Turkey to Host Winter Universiade 2011
The International University Sports Foundation
(FISU) decided to hold the "Winter Universiade
2011" games in Turkey. Competing with the
Slovenian city of Maribor in the bidding process,
eastern city of Erzurum was entitled to host the
World University Winter Games in 2011. FISU's decision was announced by
the foundation's chairman George Killian in the Italian province of Turin .
The Turkish delegation in Turin, attended by Turkish State Minister and
Deputy Premier Mehmet Ali Sahin, appreciated FISU's decision to select
Erzurum as the host city for the games. After a harsh competition with the
Slovenian city of Maribor in the bidding process, Sahin stated that they were
successful because they were better prepared this time, compared to the
city's previous candidacy in 2005. Sahin said the FISU members were
impressed by their presentation, in which they even established a live
broadcast from Palandoken district of Erzurum in order to show the snowfall
to the viewers. "We are very happy because of such decision. The real
work starts now. We will fulfill our responsibilities as the state, government,
governorship and municipality from now on. We will organize the
World University Winter Games in the most successful way," Sahin
stressed. Sahin added that the total cost of World University Winter Games
is expected to be 123 million USD. "I believe the games will contribute to
social and economic life in the neighbourhood. There will be investments.
We, as the state, government, local governments and businessmen will
come together and share these expenses. I believe Erzurum will be one of
the most popular tourism centers in the world. I can say that we undertook
an organization that will also affect the neighbouring cities," Sahin commented.
On the other hand, "Summer Universiade 2011" will be hosted by
China, FISU stated.
Akdamar Church Monumental Museum Inaugurated in Van
Akdamar Church monumental museum that
is restored by Turkish Culture & Tourism
Ministry was inaugurated with a ceremony in
the eastern city of Van, on Thursday, March
29. Turkish Culture & Tourism Minister Atilla
Koc, Armenian Deputy Minister of Culture
Gagik Gyurjan, Mufti of Van province Osman
Artan and the Patriarch of Turkish
Armenians Mesrob II, were among the state
officials and foreign guests who participated
the inauguration ceremony. Director General
of Cultural Properties and Museums Orhan
Duzgun informed the participants about the
restoration works carried out in the 10th century Armenian church - now a
monumental museum. Mesrob II who delivered a speech at the opening
ceremony, said the church building is a very powerful symbol of a culture
that has contributed the Anatolian history for 3 thousand years. Mesrob II
stated that this event is considered to be a very positive development in
Turkish - Armenian relations. In his speech, Mesrob II suggested holding
annual religious ceremonies in Akdamar, in order to create a dialogue
environment between two societies. Turkish minister Atilla Koc opened and
toured the museum. Koc answered questions regarding Mesrob II's offer
about holding religious ceremonies in the Akdamar Church Monumental
Museum saying he would communicate the patriarch's offer to related parties.
He added that his mission, as the Culture & Tourism Minister, is to
restore and prepare such constructs and continued "it is the Ministry of
Interior Affairs who will make such a decision." On the other hand
Armenian deputy minister Gyurjan said the restoration works are very well
done. He noted that it would be better for the tourism if the border gates
between two countries were open. The 10th century Armenian Church is
located on the small island of Akdamar 3 kilometers off coast in Lake Van.
Built during the years 915-921 and commissioned by King Gagik I of
Vaspurakan Kingdom, the construct has an interior measuring 14.80m by
11.5m and the dome reaching 20.40m above ground. The building underwent
a restoration by the Turkish Government between May 2005 and
October 2006. The restoration works costed 2.6 million YTL.
restored. In Trabzon, the Sumela Monastery will also continue being
restored. With controversy arising from time to time about the state of
Turkey 's museums, the ministry has also announced the allocation of an
additional YTL 3.2 million for security systems as well as for the purchase
of essential computer equipment.
Turkey's Promotion Film on CNN and BBC
Turkey's new promotion film has started to
be broadcast on world-wide known TV
channels CNN International and BBC
World. "We will focus on the utilization of
international media, as well as Turkey's
promotion in international organizations
this year," officials of the Turkish Ministry
of Culture and Tourism noted. In this
framework, the promotion film started to
be broadcast on BBC World from the
beginning of January. The channel will show both the 60-second and 30second
versions of the film for 504 times throughout 12 weeks. On the other
hand, the film will start to be shown on CNN International's broadcasts in
Europe, Africa and Middle East this month. CNN Domestic, a TV channel
Love of Continents in Istanbul
Turkish Ministry of Culture & Tourism will promote Istanbul as the "Love of
Continents", said ministry executives. A romantic film will be shot with the
contributions of the ministry to promote Istanbul, and be shown in the
countries where Turkey runs a promotion campaign including Britain and
the United States. In the film, two lovers will pass through historical and
cultural heritage of Turkey and meet on the Istanbul Strait (Bosphorus).
According to the executives, meeting of two lovers on the Bosphorus Bridge
represents the conjugation of East and West. The executives underlined
importance of meeting of the lovers over the hands of a bishop and the
whirling dervishes, and noted that this emphasizes the tolerance and motto
of Mevlana. Meanwhile, a royal boat from the Ottoman era, ancient city of
Ephesus, remains on Nemrut Mountain, Trojan horse, Hittite Sun, a clergyman
from the Byzantine era and a janissary are some of the historical heritage
Turkey in Bid to Become World's Thermal Tourism Spot
Turkey is set to become a thermal
tourism destination as a
result of a thermal tourism master
plan by Culture and Tourism
Ministry. The project aims to
highlight Turkey as a major
health and thermal destination
of world by 2023. Senol Aydemir
of the ministry said a thermal
tourism master plan was prepared
as part of “Turkey Tourism
Strategy 2023.” “The ancient
regions of Troy, Phrygia and
Aphrodisias are among the regions planned to be thermal destinations.
Regional tourism potential will be strengthened and developed in these
spots,” he said, adding, “In these regions, alternative tourism facilities
including thermal institutions in particular, golf, nature sports and water
sports, will be developed.” “The aged population in Europe, our target market,
has increased. If we attract this population to Turkey, thermal tourism
in Turkey can span over 12 months. Thermal tourism provides constant
employment and there is also a high demand for it internal tourism as
well,” he noted.
Thermal tourism regions:
Overall 25 tourism destinations in four regions were identified as thermal
and culture tourism development destinations as part of the master plan
according to which Southern Aegean thermal tourism region include Aydin,
Denizli, Izmir and Manisa; Southern Marmara thermal tourism region covers
Balikesir, Çanakkale and Yalova; Phrygia thermal tourism region
Ayfonkarahisar, Ankara, Eskisehir, Kütahya and Usak; and the Central
Anatolia thermal tourism region Aksaray, Kirsehir, Nevsehir, Nigde and
Yozgat. These provinces were identified due to the fact that they aren't only
promising spots in terms of their thermal sources but also for their cultural
and natural assets as an easily accessible centers. The master plan has
two legs and at first works will be carried out to determine the geothermal
features and tourism resources of the thermal centers as well as develop
their tourism potential and technical infrastructure. The ancient and
underground cities as well as historical and natural treasures nearby will
also be utilized for tourism. Some alternative 14-day tour programs have
been prepared for tourists who come to these tourism centers in order to
enable them to spend their free time in the best way. Second step will be
for reconstruction development plans and details of investments.
Short, medium and long term plans:
The master plan anticipates Turkey to be a major health and thermal
tourism destination in the world by 2023. The ministry has short, medium
and long term plans in this sense and a 50,000 bed capacity is planned to
serve between 2007-2012 in short term while 100,000 bed capacity between
2012-2017 in medium term and 500,000 between 2017-2023 in long run. A
thermal tourism council consisting of universities, nongovernmental
organizations as well as institutions operating in the field of thermal
tourism will also be established in implementation of master plan.
Thermal-oriented fairs and workshops are scheduled in Europe, Middle
East, Black Sea and Scandinavia . Turkey ranks seventh in world and first
in Europe in terms of geothermal potential. Stretching over an important
geothermal zone, Turkey is home to more than 1,500 geothermal
resources with chemically rich thermal waters. Many spas have been built
in Anatolia since the ancient ages with the discovery of healing qualities of
natural thermal waters. The historical and cultural assets used to exist
nearby these thermal sources, which thus highlights Turkey as an important
spot for health tourism as well as culture and sea-sand-sun tourism.
The need for thermal treatment increases for Europe, Turkey 's target
market in thermal tourism, due to the aged population of Europe . There is
an intensive demand for thermal treatment especially from Northern
Europe and Scandinavian countries where rheumatism-related disorders
are common due to the climate conditions.

New direction in Tourism?
The Turkish Tourism Ministry is taking a major step towards professionalising
tourism investment, marketing and promotion. Last weekend,
Antalya Valili¤i summoned 500 Turkish tourism professionals to a
conference at the Cornelia Hotel in Belek, where several working
groups tackled the key bottlenecks to the upgrading of tourism. Louis
de Cabrini of the World Tourism Organisation outlined the accelerating
expansion of tourism - more and more tourists are spending more and
more money. But then he added the sting in the tail - 'all the future of
tourism is uncertain'. In view of climate change, 'expansion can not
continue indefinitely' and finished with a plea for more sustainable and
accountable tourism. Ignoring his words, local representatives of the
hoteliers took to the floor, begging for a pre-election bribe - a reduction
in VAT in their sector, a concession on social security payments for
the employees they keep on through the winter, release of Forestry
land, more money for promotion. No recognition of long-term pressures,
and definitely no plans. Vural Oger, now a member of the
European parliament, having cheapened Turkish tourism, now tried to
regionalise it. Quoting the example of Palma, Majorca, he pointed out
how the city had been transformed, and was being marketed as a stylish
destination. Senol Aydemir of the Tourism Ministry Investment Unit
presented the first part of a master tourism plan taking us as far as
2013. It included nine cultural districts based on past civilisations -
Hittite, Troy, etc, 17 tourism cities, 30 golf courses, four districts designated
for eco-tourism, and three districts for year-round tourism. All
these districts and regions were to be linked by 'corridors' with exotic
but meaningless names - the silk route corridor, the olive corridor.
Evidently no-one in the ministry has heard of the European concept of
Cultural Routes. Sustainable tourism, the protection of the natural
environment or even the supply of water for all the golf courses was
not considered. The principle of diverting tourism revenues into the
hands of local providers was not mentioned. Later conversation
revealed the plan as being a re-hash of a two-year-old document,
which even the Ministry considers out of date. Turkey is the 9th biggest
earner from tourism in the world - and we have no better plan than
that? A year ago the Minister, Atilla Koç, speaking in Antalya, promised
us a new plan within a year - it's now clear he meant the start of work
on a new plan within a year. The Prime Minister took the floor.
Speaking fluently without notes, he made clear his disapproval of highrise
development, and approval of traditional rural architecture. He
commented on coastal pollution, saying that, as seen from a helicopter,
coastal water was coloured like a rainbow with discharged wastes.
He pointed out the function of tourism in exposing cultures to each
other, as an essential step to world peace. He listed this government's
cultural accomplishments, which have contributed towards a diversification
of tourism - the restoration of many monuments, Mevlana year,
a national library, international inter-schools competitions, and the
major IMF conference in Istanbul. Exhorting the audience to work consistently
harder, he made no promise on VAT or other concessions.
And finally a warning, that tourism should be subject to the same legal
processes as the rest of the country, and that shoddy building and environmental
damage are not acceptable. An Israeli colleague murmured
his admiration, whispering 'I couldn't imagine an Israeli Prime Minister
being able to talk on tourism like that.' After lunch, the conference
split into working groups on promotion, investment, internal tourism
and education. The one on promotion was vociferous enough, with
pleas for Turkey to be marketed on one hand, as a strong brand image
(like Macdonald's) and on the other hand, with more focus on specific
target groups. Dr Ali Alp kept tight control, pointing out that brand
marketing was not appropriate as Turkey's brand came out looking just
like Spain or Greece. The final briefing called for a commission, funded
by a levy on the sector, which would promote Turkey as a sustain-
able product using best technology. I wasn't able to attend the meetings
of the other two groups - the investment meeting was raucous and
quarrelsome, and the conclusions, while making the usual nods to
sustainability, took little heed of the World Tourism Organisation warning.
They also made a plea for tax concessions and subsidies for development.
And the internal tourism made pleas for improved transport, help with
Turkey's First Sea-View Golf Course to Open in September
LykiaLinksGolf, which is designed
by the world famous architect
Perry O. Dye for the Lykia Group in
Antalya and is Turkey's first golf
course with a sea view, will be
opened in September. The group,
which invested 60 million euros in
the golf course and LykiaWorld
Antalya Hotel that is still under
construction, will open the hotel in
June. The Lykia Group held a press conference, attended by the world
famous architect Perry Dye, to introduce LykiaLinksGolf. Dye, who noted
that he was a third-generation member of a family that designed nearly 300
golf courses around the world, said, “LykiaLinksGolf is a very important
investment for Turkey because there is no such facility in the
Mediterranean. I expect that this golf course will be one of the best 100 golf
courses in the world. I accepted Lykia Group's proposal without any hesitation
because the project made me excited. Believe me that even my
father did not design such a golf course .” He said the golf course would be
opened in September, adding that they expected that 3,000-5,000 games
would be played during the 2007 season. Lykia Group Executive Board
Chairman Burhan Silahtaroglu said, “We, as a group, have initiated many
things. We brought a hot air balloon to Cappadocia and caused paragliding
to spread in Fethiye. Now we plan to establish a big library. That's why we
ask our customers to leave their books. We already have 1,500 books but
our Turkish customers have so far left only four books.” Silahtaroglu said
there would be sections for everyone's pleasure in LykiaWorld Antalya
Hotel, adding, “In line with the hotel's architectural structure, our guests
will be able to spend their night in one of five or six places. It will be hard
for people even to see each other in the 1,200-person capacity hotel.” He
said the group's turnover was 24 million euros in 2006, and that with the
new facilities, the group's bed capacity would reach 4,100. He said they
would employ 800 more people with those investments.
Bursa Bird Paradise on Sale
The owner of the "bird paradise" in north-western city of Bursa's
Karacabey town has put the paradise on sale. The "bird paradise" has
more than 1,000 birds from 50 different species. Owner Mustafa Bilgic said
that he dedicated his life to the birds, trees and plants in the paradise for
the past 35 years. "In 1972, I arrived at Uluabat Lake near Karacabey and
noticed that the people living there were not much concerned about the
environment and its protection. Having seen the damage caused by the residents
at the Uluabat Lake, I decided to establish a 'bird paradise'," said
Bilgic. Bilgic underlined that "after purchasing a land near the Uluabat
Lake, I decided to create a 'bird paradise'. I have sacrificed a lot to preserve
the paradise. I received bad treatment from some people...my trees were
cut and I got beaten at times." "My wife and I expected to receive support
by the government and people living in the region. But no one noticed or
paid attention to what we established. We welcomed many people, including
Polish, Dutch and French visitors at the paradise. Having not received
any support from the government, I decided to sell the paradise," stressed
Bilgic. Bilgic has not announced the price he wants for his "bird paradise"
yet.
Belek to Offer More Golf Pleasure for Tourists
APRIL’07
The Mediterranean
coastal town of Belek is
not only a popular and
enchanting holiday
resort but also an ideal
place for year round golf
tourism. Six new hotels
and four golf clubs are
planned for the area at
the end of the year.
Belek Tourism Investors Union (BETUYAP) Director General Sami Türker
Orçun said no more land was available in Belek to be utilized for tourism
purposes and the areas in which new holiday accommodations and golf
clubs are to be constructed were allocated a few years ago. He said six new
hotels would be built, adding, “There are currently six golf clubs in Belek
and four more golf clubs will be opened this year. Belek will thus be converted
into a tourism resort with hotels along the seaside and surrounded
by golf clubs with green fields behind the hotels.” Emphasizing the fact that
these kinds of new investments had a positive contribution on employment,
Orçun said the projected establishments would also increase the number
of tourists coming to the district. He said promotion was essential and as
the union they participated in important international fairs and planned a
series of workshops in Germany and Russia. Meanwhile, while the occupancy
rate in 21 hotels, which were open in January, became 46.3 percent,
some hotels even increased their occupancy rate to 93 percent. Belek
attracted 830,494 visitors in 2006 including 603,089 foreign and 227,405
domestic tourists, luring most visitors from Russia with 208, 930 followed
by Germany with 180,047. While June, July and August were the favorite
months for Russian tourists; German tourists came to the area mostly in
April, May and October. Overall 35 hotels with a total 34,700-bed capacity
are currently operating in Belek and this number will increase with the
opening of six new hotels, which will have a total bed capacity of 7,200.
Golf in Belek:
With the opening of four golf clubs, there will be 10 golf clubs in Belek by
the end of the year. Tourists played golf nearly 1.4 million times between
1995-2006, while last year around 55,000 tourists played 220,123 times.
March, April and November were the most popular months for golf
tourism. A true paradise for tourists on the shore of the Mediterranean in
the midst of pine forests, Belek is one of the most prominent and popular
centers of Turkey's tourism industry and is as such home to around 35
four-star or five-star hotels as well as many other accommodation, services
and entertainment facilities. Belek is a developing golf center in Turkey.
In planning the golf courses, architects took into account the preferences
and expectations of European golfers. In Belek, the perfectly landscaped
golf courses present a wonderful panorama while providing golfers with
excellent competition.
There are daily, even hourly tours from all resorts and holiday villages near
the golf courses and bookings are available via these tours and clubs. The
golf courses and temperate climate enable individuals and groups to play
throughout the year. Records show over 300 days of sunshine annually for
the region. The Kursunlu Waterfall is a place worth visiting in Belek. The
hidden cave at the back of the waterfall is a popular place for visiting. Near
Belek there is the Hellenistic city of Perge and the great amphitheater of
Aspendos that can still hold over 15,000 spectators. Belek is also a bird
paradise and there are over 100 species of bird living there.
German Die Welt Praises Night Life in Istanbul
The German newspaper Die Welt published an article on Istanbul March 10
and praised its night life. Aside from historical and touristic attractions,
Istanbul is an important city that provides exciting night life, said Die Welt.
"Istanbul is a city often visited for its palaces, mosques and museums.
However, it is a city that could be labelled as a city of parties, concerts and
fashion." Meanwhile, Turkish tourism authorities in Berlin kicked off a publicity
campaign whereby public buses in Berlin and in some other German
Dubai to Invest $5 Billion in Istanbul
Dubai Holding property
unit Sama Dubai made
a winning bid of $705
million in a tender for
land in Istanbul's thriving
business district
where they plan to
build a major business
and leisure complex.
The winning bid gave a
fresh boost to Turkey's
real estate market,
which has been booming
on the back of strong economic growth and foreign interest. Sama
Dubai bought the land from the Istanbul municipality, which previously
used it as a bus station, and will now turn it into the " Dubai Towers"
complex. The real estate covers 46,241 square metres. Wednesday's deal
was the second major real estate tender in Istanbul this month. Two
weeks ago Turkish conglomerate Zorlu made the highest bid of $800 million
for 96,500 square metres of land in a nearby district of the city. "We
will now focus on our Dubai Towers project, the first step in our planned
real estate projects amounting to a total $5 billion," Sama Dubai
Chairman Farhan Faraidooni said in a statement.
Sama Dubai had announced in October 2005 it would invest in this real
estate in partnership with the Istanbul municipality, but later decided to
enter the tender on its own. It said the choice of Turkey for one of its
largest international projects was a reflection of its confidence in the
growth potential of the Turkish economy and its strategic position as a
global business, trade and tourism centre.
The company also has projects in Qatar, Casablanca, Dubai, Bahrain and
Oman. Based on a subsequent calculation by the tender commission the
local currency price of the land was 980 million Turkish lira plus 176.4
million lira in VAT. The city's mayor, Kadir Topbas, said the price would
be paid in cash.Sama Dubai had also made the highest bid of 840 million
lira ($602 million) in the first written round of the tender, which was
shown live on Turkish television.
Kas Underwater Archeological Park Opens
Turkey's most popular diving town,
Kas, now has an underwater archeological
park. The Kas Underwater
Historical Research Association
(DETAD), created the park, by sinking a
ship, Uluburun-III, and then planting
imitation artifacts around it. The project
was realized with the assistance of
many volunteers and took roughly a
year to complete. The project began with an open-sea voyage by Uluburun-
III, captained by Osman Erkut. The vessel was built by the 360° Research
Group, based on the design of the original Uluburun, an ancient shipwrecked
ship off the coast of Kas . In August 2005 another Uluburun,
Uluburun-II, sailed to Cyprus, following the same route the original ship did
3,300 years ago. Upon the return of the ship from Cyprus, then Kas
Governor Nurullah Çakir proposed that the boat remain in the coastal
waters where its precursor had been discovered. In the following days the
idea of a harbor reflecting the life of the Bronze Age, in which Uluburun-II
could be exhibited, came up from this sprang the concept of an underwater
archeological park. The Society for Naval History (DETAD) was formed
by the 360° Research Group, Underwater Research Association and volunteers
from Kas in order to realize these two projects. In September 2006
DETAD constructed the Uluburun-III, destined to be sunk for the archeological
home to the park. Uluburun-III is not the only artifact in the park. Imitations
of the original ship's load of copper and bronze bullion, earthenware pots
and Kenan amphorae have also been planted on the wreck, according to
the plan of where the originals were found when the shipwreck was discovered
in 1982. The shipwreck and its environs, termed “in situ,” is divided
into a grid just as in real underwater excavations. Talks are underway with
Submarine Tourism Surfaces in Turkey
The growing worldwide interest in
tourist submarines has reached
the shores of Turkey. The first
tourist submarine is waiting to be
sent on a voyage that will reveal
the wonders of the undersea
world of the Mediterranean as
soon as adequate financial
resources can be secured. The
submarine is the result of a project
by the Bodrum-based Underwater Technologies Research Institute
(SUTA) and is hopefully scheduled for its first assignment within two years,
if funds can be allocated for its construction. SUTA President Erkan Ayral
said tourist submarines are used to promote the underwater wealth in
Greece , Southern Cyprus and Egypt, adding, “When our project is completed,
tourists would be able to see the amazing underwater scenery while
sipping tea and coffee in comfort.” He said they planned to meet with
Culture and Tourism Minister Atilla Koç in order to attain the financial support
needed to go forward with the project. Mugla Governor M. Temel
Koçaklar said Turkey's first tourist submarine would add a new flavor to
tourism in the area. The submarine is planned to be 38 meters long, 4.5
meters wide and 3 meters high with a 47-person capacity according to the
project and supported by the Culture and Tourism Ministry and Mugla
Governorship. The submarine's top speed will be 20 miles per hour and
dive to a depth of 40 meters allowing tourists to experience Turkey's fascinating
underwater life and archaeological treasures for 12 months of the
year. The submarine is expected to cost around $1.3 million and would be
built in Tuzla or Bodrum. The submarine is estimated to carry 50,000
tourists per year.
Sabanci Museum Cooperates with Louvre
Sakip Sabanci Museum, one of
Turkey's few private museums
named after the late businessmen
Sakip Sabanci, and the
French museum Louvre sealed a
five-year cultural and scientific
cooperation protocol. Guler
Sabanci, chairwoman of museum's
board of trustees, and
Director of Louvre Henri Loyrette
signed the protocol at a ceremony
which was also attended by Turkey's ambassador to Paris Osman
Koruturk. The protocol included an exhibition in Sabanci Museum in 2008
of a collection of Islamic arts from the Louvre and an exchange of experts
from both museums to conduct research in Istanbul and Paris. Sakip
Sabanci Museum is dedicated to calligraphic art, religious and state documents,
as well as paintings of the Ottoman era. Sakip Sabanci, deceased
member of the one of the wealthiest dynasties in Turkey founded the museum
in 1998, which was opened in June 2002. In November 2005 the
Museum became the first in Turkey to host a solo exhibition for a major
Western artist, when it unveiled a collection of the works of Pablo Picasso.
Ataturk Museum at Presidential Palace to be Restored
President Ahmet Necdet Sezer, whose term
in office will expire in May, will leave a
restored Ataturk Museum to his successor,
quite possibly current Prime Minister Recep
Tayyip Erdogan. Sezer, renowned for his
respect for the law and nationalist identity,
will make the Ataturk Museum at the
Presidential Palace fully restored before a
Justice and Development Party (AKP) candidate,
who is claimed to have views contrary
to Ataturk's principles and secularism, may
well assume the post of president. While a
tender was put out for work on the the
palace's facade and other work, a condition
appeared in the contract specifications saying
that "the work should be completed within 50 days." Thus the restoration
should be completed before Sezer's term in office ends. In this way,
Sezer will not leave the restoration of the Ataturk Museum to the new president,
highly likely to be elected by the AK Party under current circumstances.
Sezer's term will expire on May 16, and the official election
process will begin on April 16. With the tender, it is envisaged that the section
currently located within the structure of the palace and used as the
Ataturk Museum will be re-arranged and its exposure section will be
enlarged. A sentence in the announcement said that only Turkish investors
could compete in the tender.
Venice Biennale to Have Turkish Pavilion
APRIL’07
The Venice Biennale, the century-old art festival opening in June, will for
the first time dedicate a national pavilion to Turkey and display African contemporary
works in its core exhibition area, its President Davide Croff said.
Croff spoke before presenting ``Global Cities,'' a June-to-August joint
architecture exhibition to be held at London's Tate Modern. The title of this
year's Biennale (June 10-Nov. 21) is ``Think With the Senses -- Feel With
the Mind: Art in the Present Tense.'' Its first-ever U.S. commissioner is
Robert Storr, dean of the Yale University School of Art, who was for 12 years
a curator at New York's Museum of Modern Art. A record 77 countries will
be represented. ``Turkey has been at the Biennale even in the past, but
this year, the curator wanted to give special attention to that country,'' said
Croff. ``He thought it was time to show how far Turkey had gone in the contemporary
arts field.'' As for Africa, Storr ``thought it was a good thing to
give a voice to a world which is not yet so established in contemporary art,''
Croff said. The African display has been selected from the Sindika Dokolo
African Collection of Contemporary Art, a 500- strong, multicountry collection
set up in Luanda, Angola, by a Congolese businessman. Biennale's
Budget The Venice Biennale has an overall budget of 33 million euros
($43.9 million), according to Croff. About a third is spent on visual arts, and
another 8 to 9 million euros go toward the annual Venice Film Festival.
Non-governmental, private funding now accounts for a third of the budget,
up from 5 percent early this decade, Croff said. From June to August, Tate
Modern's huge Turbine Hall will feature a version of a show held at the
2006 Venice Architecture Biennale. Using London as a reference point, the
exhibition will show 10 global cities' transformation as their populations
have grown. The other nine cities are Cairo, Istanbul, Johannesburg, Los
Angeles, Mexico City, Mumbai, Sao Paulo, Shanghai and Tokyo. The press
conference was attended, among others, by Tate Director Nicholas Serota,
and by Francis Salway, chief executive of Land Securities Group Plc, the
exhibition's main sponsor.
to provide visitors with a one-stop shop for complementary
gadgets and meetings support ideas. Exhibiting companies
include COVR bvba, specialists in congress and events software
Success for second Polish Future Leaders Forum
26 [[
APRIL’07
Taking place just one month before doors open on IMEX on April
17th was the second ever Polish Future Leaders Forum.
Organised jointly with MPI and the University of Economics and
Computer Science in Warsaw, the Forum played host to more
than 60 students from five Polish cities, thanks to the support of
the Polish Tourist Organisation, the Convention Bureau of
Poland and Warsaw Convention Bureau. The hand-picked student
group enjoyed a day's worth of presentations from Rob
Davidson, Senior Lecturer in Business Travel and Tourism,
University of Westminster UK; Joyce Dogniez, European
Director of Operations for MPI; Dale Hudson, IMEX and
Katarzyna Sobierajska, Director of the Tourism Department of
the Polish Tourist Organisation. Both she and Edyta Musielak of
the Warsaw Destination Alliance made a point of promoting the
benefits of working within the fast-developing Polish business
tourism industry and also in local conference management.
Says Carina Bauer, IMEX Marketing and Operations Director, “
Poland is a growing market and it's terrific that industry leaders
there see the potential for educating young people and showing
them how to get involved in the events, conference and incentive
travel market. This Forum was a great chance to teach
them what is really important for the country's future and to
help to open their minds to a burgeoning new industry.” One
young participant, Marta Reinhercs, said, “Beside the obvious
benefits, like getting the chance to meet people like Rob
Davidson who is absolutely an authority in this industry, I
learned a new way to see this industry - that it demands passion
and enthusiasm if I want to succeed. That alone has helped me
decide that this is exactly what I would like to do in life.”
MPI at GIBTM
Meeting Professionals International (MPI) announced at the
2007 Gulf Incentive, Business Travel & Meetings Exhibition
(GIBTM) in Abu Dhabi that MPI would launch a Professional
Education Conference-Middle East (PEC-ME) in April 2008 in
Dubai immediately preceding GIBTM. "PEC-ME will deliver an
educational and networking experience that will attract MPI
members from all over the world, connecting provocative meetings-
industry knowledge to people and cultures from across
the planet," said MPI President and CEO Bruce MacMillan. "We
are committed to connecting our members to the opportunities
and knowledge that already exist in the Middle East and also to
the ones that are about to emerge." The UAE has invested billions
of dollars (U.S.) in meetings industry infrastructure over
the past five years, including the development of 35 five- star
hotels and some of the world's largest exhibition facilities, the
Abu Dhabi National Exhibition Centre and Exhibition City, with
more than three million square feet of space. The announcement
of PEC-ME is the first element of a new global strategy,
recently approved by the MPI International Board of Directors,
further focusing MPI on building a global meetings industry
community that provides meeting professionals with lifetime
pathways to success. "The Global Strategy Committee created
a vision that positions MPI as a truly global resource for our
members and sustains its industry leadership role," said Mary
Casey, MPI Global Strategy Committee member and vice president,
strategic account management, Starwood Hotels and
Resorts Worldwide. "PEC-ME further establishes MPI in this
growing marketplace delivering tremendous benefits to all our
members." MPI also announced its first two partners in PEC-
ME for 2008, Reed Travel Exhibitions and MCI. "These partners
will help our community reach out to the growing number of
meeting professionals who have interests in the Middle East
and provide them with access to the education, ideas and relationships
that can only be found in the industry's largest global
community," said Didier Scaillet, MPI's vice president of global
development. PEC-ME is expected to be financially self-sustaining
in its first year. MPI's global strategy released during the
Guangdong Association to Join at ITE MICE
Guangdong Hot Spring & Spa
Association will organize its members
and also invite some related
enterprises from some other
provinces of China to take part in
the new Hot Spring & Spa Pavilion
in the Travel Expo held in June in
Hong Kong . The Association will also work closely with TKS,
organizer of ITE and ITE MICE, to promote and invite related visitors
to visit the new Hot Spring & Spa Pavilion. Established in
September 2004 as a non profit making organization, the
Guangdong association has now 41 members comprising mainly
of large and medium size hot spring resorts in the province.
However, the Association will also invite established spa and
water treatment centers in the province to apply for membership.
The Guangdong Association is the only of its kind in China
, reflecting its importance and also the leading position of the
province in hot spring. It appoints China 's leading hot spring
and spa portal, China Spring Online “http://www.18.com”, as its
official portal, which forms strategic partnership with other
leading travel portals in China and supplies them with content
on hot spring. Official portal of the Association will also help in
promoting the pavilion. The Guangdong association expects to
bring in at least 20 participants. Besides exhibitors from the
Association, TKS will also invite hot spring and spa exhibitors
from other countries and regions to take part in the pavilion.
Related seminars have also been planned to enhance the overall
attractiveness. “We are particularly pleased with the cooperation
with the Guangdong Association! Popularity of hot Spring
and spa has been growing fast and from strength to strength.
Therefore, it is timely to hold the pavilion, to respond to market
demand and to further developing hot spring and spa. By focusing
on specific sector, the pavilion also complement well our
travel expos which is largely being organized geographically as
we have around 50 official pavilions by tourism authorities from
all over the world”, said KS Tong, Managing Director of TKS. The
next ITE which covers mainly leisure travel will be held from
More Than Ever, IAPCO is The PCO's Quality Brand!
Over 70 IAPCO members
evolution of the market, members decided 2 years ago to start
rethinking the quality control of the association. This led to a reenforcement
of the membership criteria under the control of an
independent Quality Control Committee. In Sevilla, the members
have unanimously voted for this new process where application
procedures have been further tightened to ensure the
Record Tourist Arrivals in Malaysia in 2006
Malaysia achieved a record number of tourists and foreign exchange earnings in
2006. While arrivals, at 17.55 million, were marginally above the projected 17.5
million, total receipts were RM1.13 billion short of the projected RM37.4 billion.
"We managed to achieve our target of 17.5 million. We crossed the figure registering
17,546,863 tourists, eventhough we had to deal with problems with taxis, immigration
and tourists accused of khalwat," Minister of Tourism Datuk Seri Tengku
Adnan Tengku Mansor said. This year, Tourism Malaysia is targeting an average
monthly arrival of 1.675, up from 1.462 in 2006. The total 20.1 million tourists are
expected to spend up to RM44.5 billion during their stay here. If Malaysia manages
to achieve this, tourism receipts would continue to be the country's second largest
revenue earner for the country after manufacturing since 2000.
Mr. Zulkifly Said (right) said that 7 thousand Turkish tourists visited Malaysia last
year, their aim for 2007 is to increase this number to 8-10 thousand tourists.
(28 April), Labuan International Sea Challenge (4-6 May) Labuan, Federal Territory
and Pantai Puteri, Melaka (4-6 May).
CLOSING CEREMONY
Although the Pesta Air will come to a close on 6 May 2007 at
Pantai Puteri , Melaka, that does not necessarily mean it is the
end for water sports in the country. Water sports will still continue
throughout the country as there are activities and competitions
planned throughout the whole year.
PESTA AIR AS CATALYST FOR TOURISM
Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre First in Asia to be
Green Globe Benchmarked
In another progressive leap, the Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre (the Centre) has
proven its commitment to excellence by becoming one of two convention centres
worldwide to be the first in their industry to achieve the prestigious Green Globe
Benchmarked status. Awarded under the international Green Globe
Benchmarking programme, this Benchmarked status places the Centre as pioneer
of the Asian region. A worldwide Benchmarking, Certification and improvement
system, Green Globe assists the international travel and tourism industry to
attain sustainability. It provides a certification system that responds directly to the
major environmental problems facing the planet, including the greenhouse effect,
over-use of freshwater resources and the destruction of biodiversity. The Centre's
receipt of the Green Globe Benchmarked status is in recognition of its conscientious
first steps towards improving their business and community's environmental,
social and economic performance. On achieving this status, Mr Geoff Hayward,
Director of Facilities, Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre says: “It is really quite a
coup and we are extremely proud to be the first Asian convention centre to be
recognised for operating with these environmental performance standards. This is
certainly in line with our goal to establish the Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre as
not only a world-class international venue, but a leader in the local community
working towards more environmentally sound operating processes”. The
Benchmarked status commits the Centre to a standard of excellence in energy and
water consumption, total waste production and community commitment, as determined
by their unique earth check measures. It also commits the Centre to
implementing an integrated environmental and social sustainability policy. With a
commendable sustainability policy already in place, the Centre achieved above
earth check 's best practice results in energy consumption (41 per cent), water
consumption (27 per cent), water saving (25 points), waste recycling (7.6 points)
and pesticides (25 points). According to Mr Hayward, measures implemented to
accomplish this include taking maximum advantage of the Centre's natural light,
courtesy of its intelligent building design; keeping a keen eye on energy-saving
technology innovations; and pushing the 3R (Reduce, Re-use and Recycle) campaign.
The latter encourages the Centre's staff and visitors to segregate their rubbish
into colourful bins strategically located around the Centre. Mr Jason Keating,
General Manager of Green Globe Asia Pacific and Green Globe International says:
“I am delighted that the Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre has achieved
Benchmarked status. The Centre is a prime example of an organisation committed
to environmentally sustainable tourism. They have demonstrated through a
variety of initiatives, that the business and its employees can make a difference by
reducing their environmental impact. The commitment they have shown with their
participation in the Green Globe programme and their achievements set an example
for similar facilities worldwide and other businesses to pursue.” The Centre's
Benchmarked status will be reviewed annually, against changing criteria to reflect
the increasing sophistication in environmental needs. From here, the next step for
the Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre will be moving forward towards being Green
Globe certified.
online survey conducted by CEI Asia.
“We are building on a strong global portfolio of meetings and incentives
the Middle East. This demonstrates Reed's growing commitment to the
global meetings industry and the future development of CIBTM is central
to our ambitions to create the leading event for China & the wider
Asia region.” Says Paul Kennedy MBE, Group Event Director for Reed
the region and will see new initiatives this year in line with the repositioning
withinthe Reed Travel Exhibitions Meetings portfolio. We are
introducing some of the core brand values of EIBTM and our other portfolio
events, to ensure that CIBTM provides the best business opportunities,
professional education and networking events throughout the
event. We are delighted to see that CIBTM came first in the survey conducted
by CEI Asia, this helps to emphasise the importance of CIBTM's
position in the industry for the Asia Pacific region.” Says Graeme
Gulf Air Hosted Global Aviation Technology Convention in Bahrain
The 95 th International Airlines Technical Pool
(IATP) Convention, hosted by Gulf Air, organized at
the Gulf Hotel Convention Centre. The inaugural
ceremony was attended by Civil Aviation Affairs
Under Secretary Captain Abdulrahman Al Gaoud
and Gulf Air Acting President and Chief Executive
Ahmed Al Hammadi and other dignitaries. "In
order to meet these challenges, new collaborations
and partnerships are vital; brainstorming
and pooling of ideas is critical and, sharing and exchanging issues of
concern are essential," said Mr Al Hammadi in his opening speech,
highlighting the dominant role played by technology and the challenges
due to technology changes in the aviation industry. He also underscored
two issues currently faced by the aviation industry: "On one hand we see
an enormous growth in the number of aircraft but the phasing out of old
aircraft is much less. On the other hand we have a very limited capacity
of hangars. This has lead to a critical situation; shortage of bays and
demand for slots has pushed up maintenance costs, adding a heavy
burden on airlines, which are already over-burdened with mounting fuel
costs. Fuel is still a global headache - both in terms of cost, and as
importantly, in terms of the new focus on carbon emissions," he added.
He also praised the cooperation among the member airlines in various
technical issues. The three-day event was attended by about 400 delegates
representing global aviation and related industries, including aircraft
manufacturers Airbus and Boeing. Over several technical sessions
and workshops, delegates discussed technical issues relating to the
introduction of A380 and Boeing 787aircraft including spares provisioning,
the business related to ground handling and ground maintenance
equipment, aircraft recovery kit contents and certification of kits. As
hosts to the event, Gulf Air took the delegates, who have come from far
and wide, on a tour of the Kingdom and accorded an evening reception
at the Bahrain International Circuit (BIC) on Sunday March 11, where the
guests were introduced to traditional Arabian folk music and dance,
henna painting and falconry. The IATP meet was hailed as an important
gathering of technical professionals from global aviation industry, who,
in the spirit of co-operation, gather twice a year and discuss sharing of
resources, thus generating economic savings, while improving operating
efficiency and other issues. The IATP, established in 1948, is a convention
of airlines made up of over 100 member airlines, 28 associate
members including aircraft manufacturers such as Airbus and Boeing
with over 400 members from the aviation industry on its roll. Over the
years, the organisation, which contributes immensely to the aviation
industry, promoting unparalleled safety in the skies and forging strong
bonds between airlines around the world, has aimed at providing a global
airline network to facilitate the exchange of ideas and cooperation.
HEALTH & WEALTH INCENTIVE MAGAZINE
By:Dr. Kazim Besirli Istanbul University Health Tourism
Health tourism can be defined as the people traveling to other destinations
to be treated and thermal therapy is greatly included in
this definition. The dates and the institutions as far back as the
Roman times. "Travel to be cured" had been said by the Moslem
prophet Hz.Muhammed and this shows that this habit has been
formed ages ago and brought about the institutions that reached to
our age. Before the Romans especially some of the antique cities at
the Western Anatolia had central heating systems and the hot
water baths"HAMAM" worked with the thermal waters. Especially
during the Roman Period, thermal water usage as a classical
Roman custom has spread to the world. Also Cesar is known to
have said that "the tribes without thermal waters and hamams are
barbarians". The Seljuk and the Ottomans have valued this old
Anatolian tradition and had the Turkish Hamam idiom accepted
internationally as the Roman Hamams. The geological thermalists
use the SPA or HAMAM as a shortened definition for the thermal
institutions. Turkey is located on a very important geothermal belt
which in a way is a gift for the country but by the same token not a
very joyful situation in the short/long term. However, here we have
to talk about the healing thermal waters and proudly add that
Turkey is amongst the first 7 in rich geothermal sources with great
potential. There are more than 1300 thermal waters from
20degreesC to 110degreesC, with a floe of 2-500lt./sn.
There are approximately 250 thermal centers from these geothermal
resources.
Old Hieropolis city was built on the rich mineral waters running
underneath her and the white lakes formed on the hills from the
mineral water flowing from the mountains, is spectacular. No
doubt, that the habitants of Kaunos of old Lycian has had baths at
the rich muddy mineral rich waters of the Koycegiz Lake.
Izmir-Balcova thermal waters are located in the Agamemnon
Hamam place that has been known for the healing effects of its
waters since the Roman period. The first settlement place of the
Ottoman Empire, Bursa had been established at the skirts of the
Mount Olympos now called Uludag. The natural thermal waters at
Cekirge encouraged the Ottomans to built big domed hamam complexes
at the place where Roman and Byzantium hamam complexes
were during the reign of I Murat (1359-1389).
From Romans to Cleopatra
Health tourism these days makes us recall SPA Centres. The original
name being "Salus Per Aquam""SPA"is the name of the water
therapies exercised since the Roman times.
Healing with water means the usage of water in different heat levels
amd with different methods giving the feeling of wellness with
the application of these systems in a compact theraphy.
The mineral water, in other words thermal waters, has healing
effects from high-blood pressure to cholestrol, from artirithis to
dermatological care. Therefore whenever water and health are
pronounced together, "thermal waters and hamam" comes to our
visiual thinking. This has been a trend all through history, even
Cleopatra came to the Bolu thermal waters for beauty cures.
The civilization brought stress that created health problems
resulting in job inefficiency. This situation created the need to
escape into nature and get cures in thermal waters and relaxing
climatic conditions.
Thermalism and Climatizm
The use of mineral thermal waters and mud's together with the climatic
and environmental factors of the area, under the guidance of

Thermal waters are widely used for balneology. Balneotheraphy is
the cure applied in mineral thermal waters and is generally applied
under these headings;
Thalassotheraphy: Health from the Sea
The Sea and its by-products are used for this purpose as thermal
applications to prevent health and as a means of curing certain illnesses.
Within the scope of the health tourism it is widely used
these days. The sand baths are traditional in Turkey's cure culture
for the treatment of aches and pains at the lower back and joints.
Sea water is the most vital element of thalassotheraphy. Sea water
has somewhat similar chemical combination of our blood. Sea
water can be used by skin absorption, drinking, or breathing. It creates
an ideal surrounding for exercise and creates a more advantageous
physical conditions compared to unsalted water.
The sea shore atmosphere carries positive effects and most important
of all it has the microclimatic, biological, psychological and
social useful effects of a kind of ecological treatment.
Thermal Fish for Healing
"Kangal Fish Thermal Center" at Mid Anatolia is an extraordinary
and important thermal cure center, a unique leader of its kind in
the whole world. This center is located 13km. to Sivas/Kangal and
has 36 degrees warm curing waters with bicarbonate, calcium,
magnesium and the little 2 to 10cm length fish that give positive
results at the cure of certain kind of skin diseases.
At Sivas there are also Hot Cermik and Cold Cermik thermal centers
that are famous for the cure of certain illnesses.
A Healthy, Peaceful, Happy Holiday
The demands for the cure and Thermal Therapy has created a new
understanding of visit to a country with specialized hotels, services,
understanding , catering and health cure applications within the
purpose of feeling well and vacationing at the same time. This we
now call WELLNESS. Most of the hotels, resort, holiday villages
have brought together the most important SPA centers of Europe in
their institutions with additional investments to make their clients
feel WELL. The German Kneippness brand patented therapies, aromatic
he GALLIPOLI YACHT RALLY 2007 will again sail to Anzac Cove,
attend the 92nd Anzac Day Dawn Service and sail along the
Gallipoli Peninsula and down the Turkish Aegean Coast.
The Rally will commence from the Dardanelles city of Canakkale and the
yacht charter will conclude at Cesme with stopovers at Anzac Cove,
Bozcaada, Assos, Ayvalik and Foca.
Apart from the special symbolism and emotion of being part of the Dawn
Service at Anzac Cove on the 25th April and the Commemorative Service
at Lone Pine or Chunuk Bair, the special cultural and sightseeing program
being offered in the program will provide all participants with an everlasting
memory. Optional tours include the ancient city of Troy and Pergamon.
A tour of the ancient city of Ephesus and the city of Istanbul will take place
after the charter yacht handover at Cesme. More details of these tours are
contained in the Gallipoli Yacht Rally program for 2007. An optional tour of
Capadoccia is also offered either before the start of the rally program or
at the end.
Early in 2001 the then Turkish Ambassador to Australia, His Excellency Mr
Umut ARIK, announced that a series of annual yacht races would be held
in Turkey to commemorate the first Turkish-Anzac encounter at Gallipoli
in 1915 which led to an eternal bond of friendship between the Turks,
Australian and New Zealanders. This led to the first visit to Gallipoli in 2001
of Australian and New Zealand yachtsmen to participate in the commemorative
services and enjoy Turkish hospitality as well as discover the rich
antiquities of the country. The GALLIPOLI YACHT RALLY has the full support
of the Turkish Government and obtains official permission for its comprehensive
program.
The Gallipoli Yacht Rally has developed great friendships and cooperation
at the Ports of Call and often the Mayor of the town or the Provincial
Governor will attend the Rally’s informal functions.
YACHT RALLY
A yacht rally is a series of short day passages, with at least one day
between each to allow for sightseeing. This type of event attracts people
who are not fully experienced sailors and sailors who would not be happy
with long races that may incorporate night sailing or tricky navigation. For
those who may feel less competent, at an extra cost, a day skipper can be
employed. However, these yachts are easy to sail and can be handled competently
by four people. The yacht rally concept allows for a series of races
to be conducted between yachts of various sizes, speed and crew experience
with a winner (or winners) being determined by arbitrary handicaps.
This table could include yacht length, penalties for motoring, bonus points
for sailing the course, 'spot' navigation etc. Because of the difference in
length of the yachts, there may be handicap starts to allow the yachts to
arrive at the finish at about the same time. The rally concept has the
emphasis on fun and sailing enjoyment with a party at the end of each leg.
The first Exhibition will take place at the Kadir Has University
"Rezan Has Museum" at Halic (Golden Horn).
"From Collection to Creation - Gonul Paksoy"
The exhibition will be opened on the 19th April for two weeks.
It will be within the International Congress of Textiles and Carpets, ICOC.
The second exhibition will again be at the Has University to celebrate the
10th anniversary of the University.
"Soil shaped by Culture" archeological collection of pottery - Gonul Paksoy
The exhibition will open on the 8th May and will be for four months.
The third Exhibition took place at Kuwait between March 3-8 2007 and it was
on the aerations of Gonul Paksoy.
"Timeless Purity" (minimalism) was the name of the exhibition.
Alongside the new textiles you use in the garments you create, you also use
quite precious and very original old fabrics. You treat each one in a special
manner and sometimes you dye them. What is your reason for using and
dyeing old fabrics? Why do you feel the need to do this?
The reason why I dye fabrics anew is in part to be able to play with their texture
and in part because I do not like their color. By playing with their texture
and color, I obtain a totally different fabric. I transform the colors into
mine. Dyeing old fabrics, especially Ottoman textiles, can have some incredibly
beautiful results. Many of these fabrics had once been used in the imperial
palace or in places having to do with the court. The best craftsmen were
employed to weave them, the best threads, the best dyes, the best silver
threads were used to produce them. I must say that, the fabrics woven in
Istanbul, Edirne and Hereke hold a special place in my eyes.
38 [[
APRIL’07
Isn't it risky to use this kind of material?
Textile products need to be preserved with great care. You need to have special
conditions to reduce their rapid deterioration. This is something only
certain museums are able to achieve. When I purchase certain fragments, I
see that they have been preserved with care by their previous owners
between several sheets of paper. This gives fabric more endurance.
Whereas there are others who , even if they keep something because they
think it is of value, they can cause it harm by keeping it in inappropriate conditions
or without special care. And such fabrics demand much more attention
when they are cleaned, washed and dyed. There are some valuable
pieces amongst the old fabrics I have bought and some of them are in pretty
poor state. Indeed, this is a form of risk taking. I succeed in recycling
such a fragment then I win, and my gain is a fantastic piece, but if I don't,
then I accept losing the money and effort I spent on it. At times, a piece of
fabric that looks sturdy may begin to tear once you start detaching it. You
need to be very attentive and act with care in this job. From time to time people
ask me whether I do not feel uneasy when I modify a kaftan. No, I don't.
I protect everything that needs protection. This is why I have a lovely collection
of textiles. If one day a textile museum is founded in Turkey, or if I can
set up a museum myself, I shall exhibit all of them. If a big museum is founded
and I can have confidence in their management, I may even donate my
acquisitions. I do not destroy things, I believe that I re-infuse life into those
things that have been abandoned and are about to disappear. I add them my
energy and incorporate a tremendous amount of love and effort in them. I
endow them with an artistic identity. The women who have bought Gonul
Paksoy garments become addicted to them and they become an inseparable
part of their lives.

COVER STORY
There are traits that create mystical undertones in your garment. Where
does such design find its source?
MY aim is not, of course, to create a mystical garment. The garments worn
by Sufi dervishes were my starting point, but I gradually developed a style of
my own. I reached a synthesis here. When the garments or fabrics you have
found or have had woven, dyed and used in new applications become incorporated
into the realm of your creativity, your thoughts and your feelings, you
end up by creating a work of your own. What I call my design, is none other
than a new arrangement that takes shape under the influence of all that I
have accumulated up to then. There is a certain atmosphere about the things
I create that can be attributed to this and what makes them look mystical is
their simplicity, their being free of nonessentials. The tones I use and which
lead you to think that you are seeing everything behind a grey-colored veil,
could be reinforcing the mystical impression they create. I can easily say
however, that when I started off I had no claim of creating mystical garments.
Can we say that you are using fusion in your fashion designs?
I rearrange materials according to my own taste, my own way of sensing
things and my own observations. There are new fabrics and old fabrics,
things Oriental and things Western. Speaking of East and West , I am speaking
of course of Turkey. 95% of the fabrics I use are from Turkey. There
might be some Central Asian fabrics and embroideries among them. What it
boils down to though is whatever material I may be using becomes my own.
Fabrics undergo enormous change as a result of different applications. This
may also be considered to be a kind of fusion, a different kind of synthesis.
And here it is your talent, your knowledge and your wealth of experience that
show you the way. For, you begin to search, to see, to choose things and to
39
COVER STORY INCENTIVE MAGAZINE
elaborate ideas on them. This leads you to new designs. The same thing is
true for clothes, for jeweler, for everything I do. Alongside all this, if you
spend all your time producing things and working very hard you begin to get
closer to the results you would like to achieve. You do not of course think you
are going to create a synthesis while you are doing all this. But then you
realize that you have created a new synthesis. I have never considered
myself an orientalist. I do not make authentic clothes, but I use authentic
fabrics. I incorporate authentic fabrics into designs that are much more simple,
uncluttered and with plain lines. Looked at from this point of view you
may be right in using the term fusion. Still, I would not like to limit what I am
doing to this term. I do not want to place what I do in this or that current. I
have created my own style. There are no tags on any of the objects I choose
to define as art objects, I choose to define as art objects, but people can easily
see that it is my work.
Gonul Paksoy says here that she has little to do with fashion and that she is
not a fashion designer and yet she designs something and in doing so She
conceives it as a work of Art.
Meet at the Carpet World-ICOC 2007
Central Asia has been famous for its fabrics for long time. Arts fabrics of
the early Middle Ages take place among the most significant achievements
in Eastern applied arts. Many elements of fabrics' woven patterns and plots
were used in Eastern silver jewelleries, wood engraving and ganch. Textile
materials were used to make clothes for court officials of the highest rank.
These were all luxury items. They used to predominate among the items in
international trade together with jewellery, valuable weapons, glass, etc.
The majority of trade goods between Eastern Asia and the Mediterranean
had been carried along the famous Silk Road. All branches of the Silk Road
passed through certain cities in Central Asia. Those famous and wealthy
cities were Bukhara, Samarkand, Merv, Khiva, Fergana, Kashgar and
Yarkand.
In 14th and 15th centuries Central Asia became one of scientific, cultural
and art centres of Eastern Islamic world under Timurids rule. Timur established
his empire's capital in Samarkand and forced handicraftsmen captured
in battles settle down there. They significantly contributed in rapid
development of Timur's Empire by using their knowledge and experience
in architecture, textile and arts. Consequently, this region became a centre
of silk-spinning and well known for its delicate fabrics.
These fabrics were used to make clothes, turban scarves, women's
scarves, patterned head wear, embroidered skullcaps, decorated curtains,
blanket, mattress and pillow cases, horsecloth, as well as for floor and wall
decoration, covering of marquees and yurtas.
Following series of historical periods in the second half of 19th century
weaving became the most developed branch of handicraft. Many cities and
villages of Central Asia such as Bukhara, Margilan, Hodjent, Kitab, Karshi,
Samarkand and Fergana were famed for their fabrics different from each
other with appearance and patterns. The most popular fabrics were kala-
mi, alocha, adras, chit, susi, sateen, satin and bakhmal. 60s and 70s of 19th
century witnessed prosperity of silk weaving.
In 19th century Central Asian Khans were after luxury and grandeur of their
palaces instead of arts and philosophy. Equipping and clothing revealed the
main symbols of power, wealth and prestige of Emir's court. Travelling
princes, ambassadors and high ranking guests who visited Emirs received
caftans and similar valuable items as presents. Caftans served not only as
presents for guests, but they could also be used for payment of services.
Khiva's Khan gave caftans to mercenaries for cut heads of his enemies.
Caftans were priced as four-head, twelve-head or forty-head according to
quality of fabric. People could easily be recognized by their clothes.
Production of arts fabrics required involvement of several textile professions.
Weavers divided into two groups - one of them being occupied directly
in weaving. The other group called 'aburbandi' designed patterns for fabrics.
Special craftsmen called 'rangrez' were occupied in dying fabrics
according to their patterns. The work of rangrez required not only technical
knowledge but also sophisticated arts skills. Ancient symbolic and
magical figures served as fabrics' ornaments. Different circles, discs and
stars formed an ornament commonly called a moon. A palmetto called
'bodom' was among widely used ornaments. Plant motives were the most
popular ones. Notable patterns were known among craftsmen as 'lamp',
'tortoise', 'lion's tail', 'pistachio', etc. There are many common features in
ornaments of adras, velvet and silk, as in book design and architectural
ornaments.
Ikats are the most interesting among Central Asian fabrics. Wonderful
colours and unique patterns remind modern paintings. “Abr” (Persian -
cloud) is appropriate and traditional name of the most prestigious and
beautiful Central Asian fabric. In Arabic it is called asab, in Turkish -
Miniatures of Heart provide
the basic information
in studying Central
Asian clothing of 15th-
16th centuries. In that
period Herat was a cultural
centre and trendsetter
of entire Middle
East. On the one hand
clothes of that period
combined features of
Turkish and Persian-
Mesopotamian clothing,
and on the other hand
Mongolian and Chinese
patterns.
In Bukhara, which was
accepted as a trendsetter,
men's caftans of silk
outer clothing of nobles.
Content and style of
women's clothing differed
clothing was different from others not only by style but also by width, height
and colour patterns.
In Uzbekistan there are certain types of men's and women's clothes, which
are different in style and purpose. The have different names: 1-Kaltacha. 2-
Paranja. 3-Kaltacha-mursak. 4-Chapan-tin, joma. 5-Chapan-tun. 6-
Chapan-yaktak. 7-Yaktak. 8-Kamzol. 9-Kamzol-yaktak. 10-Kurta. 11-Tun.
12-Kamzol. Many of these items are present in Mehmet Cetinkaya's ikat
collection.
Mehmet Cetinkaya's collection in Istanbul gallery has wide variety of samples
with different features. One of the valuable collections comprises
clothes of Uzbekistan's ikat. The collection consists of 99 caftans. These
caftans made of outstanding ikat shall be exhibited in ICOC conference in
April 2007. The exhibition shall take place in the Museum of Turkish and
Islamic Arts. The majority of items in this collection are made in 19th century,
and there are several clothes made in the second half of 18th century.
Abr patterns are the common feature of the items in this collection.
These clothes are made of silk and silk mixture fabrics: shohi, taffeta, satin,
duruya, adras hisari, Karshi and Fergana silk mixture fabrics.
The collection mainly consists of women's clothes, and there are also sev-
the Biennial as a platform of imagination, dialogue and production. The
issues that the Biennial is focused on will be explored and realised both
dialogues among international artists, local public and specific contexts.
Hardly appeared in tourist maps of ‹stanbul, these sites are culturally and
situations as a force of urban transformation. The artists to participate
out research both in Turkey and abroad with this objective. The assessment
The ‹stanbul Foundation for Culture and Arts has been organising the
International ‹stanbul Biennial since 1987. The Biennial aims to create a
meeting point in ‹stanbul in the field of visual arts between artists from
diverse cultures and the audience. The nine biennials ‹KSV has organised
up to now have enabled the formation of an international cultural network
between local and international art circles, artists, curators and art critics
by bringing together new trends in contemporary art every two years.
Considered as one of the most prestigious biennials alongside Venice,
Sao Paolo and Sydney, the International ‹stanbul Biennial prefers an exhibition
model which enables a dialogue between artists and the audience
through the work of the artists instead of a national representation
model. The curator, appointed by an international advisory board, develops
a conceptual framework according to which a variety of artists and
projects are invited to the exhibition. The most comprehensive international
art exhibition organised both in Turkey and throughout the geographical
sphere we are in, the ‹stanbul Biennial plays an important role
in the promotion of contemporary artists not only from Turkey but from a
number of different countries in the international arena. The opportunity
to follow developments and discussions in the art world, and therefore a
complimentary educational program is provided both for students and
viewers of art through the exhibitions and simultaneously translated
panel discussions, conferences and workshops organised within the
scope of the exhibitions. After the first two biennials realised under the
general coordination of Beral Madra in 1987 and 1989, ‹KSV decided to
adapt a single curator system following the ‹stanbul Biennial directed by
Vas›f Kortun in 1992. The Biennial was organised under the curatorship of
René Block in 1995, Rosa Martínez in 1997, Paolo Colombo in 1999, Yuko
Hasegawa in 2001, Dan Cameron in 2003 and Charles Esche and Vas›f
Kortun in 2005, and will be realised by the San Francisco-based Chinese
curator Hou Hanru in 2007.
Ankara the capital of Turkey is located in the centre of Anatolia province.
With a known history of around 3000, Ankara has seen great heights in the
past. Around 3000 years ago, the Hittites established a city by the name of
Akuwash (old name for Ankara) at the intersection of two trade routes in
Turkey. During its earlier phase, Ankara was ruled by Phrygians,
Macedonians (under Alexander the Great), and Romans. Seljuk Turks captured
the city in 1071 AD and renamed it as Enguriye. Most important
moment in the history of Ankara came when Atatürk founded his provisional
government here in 1920, and in 1923 when it became the capital of
Turkish Republic. The city has seen a number of changes since then, however
it has been successful enough in maintaining a fine balance between
the old and the new and thereby living up to its unique identity as the
"Melting Pot of East and West". Today, Ankara is a sprawling urban mass
thoroughly organized and well - planned and much European in look than
most of the cities in Turkey. Its wide-open roads, large hotels, restaurants
and government offices distinguish the city. Besides, there are several
tourist attractions and meetings in the city making it an ideal destination
for the tourists and mice industry.
B.C. (at present day Bayrakl› ), and at that time shared, with Troy, the most
advanced culture in Western Anatolia. By 1500 B.C., it had fallen under the
Izmir, the known as Smyrna, ranked as one of the important cities of the
Ionian Federation, and it was during this period, one of the city's most brilliant,
that Homer is believed to nave lived here. The Lydian conquest of the
city, around 600 B.C., brought this period to an end, and Izmir remained little
more than a village throughout the Lydian and the subsequent sixth
century B.C Perisian rule. In the fourth century B.C. a new city was built at
the instigation of Alexander the Great on the slopes of Mt. Pagos
(Kadifekale) Izmir's Roman period, from 27 B.C., gave birth to its second
KARAVAN has been active in the tourism industry since 1969.
The company is owned and managed by the Baltazzi family,
which has a long tradition of hospitality in Turkey. Sultan
Abdul Mecid was a guest in their Izmir (Area) home in 1850
as was Sultan Abdul Aziz in 1863. Aristide Bey Baltazzi was
officially recognised for his contribution in organising the
first international exhibition in Istanbul (The "Osmanli
Sergisi" - "The Ottoman Exhibition") in 1863, which created
the first tourism group movement ever to Turkey. To these
experiences and traditions the Baltazzi family has added
modern methods and technology to create the KARAVAN
GROUP of today with its divisions of Karavan MICE, Karavan
Incoming, Karavan Mar each of them leaders in their sector.
