A word from the ChairmanChris Gibson OBEMarch 2010The Centre for Cross Border Studies enters itseleventh year in 2010 in good health. Its work ofpractical, common sense cooperation betweenNorthern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland is asrelevant as ever, whatever the temporary politicalvicissitudes at time of writing. The Taoiseach, BrianChris GibsonCowen, says as much in his interview in this journal.President Mary McAleese clearly agrees with him. Wewere honoured last September when the board, the staff and some key friendsof the Centre were invited to a 10th birthday reception in Aras an Uachtarainby the President who – along with her husband Dr Martin McAleese – has beenone of its strongest supporters. A year ago the fourth Journal of Cross BorderStudies in Ireland - featuring an interview on North-South cooperation withNorthern Ireland First Minister Peter Robinson – was launched in Dublin andBelfast by the Taoiseach and the Head of the Northern Ireland Civil Service,Bruce Robinson, respectively. We have come a long way since Andy Pollakand Mairead Hughes set up shop in two half-decorated rooms in the oldArmagh Infirmary building in September 1999.Despite the economic recession,financial cutbacks in Dublin andcontinuing problems with the DUP-Sinn Fein coalition in Belfast, thepast year has been another story ofnew developments and significantprogress in the areas of North-Southand cross-border research, informationand networking in which the Centrehas taken a lead. Four of the Ireland/Northern Ireland Cross-borderCooperation Observatory (INICCO)projects started in January 2009 with EUINTERREG IVA funding (managed by theSpecial EU Programmes Body) and arenow up and going strong: the Revivingthe Border Region Economy researchproject, led by Dr John Bradley, formerlyof the Economic and Social ResearchInstitute in Dublin, and Professor MichaelBest of the Universities of Cambridgeand Massachusetts (in partnership withInterTradeIreland); the Cross-borderSpatial Planning and Training Network(CroSPlaN), led by the Centre’s sisterorganisation, the International Centrefor Local Regional Development, and itsdirector John Driscoll; the Cross-BorderHospital Services research project, ledby the Centre’s new deputy director,JOURNAL OF CROSS BORDER STUDIES IN IRELAND No.55
