“Turkey needs more investment inyacht, cruiser, golf, sports, thermal health, congress and especially culturetourism,” said Murat Dedeman, presidentof Turkey ‘s Tourism InvestorsAssociation (TYD).The new presidentof TYD reported that investments aremostly concentrated in southern regionsof Turkey, especially in cities of Antalyaand Mugla. “This have a negative effecton shifting focus to different tourismsectors, other than coastal tourism”, headded. Dedeman stated that Turkey needsinvestment in various sectors suchas yacht, congress and culture tourism.“With these investments Turkey wouldattract educated and high-income tourists”,he continued. “Mass tourism, stuck in sea-sand-sun triangle, wouldnot increase Turkey ‘s earnings fromtourism”, added Dedeman. He also notedthat investments in tourism industryare mostly made in accommodationfield, however this blocks solution ofstructural problems of the sector. Presidentof TYD said Turkish tourism sectorgrew 50 percent in 2004 and 2005,and this is a very high rate, comparedto 3-5 percent annual growth in Europeancountries. “Although high growthrates attract foreign investment, the foreigncapital in tourism sector is not atthe desired level”, said Dedeman.Dubai Holding property unit Sama Dubaimade a winning bid of $705 millionin a tender for land in Istanbul’s thrivingbusiness district where they plan to builda major business and leisure complex. The winning bid gave a fresh boost toTurkey’s real estate market, which hasbeen booming on the back of strongeconomic growth and foreign interest.Sama Dubai bought the land fromthe Istanbul municipality, whichpreviously used it as a bus station, and will now turn it into the “ DubaiTowers” complex. The real estatecovers 46,241 square metres.Wednesday’s deal was the secondmajor real estate tender in Istanbul thismonth. Two weeks ago Turkish conglomerateZorlu made the highest bid of$800 million for 96,500 square metresof land in a nearby district of the city.“We will now focus on our Dubai Towersproject, the first step in our plannedreal estate projects amounting to atotal $5 billion,” Sama Dubai ChairmanFarhan Faraidooni said in a statement.Sama Dubai had announced in October2005 it would invest in thisreal estate in partnership with theIstanbul municipality, but later decidedto enter the tender on its own.It said the choice of Turkey for one ofits largest international projects wasa reflection of its confidence in thegrowth potential of the Turkish economyand its strategic position as a globalbusiness, trade and tourism centre. The company also has projects in Qatar,Casablanca, Dubai, Bahrain and Oman .Based on a subsequent calculation bythe tender commission the local currencyprice of the land was 980 million Turkishlira plus 176.4 million lira in VAT.The city’s mayor, Kadir Topbas, saidthe price would be paid in cash.SamaDubai had also made the highest bidof 840 million lira ($602 million) in thefirst written round of the tender, whichwas shown live on Turkish television. The Turkish Tourism Investors Association(TYD) has elected Murat Dedeman asits chairman after the two-term chairmanOktay Varlier had to step down accordingto the statute of the association.Dedeman said they wanted to increasethe number of members. Top priority forthe sector was lobbying for a cut in the18 percent VAT rate, Dedeman added.Members: Ali Sabanci, Cefi Kamhi, CemilUgurlu, Erol Aksoy, Fettah Tamince,Ismail Isik, Ismet Güral, Melih Halefoglu,Mithat Yenigün, Murat Ersoy, MustafaBasar, Mustafa Göçen, Oya Temelli,Recai Çakir, Sani Sener, Sahin Zabci,Temel Kotil, Mustafa Nazik. As European market shrinks, hotel investorstend towards Turkey and they speededup their researches to purchase, manage or build hotels, especially inIstanbul. Allthe commemorative services are opento the public. With symbolic links tothe dawn landing at Gallipoli, a dawnstand-to or dawn ceremony became acommon form of Anzac Day remembrance. The Battle of Gallipoli, also calledas the Dardanelles Campaign inthe United Kingdom, which is knownas Çanakkale Savaslari in Turkey, wasa joint British and French operation mountedin an effort to eventually capturethe Ottoman capital of Istanbul thatlasted from April 1915 to December1915 during the First World War. Theattempt failed, with heavy casualtieson both sides. The Battle of Gallipolihas great significance for both Turkeyand Australia and New Zealand . InTurkey, the battle is seen as one of thefinest and bravest moments in the historyof the Turkish people – as MehmetAkif Ersoy, the poet of Turkey’s nationalanthem, wrote in the Saga of Dardanelles,a final surge in the defenseof the motherland as the centuries-oldOttoman Empire was crumbling; thatlaid the grounds for the Turkish Warof Independence and the foundationof the new Turkish Republic eight yearslater, led by Atatürk, a commanderin Gallipoli himself. On the other side, the Battle of Gallipoli left huge marks inthe psyches of both Australia and NewZealand . Anzac Day is considered asthe battle that marked the birth of thecollective national identities of boththose nations, replacing that of the collectiveidentity of the British Empire. In1916, the first anniversary of the landingwas observed in Australia, NewZealand and England and by troops inEgypt . That year, 25 April was officiallynamed ‘Anzac Day’ by the ActingPrime Minister, George Pearce. By the1920s, Anzac Day ceremonies wereheld throughout Australia . All Stateshad designated Anzac Day as a publicholiday. Commemoration of AnzacDay continued throughout the 1930sand 1940s with World War II veteransjoining parades around the country.During the 1960s and 1970s the numberof people attending Anzac Daymarches fell as Australians questionedthe relevance of Anzac Day. However,in the 1990s there was a resurgence ofinterest in Anzac Day, with attendances, particularly by young people, increasingacross Australia and with manymaking the pilgrimage to the GallipoliPeninsula to attend the Dawn Service. Some 10,000 Australians and NewsZealanders came to the shores of Gallipoli(Canakkale) to commemorate theirancestors, who lost their lives duringthe The Battle of Gallipoli, also calledas the Dardanelles Campaign in theUnited Kingdom.
