We hope this publication captures the essence of the most important parts ofwhat we do each day, and communicates it to you with clarity and thoroughness. It was a special year for many reasons, but certainly one of the highlights was thecommencement of our Scholarship Programme which resulted in our first scholarshipstudent attending UNIS Hanoi for the 2012-2013 school year in Grade 10. The year also sawus complete our new Sports Centre and Centre for the Arts, accomplishments which helpedto support our first full year of participation in the Asia Pacific Activities Conference. Andwhile our IB Diploma results continued to track significantly above the world averages, wealso had one of our Grade 12 students achieve the first perfect score of 45 points. She wasone of approximately125 students to score a perfect 45 out of the 50,000+ who take the IBDiploma exams each year.We are a school committed to continuous improvement on the road “From Good toGreat”, and it is reaffirming to read through these pages and feel proud of all that we haveaccomplished while also seeing areas where we can still get better. Curriculum Review at UNIS HanoiOne of the major recommendations from UNIS Hanoi’s 10 yearreaccreditation by CIS/WASC was for the school to establish astandards-based curriculum in all subject areas and to furtherarticulate the curriculum across the whole school.A new position of Curriculum and Professional DevelopmentCoordinator was created in 2010-11 with the responsibilityto oversee and support the development of a coherentand articulated curriculum from Discovery to Grade 12.A formal curriculum review cycle has been establishedand Curriculum Review Teams began the process in2011-12, which involves clearly documenting andarticulating standards and learning outcomes (including skillsand understanding) in each subject through each grade level. The written documentation will be done via an onlinecurriculum mapping tool so that scope and sequencedevelopment can be easily tracked and gaps andredundancies can be noted and addressed. Outside ofthis formal review cycle, ongoing curriculum review isencouraged and supported at individual grade/departmentlevels in order to ensure that learning is relevant, engagingand aligned with 21st century learning. For more information about the report contact Director ofLearning, Meagan Enticknap-Smith: dol@unishanoi.orgDigital CitizenshipIn 2011-12 UNIS Hanoi invited a renowned leader in the fieldto come and work with students, faculty, parents and BoardMembers towards developing Digital Citizenship with ourstudents.Robyn Treyvaud, an educational leader and online safetyeducator working with schools and communities across theAsia Pacific region, came to UNIS Hanoi during our DigitalCitizenship Week in October 2011.Building on the work by the Tech Team and Counselors, RobinTreyvaud reinforced the message that Digital Citizenship issimply good citizenship in another ‘virtual’ terrain. Her goal is to help protect and educate the world’s firstgeneration of kids to ‘grow up digital’ in an environmentwhere computers, the internet, video games and mobilephones are ubiquitous. Students across the school workedwith Robyn on what it means to be a responsible digitalcitizen, and digital safety issue, (including cyber-bullying,risks, security, ethics and addiction). As a result of her visit the School has adopted an i-safeprogramme to dovetail with our curriculum. For more information please contact Director of Technology,Ed Gilbreath: techdirector@unishanoi.orgLearning Support AuditUNIS Hanoi is committed to inclusion and building structures tosupport a wider range of student learning styles and needs.Head of School, Chip Barder said: “As a school embodying theUN values, principles and beliefs it is essential that we be at theforefront of inclusion practices to whatever extent we can.”In 2010-11 UNIS Hanoi joined with a group of schools alldedicated to the same goal of inclusivity, and key Schooladministrators attended “The Next Frontier Inclusion” at theInternational School of Brussels. In 2011-12 an additional two Learning Support positions wereadded to the faculty (one each in Elementary and Middle/High School), and the founders of the Next Frontier Inclusiongroup and experts in the field in international schools, Billand Ochan Kusama-Powell, came to UNIS Hanoi to audit ourcurrent Learning Support programme. The Powells spent three days at school with the LearningSupport teams, students, parents and wider faculty membersand the Board of Directors. International Schools Assessment (ISA)UNIS Hanoi has been using the ISA programme for sevenyears as one way to measure student learning throughstandardised testing. The ISA programme is designed especially for students ininternational schools in Grades 3 to 10. It is based on theinternationally endorsed reading and mathematical literacyframeworks of the OECD’s Programme for InternationalStudent Assessment (PISA). It is used by schools with aninternational focus whose language of instruction is English.Over 58,000 students from 298 schools in nearly 80 countriesparticipated in ISA 2011-12. Approximately 60% of thoseparticipating in 2011-12 were non-native English speakers.Because the ISA is designed for students experiencing manydifferent curricula, the assessment is geared to the skillsand understandings that research suggests underpin majorcurricula throughout the world. The frameworks for readingand mathematical literacy are based on those used for theOECD’s Programme for International Student Assessment(PISA) which has been developed and endorsed by all OECDcountries and is currently used by 65 countries to measureand compare student performance across countries.ISA Writing A Results 2008-11 ISA Math Results 2008-11UNIS 2008700UNIS 2009600UNIS 2010500800UNIS 2011600400All Other 20114003002002000800UNIS 2008100 600800UNIS 2008UNIS 20090 400600Gr3 200UNIS 2008UNIS 2009UNIS 2010400Gr4 Gr5 Gr6 Gr7 Gr8 Gr90200UNIS 2008UNIS 2009UNIS 2010UNIS 20110Gr3 Gr4 Gr5 Gr6 Gr7 Gr8 Gr9UNIS 2008 UNIS 2009UNIS 2010UNIS 2011All Other Schools 2011Gr3 Gr4 Gr5 Gr6 Gr7 Gr8 Gr9UNIS 2009 UNIS 2010UNIS 2011All Other Schools 2011Gr3 Gr4 Gr5 Gr6 Gr7 Gr8 Gr9UNIS 2010 UNIS 2011All Other Schools 2011Gr6 Gr7 Gr8 Gr9UNIS 2011 All Other Schools 2011Gr9All Other Schools 20117006005004003002001000Gr3 Gr4 Gr5 Gr6 Gr7 Gr8 Gr9ISA Math Results 2008-11 ISA Reading Results 2008-11Gr3 Gr4 Gr5 Gr6 Gr7 Gr8 Gr9UNIS 2008UNIS 2009UNIS 2010UNIS 2011All Other 20116005004003002001000Gr3 Gr4 Gr5 Gr6 Gr7 Gr8 Gr9UNIS 2008UNIS 2009UNIS 2010UNIS 2011All Other Schools 2011UNIS 2008UNIS 2009UNIS 2010UNIS 2011All Other 2011ISAAssessments for ISA can be made in October or FebruaryUNIS Hanoi students sat their tests in February in 2011Every student in Grades 3-9 completes four assessmentsMath tests assess:- Quantity (number and measurements)- Shape and space (geometry)- Uncertainty (estimation and data probability)- Change and relationship (algebra)Reading tests assess retrieval of information, interpretation, reflection and evaluationTwo writing genres are assessed: Narrative (A) and Expository/Argument (B)Both writing tests assess content, spelling and vocabularycompetenciesThe figures represented are the mean of UNIS Hanoi studentsfor each year“All other schools” is the mean from all students assessedworld widePISA data is collected on a three year cycle. 2009 is the latestdata and compares scores only for 15-year-olds(ESB) English Speaking Background student results are shownwith All Students results opposite10UNIS Hanoi Annual Report 2011-2012

MAP Test ResultsAt UNIS Hanoi students from Grade 2 to Grade 7 participatein the Measures of Academic Progress (MAP) tests. This testis provided by the Northwest Evaluation Association (NWEA)and used by a variety of international schools. UNIS Hanoiholds the MAP test in the first and third quarters of eachacademic year. The test provides additional data on studentachievement in order to support our understanding ofindividual student learning and the quality of our educationalprogramme. UNIS Hanoi first began piloting the MAP testin 2008. Since 2011-12 UNIS Hanoi exited the pilot phaseand began analyzing and utilizing test scores. UNIS Hanoistudents do the Mathematics, Reading and Language Usageportion of the MAP test.based upon the actual performance of pupils of a specifiedgrade level who have previously taken the test. The MAP test uses an RIT Scale to look at student achievement. The RIT Scale is based on a Rasch Unit, honoring GeorgeRasch, the Danish mathematician who developed theunderlying theory for this type of measurement. The RIT Scaleis a curriculum scale that places individual difficulty valueson questions that students answer and uses those values toestimate student achievement. The RIT Scale has the samemeaning regardless of grade level and by using the RIT scale,we can look at student growth and where the projectedgrowth is for each individual student.Fall FallSpring SpringThe MAP test is a normed test - norms represent averageor typical performance and the statistics supply a frameUNISof reference for test scores. MRISA – Arts, Leadership and SportThe Mekong River International Schools Association (MRISA)was founded in 1998 to allow international schools in Vietnam,Cambodia, Laos, and most recently Thailand to meet for aleadership conference, sporting events and an arts festival. The sports tournaments allow students from differentschools around the region to come together and make newfriends as well as compete in different team activities. Sixsports tournaments are held during each school year, threefor Middle School (Grades 6-8) and three for High School(Grades 9-12) at different schools within the region. Thesports involved are basketball, soccer, and volleyball. The MRISA Arts Festival and Leadership Conference takeplace once a year and also alternate between schools. Theyboth involve students in Grades 6-12. In order for UNISHanoi to fulfill its commitment to both MRISA and APAC atthe same time, it meant that double the amount of teams andcoaches needed to be involved in the Sports Programme. Thisrequired a sizable expansion in the programme. The coachesand students didn’t let the school down. The addition of thenew indoor Sports Centre was definitely a contributing factor.UNIS Hanoi not only attended every event, we also sentadditional teams to both the Junior Basketball and Volleyballtournaments. The MRISA Arts Festival, hosted on our campus, involved 50 UNIS Hanoi students and was a huge success. Allin all, the year was very successful in terms of participationnumbers and our level of involvement in MRISA activities.16UNIS Hanoi Annual Report 2011-2012

Student LeadershipAt UNIS Hanoi we believe that students are not only at schoolto learn – but also to teach and to lead. The five year strategic plan has three objectives under itssecond co-curricular goal, and one of them is dedicated todeveloping leaders. Objective 2.2 - Students demonstrate: a) responsibleleadership; b) respect for cultural and other differences; andc) the ability to collaborate and work as a team.Student voice is sought at UNIS Hanoi on a wide range ofissues and in the development of plans, but the goal is formuch more than student voice to be heard – we aim toempower students with leadership roles within the Schooland a host of opportunities have been developed to assistour students in achieving this goal.In addition to the Senate and Student Councils which involvestudents from Grade 3 upwards, our Student AmbassadorProgramme in Middle and High School and their ElementarySchool Peer Helper counterparts took on an increasinglyimportant role in 2011-12 from the Orientation of new studentsthrough to the end of the year.Students were also involved in the Board of Directors2011-12 Campus Visioning project (see p.20) and the Board ofDirectors was delighted to invite members from the StudentCouncils to join their May meeting and hear reports of theiryear-long activities. In 2011-12 for the first time, Forensics (public speaking anddebate) was offered in both Middle School and High School, with a goal to attend future Asia Pacific Activities Conferenceevents. In addition, participation continued with a delegationof six students from UNIS Hanoi at the EARCOS GlobalIssues Network (GIN) conference which took place at theInternational School Manila, in February with the theme of‘Compassionate Action’.GIN is a student-led organization that empowers youngpeople to collaborate locally, regionally and internationally inorder to create sustainable solutions for global issues. As a United Nations Interntaional School, a highlight of eachyear is our own Model United Nations’ conference as well asour students participation in THIMUN, Singapore (The HagueInternational MUN).Our own hosted conference was the largest yet with recordattendance from local Hanoi schools as well as those fromfurther afield. It was also one of the first main events to beheld in the new Centre for the Arts. This event was a training conference for the main event ofthe MUN year – THIMUN in Singapore – which this year wasattended by a delegation of 16 students representing twofull UN member countries for the first time. For some of thedelegation it was a first opportunity to see the workings ofthe Model United Nations at first hand and for one of ourstudents, Maxwell Ryder (Grade 12) the honour to chair oneof the General Assembly meetings. As the students themselves remarked, this was a greattestament to the way our students are developing as leadersof tomorrow.www.unishanoi.org 17

Service LearningThe Service Learning Programme at UNIS Hanoi is centralto our Mission and Guiding Principles and is firmlyembedded in both Curricular and Co-Curricular activitiesfrom Elementary through to High School. Service Learningintegrates meaningful community service with instructionand reflection to enrich the learning experience, teachcivic responsibility, and strengthen communities.
