Trained by the master,Bart Cummings, the bold colt delivered Bart his fourth Cox Plate(Taj Rossi, Saintly, Dane Ripper) and owner Dato Tan Chin Nam hissecond (Saintly), the only owner in the race’s history to have twoindividual winners. Following his Tatts Cox Plate dominance in 2009,So You Think ran a gallant second in the Emirates Stakes a fortnightlater to All American. The impressive colt has not raced since and questions remain inregards to the horse’s eventual return, but it would be a brave personto write off the chance of a Bart Cummings charge and reigningCox Plate champ.SHOOT OUTThe John Wallace trained Shoot Out shone in the latest running ofthe Group 1 AJC Derby, winning in a canter, backing up his maidenGroup 1 win in the Randwick Guineas a month prior. Five horses inCox Plate history have won the AJC Derby, then the Cox Plate as afour-year-old including Phar Lap, Dulcify, Kingston Town, StrawberryRoad and Bonecrusher. Connections then intend to push on towardsthe Melbourne Cup. Again, only five horses have won the Cox Plate/Melbourne Cup double in the same year, including Makybe Diva,Saintly, Rising Fast, Phar Lap and Nightmarch. Clearly the son ofHigh Chaparral is well regarded. A $15,000 yearling, Shoot Out hasan exciting spring campaign on the horizon.TYPHOON TRACYTyphoon Tracy has come a long way since her maiden win underlights at Moonee Valley in September, 2008. The now five timeGroup 1 winner looks to have all before her, but the mare is yet towin past 1600 metres, which offers the first hurdle in claiming the2010 Tatts Cox Plate. A favourite of Australian racing, the PeterMoody trained galloper scored four consecutive Group 1 triumphs butfailed last start in the Doncaster over the mile trip. Her class cannotbe disputed, but is the 2040 metres beyond her? It is hard to countout a four time Group 1 winner at weight-for-age conditions.WHOBEGOTYOU & SHOCKINGLast year’s race favourite, Whobegotyou will be back again tochallenge for the Tatts Cox Plate title in 2010. The Mark Kavanaghtrained gelding is a two-time Group 1 winner with triumphs in theYalumba Stakes and Caulfield Guineas. The 2009 Group 2 Dato TanChin Nam Stakes winner has had an interrupted preparation sincehis sixth placing in last year’s Tatts Cox Plate. Having just two racestarts in 2010 over the unsuitable distances of 1350 and 1400 metres,>>>So You Think>>>

WhobegotyouShoot OutRAIHANAThe previously Dubai based Raihana raced a luckless secondbehind UAE Derby winner Musir at the 2010 Dubai World Cupmeeting. Both horses were transferred to the Sydney basedDavid Payne stable after their Dubai run, in preparation for anassault on Melbourne’s spring riches. Musir will miss the comingspring, but Raihana, winner of the UAE Oaks, may take the stablemantle and challenge for Cox Plate glory.Typhoon TracyWhobegotyouthe gelding has been gallant, both at Group 1 level. The best is stillto come for Whobegotyou, once he stretches out past the mile.Melbourne Cup winner Shocking will attempt to make the nextstep-up in grade and compete at Group 1 weight-for-age conditions. The burly entire is sure to be trained to the minute by the astuteMark Kavanagh. The winner will achieve thepinnacle of Australian racingZIPPING & LINTONThe lightly raced nine-year-old, Zipping will be back after his Tatts CoxPlate second placing in 2008, behind Maldivian and third placing lastyear behind the three-year-olds, So You Think and Manhattan Rain. TheLloyd Williams owned galloper has saluted the judge 14 times in his41 starts, with his last win the most significant of his career, the Group1 Australia Cup over 2000 metres at weight-for-age conditions. Hislast start victory was his maiden Group 1 win, and this grand galloperfollows the adage that, ‘things get better with age’. Watch for him late.Last season’s Top Cut Alister Clark winner, Linton produced a rousingfinal furlong to capture the Group 2 mile event at the Valley. Anotheryear older and stronger no doubt, the grey flash may be another oneout of the Williams’ camp to keep a watchful eye on.DARIANA, FAINT PERFUME & ROCK CLASSICAside from So You Think, Bart Cummings again looks to have a stronghand of Tatts Cox Plate contenders including Dariana, Faint Perfumeand Rock Classic. This brigade of recently turned four-year-olds are allGroup 1 winners, Dariana at 2400 metres and Faint Perfume at 2000metres and 2500 metres. Rock Classic’s Group 1 victory came at themile, but the gelding was nosed out in the Group 1 Rosehill Guineasover 2000 metres two starts back, signalling the 2040 metre journeyshould not be an issue.PREDATORY PRICERBy no means a forgotten galloper, the potential of Predatory Pricerwas never quite realised. Now trained by Mick Price, the son ofStreet Cry has the opportunity to reach the lofty heights oncepromised on the racetrack. A Group 2 winner at weight-for-ageover 1400 metres, the entire showed ability at the middle-distances,with a fourth placing in the Group 1 Queen Elizabeth, a thirdplacing in the Group 1 AJC Derby and a second to Efficient in ablanket finish in the Group 1 Turnbull Stakes. Predatory Pricer is yetto win past 1800 metres. As is the case everyyear, the Tatts Cox Platewill attract the premiumgallopers in Australasia.THESEO & MORE JOYOUSThe Tatts Cox Plate is one of the few major prizes missing fromGai Waterhouse’s trophy cabinet. Could 2010 be the year? Theseois one of the country’s toughest weight-for-age performers, winningthree Group 1’s at 2000 metres, including the Ranvet (twice) andthe MacKinnon Stakes. The Sydney based galloper has twice wonin Melbourne from 5 attempts in the Group 2 St George and theGroup 1 MacKinnon, along with a fifth placing in the 2008 Tatts CoxPlate. Waterhouse’s mare, More Joyous, may look towards the CoxPlate, boasting 6 wins from 9 starts including victory in the Group 1Flight Stakes, but is yet to win past the mile.METAL BENDER, PRESSDAY & TRIPLE HONOURChris Waller lost Rangirangdoo for the spring, but has three ablechances to challenge for the 2010 Tatts Cox Plate. As a three-yearold,Metal Bender won the Group 1 Randwick Guineas and theGroup 1 Rosehill Guineas double. More recently the $160,000yearling claimed the Group 1 Doomben Cup over 2020 metresand the Group 2 Hollindale, both at weight-for-age conditions.Pressday represents the first three-year-old to be considered, withthe colt to carry 49.5 kilograms if he was to gain a start. A winnerof 4 races from 6 starts, including the Group 1 TJ Smith over 1600metres, the son of Domesday is a rough chance, although he hasnot won past the mile. Waller’s third chance is the 2008 Doncasterwinner, Triple Honour, a last start winner of the Group 2 Eagle FarmCup over 2200 metres (first victory in two years), this warhorsewho can boast a Group 1 victory and recent winning form over2000 metres.LUEN YAT FOREVERThe Macau based Luen Yat Forever is an interesting internationalcontender, who recently created history to become the firstwinner of the Macau Triple Crown. A $32,000 weanlingpurchase at a Magic Millions sale in 2006, the son of Honours Listhas developed into an outstanding type, standing over 16 handshigh and weighing in at 550 kilograms. Prepared by Steven Choifor owner Tony Chan, Luen Yat Forever has yielded 12 wins and9 placings from his 23 race starts and amassed the equivalent of$A825,000 in prizemoney.ROTHESAYTrainer Gerald Ryan has an interesting contender in a sonof Fastnet Rock. Rothesay appears to relish the longer trips, contesting restricted races in 2009 with an honest fourth inthe Roman Consul. In 2010, the colt has shown great abilitywith victory in the Group 3 Lord Mayor and Group 2Queensland Guineas. As is the case every year, the Tatts Cox Plate will attract thepremium gallopers in Australasia. The winner will achieve thepinnacle of Australian racing and will be immortalised as achampion of the turf, in the 90th running of the Tatts Cox Plate,‘The Race Where Legends Are Made’.Faint PerfumePredatory PricerRock Classic16 ON TRACK MAGAZINE page 15

Shoot Outshoot OutBy Richard CallanderCox Plate bound galloperShoot Out is a perfect exampleof how a small outlay can keepa dream alive.Don’t worry that the just-turned four-year-oldhas already won an AJC Australian Derbyand a Randwick Guineas. The dreamis alive for Shoot Out to win the highlysought after Cox Plate in October.“He is an absolute star,” explains trainer, John Wallace.“Have a look at his record, that will show youthat much.”Shoot Out has only raced 13 times. With seven winsand two second placings he has already earned $1.56million in prizemoney. Not bad for a horse that cost owners Linda and GrahamHuddy a paltry $15,000.“Linda picked him out at the Magic Millions sales and Iwas lucky enough to be there at the same time and wasasked to train him,” said Wallace.“I wasn’t expecting to get the horse but when Lindapicked him out I was happy.”“When you look at what he’s done since then, yourealise how happy I am to have him.”Shoot Out is a son of stallion High Chaparral, whoproduced the 2009 Cox Plate winner So You Think, plusthe first three placegetters in this year’s AJC AustralianDerby as well as the winner of the Victoria Derby lastspring, AJC Australian Derby placegetter, Monaco Consul.“The stallion seems to be a good sire of stayers,” saidLinda Huddy.“He has a proven track record now and we have a horsefrom that progeny that should get right on with the job.”Shoot Out debuted with a runaway victory at the GoldCoast by more than five lengths. If that wasn’t impressiveenough, the gelding came out to win the QTC Sires’Produce Stakes at just his second start. While the margin was just over one length, the victorywas remembered as one of the most impressive in thehistory of one of the legs of the Queensland two-year-oldfeature race double.Shoot Out failed to win when resuming in the Gold EditionPlate at Doomben, before finishing a close second to GracefulAnna in the Vo Rogue Plate.“He had him perfectly positionedand when he asked for the effort heblitzed the rest of them.”He was then far from disgraced when just behind the placingsin the Magic Millions Trophy for three-year-olds at the GoldCoast when, according to Wallace, nothing went his way.“We went to Sydney after that and after a freshen-up hemanaged to win the Royal Sovereign Stakes over More ThanGreat,” Wallace said of a deceptive finish that appeared to haveMore Than Great the winner.“But after that we came out and ran second to Monton inthe Hobartville Stakes. It was a great run from a horse thatdoesn’t really relish racing at Rosehill.“We next went to Randwick and won the Guineas.“Then it was back to Rosehill for an unplaced Guineas run.We were quite happy with the run, it just wasn’t run tosuit him.”Next stop for Shoot Out was the AJC Australian Derby, withregular jockey Stathi Katsidis in the saddle.“He’s the best horse I have evertrained and I think he will provethat by the end of the SpringCarnival in Melbourne.”“Stathi knows the horse better than anyone and he rode him atreat in the Derby in Sydney,” said Wallace.“He had him perfectly positioned and when he asked for theeffort he blitzed the rest of them.”On the path to Cox Plate and Melbourne Cup, Shoot Out willrace exclusively in Melbourne this spring, with Katsidis stickingwith the staying prospect.Shoot Out has had two Melbourne starts already for two wins- the Bletchingly Stakes and the J.J. Liston Stakes.“He’ll progress through the weight-for-age races on the way tothe Cox Plate starting from the sprints” said Wallace.“The horse is versatile, he can win over any distance, but theextra trips will be what he’s set for this time in.”Wallace has campaigned in Melbourne in the major springraces before with talented stayer Oompala finishing third toJeune in the 1994 Melbourne Cup on the back of a placing inThe Metropolitan in Sydney.“Oompala was a great horse for me,” said Wallace. “He ran hisheart out in all the good staying races.”But when Wallace speaks of Shoot Out, you detect anotherpitch in his voice, an octave that suggests something specialmay be on the horizon.“He’s the best horse I have ever trained and I think he willprove that by the end of the Spring Carnival in Melbourne,”said Wallace.“He’s a superstar. You’ll see.”2829

Legendary Cox Plate WinnerTULLOCH 1960In 2010, we celebrate the remarkable career of racing legend,Tulloch, marking 50 years since his 1960 victory in the greatestAustralasian Weight For Age championship, the W.S. Cox Plate.Foaled1954 at Trelawney Stud,Cambridge, New ZealandBreedingSired by Khorassan (out ofFlorida by Salmagundi)Record53 starts, 36 wins,12 seconds, 4 thirdsEarnings£110,121Trained by the masterful Tommy Smith, who bought the small, sway-backed stallion for750 guineas in 1956, Tulloch was sold to E.A Haley, who admired the horse’s breeding andintelligence, and named him after the Scottish town from where his mother hailed.Despite his small stature, Tulloch showed remarkable strength, winning races at distances from5 furlongs (1,000m) to 2 miles (3,200m) and established records in the 1960 Cox Plate andthe 1957 Caulfield Cup.Dubbed ‘Haley’s Comet’ by the Australian press, 3-year-old Tulloch showed beginnings of achampion, winning 14 of his 15 starts and beating Phar Lap’s 28-year record by more than 2seconds in the AJC Derby. His 3-year-old record remains unmatched in Australian racing history.Tulloch was named favourite for the 1957 Melbourne Cup, but was scratched from the raceby Haley, who deemed the race too arduous for the diminutive horse. In 1958, Tulloch suffered a serious illness that kept him off the racing scene for nearly two yearsand almost resulted in his death. His unlikely but triumphant return to the track was as a 5year old in 1960.In what seemed an impossible challenge,Tulloch won the prestigious Cox Plate. It was the return of a champion in one of the toughest races in the world, and arguably thegreatest win in his impeccable career.Following his Cox Plate victory, Tulloch won the VRC Queen’s Plate, Chipping Norton Stakes,Craven Plate and the PJ O’Shea Stakes in the same season. After his return, Tulloch had arecord of 24:15-5-3 with 1 unplaced run,13 of these wins were at weight for age in stakes races.Tulloch served at Haley’s Te Koona Stud, siring two stakes winners, Dahma Star and Valide. He died at Old Gowang stud in 1969.In 2001, Tulloch was inducted into the Australian Racing Hall of Fame, alongside other turfimmortals Carbine, Phar Lap, Bernborough and Kingston Town. Throughout his career, Tulloch’senduring spirit showed strength and tenacity to become a true racing legend.Jockey George Moore salutes afteranother victory aboard Tulloch

TULLOCHOne of Australia’sAll-Time Greats“”ByPort wine and brandy. An old time cure for what ailed horse and man, nearly killed Tulloch, who, under any criteriaqualified for the title champion and more. The more comes into play because Tulloch was off thescene for nearly two years with a mystery illness, astrainer Tommy Smith and super-vet, Percy Sykes strivedtirelessly to save him.Tulloch was a shivering and shaking wreck, looking longodds about racing, let alone being the relentless stayingmachine of the 1960 Cox Plate at Moonee Valley,Max Presnelldowning Dhaulagiri, a tough and seasoned top classweight-for-age campaigner.“The horse is going to die,” Smith told Tulloch’s owner,E.A .Haley after the stallion was stricken at the start of hisfourth season.Haley had used his own vets on Tulloch against the adviceof the trainer to get Sykes. And Tulloch lost ground badly.“I won’t have any more to do with them,” Smith declared, according to “The Midas Man, TJ” by Kevin Perkins.” I wantSykes to treat the horse.”Many figure he couldn’t have reached his full potentialdue to the illness and break from competition but hiscomeback efforts hardly confirmed the view. The owner had no option. Tulloch had dehydrated badly.Sykes brought the condition under control using a tincture ofopium and Haley returned Tulloch to the family property atBathurst for recuperation.Part of the process was the bush remedy, port wine and brandy.Tulloch again started to scour and was sent back to Sykes. As a three-year-old, Tulloch won 12 of 14 starts, including hisrecord breaking 1957 Caulfield Cup, earning the best stayer ofhis age in “Australia’s All-Time Greats”.Many figure he couldn’t have reached his full potential dueto the illness and break from competition but his comebackefforts hardly confirmed the view.Tulloch won 15 races, coupled with eight in the first three andhis only unplaced effort being a four length seventh in the 1960Melbourne Cup under 10.1lb. (64kg.), put down more to piloterror by jockey Neville Sellwood rather than lack of horse power.50 years on, Tulloch’s unlikely victory in the 1960 Cox Plate isrecognised as one of the most remarkable stories in racing history.TJ Smith with Tulloch after winning the Queen Elizabeth

TULLOCHBy Dr Percy SykesMy association with Tulloch began when he wasbeing ‘broken in’ as a yearling by Terry Brosnan athis Randwick premises. From then on, histwo-year-old racing performance was spectacular, but froma veterinary viewpoint, uneventful. As a three-year-old, he won race after race, including thethree derbies and the Caulfield Cup. The controversy over hisscratching in the Melbourne Cup is history. His three-year-oldcareer stamped him as a champion and he became an idol.My recollection of the start of Tulloch’s illness was an earlymorning telephone call from T.J. Smith, telling me that thehorse was seriously unwell and scouring badly. When I arrivedat the stables, Tulloch was a very sick horse, depressed andsuffering from an acute febrile, watery diarrhoea which, initially was unresponsive to all medication.Over a period of time, whilst Tulloch’s attitude improved, his diarrhoea persisted with fluctuating periods of increasedintensity. It became possible, however, by alternating a varietyof anti-fungal, anti-protozoal or anti-bacterial drugs to obtainnormal droppings for two to three days at a time, beforereturning to diarrhoea.Tulloch proved his greatness and beatLord in a photo finish.A human preparation, often used for traveller’s diarrhoea, called Enterovioform, consistently stopped the diarrhoea fora couple of days, whereas the others had to be switchedaround to get a temporary effect. This led me to believethat the original Colitis had resultedin an imbalance of the normal bowelflora, allowing overgrowths of eitherProtozoa, such as Giardia, yeasts orfungi or Coliform Bacteria, dependingon the medication. With this in mind,Tulloch was sent out to Mr. Haley’sproperty to get him away from thestable environment and, with luck andtime, correct this imbalance.Unfortunately, this was not to be and he was returnedto Sydney and put into light work whilst controlling hisdiarrhoea with medication. By this stage we were desperateand willing to try anything to effect a permanent cure. One day, on a vague memory, I included a dye, Brilliant Green, among the sensitivity discs on a blood agar plate whencarrying out another faecal culture. Surprisingly, there was nogrowth whatsoever around the Brilliant Green and havingnothing to lose, I decided to find a way to get the dye downas far as the large bowel. This was accomplished by using oneounce gelatine capsules dipped in Formalin which keratinisedthe capsules and delayed the dissolving. It was a matter oftrial and error as, initially, the capsules came through intact, which meant that the capsule had been immersed for toolong. Eventually, we must have fluked the right length of timeso that the capsule dissolved in the large bowel, because, toour surprise, the droppings came back to normal and, whatwas even more surprising, remained normal. To this day, I still cannot believe that anything as simple asthat could perform, to all intents and purposes, a virtualmiracle. It was either that or an incredible coincidence. All Ican say is that month after frustrating month of trying to finda permanent cure, Tulloch was suddenly, overnight, a normalhorse and the reasons why were unimportant. From then, serious training commenced and Tulloch reallybegan to thrive. Serious throught was given to racing, theconcern was whether such a lengthy debilitating conditionhad taken a toll on his stamina and ability as one could neverassess Tulloch on his track work or even on jump-outs.Every attempt was made to avoid him competing againstLord and Dhaulagiri, but this proved impossible. Tullochended up running in the Queen’s Plate at Flemington againstas strong a field as could be found in racing. As it turned out, after a titanic struggle down the straight, Tulloch proved hisgreatness and beat Lord in a photo finish. The celebration that night was interrupted by a phonecall from the stables to say that Tulloch had scoured again, but fortunately, this turned out to be short-lived and wasobviously due to the stress of the race. Those two years had been an emotional roller coaster. Itwas hard to explain how a horse could become such anenormous part of a person’s life. Although one has to admitthat he was not quite the Tulloch of before, he was still achampion and the best horse in the country. The publicloved him, which even prompted one admirer to attempt topluck a hair from his tail on his way from the stalls into theenclosure at the 1960 Cox Plate. When interviewed by thepress in hospital he said, “You can quote me – I got a greatkick out of racing!”4041

THESEOTo win theTatts Cox PlateIt will be the second attempt for Sydney trainer,Gai Waterhouse and Star Thoroughbreds ownerDenise Martin to bring their Sydney champion,Theseo to Moonee Valley to win Australia’sweight-for-age championship, the 2010 Tatts Cox Plate.Theseo headed south to challenge for Tatts Cox Plate titlein 2008 as part of an extraordinary season, which saw thehorse secure the Epsom, the Mackinnon and the Ranvet allat Group 1 level and the Group 2 George Stakes.Theseo went into the Cox Plate that year as one of theearly favourites, however, things didn’t quite go his way asDenise Martin explains.“A couple of years ago, things didn’t work out in Theseo’sfavour. Maldivian lead from start to finish and Theseo overraced early and took some time before he was able tobalance up and let down.”The following year, Theseo was again Cox Plate bound, however a major foot injury grounded the Sydney galloperand required an extended spell. The journey began when Martin purchased the now 7year old gelding from the 2005 Magic Millions yearling salefor $120,000. She describes the lead-up and day that shepurchased Theseo, a son of the 5-time Group 1 winner,Danewin, out of the unraced mare, Ozone Sand (USA).“That year I discussed with Gai that for me to buy higherquality yearlings, I’d need to spend over a $100,000 perhorse. Before that time, I had a ceiling of $80,000.“Theseo was the second horse out in the ring and hewas a beautiful walking colt that possessed balance andpresence. SO YOU THINKYOU CAN DO IT AGAINby Caroline Searcyhis action, then he looked likely to be an effective galloper. AsBart said, “Just have a look at him, he would be hard to miss”.“Obviously we were taken by him. The late Viewed and SoYou Think were similar types as older horses. You just have toenvisage what they will become from the yearling stage.”“So You Think’s principle targetwill be to defend his Cox Plate.”The master trainer himself remembers the colt as having“good size, a deep girth and great rein.”In the lead up to the hectic sale, Cummings’ Karaka team, comprising vet Neil Walkton and Princes Farm managerSelena Phyllis, discuss the day’s yearling inspections, and makerecommendations to its loyal owners which horses theymight bid on.One of the most successful owners in Australian racing, DatoTan Chin Nam is already the winner of four Melbourne Cups, two Cox Plate wins, one Caulfield Cup, the Toorak Handicapwith Allez Wonder, the Wakeful Stakes, VRC Oaks doubleand Vinery Stud Stakes in Sydney. Dato’s Faint Perfume is afavourite for the upcoming Melbourne Cup.Dato was willing to part with $NZ110,000 for the HighChaparral colt, in partnership with the nephew of one ofThink Big’s owners, Tunku Ahmad Yahaya. After a win in the Gloaming Stakes in Sydney, the two yearold did plenty wrong in the Caulfield Guineas, but Bart knewbest. While skeptics challenged the idea of running sucha young, green colt in the country’s great weight for agechampionship, they should have known never to go againstthe master.Luck too was there in some shape. With a query over thenumbers entered for the race, and the fact he was not yeta group one winner, So You Think may not have even gaineda start in the Cox Plate. But he did and the rest becameanother chapter in the mighty annals of the Bart Cummings’book of training mastery. So what of the future of the colt, whose autumn setbackshave seen him furnish into a stronger, more mature, but stilllightly-raced “four” year-old this spring.Ramage explains, “So You Think’s principle target will be todefend his Cox Plate or “weight for age championship” title. He will have three or four lead up runs into the Cox Plate,to be determined by Bart, he had three as a three year-old,but now a more mature horse he may require one more run.The Yalumba two weeks before the Cox Plate is consideredthe best lead up for the older horses. Three year-old’s whorun in the Cox Plate, as So You Think did, tend to comethrough the Caulfield Guineas. He is likely to resume in eitherthe Liston or the Memsie, both 1400m weight-for-age racesin August.’Whatever the spring holds for this rising weight for age star, remember, if he joins recent back to back winners, Sunline,Northerly and three-time winner Kingston Town as multiplechampions of the great contest, this time he really WILL bea “three” year-old winner of the Cox Plate, with his thirdbirthday on November 10, another 18 days hence.Flashback to October 24, 2009.The accolades, the adulation and the joyon the faces of those who were the storybehind So You Think, the remarkable threeyear old winner of Australia’s championshiprace, the Tatts Cox Plate.Bart Cummings basked in the glory of outwitting his rivalsonce again and his “lucky,” loyal owner Dato Tan ChinNam also enjoyed his repeat success in one of Australia’sgreatest races.“Good size, a deep girthand great rein.”While luck plays a major role in all facets of horse racing, with this particular Cox Plate winner, luck took a back seatto the experience and knowledge of some of the keenestminds in the thoroughbred business, coming together toagain win the great weight for age championship.Among the many astute Australian raiders at the 2008Karaka yearling sale in New Zealand were one of the mostsuccessful teams in Australian racing, Bart Cummings andDuncan Ramage.Between them, they have followed a sales system thathas afforded them great success for many years. Exactingcriteria in seeking a certain type of yearling and findinga way into the famous Leilani Lodge training complexat Royal Randwick, with the very best heading to SaintlyLodge, bordering Flemington racecourse, to be preparedby Bart’s loyal right hand men Reg Fleming and Joe Agrestafor a tilt at the annual spring riches. So what was it about the colt that caught the eye of thiswell-travelled duo? Racing manager for Dato Tan ChinNam, Ramage remembers.“So You Think was a big, raw-boned scopy yearling-geometrically how we like to see them at his age - witha very easy action, evident even at the walk. If he filled hisframe from a November foaling (as he did) and maintained2009 Tatts Cox Plate Champion So You Think with Dato Tan Chin Nam’sRacing Manager Duncan Ramage and owner Dato Tan Chin Nam44

Returning in theautumn, Zarita achieved 4 consecutive Group wins including theGroup 2 Armanasco Stakes, the Group 2 Kewney Stakes, beforeGroup 1 wins in the Schweppes Oaks and then crushed the boysin the SA Derby. Now competing at the highest level, Zarita hit a run of outs, but still her runs were full of merit, including a fourth placing inthe 2008 W.S Cox Plate. Some 18 months passed before thePat Hyland-trained galloper tasted victory again in the Group 2Cleanevent Stocks Stakes over the mile at Moonee Valley in aphoto finish over Cats Whiskers.Zarita returned to the Valley in February 2010 and claimed theGroup 2 Sportingbet Sunline Stakes in a slashing run, justifyingher $1.95 favouritism with punters. Not only did this victorysecure another Group triumph, but the classy mare also claimedthe Dandy Kid Award, which recognises Moonee Valley’s Horseof the Year. Q&Awith Peter MoodyTrainer Peter Moody tells his tipsand tricks of the trade to On Track. What are some of your favourite horses you have trained?Typhoon Tracy & Black Caviar would be up high on the listbut our next winner will be our favourite! After winning the Moonee Valley and Victorian Trainer premiershipsin 2009/2010, what can we expect from the Moody stable this season? You can expect a solid challenge from a great group of trainers inVictoria for the next premiership. That said, we couldn’t be happierwith our team of 3 & 4 year-olds and also the anticipation of2 year-olds coming through. It’s been 50 years since Tulloch won the Cox Plate in 1960.What was it like working for legendary trainer T.J. Smith? It was a great learning experience, not only working for TJ but youlearnt just as much from the great old trainers/rivals that surroundedhim at the same time. You worked for Colin Hayes in your younger days. What were some of the differences between the training methods ofHayes and T.J.Smith?Hayes was a much more patient trainer and also character than TJ’srobust style with everything. Each to his own…If you were at a yearling sale, what would you be looking forin a horse?Product first, pedigree second. There’s more value this way. But thereare usually no rules, just opinion.Who do you regard (outside your stable) as the bestweight for age gallopers in the land?More Joyous looks a great talent and I think everyonewould love to see Whobegotyou in full flight! Come tothink of it, can big Ritchie C back it up this year???You won the Night Racing Premiership at the Valleycomfortably. Now with increased prizemoney and qualityof racing you must be a fan of the product? There are terrific opportunities for owners with such greatprizemoney, but you do need to target the right horses forthe Valley and also the night scenario,or have one good enough to overcome new things& adapt quickly. How’s Black Caviar coming along and what races areyou looking at for his spring campaign?Kicked off a long slow build up in mid July that willhopefully see her back racing in the sprint race at eitherCaulfield Cup or Cox Plate meet. Very pleased with herrehab so far.Peter MoodyWho was your first Group 1 winner and who was your first winner atMoonee Valley?Amalfi was my first Group 1 winner in the VRC Derby. Good sprinterStrategic Image was my first Valley winner. How important is it to have a first class team around you?“You are only as good as the team around you” is something I believein thoroughly. Can you give us an insight into Luke Nolen as a rider and a person?Very laid back which suits our stable, less over analysis as possible.Have your kids taken an interest in the horses or ponies? Buddingtrainers? They enjoy participating competitively at pony club & show jumpinglevel at this stage only. You’re a competitive person. How do you go competing with and isthere a rivalry with your training neighbour, Mick Price?Friendly rivalry only. He’s a great trainer who pushes me professionallywithout him even knowing he is…50How disappointing was the injury to Black Caviar onthe eve of the William Reid Stakes following her Australia Stakesdominance?Extremely disappointing, we held a biased view that she was the bestthree year-old female sprinter and was deserved of theGroup 1 win. What can we expect from Typhoon Tracy this season. Are youcomfortable with her getting the Tatts Cox Plate trip of 2040 metres? She is much stronger and will be trained for it, not going to get a betterchance as she will be a lightly raced five year-old mare at her peak. What young horses should we look out for this spring?Master Harry, Anacheeva, Willow Creek, CurtanaCan you give us a few words on the following horses and theircurrent preparation for the spring? The Group 3 Champagne Stakes and Group 3 Red Anchorwinner Avenue – Coming along well, not far off racing again and willhopefully find a race for her at the Valley in the spring as she doeslove it there.AMMI Vase winner, Hanks – He’s had a few feet issues following avirus in Sydney earlier in the year. He will only make a cameo late thisspring. This will align him for a solid autumn campaign. It’s frustrating,as the AAMI Vase is usually won by horses going somewhere and it’s ashame we still haven’t see the best of big “Tom” yet.Doubtful Jack – Got three races in mind early in spring, Bobby Lewis1200m Flem, Rupert Clarke 1400m Caul, & Toorak Hcp 1600m 9/10.Once these three out the way, we will know if we have a Cox Platehorse or not.Set For Fame – She’s had a big year of ups & downs, but keeps comingthrough. We’ll begin light work in August and the sprint on Cox PlateDay could also be a suitable option for her.Reward for Effort – We’re just going to give him a couple of lightweeks now following his terrific effort to win first up. We’re currentlylooking at a program that sees him run in the Manikato Stakes onGrand Final Eve after another race in September. Perhaps the MittysMcEwen Stakes, as we would love to see him have his lead up atthe Valley.Which 5 guests would you invite to a dinner party?Hitler, Stalin, Churchill, Roosevelt & Sir John Monash, seeing we won hisrace last week, god bless him!If they are not available: Robert Smerdon, Clinton McDonald, GrahamWoolston, Mick Price & Gerard Moloney. There would be some greatstorytelling but it could end up a bit like “The Usual Suspects”.If you won Powerball, would you turn up to work tomorrow?Yes as it would only make it a bit easier at the next yearling sales, that’s all.Who would you like to spend 3 minutes in the boxing ring with?Angelina Jolie.51

NOTICE MVRC ANNUALGENERAL MEETINGDear Member60 million litresof water saved in just one year!3OTH NOVEMBER, 2010The Annual General Meeting of Members of the Moonee Valley Racing Club will be held in the Committee Room,Level 4, Moonee Valley Racecourse on Tuesday 30 November 2010 at 12 noon. The business of the Annual General Meeting will include:1. Confirmation of the minutes of the last AGM, held 24 November 2009;2. Consideration of the accounts of the Club and the audit report for the year ended 31 July 2010;3. Election of committee members (if necessary);4. Election of auditors;5. Any general business; and6. Any special business of which notice has been given in accordance with Club rules. The following Committee Members retire in accordance with the Rules and are eligible for re-election:Mr R A Scarborough Mr M K Ralston Mr D H KobritzNominations for Committee close at 5.00pm on Friday 15 October 2009.Nomination forms may be obtained from the Chief Executive.MJ BrowellChief ExecutiveIn our last annual report, we advised Members that theClub had entered into a partnership with City West Waterto develop and implement “WaterMap”, a comprehensiveWater Management Plan for the racecourse.Part of that agreement was joint funding of a major enhancementto our stormwater harvesting activities and the enlargement ofour dam to hold the harvested water. Total project cost wasoriginally estimated at around $700,000, but during the projectwe were able to realise considerable savings, bringing the finalproject cost to approximately $375,000.We are extremely pleased to advise Members that sinceimplementing our Water Management program in August 2009,our potable (drinking) water consumption across the racecoursehas dropped by a staggering 70%. That’s 60 million litres of watersaved in just one year! Or enough water to fill 24 OlympicSwimming Pools. In dollar terms, the savings are around $140,000 in the first yearalone. Besides these economic benefits to the Club, the newstormwater harvesting system is reducing pollution dischargedinto Moonee Ponds Creek and reducing our greenhousefootprint dramatically. There is no doubt the majority of the savings have come fromenhancing our stormwater capture to irrigate the race track. However, we have also deployed many other water savingmethods across the racecourse complex. Our laundry has reduced water consumption by replacing themain washing machine with a machine that recycles the last rinsewater and reuses it as the first wash cycle water on the next load. This saves up to 20% of the Club’s washing machine water used.Toilets have been refurbished throughout the racecourse and arefitted with more efficient flushing mechanisms and in some cases, waterless systems. The gardeners have also played their part by designing andinstalling drought resistant gardens with stone, mulch and directdripper watering systems. At our race meeting on Saturday 24 July 2010, Members andother racegoers were offered the opportunity to save water attheir own homes by talking with City West Water experts. So it is a whole of Club approach that is resulting in thesemassive savings. Well done to all involved!Drinking Water SavedMVRC NYECELEBRATIONSMore announcementscoming soon!KILOLITRES18,00016,00014,00012,00010,0008,0006,0004,0002,0000AUGSEPOCTNOVDECJANFEBMARAPRMAYJUNJUL2005/062006/072007/082008/092009/10
