OPTIONSA Wide Range of Options Customize the Furnace or Oven for your Specific ApplicationHIGH UNIFORMITY OPTIONSHIGH TEMPERATURE FANSFans are one good way to increase thegradient uniformity in the furnace. Fans willnormally provide a gradient uniformity withinthe furnace chamber of +/-15°F (+/-8.3°C) orbetter with appropriate loading of the furnace.Recirculation muffles are used to direct airflow at lower temperatures. The maximumcontinuous temperature of the standard aircooled fan system is 1875°F (1025°C). Watercooled fans can be used to 2200°F (1200°C).MULTI-ZONINGMulti-zone control, either with manual biasing ofSCRs or with multiple PID loops, is anotherimportant tool that L&L has perfected over theyears. We were a beta test sight for Honeywell’sUMC800 multi-loop control and continue totake advantage of its capability. We have put upto 30 zones in a box furnace.ATMOSPHERE OPTIONSATMOSPHERE SEALED CASE WITHFLOWMETER/REGULATORThe furnace case is tightly sealed for use witha protective inert atmosphere. Argon, nitrogenand gases enriched with up to 4% combustiblegas can be used. No safety systems arerequired for inert gas.COMBUSTIBLE ATMOSPHERE OPTIONSSome furnaces are available with hydrogen orcarbon enriched neutral atmospheres. Automaticburn offs, gas mixing systems, automaticpurging and safety systems are available. NFPA-86C (National Fire Protection Agency) standardsfor special atmosphere furnaces are metor exceeded. See pages 16 & 30.ALLOY MUFFLES AND RETORTSAlloy muffles and retorts are designed forspecific temperature and atmosphere conditions.Alloy retorts have a much better dewpoint than the more commonly used atmospheresealed case. See pages 14-17 & 31.DOOR OPTIONSCOUNTERBALANCED VERTICAL DOORSThe furnace door rides in a guillotine typevertical track which pulls the door away fromthe furnace seal as soon as it begins to openvertically. The door is attached to thecounterbalance by heavy roller chain. Themost common lifting device is a pneumaticcylinder with hand or foot valve but handcranks and electric operators are also used.800.459.0750VENTURI SYSTEMSMOTOR DRIVEN VENTURI SYSTEMA motor driven venturi vent system isavailable. This system sucks air out of thefurnace and pulls in fresh air. Air inlets arelocated per customer requirements, typicallyon the bottom. This creates a draft whilecontrolling the cold air going into the furnaceto minimize heat shock. Capacity is 300, 600,1250 CFM or greater, depending on need.Programmable systems with pneumaticdampers as shown below are typical.HEARTHS & LOAD SYSTEMSSILICON CARBIDE HEARTHSThese are standard on higher temperaturefurnaces like the GLF and GF. They areavailable as an option on XLE furnaces. Theoptional hearths often feature molded sides. The silicon carbide hearths are normally1-1/2” thick and are typically fixed in placewith cemented firebrick. Silicon carbidefeatures high strength at high temperatures, anon-warping flat surface, and excellent heattransfer (which is especially important if thereare elements under the hearth).ALLOY HEARTHSFurnaces that operate below 2200°F (1200°C)are available with fabricated alloy hearths. These have welded sides (normally 1” high)and reinforced bottoms. The alloy is dependenton temperature and weight.ROLLER HEARTHS AND TRAYSCast alloy hearths with matching roller railsare often used for loading of heavy loads.External roller assemblies, either fixed ormovable on casters, are also available.SERPENTINE HEARTHSFabricated “serpentine” hearth trays can bedesigned for almost any size and loading. Theyare made from a series of corrugated strips ofalloy and heavy flatbars tied together withalloy rods. Serpentine hearths have goodresistance to warpage because they canexpand and contract with heating and cooling.CASTABLE PIERSCastable piers for forklift loading are available. They are cast in sections that are easy tohandle. They are fully cured for strength.Holes for lifting during maintenance are castinto the piers. See photos on page 8 & 18.LOADING RACKS & BASKETSAlloy loading racks can be quoted. These canhave several shelves which are removable orcan be positioned at different heights. Rackscan be made to roll into furnace on roller railsfor quick loading and unloading. Alloy loadingbaskets with mesh liners are also supplied.FORKLIFT LOADER SYSTEMSForklift type loaders are designed to lift a largetray or loading basket into the furnace and setit down on piers. A self contained hydrauliccylinder and hand pump do the lifting. Theloaders can work with swivel casters or ontracks with fixed wheels. These are available ina variety of capacities. Larger loaders can bemotorized and include deadman controls (seepage 9). Our smallest 500 pound loader isshown below with its included tracks.MISCELLANEOUS OPTIONSOUTER CASE HEAT SHIELDThe furnace is provided with a series of sheetmetal shields attached to the outside of theprimary furnace case. These shields keep thecase temperature below 120°F (50°C). Ventilatedshields with eductor fans are availablefor air conditioned rooms.PEEPHOLES, VENTS & SURVEY PORTSA variety of survey ports, vents, probe ports, peepholes and viewing windows are available.Page 3

CBH 124Atmosphere Controlled Neutral Hardening Tool Room FurnaceAPPLICATIONSThe CBH124 Atmosphere Box Furnace isspecifically designed for neutral hardeningwith virtually no decarburization or oxidation. The CBH124 incorporates many features likea compact control panel and stand, pneumaticvertical door, silicon carbide hearth, door heatshield, vent hood, peephole, heavy gauge lowvoltage elements, program control, high limitcontrol, and low mass ceramic fiber insulationthat are options on many other furnaces.Thismakes for a very complete and versatilefurnace. Gas levels and resulting carbon levelsobtained with the propane or natural gas areset by experience with the manual atmospherecontrols. The maximum temperatureof 2250°F (1230°C) allows this furnace to beused for high speed tool steels. The CBH 124is highly uniform in temperature gradient. Seepage 30 for larger neutral hardening andcarburizing furnaces.FEATURESAPM HEAVY ROD OVERBEND ELEMENTSHeavy duty low voltage Kanthal APM sinterediron-aluminum-chrome alloy rod/overbendelements are standard. This alloy is highlyresistant to carburizing and will take the hightemperatures as well. Elements are located onthe sides and bottom. These are particularlysuited for carbon rich atmospheres. Withregular burnout in air they will provideexcellent life. They rely on their protectionfrom the atmosphere by forming a thinaluminum oxide coating on the surface of theelement. Because they have a thick (6 mm)cross section, they are more resistant tobreakage, cracking and embrittlement thanthinner gauge wire coiled elements.CERAMIC FIBER INSULATION2-1/2” of 2600°F (1425°C) low iron ceramicfiber board backed up with 2” of 1900°F(1035°C) board and 4” of mineral wool. Thiscombination of insulation provides very efficientheat up characteristics and low heat loss.HARD BRICK VESTIBULEA refractory vestibule protects the elements, supports the hearth, minimizes the dooropening to promote temperature uniformityand allows for a very efficient interlocking doorseal. The door seal includes a fiber gasket.HEAVY DUTY ATMOSPHERE TIGHT CASEThe case is gas tight with full gasketing. Anintegrated heavy duty stand is included.Page 6DOOR HEAT SHIELDA heat shield is attached to the furnace door. This maintains an external door casetemperature of under 120°F (50°C).BUILT IN VENT HOODA vent hood is designed into the furnace tocollect products of combustion from theburn off and unspent gases when the dooropens. This vent hood terminates in a 4”diameter standard duct fitting.PNEUMATIC LIFT DOORA pneumatic cylinder lifts and tightly seals thevertical door. The door rides in guide tracks.Door operation is with a pneumatic handoperated valve which allows the door to beraised or lowered with one switch.SILICON CARBIDE HEARTHHearth is 1” thick silicon carbide with 1/2”high molded sides. Silicon carbide hasexcellent heat transfer characteristics, remainsflat at high temperatures and is strong.PEEPHOLEA 3/4” diameter peephole allows viewing insidethe furnace without disturbing the atmosphere.NITROGEN/CARBON ATMOSPHEREThe propane or natural gas cracks intohydrogen, carbon monoxide, nitrogen and freecarbon. This counteracts the decarburizingeffect of trace oxygen and water vapor at hightemperatures. The flow system consists of anitrogen and propane or natural gas line withflowmeters, regulators, gauges, pressure reliefvalves, solenoids and shut off valves in a selfcontained flow panel (mounted under thefurnace as shown or under the control panel onthe side of the unit). An audible alarm indicatesany alarm condition. A 1400°F (760°C) alarmshuts off flammable gas. A nitrogen low flowswitch prevents flammable gas from flowingunless a minimum flow is achieved. Emergencypurge is activated if there is a power failure. Thismeets NFPA-86C standards.HONEYWELL PROGRAM CONTROLThe standard control is a Honeywell UDC3300 digital program control with six rampsand six soaks. The power control is a mercurycontactor (SCR is optional). A power transformersupplies low voltage to the elements. All fuses, contactors, and controls are locatedin a NEMA 12 panel with a fused disconnectswitch which can be mounted under thefurnace or on the side. Thermocouples areheavy-wall inconel sheathed type K. Thecontrol voltage is 120 volts. Thehigh KW option will typically trim this to onehour. Cool down to 500°F (260°C) is approximatelyfive hours. Optional venturi will speedcooling dramatically.EXCELLENT UNIFORMITYThe furnace is uniform to within +/-20°F(+/-11°C) above 1400°F (760°C) within theuniform working dimensions (see specificationchart). Optional multi-zone controland fan systems are available for tighteruniformity of up to +/-5°F (+/-2.8°C) or better.EVEN ELEMENT PLACEMENTEach element is separately and evenly spacedon the bottom, sides, door and back in rowsof ceramic holders. This is the finest method ofdistributing radiant heat energy at hightemperatures and is unique to L&L furnaces.ZONE CONTROL FOR HIGH UNIFORMITYThe elements are divided into top andbottom zones. The control output is routedthrough two input switches to allowadjustment of the total time on to each zone. There are thermocouples mounted top andbottom with a selector switch to read thedifferential. Special designs with up to sixzones or more and SCR power controls onseparate PID loops can be used to promoteeven greater temperature uniformity.800.459.0750TEMPERATURES TO 2350°F (1285°C)Some options such as fans and other alloycomponents may limit this temperature.LOW WATT DENSITY FOR LONG LIFEThe standard elements are coiled from highgrade iron-aluminum-chrome alloy (KanthalA-1 or the equivalent). Nickel-chrome(80-20), Chromel AA, APM and other alloysare available for special atmospheres andapplications. A watt density normally below10 watts per square inch maximizes elementlife. (Watt density is the ratio of watts tosquare inches of radiating surface area).HEAVY DUTY CASE - INTEGRATED STANDThe furnace case is constructed of 10 gaugesteel with external bracing angles welded tothe entire case and base assembly. Levelingbolts, anchoring holes and lifting rings areincluded. The main seams are continuouslywelded for an attractive appearance. A WIDE VARIETY OF HEARTHSThe standard hearth is one or more ceramicplates elevated on ceramic blocks 1-1/2”above the bottom elements. This air spaceimproves uniformity. Silicon carbide plates, alloy plates, roller hearths, baskets, racks, loaders, castable piers, air cooling tables andmany other loading options are available.CERAMIC ELEMENT HOLDERSThe elements are supported in proprietaryhigh temperature ceramic element holders. These provide perfect support for the coiledelement and excellentradiatingcharacteristics. The smooth surfaceof the holderprevents prematurefailure of theelement as it expandsand contracts.Theseholders, coupled witha unique all ceramicelement terminal, make elementreplacement easy. Being recessed into thewall of the furnace these elements are not assusceptible to mechanical damage as someother types of element support systems.CERAMIC ELEMENT TERMINALS MAKEELEMENT CONNECTIONS EASY ANDTROUBLE FREEUnique all ceramic element terminal blocksdesigned by L&L allow the element ends to beclamped without twisting the whole endaround a terminal bolt, making it easy toremove an element. The connection wires canbe easily removedwithout disturbingthe element termination(which allowsyou to easily isolatean element for aresistance check). The heavy ceramicterminal block featuresunusually good electricalisolation andprotects the wires.DOUBLE PIVOTED PLUG DOOR KEEPSHEAT AWAY FROM OPERATOR ANDALLOWS FOR TIGHT DOOR SEALThe standard door is a double pivotedhorizontal plug door. The double pivotingallows the door to open like a parallelogramwhich keeps the hot face away from theoperator. There are two heavy duty clampsfor tight sealing. Because of the completelyhorizontal motion of the door as it is sealingthere is no wear on the seal face. The doorhas a 3/4” refractory plug which protrudesinto the furnace chamber and provides ahighly effective heat lock. There is a 3-1/2”refractory to refractory seal around thePage 8perimeter of the door. Counterbalancedvertical doors with hand crank, pneumatic orelectric actuator are options. Vertical doorslift away from the furnace seal before liftingup. Strong 3/16” thick reinforced door casingprevents door from warping from heat.PRESHAPED BRICK SECTIONS SAVE ONHEAT LOSS AND MAINTENANCE COSTSThe firebrick is cemented in sections on avery flat table. These sections are thenprecision cut and routed. All sections fittogether with engineered heat locks whichimprove the insulating integrity of the furnaceeven after many years of service. Bricksections can easily be installed by in-housemaintenance personnel saving on expensiveand hard-to-find specialized bricklayer labor. All refractory is coated with a special facingthat prolongs firebrick life and helps preventspalling and dusting.EFFICIENT MULTILAYERED INSULATIONThe furnace is insulated with 4-1/2” of low Kfactor refractory firebrick backed up by 2” ofmineral wool board on all surfaces except thebottom, which has 2” of hard calcium silicateback up for solid hearth support. This yieldsan excellent combination of strength, insulatingquality, and fast heat up and cool downtimes. XLC SERIESAlloy Retort Furnaces (for Hydrogen and Low Dew Point Inert Atmospheres)APPLICATIONSThe XLC Series Atmosphere Retort Furnacesrepresent an advanced design whichemphasizes process quality and control as wellas operator safety. The control system, alloyretort and flow system are completelyintegrated as one unified system. Any applicationrequiring 100% hydrogen or a mix ofhydrogen, carbon monoxide, natural gas orany other combustible atmosphere (aswell as any purely inert atmospheres) maybe used in the XLC Series. Hydrogenbrazing, magnetic steel processing, specialcoatings and stainless steel annealing aretypical examples. Any batch process thatcannot tolerate oxygen or that requires a highdegree of atmosphere reliability, repeatabilityand low dew point is a candidate for thisfurnace. Maximum temperature is 2200°F(1200°C) with Inconel retorts. Dependingon the purity of the gas used thesefurnaces can maintain a dew point aslow as -60°F (-50°C).FEATURESThis XLC 3348 shows the typical door cart and hydrogen control panel. The retort is“D” shaped corrugated inconel for the highest possible strength. A venturi cooler is also shown.FURNACE IS BASED ON XLE SERIESThe furnace system is a modified XLE Serieselectric furnace. (See pages 7-9).ALLOY RETORT FOR LOW DEW POINTThe XLC furnaces features an alloy retort totightly contain the atmosphere. This preventsoxygen infiltration, providing a very low dewpoint for clean processing and safe operation.Depending on the size and temperature, retorts are “D” shaped and/or corrugated forextra strength. The alloy normally used is 330alloy, Inconel 600 or 601, or may be otheralloys selected for specific applications.PLUG RETORT DOOR WITH SILICONERUBBER “O” RING WATER COOLED SEALRetort door is a deep plug (typically 12”deep) that protrudes into the retort cavity. The inside of the plug is insulated withceramic fiber. The door plug is made of thesame alloy as the retort and is completelysurrounded with the alloy rather thanexposing the refractory to the atmosphere asin some competitive designs. This insures thatno oxygen gets trapped in the insulation andlater reenters the chamber at high temperatures. There is a silicone rubber “O” ringseal around the perimeter of the machinedflange of the retort. This is cooled by waterwhich runs in an enclosed channel. Acomplete water cooling system includes aflow switch which interrupts power to thePage 14elements if there is no water flow. The dooris closed with quick release turn down latches. This forms an extremely tight seal and allowsvery low dew point operation. These sealswill withstand high pressures. Most doors(except the smallest ones) feature a cart thatholds the retort door (as shown above).Smaller doors are removed by hand.ATMOSPHERE SAMPLE PORTA sample port with a shut-off valve is provided. This is used to sample the atmosphere foroxygen, hydrogen and dew point.ATMOSPHERE CONTROLA variety of atmosphere control systems canbe provided. See page 16 for informationabout hydrogen systems. In addition, simpleregulators and flowmeters can be providedfor inert gas use. A pressure relief valve andretort pressure gauge are included.UMC800 CONTROL WITH PLC LOGICThe standard control for hydrogen systems isa Honeywell UMC800 program control withPLC logic control of the safety system. Inertsystems use a UDC2300 digital control. Allfuses, transformers, contactors and controlsare housed in a NEMA 1 panel. If hydrogen isused then a purged NEMA 12 control panel isstandard. Quiet, long life mercury powercontactors are standard, but the SCR powercontrol option is recommended for longerretort life. The thermocouple is a sheathedtype K inserted into the retort. Limit switchesshut off furnace power if the door is openedor the power panel back is removed.UDC2300 digital high limit back up controlwith manual reset, back up contactors andseparate thermocouple included. The thermocouplefor the high limit control is locatedbetween the retort and the elements.OPTIONS● REMOVABLE RETORT SYSTEM: Removableretorts allow faster cool down under atmosphere. However, retort life is reduced because of heatshock. This option is available only on the smallerretorts (10” & 12” wide retorts). Includesintegrated cart and track.● UMC800 DATALOGGER: The UMC800 caninclude a data recorder with up to 64 points of datainput.● POWERED VENTURI VENT: A 300, 600 or1250 CFH motor powered venturi will shorten thecool down rate of the furnace, especially in thelower temperature ranges. The venturi pulls cool airaround the outside of the retort without disturbingthe atmosphere inside. This is highly recommendedfor quicker turn-around, higher production ratesand lower atmosphere consumption. See page 3 andabove photograph.www.hotfurnace.com

Atypical system includes one plug insulatedbase, one bell shaped round alloy retort, onevertical lift bell furnace, one separateinsulated “parking” base, and an overheadhoist and shuttle system. However, it can havemultiple retorts and bases as shown in thephotograph. The control system, alloy retortand flow system are completely integrated asone unified system. Any application requiring100% hydrogen, a mix of hydrogen or anyother combustible atmosphere (as well as anypurely inert atmospheres) may be used in theJSC Series. Hydrogen brazing, special coatings(such as on turbine blades), magnetic steelprocessing, stainless steel annealing andsolution treating are typical examples. Anybatch process that cannot tolerate oxygen orthat requires a low dew point is a candidatefor this furnace. Maximum temperature is2200°F (1200°C) although lower maximumtemperatures are recommended for longretort life. The system is ideal for quick cooldown under controlled atmosphere conditions. The round retort holds up well to thestress of heating and cooling and is nevermoved while hot. The type of alloy used isdependent on the temperature and application.Inlet, outlet and thermocouples aremounted through the bottom base assembly. The base features an insulation plug which is800.459.0750completely covered with alloy so that nowater vapor can get trapped in the insulationand outgas to the work chamber. There is asilicone rubber “O” ring seal around theperimeter of the retort. This is cooled bywater which runs in an enclosed channelThis is a model JSC 2436 with two retort bases, two hydrogen atmosphere panels and a resting base in the center.around the perimeter of the base. The retortis secured with quick release bolt downlatches. This forms an extremely tight sealand allows very low dew point operation (upto -60°F / -50°C).The most popular size of theretort is 24” diameter by 36” high.Page 15

H2 SERIESHydrogen Control Panels and Safety Systems for Alloy Retort FurnacesAPPLICATIONSThe H2 Series Flow Control System isdesigned for introducing and controllinghydrogen in a closed retort batch furnace likethe XLC and JSC Series. The safety systemexceed the NFPA-86C (National Fire ProtectionAssociation) standards for controlledatmosphere furnaces. With this system hydrogenmay be introduced into a furnaceretort at any temperature. Hydrogen is usedfor bright annealing of stainless steel andcopper alloys, chemical reductions, magneticsteels, coatings, brazing and many otherprocesses. Flow rates and ranges areengineered for specific systems althoughtypical flow rates are three to ten volumechanges per hour.FEATURESATMOSPHERE FLOW CONTROLThere are three separate flow systems, onefor hydrogen, one for purge gas and one foremergency purge. All three lines includeseparate shut off valve, pressure regulator, relief valve, pressure gauge, solenoid forautomatic shut off, flowmeter with regulatingvalve and check valve. In addition thehydrogen line includes a low flow switchwhich will shut off hydrogen if flow is notsufficient to maintain positive retort pressure.A delay timer temporarily bypasses theswitch for hydrogen introduction. A flamearrestor is also on the hydrogen line. The twopurge lines include pressure switches tomonitor the ability of the purge gas to flow incase of an alarm condition. Low pressureopens solenoids from both lines. Purge gasmay be nitrogen, argon or helium - althoughargon needs special engineering to workproperly. A totally separate emergency inertgas purge line includes a normally opensolenoid for automatic actuation. Emergencypurge is activated in case of a power failure.INERT PURGE IN ELEMENT CHAMBERThe furnace has a separate inert atmospherepurge between the outside of the retort andthe elements. This has its own flowmeterwith regulating valve and branches off theinert process gas purge. This protects thesystem in case of a leak in the retort. It isespecially important when operating withhydrogen below 1400°F (760°C). A low flowswitch will initiate emergency purge if there isa low flow of purge gas around the retort.Page 16ELECTRIC BURN OFF IGNITORAn electric ignitor maintains a positiveignition source at the gas exit. The systemsignals an alarm to shut off hydrogen if theignition source is lost.WATER COOLING SYSTEM & ALARMOn retorts that have water cooled seals amanual ball valve shut off, flowmeter andregulating valve, relief valve and low flowswitch are included plus hook ups for theinlet and outlet. The low flow alarm turns offelement power and hydrogen flow and theninitiates a purge. Self-contained circulatingwater cooling systems are also available.VISUAL AND AUDIBLE ALARMSAn audible buzzer with silencer is provided toindicate any alarm condition. In addition, control indicators or pilot lights indicateprecisely which alarm conditions areactivated and what gasses are flowing. Thesilencer does not turn off indicators.PURGED CONTROL PANELThe main electrical control panel is purgedwith instrument air or nitrogen. A differentialswitch must be activated for the controlsystem to operate. All electrical componentsthat are in the hydrogen flow area are eitherexplosion proof, intrinsically safe or renderedsafe per N.E.C. (National Electrical Code)articles 500 and 501.LOW TEMPERATURE ALARMA temperature based alarm can be set at anytemperature (normally 1400°F / 760°C) belowwhich hydrogen shuts off. This is not strictlynecessary when using the purge in, purge outmethod of hydrogen introduction or removal;however, it is an extra level of safety that canbe used when desired.LOSS OF EXHAUST VENTILATIONA differential pressure switch installed in theventilation system initiates purge and shuts offall power in the case of low ventilation flow.SAFETY REGULATIONSThis atmosphere system meets or exceedsthe standards of the National Fire ProtectionAgency for controlled atmosphere furnaces(NFPA-86C). L&L will provide all necessaryinformation to customer’s insurance carrieror other authorities for approval purposes.ATMOSPHERE INSTRUCTIONSA very complete instruction manual includestheory of operation, full maintenanceinstructions and schedules, component lists, component instructions, data sheets, emergencyprocedures, cautions, start up and shutdown procedures and a complete flowschematic of the atmosphere system.INTRODUCTION OF HYDROGENThe hydrogen must be introduced into thefurnace manually by activating a switch on thecontrol panel. This is according to theNFPA-86C standards. An automatic purgecycle with automatic introduction ofhydrogen is not allowed. Using the “purge in”method the operator must twice confirmthat the oxygen content inside the furnace isbelow 1% before introducing hydrogen.OTHER GASSES AND PANELSOther gasses such as ammonia, carbondioxide, carbon monoxide, oxygen, etc. can beintegrated into the gas mixing panel withappropriate safety systems. In addition wemake nitrogen/methanol panels (see page 30)and nitrogen/propane or natural gas panels(see page 6). We only make atmospherepanels for our own furnaces.OPTIONS● OXYGEN/HYDROGEN ANALYZER: Nova340 Portable combination oxygen and hydrogenanalyzer is commonly supplied. This meets the NFPArequirements for gas analysis when doing the purgein, purge out method of hydrogen introduction andremoval. Includes power supply and pump.● DELTA F OXYGEN ANALYZER: Model PA31525 A-Plus. An alarm prevents hydrogen fromflowing and initiating a nitrogen purge at any timeif oxygen level rises above 1%.● HYDROGEN LEAK MONITOR: Monitorsroom air. Calibrated for 1/4 of the LEL (1%hydrogen). An alarm output from this sensor shutsoff hydrogen and activates audible alarm.● BUBBLER FOR WET HYDROGEN: A manualor event driven bypass allows the hydrogen to bepiped through a bubbler to make wet hydrogen.Automatic PID control is also optional.● MASS FLOWMETERS: One or more of theatmosphere lines can have a mass flowmeter tocontrol the flow rates very precisely. This can berecorded with an output to a datalogger.● HYDROGEN HIGH FLOW SWITCH: A highflow switch shall initiate purge when 150% ofprocess requirements are exceeded.● STAINLESS PIPING FOR HYDROGEN: Allflow components in the hydrogen line and allpiping and fittings can be made of stainless steel.Compression fittings or all welded connections canbe used. Also piping and components can becleaned for oxygen service.● INSTRUMENT AIR FILTERS FOR PANELPURGE: Two special Balston filters convertcompressed air into instrument quality air for thepanel purge.● START UP & TRAINING SERVICE: Two tothree days is typical.www.hotfurnace.com

XLG SERIESMulti-Burner High Velocity Gas Fired Box FurnacesAPPLICATIONSThe XLG Series Furnaces aremulti-purpose Gas Fired BoxFurnaces. They are highly uniformin temperature and feature accuratedigital controls and multiplemedium or high velocityEclipse “Thermjet” proportionallycontrolled burnerswith an independent combustionblower. The XLG furnacescan be rated as high as 2400°F(1315°C) although the typicalrating is 2000°F (1095°C).Connected gas pressure canbe as low as one psi. Thecirculation of the hot gases, especially with multiple velocityburners, promotes good temperatureuniformity without the useof high temperature fans. The burners can beadjusted to run lean to provide a slightlyreducing atmosphere (although this cannotbe precisely controlled). These furnaces areexcellent for ceramics processing and mostmetallurgical work where precise atmospherecontrol is not required. Systems can bedesigned with excess air for high uniformityat low temperatures.FEATURESECLIPSE THERMJET VELOCITY BURNERSThe furnace is heated with two or more“Thermjet” medium or high velocity burners. These typically fire over the load with burnerplacement balanced to maximize circulation ofthe combustion gasses. In larger units theymay be configured to fire over and under theload. These are sized for the proper BTUrequirements for your load and fuel type. Inaddition the choice of high or medium velocityis an engineering choice dependent on loadconfiguration and furnace size. The burnersfeature low NOX emissions, integral gas andair orifice plates (for precise gas and airbalancing), high velocity for good temperatureuniformity in the furnace and excellent turndownratio of 50:1 for a wide range of control. The burners are direct ignition whicheliminates the need for a bypass pilot.FM GAS TRAIN & COMBUSTION BLOWERThe gas system includes two hydraulicmechanicalshut off valves, manual shut offvalve, pressure regulator and pressure gauges. Each burner has gas and air adjustments andshut off valves. A proportionating valve, controlled by the combustion air, maintainsPage 18This is model XLG 666 with fiveThermJet 1,000,000 BTU burners.stoichiometric air/gas ratio. Systems can bedesigned to fire with excess air for highuniformity at low temperatures. Combustionair is provided by a centrifugal blower. An airpressure gauge and switch monitor performance.IRI rated gas train is optional.ELECTRONIC FLAME SAFETY SYSTEM,SPARK IGNITOR AND PURGE TIMEREach burner is ignited with a spark plugautomatically actuated from the Eclipse Multi-Flame Series 6000 flame safety system. UV(ultra violet) sensors monitor each burner. Before ignition the system goes through atimed purge with the combustion air. Safetyinterlocks include a combustion air pressureswitch and high/low gas pressure switch.Thedigital Eclipse Multi-Flame 6000 flamemonitoring system indicates the status of theburners and gas train. It includes runningtime along with voltage signal from each UVsensor. It will alert the operator of anyproblem with the burners, air flow or gaspressure and will provide “first out” informationto actually pinpoint a problem. Theoperator only needs to press the RESET keyto restart the burner firing sequence.HIGH TEMPERATURE UNIFORMITYThe furnace uniformity is +/-15°F (+/-8.3°C)above 1200°F (650°C) within the workingdimensions. High uniformity at lowertemperatures can be achieved with excess air.EFFICIENT CERAMIC FIBER INSULATIONThe sides, back, door and top surfaces aretypically insulated with 2300°F (1260°C) ceramicfiber modules, 8” thick, 10 LB density, althoughthis is easily modified for different temperatureranges and applications. The bottom is insulatedwith a combination of castable and firebrick.Loads can be directly placed on this strongbottom. Optional castable piers (as shownabove),ceramic, silicon carbide, serpentine or flatalloy hearth plates are available.HEAVY DUTY CASEThe furnace case is constructed of heavygauge steel with structural stiffeners, liftingrings and leveling bolts.COUNTERBALANCED VERTICAL DOORThe standard furnace door is a counterbalancedvertical door with a pneumaticopener and hand or foot operated valve. (Seepage 12). Double pivoted horizontal doorsare optional (standard on 6 and 8 foot highmodels as shown above).DIGITAL CONTROL WITH HIGH LIMITThe standard control is a Honeywell UDC2300 digital PID tuning control. They are uniform in temperatureand feature accurate Honeywell digitalcontrols and a single proportionally controlledburner with a 50:1 turn down ratio for accuratecontrol. The burner maintains stoichiometricgas/air ratios. The XLM furnaces reach2100°F (1135°C). Connected gas pressurecan be as low as 4” W.C. Electrical requirementsare 15 amps at 120 volts. The circulationof the hot gases promotes good temperatureuniformity without the use of hightemperature fans. The furnace is uniform towithin +/ 25°F (+/-14°C) above 1200°F (650°C)within the working dimensions. The burnercan be adjusted to run lean to provide aslightly reducing atmosphere (although thiscan not be precisely controlled). Thesefurnaces are excellent for ceramics processingand most metallurgical work where preciseatmosphere control is not required. They areparticularly useful where fumes need to bevented from the furnace, such as in wax burnout work. The single “package” type burnermakes them an economical choice in a small800.459.0750to medium size furnace. The furnace is heatedwith one Eclipse Model 50 MMB Minimaticburner with integral air and gas butterflyvalves. The burner is mounted in the furnacewith a special 2100°F (1150°C) burner blockand holder. The burner is located in the backof the furnace at the top, firing over the load. There is one flue at the back bottom on theopposite side as the burner. This location vsthe location of the burner makes the burnerflame circulate all the way around the inside ofthe chamber for maximum efficiency. GHH SERIES1700°C Ceramic Fiber Lined Front Loading Box FurnacesAPPLICATIONSThe GHH Series Ultra High TemperatureFront Loading Box Furnacesfeature a unique lightweight ultrahigh temperature ceramic fiber insulationsystem for fast heat up andlow BTU input requirements. TheGHH series achieves 1700°C (3100°F)under continuous operation. Theinsulation system, which is the mostfragile and difficult aspect of this typeof furnace, is uncompromised inquality and construction detail. It isguaranteed for one full year - animportant consideration with thistype of furnace.FEATURESMULTILAYERED FIBER INSULATIONThe furnace is insulated with multi-layeredhigh alumina and alumina-silicate ceramicfiber board. The hot face is prefired highalumina board made by Zircar or Rath. Theinsulation is segmented and supported by aseries of splines, alumina rods and sapphireclips. This is the most critical part of thefurnace design in terms of longevity. Tripleheat locks are designed into the system forextra protection at high temperatures. Avestibule protects the molybdenum disilicideelements and prevents excessive heat losswhen the front door is opened.MOLYBDENUM DISILICIDE ELEMENTSThe elements are Kanthal Super 33 U-shapedmolybdenum disilicide elements. These willwithstand 1800°C (3275°F) in air. Allelectrical connections are at the top, and theelements are suspended from the roof. Theelectrical resistivity of these elementsremains constant over time with little aging. This allows replacement of one elementwithout changing all elements, a distinctadvantage over silicon carbide elements. Lowwatt density is designed into the elements formaximum element life. All aluminum elementconnection hardware is used to preventgalvanic corrosion.DOUBLE WALL CASE CONSTRUCTIONThe insulation module has its own rigid nonwarpingrefractory board exterior. Thisinsulation module is inserted into a ventilatedsteel casing leaving an air space between theexterior case and the insulation module. Thisallows for cooling of the insulation, importantin long insulation life, and helps maintain acool external case temperature. LargerPage 24Model GHH 36.furnaces feature integral cooling fans toinsure good cold face strength of theinsulation. The GHH 5 and GHH 8 are benchmounted while all others are floor mountedwith an integrated stand.DEEP PLUG DOOR CONSTRUCTIONThe horizontally opening door features adeep plug type seal with triple heat locks. Two pivots, one on the left and one in thecenter of the door, insure very tight sealing. Avestibule around the door opening furtherreduces heat loss and helps protect theelements.GOOD TEMPERATURE UNIFORMITYUniformity of +/-10°C (+/-18°F) is normalabove 1200°C (2200°F) within 2/3 of theworking dimensions.ALUMINA HEARTHThe hearth is a flat alumina plate (or series ofplates) supported by a series of insulatingalumina posts which transfer the weight ofthe hearth all the way to the bottom of thecold face of the bottom insulation.FAST HEAT UP AND COOL DOWNThe all fiber insulation and Kanthal Super 33elements provide extremely fast heating andcooling response.PID DIGITAL CONTROL, HIGH LIMITCONTROL AND SCR POWER CONTROLThe standard control used is a HoneywellUDC2300 digital PID tuning control. Amatched transformer and phase angle firedSCR controls power to the elements. Thethermocouples are type B. Included is aUDC2300 digital high limit back up controlwith manual reset, back up contactors andseparate type B thermocouple.OPTIONS● NEMA 12 PANEL OPTION: Includes a fuseddisconnect switch.● ATMOSPHERE CONTROL: The GHHfurnaces can be fitted for use with inertatmospheres. This is accomplished by having asecondary atmosphere casing that contains theinsulation module. This casing has its own gasketeddoor. Inlet of the atmosphere is through theelement connection chamber to maintain coolelement connections. A completely pipedflowmeter and regulator with ball valve, pressuregauge and pressure relief valve is included.Maximum furnace use temperature is limited to1600°C (2910°F) in nitrogen, argon or helium.Combustible atmospheres are not allowed.● RAMP/SOAK PROGRAM CONTROLS● TEMPERATURE RECORDERS● STANDS FOR BENCH MOUNTED UNITSwww.hotfurnace.com

Each furnace system typicallyincludes two or three fixed stationary bases anda moving furnace that “shuttles” between thetwo bases. The stationary bases provide a stableplatform for loading delicate loads. The base iseasy to load because it can be loaded from allfour sides. Normally the furnace is removedfrom the fired load at a fairly high temperaturefor a fast cool down in the slowest part of thecooling curve. This greatly adds to the efficiencyof the whole system. We have made these foruse with atmosphere retorts which are quick tocool down and easy to load. Typical temperaturesreached are 2200°F (1200°C).This is a custom designedFS 234 which was designedto process very delicatesatellite battery materials.FEATURESMOST FEATURES ARE SIMILAR TO THE FCSERIES CAR BOTTOM FURNACESKILN MOVERElectric or manual kiln movers are offered.SHUTTLE CASE DESIGNOne to three bases are included along withtracks above or below floor level.HORIZONTAL OR VERTICAL DOORSThere are one or two doors which can bevertical or horizontal.FS SPECIFICATIONSWORKMODEL WORK DIMENSIONS INSIDE DIMENSIONS OUTSIDE DIMENSIONS TOTAL CUBIC TYPICAL LOAD SHIPNUMBER W H D W H D W H D LENGTH FEET KW WEIGHT WEIGHTFS 224 30 48 48 38 54 56 88 92 80 196 40 86 750 7,400FS 246 30 48 72 38 54 80 88 92 104 244 60 113 1,125 9,300FS 2412 30 48 144 38 54 152 88 92 176 388 120 192 2,250 15,300FS 2424 30 48 288 38 54 296 88 92 320 676 240 351 4,500 27,200FS 4512 48 60 144 56 66 152 106 104 176 388 240 267 3,600 19,600FS 4524 48 60 288 56 66 296 106 104 320 676 480 478 7,200 34,800Dimensions are in inches. QT SERIESAgitated and Heated Heavy-Duty Quench TanksAPPLICATIONSThe QT Series Quench Tanks are used for theuniform quenching of hot steels. They may beused with water, light weight polymer or oil. They are not designed for use with brine.Water or polymer must have rust inhibitors(or tank must be stainless steel). They featureproper agitation which insures uniformquench temperatures and disperses thebubbles of vaporized quenchant that form onthe surface of the hot parts being quenched. These bubbles, if not dispersed, can causeuneven quenching times which would result ina unevenly and poorly quenched part. Theagitation also prevents localized overheatingwhich, in the case of oil quench media, couldcause a fire. The QT Series Quench Tanks alsofeature integrated controlled heaters andlarge inlet and outlet taps for optional coolingsystems. An optional hinged lid provides ameans to extinguish any potential quench oilfires and to keep quench media clean.FEATURESDOUBLE WELDED CONSTRUCTIONThe tank is made from 3/16” steel (1/4” onModel QT 3648 and larger) and is completelyreinforced.
