VANIRELANDOff roadAs we found out atDonington, an all-newcompact front differential, newupgraded rear axle and loweroverall ratios, all contributeto Ranger’s superior off-roadcapability, which begins with arobust electronically controlledtransfer case – for both manualand automatic transmissions– allowing you to shift on thefly from 4x2 to 4x4 high anytime via a knob convenientlylocated on the centre console.Low-range gearing in 4x4models can be enabled forextra-low-speed torque oradditional downhill braking. When the low-range gearsare engaged, the throttleresponse is changed toan off-road setting whichprovides a less sensitive, softer pedal feel. This preventsunintentional accelerationdue to the bouncing motionof the driver’s foot whilemoving over bumpy ground. The logic control also changesthe shift points for theautomatic transmission.Active SafetyNew to Ranger is the ESPactive safety system thatimproves driver control underall conditions and maximisesvehicle traction and stabilityboth on- and off-road. ItWhile the ESP system is bydefault fully active whenthe vehicle is started, youcan choose to leave it on,partially on, or off dependingon the road conditions. In 4WD high-range mode, the Stability Control can bedeactivated while maintainingthe brake interventiontraction control. This settingis most suitable when drivingin deep sand or on muddysurfaces where engine torquereductions from the ESP canlimit mobility. In 4x2 vehicles, you can select the all-offmode when wheel spin inneeded to power throughdeep snow, sand or mud.For those who need to towa trailer, Ranger offers aTrailer Sway Control featurethat mitigates the problemof “snaking”, which canbe caused by side winds, track ruts, sudden steeringmovements, or incorrectlyladen trailer. When trailersway occurs, the systemdetects the effect on thetowing vehicle and operatesto reduce the train speed byreducing engine torque andgradually increasing brakepressure on all wheels untilthe trailer sway stops.Ranger also comes equippedwith an Adaptive Load Controlfeature that adjusts thestability control dependingon the load. It can tellwhether the pickup is ladenor not based on the speed ofacceleration and will adjustthe ESP control settingsaccordingly. This will preventinterventions from happeningtoo early where they areunwanted or too late wherethere would be too muchoversteer or understeer.Ranger also offers a Roll-OverMitigation safety feature thatclosely monitors the pickup’sspeed, lateral acceleration, yaw motion and steeringangle, and will identifypotentially dangerous drivingconditions that would leadto an untripped roll-oversituation. Well before thesituation becomes critical, the feature will cause theESP system to interveneand control the vehiclespeed to restore stability. To further maximise tractionat each driven wheel,Ranger comes with theTraction Control Systemwhich can prevent wheelspin proactively by preciselycontrolling engine torque toeach wheel and by braking aspinning wheel completely.Powerful EnginesPowerful new powertrainsare at the heart of the allnewFord Ranger, giving itmore than enough muscleand backbone to get the jobdone: a 2.2 litre DuratorqTDCi four-cylinder dieselengine with peak torqueoutput of 375Nm and poweroutput of 150PS or a 3.2 litreDuratorq TDCi five-cylinderdiesel engine with a stumppullingtorque of 470Nmand power rated at 200PS.All the engines have alsobeen calibrated to meet themost stringent emissionstandards worldwide, including Euro Stage V.Available for the first timewill be the six-speed manual, and, in selected Rangerdiesel models, a six-speedautomatic transmission toprovide reduced engine rpmand extended operationalrange on long highwaytrips or in city traffic.Numerous refinements havealso been achieved withthe new diesel engines, including the implementationof the latest in fuel deliverytechnology, with a new highpressurefuel system carefullytailored and calibrated forcombustion efficiency. Itdelivers exceptional fueleconomy ratings withoutaffecting power levels. Theprecise injection timing andcalibration also ensures asmooth combustion processto avoid a hard dieselcombustion crackle, resultingin lower noise emissionsmore like a petrol engine.Five StarsIncidentally, the all-new FordRanger has made motoringhistory by becoming thefirst ever pick-up to achievea maximum 5 Star ratingunder the Euro NCAPcrash test protocol.Ranger scored 89 per centfor overall safety – the bestscore ever earned by a pickupand one of the highestscores recorded by EuroNCAP for any type of vehicle. Moreover, the new Rangerachieved the highest ratingof any vehicle ever testedby Euro NCAP for pedestrianprotection (81 per cent).Interior of thenew Ford Rangeruses advanced sensors tocontinuously monitor the paththe vehicle is travelling on andcompares it to the path youwant to follow, as indicatedby the steering wheel. When you select 4WD highrange, the ESP control of theengine and brakes is adjustedto provide improved stabilitywithout any unnecessaryinterventions triggeredby rough or bumpy roadsurfaces. The ESP system isdisabled when 4WD lowrangeis engaged to provideyou with full commandof the engine torque.77VI Ford Ranger Test Spread.indd 77 20/03/2012 09:44
