NEWS LINE TURKEY INCENTIVE MAGAZINE Kas Underwater Archeological Park Opens Turkey's most popular diving town, Kas, now has an underwater archeological park. The Kas Underwater Historical Research Association (DETAD), created the park, by sinking a ship, Uluburun-III, and then planting imitation artifacts around it. The project was realized with the assistance of many volunteers and took roughly a year to complete. The project began with an open-sea voyage by Uluburun- III, captained by Osman Erkut. The vessel was built by the 360° Research Group, based on the design of the original Uluburun, an ancient shipwrecked ship off the coast of Kas . In August 2005 another Uluburun, Uluburun-II, sailed to Cyprus, following the same route the original ship did 3,300 years ago. Upon the return of the ship from Cyprus, then Kas Governor Nurullah Çakir proposed that the boat remain in the coastal waters where its precursor had been discovered. In the following days the idea of a harbor reflecting the life of the Bronze Age, in which Uluburun-II could be exhibited, came up from this sprang the concept of an underwater archeological park. The Society for Naval History (DETAD) was formed by the 360° Research Group, Underwater Research Association and volunteers from Kas in order to realize these two projects. In September 2006 DETAD constructed the Uluburun-III, destined to be sunk for the archeological park. The ship was submerged on Oct. 27, 2006 in the Bay of Hidayet, home to the park. Uluburun-III is not the only artifact in the park. Imitations of the original ship's load of copper and bronze bullion, earthenware pots and Kenan amphorae have also been planted on the wreck, according to the plan of where the originals were found when the shipwreck was discovered in 1982. The shipwreck and its environs, termed “in situ,” is divided into a grid just as in real underwater excavations. Talks are underway with the British Nautical Archeological Society (NAS) over using the Kas Underwater archeological park for educational purposes, as well as recreational diving. Submarine Tourism Surfaces in Turkey The growing worldwide interest in tourist submarines has reached the shores of Turkey. The first tourist submarine is waiting to be sent on a voyage that will reveal the wonders of the undersea world of the Mediterranean as soon as adequate financial resources can be secured. The submarine is the result of a project by the Bodrum-based Underwater Technologies Research Institute (SUTA) and is hopefully scheduled for its first assignment within two years, if funds can be allocated for its construction. SUTA President Erkan Ayral said tourist submarines are used to promote the underwater wealth in Greece , Southern Cyprus and Egypt, adding, “When our project is completed, tourists would be able to see the amazing underwater scenery while sipping tea and coffee in comfort.” He said they planned to meet with Culture and Tourism Minister Atilla Koç in order to attain the financial support needed to go forward with the project. Mugla Governor M. Temel Koçaklar said Turkey's first tourist submarine would add a new flavor to tourism in the area. The submarine is planned to be 38 meters long, 4.5 meters wide and 3 meters high with a 47-person capacity according to the project and supported by the Culture and Tourism Ministry and Mugla Governorship. The submarine's top speed will be 20 miles per hour and dive to a depth of 40 meters allowing tourists to experience Turkey's fascinating underwater life and archaeological treasures for 12 months of the year. The submarine is expected to cost around $1.3 million and would be built in Tuzla or Bodrum. The submarine is estimated to carry 50,000 tourists per year. 20 [[ Lufthansa-Turkish Airlines Cooperation Begins Turkey's Historical Heritage to be Displayed in 4 Countries APRIL’07 Lufthansa and Turkish Airlines announced that according to the cooperation agreement signed by two companies with the beginning of the "2007 summer schedule", the Istanbul-Frankfurt, Istanbul-Dusseldorf and Ankara-Frankfurt flights will be made jointly with Lufthansa and THY. Also fares will be adjusted reciprocally. This implementation will mean more flights, more target destinations and better connecting flights at the centers of Frankfurt, Munich, Istanbul and Ankara for the passengers of both airlines. Starting from September 1st 2007, the agreement initially will give THY passengers more flight destinations in North America (Atlanta, Boston, Dallas, Denver, Detroit, Houston, Los Angeles, Miami, Philadelphia, Portland, San Francisco, Washington, Charlotte) and in Far East, Middle East and Europe in later stages. With the agreement, THY will provide the Lufthansa passengers with 27 flight destinations in the Near East, Turkey and the Middle East including Bishkek, Karachi, Tashkent, Dushanbe, Damascus, Tabriz. 6th Boston Turkish Film and Music Festival The 6th Turkish Film and Music Festival was started in Boston and will end of May 13th. The festival started on March 29 with the showing of "Ice Cream, I Scream" by Yuksel Aksu. During the festival, leading Turkish director Zeki Demirkubuz will be presented with the "Excellence in Turkish Cinema Award" with his latest film "Destiny". Eleven films will be shown in the festival. These films are: "the Magician" by Cem Yilmaz, "Magic Carpet Ride" by Yilmaz Erdogan, "the Play" by Pelin Esmer, "Crash" by Umut Aral, "Destiny" by Zeki Demirkubuz, "Climates" by Nuri Bilge Ceylan, "Shattered Souls" by Mustafa Altioklar, "Killing the Shadow" by Ezel Akay, "My Father and My Son" by Cagan Irmak, and "Borrowed Bride" by Atif Yilmaz. Also, the exhibition "Glittering Gold: Illumination in Islamic Art" will be opened in the Museum of Fine Arts. Meanwhile, this year's festival program will include a series of lectures, exhibits and concerts under the theme "Mevlana and Sufism" as 2007 was declared by the UNESCO as the year of Mevlana, celebrating the 800th anniversary of his birth. Turkish Ministry of Culture and Tourism will introduce Turkey's rich history and cultural heritage in Japan, USA, Korea and Australia, with exhibitions on several themes such as Ottoman Empire, Turkish ceramics, Venice and Islam world and gladiators. An exhibition entitled "Venice and Islam World: 828-1797" will open in USA on March 6th and will remain open until July 8th. Life of the Ottoman Dynasty will be introduced with "Spectacular Ottoman Dynasty" exhibition in Japan in August 2007. Moreover, Turkish ceramics will be promoted in South Korea at an exhibition on April 28th. The exhibition titled "Where West and East Meet, Turkey-Crossroad of Ceramics" will be open till June 24th. The last exhibition of the year, with the theme of "gladiators", will open in Australia in October. Ongoing Exhibitions: On the other hand, Turkey's promotion continues with recently opened exhibitions in European cities. Turkish artifacts are on show in exhibition "Turkey: A History of 7,000 Years" opened in Italian capital of Rome, exhibition "12,000 Years Ago Anatolia: The Oldest Monuments of the Human Being" inaugurated in Germany and "Istanbul: City of the Sultans" opened in Dutch capital of Amsterdam.
APRIL’07 Dedeman Hotels to Promote Palandöken Ski Resort Dedeman Hotels group has speeded up promotion efforts for Turkey's eastern ski resort Palandoken, which is set to host 2011 World University Winter Games. Mehmet Varol, director general of the Dedeman Hotel in Palandoken, said the promotion campaign would focus on capturing the attention of tourists and will cover major cities of 16 countries including Spain, Britain, Germany, Japan, Greece, Italy, Russia and Azerbaijan. INCENTIVE MAGAZINE NEWS LINE TURKEY OTI Organizes “Sun Partners Antalya Tourism Festival” The Odeon Tourism International (OTI) Group will organize the “Sun Partners Antalya Tourism Festival” with the participation of 3000 tourism professionals from 21 countries. Ayhan Bektas, CEO of OTI Group organized a press conference to give news about what is new at OTI. Bektas started the conference with the good outlook they have received in Moscow's MITT exhibition. Bektas said that Odeon Tours of the group has welcomed 20% more guests to its stand compare to previous year. He said the OTI Group had increased its total turnover to $400 million and foreign currency inflow in Turkey to $250 million in 2006. Bektas announced that they would organize the “Sun Partners Antalya Tourism Festival” on May 15-16, 2007. During the festival the managers of travel agencies and tour operators will have opportunity to meet with accommodation and services providers in Turkey. Bektas stated that this year's event will be organized every year so that the promotion will contribute to the development of Turkish tourism. He said that Antalya's Kaleiçi region in particular would be promoted to the visitors of the festival. Nearly 2,500 tour operators and agency managers from Russia, Poland, Ukraine, Azerbaijani, Kazakhstan, Georgia, Rumania, Lithuania, Estonia, Moldova, Uzbekistan, Italy, Albania, Kosovo, Macedonia, Slovenia, Bulgaria, Iran and Germany and 300 representatives from Turkey are expected to join the festival. During the festival, Shaman Dance Group and Tarkan will give a concert at Kaleiçi.
