You can also findinformation about sometouristical places located inCesme peninsula.Izmir<strong>and</strong>Çeşme<strong>Peninsula</strong>İzmir, historically Smyrna, is thethird most populous city of Turkey<strong>and</strong> the country’s largest port afterİstanbul. It is located in the Gulf ofİzmir, by the Aegean Sea. It is the capitalof İzmir Province. The city of İzmir iscomposed of 9 metropolitan districts. These are Balçova, Bornova, Buca,Çiğli, Gaziemir, Güzelbahçe, Karşıyaka,Konak, <strong>and</strong> Narlıdere. Each district,<strong>and</strong> generally the neighborhoods withinit, possesses distinct features <strong>and</strong> aparticular temperament. The populationof this urban zone is around 3,5 million.İzmir is the inheritor of almost 3,500years of urban past, <strong>and</strong> possibly up tothat much more in terms of advancedhuman settlement patterns. It is Turkey’sfirst port for exports <strong>and</strong> its free zone, aTurkish - U.S. joint-venture establishedin 1990, is the leader among the twentythat Turkey counts. Its workforce, <strong>and</strong>particularly its rising class of youngprofessionals, concentrated either inthe city or in its immediate vicinity (suchas in Manisa), <strong>and</strong> under either largercompanies or SME’s, affirm their namein an increasingly wider global scale<strong>and</strong> intensity. İzmir is widely regardedas one of the most liberal Turkish citiesin terms of values, ideology, lifestyle, dynamism <strong>and</strong> gender roles. The cityhosts an international arts festival duringJune <strong>and</strong> July, <strong>and</strong> the İzmir InternationalFair, one among the city’s many fair <strong>and</strong>exhibition events, is held in the beginningof September every year. It is served bynational <strong>and</strong> international flights throughAdnan Menderes Airport <strong>and</strong> thereis a modern rapid transit line runningSouthwest to Northeast. It currently has a runningbid submitted to the BIE to host theUniversal Expo 2015, which will bevoted on in 2008. Modern İzmir alsoincorporates the nearby ancient citiesof Ephesus, Pergamon, Sardis <strong>and</strong>Klazomenai, <strong>and</strong> centers of internationaltourism such as Kuşadası, Çeşme<strong>and</strong> Foça. Despite its advantageouslocation <strong>and</strong> its heritage, until recentlyİzmir has suffered, as one author putsit, from a “sketchy underst<strong>and</strong>ing”in the eyes of outsiders. When theOttomans took over İzmir in the 15thcentury they did not inherit compellinghistorical memories, unlike the twoother keys of the trade network, namely İstanbul <strong>and</strong> Aleppo. Despitethe Turkish preponderance in İzmir’spopulation, its emergence as a majorinternational port as of the 17th centurywas largely a result of the attractionit exercised over foreigners, who intheir turn drew in others. Very differentpeople found İzmir attractive over theages <strong>and</strong> the city has always beengoverned by fresh inspirations, includingfor the very location of its center, <strong>and</strong> isquick to adopt novelties <strong>and</strong> projects.St<strong>and</strong>ing on Mount Yamanlar (Dağı),the tomb of Tantalus is an example ofthe tholos type monumental tombs. Thegrave room of Tantalus’ tumulus was inthe plan of the fountain, displaying a stylecalled isopata, meaning the constructionhas a rectangle plan, covered by vaultsmade with a corbel technique. Thismonumental work is thought to be thetomb of the Basileus or Tyrant who ruledancient Smyrna in 580-520 BC.One ofthe more pronounced elements of Izmirharbor is the Clock Tower, a beautifulmarble tower that rests in the middle ofthe Konak district, st<strong>and</strong>ing 25 meters inheight. It was designed by the LevantineFrench architect Raymond CharlesPère in 1901 for the commemoration ofthe 25th anniversary of the ascensionof Abdülhamid II. The clock workingsthemselves were given as a gift to thethen Ottoman Empire by Kaiser WilhelmII. The tower features four fountains whichare placed around the base in a circularpattern, <strong>and</strong> the columns are inspiredby North African themes. The Agora ofSmyrna is well preserved, <strong>and</strong> is arrangedinto the Agora Open Air Museum of İzmir, although important parts buried undermodern buildings, waiting to be broughtto daylight. Serious consideration is alsobeing given to uncovering the ancienttheatre of Smyrna where St. Polycarpwas martyred, buried under an urbanzone on the slopes of Kadifekale. It wasdistinguishable until the 19th century,as evident by the sketchings done atthe time. On top of the same hill soarsan ancient castle which is one of thel<strong>and</strong>marks of İzmir. The Kemeraltı bazaarzone set up by the Ottomans, combinedMay / June ’0913

ocus on DESTINATION<strong>and</strong> İkiçeşmelik), to the seashore alongthe Konak Square. It remains one of theliveliest parts of İzmir. The first step thatpaved the way for the emergence ofthe present-day Kemeraltı area was thebuilding in 1592 of Hisar Mosque. It isthe oldest <strong>and</strong> one of the most significantOttoman l<strong>and</strong>marks in İzmir, although builtby Aydınoğlu Yakup Bey, a descendant ofthe dynasty that had founded the Beylikof the same name (Aydınoğlu) whichhad controlled İzmir prior to the Ottomanconquest. The name of the mosque, whichmeans “fortress”, makes reference to theGenoese castle of “San Pietro”, previouslycalled Neon Kastron in Byzantine times, part of which used to st<strong>and</strong> on the samelocation <strong>and</strong> which gradually disappearedin whole with the construction of newbuildings on its spot. The final remainsof the castle were cleared up during theconstruction of new port installationsbetween 1867-1876. The court of the1744-built Kızlarağası Han (caravanserai),with 1592-built Hisar Mosque in thebackground, in Kemeraltı, Konak, İzmir. The caravanserai is a cultural center <strong>and</strong>a touristic attraction today. The marketitself came into existence with the fillingbetween 1650-1670 of the shallowestparts of the inner bay. The processof gaining ground from the bay waspursued in 1744 with the constructionof Kızlarağası Han, a still-st<strong>and</strong>ingimpressive caravanserai that emergedas the nucleus of the market, togetherwith two older “hans”, the term implying acaravanserai with more markedly urbancharacteristics, that could not reach ourday. These were the “Great Vezir Han”constructed by the 17th century gr<strong>and</strong>vizier Köprülü Fazıl Ahmed Pasha, <strong>and</strong> theneighboring “Little Vezir Han” constructedby his successor Merzifonlu Kara MustafaPasha. Another historically important <strong>and</strong>no longer existing one was “Cezayir Han”(literally “Han of Algiers”), from wherewestern Anatolia’s excess labor force hadbeen annually dispatched to the Ottomanprotectorate of Algiers for centuries. Infact, among the hundred odd “hans”Kemeraltı counted until the beginning ofthe 20th century, clearly visible on a 1905map drawn by French cartographerson behalf of international insurancecompanies, only a dozen remains, infull or in part, while most was destroyedduring the 1922 Great Fire of Smyrna orafterwards. The remaining part of the innerbay being allowed to silt up progressivelythroughout the 18th century, the shorelinefacing Kemeraltı took its present straightform in the beginning of the 19th, althoughsome of the l<strong>and</strong> along the berth remainedunused until the end of that century. In1829, Sarı Kışla, the Yellow Casern, the principal Ottoman casern of the city, gigantic for its time, was built at immediatesea-side, <strong>and</strong> a private residence (konak)situated slightly diagonally behind thecasern was extended <strong>and</strong> converted intothe governor’s mansion, demarcatingKonak Square that holds its name fromthe mansion, <strong>and</strong> which in its turn gavethe name to the central metropolit<strong>and</strong>istrict of İzmir (Konak) <strong>and</strong> at the level ofwhich Kemeraltı is considered to start. Thegovernor’s mansion still st<strong>and</strong>s, althoughthe Yellow Casern was demolished in1955 under express instructions from thethen Prime Minister Adnan Menderes, whowanted to see Konak Square re-shaped,to the ongoing regret of many Smyrniotswho had come to adopt the oversizebuilding as one of the main l<strong>and</strong>marks oftheir city. What to Eatİzmir’s cuisine has largely been affected by its multiculturalhistory, hence the large variety of food originating from theAegean, Mediterranean <strong>and</strong> Anatolian regions. Another factoris the large area of l<strong>and</strong> surrounding the region which growsa rich selection of vegetables. Some of the common dishesfound here are tarhana soup (made from dried yoghurt <strong>and</strong>tomatoes), İzmir köfte, keşkek (boiled wheat with meat), zerde(sweetened rice with saffron) <strong>and</strong> mücver (made from zucchini<strong>and</strong> eggs).Historically, as a result of the influx of Greekrefugees from İzmir (as well as from other parts of Asia Minor<strong>and</strong> Istanbul) to mainl<strong>and</strong> Greece after 1922, the cuisine ofİzmir has had an enormous impact on Greek cuisine, exportingmany sophisticated spices <strong>and</strong> foods. Four percent fewer passengers traveled on U.S.airlines in July while the average price to fly one mile fell 18 percent, a modest improvement over the 21 percent year-over-yearyield decline observed in June. Revenue declines extended beyond the mainl<strong>and</strong> United States to the trans-Atlantic, trans-Pacific<strong>and</strong> Latin markets. “While the modest improvement in dem<strong>and</strong> from June to July would normally be cause for cautious optimism, the fact is that the number of air travelers continues to fall despite double-digit declines in fares. Clearly, with the difficult economicenvironment, dem<strong>and</strong> for air travel remains weak,” said ATA President <strong>and</strong> CEO James C. May. Also reflecting a weak globaleconomy is the continued decline in cargo traffic. U.S. airlines saw cargo revenue ton miles – as measured in revenue ton miles– decline 15 percent year over year (11 percent domestically <strong>and</strong> 18 percent internationally) in June 2009, the 11th consecutivemonth of declining volumes. July 2009 cargo data is not yet available. Annually, commercial aviation helps drive $1.1 trillion inU.S. economic activity <strong>and</strong> more than 10 million U.S. jobs. On a daily basis, U.S. airlines operate nearly 28,000 flights in 80countries, using more than 6,000 aircraft to carry an average of two million passengers <strong>and</strong> 50,000 tons of cargo.
