Reel YouthReel Youth is a not-for-pr<strong>of</strong>it, media empowermentprogramme supporting youth, adults, organisations andbusinesses to create and distribute engaging films about theissues they care about most.These components and the lessons learned from ‘Reel Youth’have become central to the organisation and development<strong>of</strong> Service Learning Programmes at UNIS Hanoi.In September <strong>2011</strong>, sixteen students from UNIS Hanoi wereselected for a 5-week workshop with the action group ReelYouth. Their brief was to explore the <strong>United</strong> <strong>Nations</strong> theme‘Rapprochement <strong>of</strong> Cultures’ through the creation <strong>of</strong> filmdocumentaries focusing on two <strong>of</strong> the current Service projectsat UNIS Hanoi: ‘Thuy An Orphanage’ and ‘Helping Hands’. Inthe gala premiere, held to showcase these documentaries andshare what they had learned, the students talked about theproject as one <strong>of</strong> the most meaningful learning experiencesthey had ever taken part in.The key components <strong>of</strong> the ‘Reel Youth’ programmeincluded:building strong connections between UNIS Hanoistudents and people in the broader communitydeveloping strong connections between students,teacher-supervisors and partner organisationsa focus on reflection, evaluation <strong>of</strong> group goals, and thepresentation and celebration <strong>of</strong> learningdeveloping specific skills through the programme (e.g.film creation, communication, organizational, and selfmanagementskills).www.unishanoi.org 19
