NEWS LINE TURKEY INCENTIVE MAGAZINE Millions Visited Museums in Turkey The Topkapi Palace, Ayasofya (Hagia Sophia) and the ancient city of Efes ( Ephesus ) have become the favorite sites of tourists visiting Turkey . According to the Turkish Ministry of Culture & Tourism Directorate of Cultural Heritage & Museums, 1.8 million tourists visited Istanbul 's Topkapi Palace while the Hagia Sophia hosted 1.6 million tourists and the ancient city of Ephesus hosted 1.2 million tourists. On the other hand, 16 million tourists visited 313 museums and ancients ruins throughout Turkey in 2006. Sabanci Museum Cooperates with Louvre Sakip Sabanci Museum, one of Turkey's few private museums named after the late businessmen Sakip Sabanci, and the French museum Louvre sealed a five-year cultural and scientific cooperation protocol. Guler Sabanci, chairwoman of museum's board of trustees, and Director of Louvre Henri Loyrette signed the protocol at a ceremony which was also attended by Turkey's ambassador to Paris Osman Koruturk. The protocol included an exhibition in Sabanci Museum in 2008 of a collection of Islamic arts from the Louvre and an exchange of experts from both museums to conduct research in Istanbul and Paris. Sakip Sabanci Museum is dedicated to calligraphic art, religious and state documents, as well as paintings of the Ottoman era. Sakip Sabanci, deceased member of the one of the wealthiest dynasties in Turkey founded the museum in 1998, which was opened in June 2002. In November 2005 the Museum became the first in Turkey to host a solo exhibition for a major Western artist, when it unveiled a collection of the works of Pablo Picasso. Ataturk Museum at Presidential Palace to be Restored President Ahmet Necdet Sezer, whose term in office will expire in May, will leave a restored Ataturk Museum to his successor, quite possibly current Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan. Sezer, renowned for his respect for the law and nationalist identity, will make the Ataturk Museum at the Presidential Palace fully restored before a Justice and Development Party (AKP) candidate, who is claimed to have views contrary to Ataturk's principles and secularism, may well assume the post of president. While a tender was put out for work on the the palace's facade and other work, a condition appeared in the contract specifications saying that "the work should be completed within 50 days." Thus the restoration should be completed before Sezer's term in office ends. In this way, Sezer will not leave the restoration of the Ataturk Museum to the new president, highly likely to be elected by the AK Party under current circumstances. Sezer's term will expire on May 16, and the official election process will begin on April 16. With the tender, it is envisaged that the section currently located within the structure of the palace and used as the Ataturk Museum will be re-arranged and its exposure section will be enlarged. A sentence in the announcement said that only Turkish investors could compete in the tender. 22 [[ Venice Biennale to Have Turkish Pavilion APRIL’07 The Venice Biennale, the century-old art festival opening in June, will for the first time dedicate a national pavilion to Turkey and display African contemporary works in its core exhibition area, its President Davide Croff said. Croff spoke before presenting ``Global Cities,'' a June-to-August joint architecture exhibition to be held at London's Tate Modern. The title of this year's Biennale (June 10-Nov. 21) is ``Think With the Senses -- Feel With the Mind: Art in the Present Tense.'' Its first-ever U.S. commissioner is Robert Storr, dean of the Yale University School of Art, who was for 12 years a curator at New York's Museum of Modern Art. A record 77 countries will be represented. ``Turkey has been at the Biennale even in the past, but this year, the curator wanted to give special attention to that country,'' said Croff. ``He thought it was time to show how far Turkey had gone in the contemporary arts field.'' As for Africa, Storr ``thought it was a good thing to give a voice to a world which is not yet so established in contemporary art,'' Croff said. The African display has been selected from the Sindika Dokolo African Collection of Contemporary Art, a 500- strong, multicountry collection set up in Luanda, Angola, by a Congolese businessman. Biennale's Budget The Venice Biennale has an overall budget of 33 million euros ($43.9 million), according to Croff. About a third is spent on visual arts, and another 8 to 9 million euros go toward the annual Venice Film Festival. Non-governmental, private funding now accounts for a third of the budget, up from 5 percent early this decade, Croff said. From June to August, Tate Modern's huge Turbine Hall will feature a version of a show held at the 2006 Venice Architecture Biennale. Using London as a reference point, the exhibition will show 10 global cities' transformation as their populations have grown. The other nine cities are Cairo, Istanbul, Johannesburg, Los Angeles, Mexico City, Mumbai, Sao Paulo, Shanghai and Tokyo. The press conference was attended, among others, by Tate Director Nicholas Serota, and by Francis Salway, chief executive of Land Securities Group Plc, the exhibition's main sponsor. Dedeman Group Supports Future of Tourism Industry The Mehmet Kemal Dedeman Research & Development Project Contest Award Ceremony is organized at Dedeman Hotel Istanbul. The project contest is organizing every year in the memory of Mehmet Kemal Dedeman, the establisher of Dedeman Group, in order to support the development of mining and tourism sectors in our country. Before presenting awards, CEO of Dedeman Holding; Murat Dedeman and President of Dedeman Holding Advisory Board made a welcome speech to all guests representing mining and tourism industries. This year, there were no First Prize winners but there were two Second Prize winners and one project awarded as the third best project. Therefore the difference at money award for the first prize is solved by giving scholarship to two students at all 14 universities that have mining courses. On the other hand, Mümtaz Peker, received First Prize in Tourism with his project titled “Social organization for collective pioneer action in health tourism”. Pinar Yalçin received Second Prize with her project; “Capacity and Best Location for Health Tourism to be developed according to geothermal resources in Eskisehir ”. Peyman Ozan received Third Prize with her project “Work Plan of An International psychiatry hospital that will use positive science together with music therapy”.
APRIL’07 Hilton Plans 25 New Hotels in Turkey The Hilton Hotels Corporation has decided to speed up their investments in Turkey. Didier Martin, President of East Europe and Turkey Operations said that they have plans to open 25 new hotels in Turkey under the Hilton Garden Inn and Hampton by Hilton brands. HHC, a member of Hilton International since a year now, plans to speed up their investments worldwide as well as in Turkey. Therefore, Mr. Martin said in an interview with Hürriyet Newspaper, Hilton has plans to open 25 hotels that mostly focus on middle class customers in Turkey . On the other hand, H ilton Istanbul and Hilton ParkSA General Manager; Andrew Jacobs commented to Turkish Daily News, “We have a very strong presence in Turkey and now with the integration of HHC with Hilton International, we have a very strong presence in Istanbul and now it is possible to expand the new brands into secondary cities or smaller cities in Turkey. There's already been a discussion about several cities - Bursa, Denizli, Eskisehir, Samsun, Trabzon, Erzurum, Gaziantep, Sanliurfa and Malatya.” At present HHC has 775 hotels, which translates as 110,000 rooms. This gives it the largest portfolio of any U.S. company. It is also preparing to open 75 hotels outside of North America, 26 of which will be in Europe . HHC has become the biggest hotel innovator in India with an agreement for hotel and residence projects signed with DLF Limited. The plan calls for opening 50-75 Hiltons, Hilton Garden Inns and Homewood Suites by Hilton in India. Another important development involves China with the franchising of 25 Hilton Garden Inn Hotels in Beijing, Shanghai and Tianshin with Deutsche Asset Management and HQ Asia Pacific. Hilton Hotels and Conrad Istanbul Honor Travel Agents Hilton Turkey and Conrad Istanbul announced best performed travel agencies that sell their rooms. The award ceremony took place at Hilton Istanbul Convention Center, for the first time together with Conrad Istanbul as a result of an international integration.
