7.2 DATA COMPRESSION PERFORMING DEVICES ____________________________________ 765Using compression-performing DSUs to enhance router-to-router commu-Figure7.23nicationscost under $1000 per unit, the ability to eliminate the need for a more expensivetransmission facility allows a compression DSU to pay for itself in a short period oftime.Multifunctional compressionOne of the more popular uses of compression performing devices is to reduce thequantity of data to be multiplexed, increasing the servicing capacity of themultiplexer. A natural evolution of the development of compression devices was toinclude both statistical multiplexing and data compression in one hardware device.One product representing this multifunctional capability is the Racal-VadicScotsman III.Scotsman IIIThe Racal-Vadic Scotsman III is a stand-alone compression device that can becon®gured in a variety of ways to include the addition of an optional four-channelmultiplexer. Figure 7.24 should be compared to the employment of a statisticalmultiplexer. Since some statistical multiplexers do not perform data compression,signi®cant time delays would occur in attempting to multiplex four 9600 bpsbisynchronous data sources onto one 9600 bps transmission line. In other situations,statistical multiplexers may service bisynchronous data through the use ofbandpass channels. When this occurs, only asynchronous data is actuallystatistically multiplexed, while bisynchronous data is time division multiplexedonto a prede®ned time slot on the composite multiplexed link as illustrated inFigure 7.25. When bisynchronous data is multiplexed via a bandpass channel, thedata rate of the bisynchronous input data reduces the portion of the compositechannel's bandwidth available for multiplexing other data sources. As an example,one bisynchronous data source operating at 4800 bps would reduce the bandwidthof the composite channel for multiplexing other data sources by 4800 bps when thebisynchronous data is multiplexed via a bandpass channel. Thus, if the compositechannel operates at 9600 bps, only 4800 bps would be available for the statisticalmultiplexing of other data sources.Due to the limitations of servicing bisynchronous data with bandpass channels,most statistical multiplexers using this technique are limited to supporting only one
