98 _______________________________ FUNDAMENTAL WIDE AREA NETWORKING CONCEPTSinterface. Due to the preceding limitations, the ITU de®ned an alternate interfacefor public data network access known as X.21 bis, where bis is the Latin term forsecondary.X.21 bisThe X.21 bis recommendation is both physically and functionally equivalent to theV.24 standard, which is compatible with RS-232. The X.21 bis recommendation isdesigned as an interim interface for X.25 network access and will gradually bereplaced by the X.21 standard as more equipment is manufactured to meet theX.21 speci®cation. The X.21 bis connector is the common DB25 connector usedby RS-232 and V.24. The connector pins for X.21 bis are de®ned in an ISOspeci®cation called DIS 2110.RS-530Like RS-232,RS-530 uses the near-universal 25-pin D-shaped interfaceconnector. Although this standard is intended to replace RS-449,both RS-422and RS-423 standards specify the electrical characteristics of the interface and willcontinue in existence. These standards are referenced by the RS-530 standard.Similar to RS-449,RS-530 provides equipment meeting this speci®cation withthe ability to transmit at data rates above the RS-232 limit of 19.2 kbps. This isaccomplished by the standard originally specifying the utilization of balancedsignals in place of several secondary signals and the Ring Indicator signal includedin RS-232. As previously mentioned in our discussion of differential signaling, thisbalanced signaling technique is accomplished by using two wires with oppositepolarities for each signal to minimize distortion. The RS-530 speci®cation was ®rst outlined in March 1987 and was of®ciallyreleased in April 1988. A revision known as RS-530-A was approved in May 1992.By supporting data rates up to 2 Mbps and using the standard `D' type 25-pinconnector,RS-530 offers the potential to achieve a high level of adoption duringthe 1990s. One signi®cant change resulting from Revision A is the speci®cation ofan alternative 26-position interface connector Alt A) which is the same optionalconnector as speci®ed in Revision E to RS-232. Another signi®cant changeresulting from Revision A was the addition of support for Ring Indicator whichenables the interface to support switched network applications.Figure 1.53 summarizes the RS-530 interchange circuits and compares thosecircuits to both RS-232 and RS-449. Note that RS-530 has maintained thestandard RS-232 circuit structure for data, clock and control, all of which arebalanced signals based upon the RS-442 standard. RS-530 has also adopted thethree test circuits speci®ed in RS-232-D: local loop, remote loop and test mode.Like RS-232-D,these three circuits are single ended. RS-530 has maintained pin 1as frame ground or shield and pin 7 as signal ground. The original RS-530 interface speci®ed balanced circuits for DCE Ready andDTE ready, using pins 22 and 23 for one pair of each signal, respectively.
