A. A Faster Push for Achiev<strong>in</strong>g the MDGsAround the world, UN country teams worktogether to help nations to advance theirdevelopment priorities. Through strategiccoord<strong>in</strong>ation, UN country teams determ<strong>in</strong>e howtheir comb<strong>in</strong>ed efforts can best assist <strong>in</strong> deliver<strong>in</strong>ghigh-impact, long-last<strong>in</strong>g development results.They def<strong>in</strong>e arenas <strong>in</strong> which they can be mosteffective, and what k<strong>in</strong>ds of global programmeand policy expertise can be of the greatestvalue to national partners.A top priority for all UN development work hasbeen the MDGs and <strong>in</strong>ternationally agreeddevelopment goals. A 2012 UN survey 1 ofGovernments found wide agreement that theMDGs have been successfully <strong>in</strong>tegrated acrossjo<strong>in</strong>t programm<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong>struments, such as theUNDAFs, that guide country programm<strong>in</strong>g.Significant progress has been made towardsachiev<strong>in</strong>g the MDGs. Global targets on halv<strong>in</strong>gextreme poverty and expand<strong>in</strong>g access toimproved water sources have been met.The number of children dy<strong>in</strong>g before their fifthbirthday decl<strong>in</strong>ed from 12.4 million <strong>in</strong> 1990 to8.1 million <strong>in</strong> 2009. Some of the poorest countrieshave achieved or are near<strong>in</strong>g universal primaryeducation, with global statistics show<strong>in</strong>g that theworld has achieved parity <strong>in</strong> primary educationbetween girls and boys.While these achievements should be celebrated,much rema<strong>in</strong>s to be done, <strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g on issuessuch as reduc<strong>in</strong>g maternal mortality, improv<strong>in</strong>gsanitation and address<strong>in</strong>g hunger and malnutrition.Even when targets at global or national levels havebeen reached, wide disparities rema<strong>in</strong> across andwith<strong>in</strong> countries. In short, the bus<strong>in</strong>ess ofthe MDGs is unf<strong>in</strong>ished.Look<strong>in</strong>g forward, discussions have begun atmany levels on a post-2015 development agenda.This is expected to further advance the unf<strong>in</strong>ishedbus<strong>in</strong>ess of the MDGs, <strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g the eradicationof poverty. Any new goals should <strong>in</strong>tegrate actionson the economic, social and environmentaldimensions of development. Strong coord<strong>in</strong>ationof the UN development system will thus be morecritical than ever.Over the next three years, there must be af<strong>in</strong>al push to achiev<strong>in</strong>g the MDGs. In aid<strong>in</strong>gnational efforts, the UN system will cont<strong>in</strong>ue toprovide <strong>in</strong>puts with proven value: policy advice<strong>in</strong>formed by global experience and tailored tonational needs, support for the development ofnational capacities, and expertise on programmeimplementation. As the follow<strong>in</strong>g countrystories demonstrate, across a variety of coredevelopment issues, UN coord<strong>in</strong>ation is partof ensur<strong>in</strong>g that countries reap the best ofwhat the UN system has to offer.Some of the jo<strong>in</strong>t programmes <strong>in</strong> this report havereceived the generous support from the MDGAchievement Fund.
