydraulics. The company has been in the pumpbusiness since 1906 and in centrifugalpumps since the 1930s.Co-chairman of Stuart Turner, WilliamBarnard, says that over that time they’verelied on innovation to keep the company atthe forefront of the pump business.“We have a fair degree of inventivenessfrom our own people but we keep our eyesopen for good ideas from others as well,”he says. Most of the pumps Stuart Turner makesare for bathrooms, to boost the water flowor to help fill the header tanks which arepopular in Britain. In the past couple ofyears they’ve expanded into other domesticapplications including spa pumps.“We’re really looking at applying the NFTtechnology to domestic water supply. As youknow, efficiency is becoming increasinglyimportant. Australia is at the forefront ofregulations do with pool and spa pump efficiency, but it’s having a big impact in othermarkets as well,” he says.“The other thing we like about the tech-H. William Barnard, Stuart Turner Chairman, Mark Williams, Managing Director,Paul Manning Technical Director and Terry Day Technical Director New FluidTechnology at the NFT’s Gold Coast laboratorynology is that it’s quiet. That’s important forthe domestic market in what we’re doing, going into houses and terrace houses andapartment blocks.”Barnard says that Stuart Turner is ina number of countries around the world, including the Middle East, and they planto take the technology into these internationalmarkets.“We’ve signed an agreement – a kind ofjoint venture to develop a pump for the applicationswe’re interested in – and usingthat design concept on a wider basis. Thatdevelopment period will take some time, andat the end of that we’ll work out what formthe agreement will take but it is somethingbroadly along the joint venture lines,” he says.“We’re excited about the technology andwe see substantial opportunities up the roadif it can live up to its promise. This representsan extension from NFT’s initial focusin the pool and spa industry, and underlinesthe potential of the technology.“It is definitely a vote of confidence.”splashmagazine.com.au SPLASH! | 25
