Diesel Mine LocomofiveDiesel Locomotives for undergroundwork have been used in Europe for anumber of years, but it remained for TheRuth Company of Denver, Colorado tobuild and introduce them into thiscountry. _ Their first installation was inthe Philippines where they have provento be a great success.Patterson-Ballagh Casing ProtectorThe principal item of manufacture ofthe Patterson-Ballagh Corporation of LosAngeles, California, is the rubber casingprotector marketed under the name ofthe "Patterson-Ballagh Casing Protector."This protector was introduced to the oilwell drilling industry 13 years ago byPatterson-Ballagh, and has now become astandard item of use in almost all rotarywells in the world, that are being drilledto any depth, over 4000 feet. It is offeredin some one hundred different sizes, tofit all sizes of drill pipe and aii diametersand weights of casing. The function ofthe casing protector is to furnish a wearingring on the drill pipe to take thewear against the inside of the casing,and stop the tool joints from contactingthe inside walls of the well. They aremade in larger and longer sizes, to stabilizethe drill pipe, and prevent whip, andincrease drilling speed.The Non-Explosive Mining MethodCARDOX is a non-explosive method ofdislodging coal at the working face, whichemploys the gentle heaving action of expandingcarbon dioxide to bring downthe coal. It operates without smoke,flame, or noxious fumes. CARDOX hasbeen approved as permissible for useunder gassy and dusty conditions by theU. S. Bureau of <strong>Mines</strong>.The CARDOX cartridge consists of ahollow tube forged of chrome-molybdenumthe paper portion of a twelve gauge shotgun shell, the inner surface of the wadbeing coated with a powder mixture andthe open end being provided with anelastic rubber cap. Fuses from the roundare cut square when trimmed and forcedthru the rubber cap which holds themfirmly against the bottom, A master fusefor lighting Is placed in the shell in thesame manner.This lighter is most advantageouslyused in places from which it is difficult toretreat, such as raises, stopes and workingsreached by ladders. V^ere there iswater dripping, Master Lighters protectthe ends of the fuses until they are spit.Short primers may be used with somesaving in fuse by using Master FuseLighters since the proper period to reachsafetj' is obtained by a master fuse ofsufficient length.The National Fuse & Powder Companyemploys H. Maxson has been appointedSales Manager and Chief Engineerof the Mining Machinery Divisionof Allis-Chalmers Manufacturing Company,according to an announcement justmade by Mr. Herman Schifflin, managerof the company's Crushing, Cement andMining Machinery Department.In design of the locomotive for undergroundservice it was necessary to completelydivorce it from the common sourceof trouble found in the industrial locomotive.Chain drives were eliminatedand side rods used which make it possibleto put uniform torque through allfour wheels without chatter, q"he wheelsare amply sprung, enabling them to followrough and crooked mine track. Thebest of alloys are used in all parts. Timkenbearings are used for journals andother principal bearings. To get maximumadhesion from every pound ofweight, steel tires are shrunk on cast ironcenters. Ruth,Ex-'21 is President of The Ruth Company.Led-Plate Thread and Gaslcet PasteThis product, made by the ArmiteLaboratories of Los Angeles, (H, C.Armington, '07) as the name implies, isa pipe thread dope containing metalliclead. It is made in two grades, the No,250 to hold water, steam, alkalies andacids and the No. 251 to hold oils, gasesand hydrocarbons.The use of Led-Plate provides a Compoundthat has "body" to fill the tiny voidsand in extreme temperatures wiil notvolatilize, carbonize or alloy with the contactingsurfaces. It is unaffected by gasesor liquids in the line. It will not disappearas do aluminum zinc and antimony; norcarbonize and "char" like organic Compounds.Led-Plate is excellent for all tight fits,for gaskets, threads and machine pressfits. It is a natural lubricant even afterthe vehicle has been driven off.Led-Plate remains in suspension in thecontainer and is always uniform. It willnot deteriorate with age or use and isunaffected by extremes of heat or cold. Itprevents galling and destructive seizureand is easily applied and can be spreadon thin or thick. It is most economical.Patterson-Ballagh Casing Protectorsare made in the rubber factory of thecorporation, where the complete cycle ofmanufacture takes place, from the cruderubber imported directly for that purposeto the finished article. They also manufacturethe other items that comprise theirline, being the Wire Line Guide, theSwivel Bumper, the Pipe Wiper, the MudGun, the Wire Line Wiper, and the SuckerRod Wiper. Armington, '07, is Chief Engineer.•V Cardox Method of Dislodging Coal,steel, capable of withstanding internalpressures up to 40,000 pounds per squareinch. Into one end of the cartridge isthreaded the charging cap, and into theother end is threaded the discharge cap.After a heater has been inserted, liquidcarbon dioxide is pumped through a valvein the charging cap. There are two electricterminals in this cap for connectingthe shot firing cables to an electric squibin the heater.. The discharge cap is equipped withangle ports through which the expandingcarbon dioxide is released at discharge.These ports are so constructed that theyhold the cartridge to the back of the drillhole, A soft steel shearing disc seals thecarbon dioxide in the cartridge until thepredetermined discharge pressure isreached.When current is applied to the terminalsin the charging cap, the electric squib setsoff the chemicals in the heater, andsufficient heat is generated to instantlygasify the carbon dioxide, increasing thepressure within the cartridge. As thegases in the cartridge reach the predetermineddischarge pressure, the shearingdisc gives way, and the gas is releasedthrough the ports.After the CARDOX cartridge has beendischarged, it is returned to the chargingplant and used over and over again.There are over 150 mines throughout theUnited States, Canada and England usingthis method of dislodging coal. John H.Bell, '30, is Vice President of CardoxCorporation, 307 North Michigan Avenue,Chicago, III,Radiant Tube Annealing CoversThe Lee Wilson Sales Corporation,Cleveland, Ohio, manufactures portableannealing covers that may be placed overcut length sheets or coiled sheets afterthey have been reduced by hot or coldrolling in charges of from 60 to 100 tons.The unique part of this equipment is theuse of radiant tubes for firing gas andthus giving a furnace equipment whichhas advantages of electric furnaces plusthe advantage of using gas, which, underprevailing rates may cut the cost per tonfor material heat treated about ^.These radiant tubes burn gas in such amanner that combustion continues throughoutthe length of the tube with an eventemperature along the tube. A spark plugigniter located at the exhaust end ofthe tube adds to the ease with which thefurnace may be lighted up after a shutdown.New equipment manufactured by thiscorporation is an electrostatic precipatorfor the cleaning of fuel gas.Employed by this company is Mr. C. Mr.Carpenter has spent some eight years inmining and metallurgy, eighteen yearswith the Westinghouse Electric and Mfg.Co., starting with the alloys and scraphouse reclaiming, followed by severalyears in the research laboratory and generalengineering department.Master Safety Fuse LighterThe National Fuse & Powder Company,Denver, Colo, announces the "MasterFuse Lighter" for lighting six fuses withone master fuse. The lighter consists ofHeiland Research Corporation,Denver, ColoradoEngaged in geophysical research, developmentand manufacture of geophysicalequipment, and geophysical consultingservice. Activities have been chieflyalong the lines of seismic and electricalprospecting. The company has perfecteda new type of oscillograph recorder withelectromagnetic damping which combineshigh sensitivity, high overload capacity,and good photographic reproduction withremarkable field worthiness. Seismicequipments range from truck mounted 12and 6 element recorders to small andportable 6 and 4 element outfits. A recentdevelopment is a portable 4 channel equipmentfor foundation, highway, etc., explorationwhich requires no storagebatteries and is daylight operating (seecut).• Heiland Geophysical Equipment.Electrical exploration equipment Includesthe resistance gradiometer suitablefor the detection of quartz veins, faults,etc., and an electromagnetic outfit for oreexploration which measures the in-phaseand quadrature components of electromagneticfields. Recently, a sensitivegravity meter, suitable for truck or tripodmounting and for direct or remote reading,has been developed. Heiland Researchhas manufactured, sold geophysicalequipment in the U. S., Canada, SouthAmerica, South Africa, Europe, Japan,and the Philippine Islands.
