41Mercedes-Benz unveils newgeneration engine rangeMercedes-Benz has unveiled a totally new generation of Mercedes-Benz medium-duty engines withthe series designation OM 93x. Export & Freight’s Helen Beggs travelled to Stuttgart to find out more.OM 470 EngineOM 936 Engineduty engines and suitable for adiverse range of applications”The medium-duty OM 934 andOM 936 engines, with four andsix cylinders and a displacementof 5.1 and 7.7 litres respectively, cover a power range from 115kW (156 hp) to 260 kW (354hp). In the long term, the twoengines will replace the engines ofthe 900 series launched in 1996,with a production volume to dateof almost one million units. The heavy-duty OM 470engine with six cylinders and adisplacement of 10.7 litres spansthe power range from 240 kW(326 hp) to 315 kW (428 hp).It follows the OM 471 witha displacement of 12.8 litreswhich was presented last year.“How and where will we putour new engines on the road? And which market have weselected for the launch? TheOM 470 is particularly wellsuited for weight-sensitive trucksand buses, and because of itscompact dimensions it is also theright engine for areas with littleinstallation room. The enginewill be used in trucks as well asin intercity buses and coaches,”explained Stefan Buchner.“Trucks and buses will also bethe key areas of application forthe 93x engine series, becauseit is tailored for light and heavydutyshort-range distributionand long-distance haulageoperations as well as for offhighwayuses. Besides the normalapplications, there is also aspecially developed six-cylindervariant designed for horizontalinstallation in city buses.“We also believe thatconstruction, industrial andagricultural applications arean important market — theengines here satisfy TIER IV,the latest emissions level.”Installation in other brands andmodels of Daimler Trucks onother continents is planned indue course. It is also planned touse the cutting-edge four- andsix-cylinder engines in off-highwayapplications as industrial engines.Series production of the urbanbus variants at the Mannheimengine plant will start shortly.Together with the equallynew heavy-duty OM470 engine, Daimler isexpanding its “BlueEfficiencyPower” engine portfoliointo a comprehensive rangecomplying with the impendingEuro VI emissions standard.“The new engines set newbenchmarks in their class. They have been designed inuncompromising manner forenvironmental friendliness, economy and performance,”noted Georg Weiberg, Headof Truck Product EngineeringDaimler Trucks, at thepresentation of the engines. For the first time ever in an engineseries for commercial vehicles, all the engines comply with thefuture Euro VI emissions standard.Euro VI will be mandatoryin the EU from 2013/14.“As such, Mercedes-Benzis once again assuming thepioneering role in environmentalprotection,” Georg Weibergadded, emphasing that thiswas particularly important forthe OM 93x, as medium-dutyengines are deployed primarilyin trucks and buses which areused in conurbations, wherereductions in emissions directlybenefit the local population. At the same time, the newmedium-duty engines areextremely economical thanksto their long service lives, lowconsumption of fuel, AdBlue andengine oil and long maintenanceintervals. Cutting-edge enginetechnology assures the OM 93xseries of spontaneous accelerationand impressive power delivery. One of the technical highlightsis the variable valve timing, which features for the firsttime in a diesel engine.“The New Engine Generationmakes Mercedes-Benz theonly manufacturer to offer acomprehensive range of cleanand efficient Euro VI-compliantengines in all power classes. The new engines are light andcompact as well as powerful. OurOM 936H Enginemedium-duty engines have theruggedness, the performance, and the muscle of the heavy-dutyunits. The OM 470 is equippedwith a unique fuel injectionsystem and the new 900 serieshas an unparalleled adjustablecamshaft,” said Georg Weiberg. And added Stefan Buchner,Head of Global Powertrain,Procurement and ManufacturingEngineering Daimler Trucks:“We have invested around €500million in development of the newMercedes-Benz OM 934 and OM936 engines and their productionfacilities at the Mannheim plant. This commitment has paidoff: the new OM93x series isa milestone among medium-Lightweights.indd 41 19/03/2012 16:48
