Team Stoughtondominant in 2011 championshipsBy Resby Coutts of thecurler.comAt the start of the 2010-11 curling season, Jeff Stoughton was faced with a choice. The previous year,Stoughton had won his 8th Manitoba championship playing with long-time lead Steve Gould, RobFowler and Kevin Park. The choice was simple. He could continue with the same team, or even with three of the four, and hewould automatically qualify for the provincial Safeway championship. Or he could re-build the team and tryto return to the Brier with a new foursome.Choosing the latter route, Gould stayed on at lead and Stoughton recruited an old friend, Jon Mead, toplay third. They had won three Manitoba titles (1999, 2000, 2006) and the 1999 Canadian title together. The final piece of the puzzle came in the form of a young skip, Reid Carruthers, recruited to play second. There were questions, of course. Could Stoughton and Mead recapture the old magic? Could Carruthersrebound from a knee injury suffered the season before and make the adjustment to the second position? With a record eight men’s titles, Stoughton was already acknowledged as the best in Manitoba history butdid he still have the fire in him to work at winning another? Arguably the best lead in Manitoba curlinghistory, could Gould continue to play the physically demanding position at the same level? The answer, over one of the most dominating runs in Manitoba and Canadian curling history, was YES toall of the questions.Without the automatic Safeway Championship entry, Team Stoughton entered the first berth bonspiel inPortage la Prairie and went undefeated to ensure they would be back for another run.Mike McEwen and his young team, the foursome everyone expects to be the next great Manitoba team, had already qualified via the Canadian Team Rankings System. With the previous year’s two finalist teamsin place, the Beausejour host committee was able to look forward to a final game rematch and that wasthe way the championship developed.Team Stoughton advanced to the Sunday afternoon final undefeated. McEwen had lost only one gamein returning to the rematch his team had been looking forward to all season. They had met three timesalready in major cash ‘spiels and McEwen had won each time – the finals of the Portage cash event and ofthe first Grand Slam, and the semi-final of the third Grand Slam event.McEwen had been seeded #1 coming into the championship and there was an equal split of opinion. This would be the year Team McEwen broke through OR one more for Stoughton. In the 2010 final, it took an extra end for a 9-8 Stoughton win. In 2011, it was a different game but theresult was the same. Stoughton led 4-2 playing the ninth and gave up a deuce to hold the hammer tied4-4 coming home. In the end, Stoughton had a routine draw to the eight-foot circle for his record ninthManitoba title. With five wins in Portage to qualify and seven to win the championship in Beausejour, without a loss,Team Stoughton was on a roll which continued into the Tim Hortons Brier in London, Ontario. In an 11-game round robin series, the Manitoba champions won 9 and lost only 2 (to Brad Gushue- Newfoundland/Labrador and to Glenn Howard - Ontario). The round robin finished with Manitoba,Newfoundland/Labrador and Alberta’s Kevin Martin equal at 9-2. Based on the tiebreak formula, they wereranked Gushue (1st), Stoughton (2nd), and Martin (3rd). Glenn Howard’s Ontario team was fourth at 8-3.Where Team Manitoba had accumulated a sterling 87% shooting percentage across the 11 preliminarygames, they improved their game to a team 90% in the Page 1-2 game as they went an extra end to beatTeam Gushue 7-6 and advance direct to the Brier final.30curlmanitoba YEARBOOK – 2011/12

After Howard eliminated Martin (5-4) and then Gushue (7-6), Team Ontario lined up against Manitobafor the championship. And again, Manitoba rose to the challenge, improving on their round robin 87%and the playoff game 90% shooting percentages to a remarkable team percentage of 96%.At 99%, lead Steve Gould matched Ontario lead Craig Savill shot for shot. Reid Carruthers, at 98%,was 8 points better than Brent Laing; Jon Mead (at 94%) bettered Richard Hart by 4 points; and JeffStoughton (at 93%) was 6 points better than Glenn Howard. At 11-2 in the Canadian Championship and 12-0 to win Manitoba, Team Stoughton rolled into theFord Worlds in Regina with a season 23-2 record and were the clear favourite to win a World title.Their hot shooting and winning ways continued as they piled up eight consecutive victories beforelosing their final round robin game 7-6 to Tomas Ulsrud and his Norwegian champions. It was a gameUlsrud had to win to qualify for the playoff round.Having finished first, the Manitobans defeated Scotland’s Tom Brewster 5-2 in the Page 1-2 Playoffgame, then waited for Scotland to eliminate Norway in the semi-final to set up a rematch in the final.Brewster took an early lead with some big shots but a Stoughton three-ender on the fifth end gave theCanadian team a 4-3 lead and a feeling began to grow that they would prevail. A deuce on the 8th endgave Stoughton a two point lead and when Brewster rolled out on the ninth to score just one, it meantTeam Canada had the hammer coming home with a one point lead. They were not going to lose.Shooting an impressive 88% as a team in the round robin, and a team 89% in each of the theirplayoff games, Jeff Stoughton, Jon Mead, Reid Carruthers, and Steve Gould posted a 10-1 record atthe Ford Worlds for an accumulated 33 wins and only 3 losses to win Manitoba, Canada and the WorldChampionships.“There’s nothing better than a world championship,” Stoughton told a reporter for the CCA website(www.curling.ca) after the game. “It’s better than the Brier. It’s one more step past the Brier and this isso much sweeter. I’m just so glad we got this one done. We had a goal set at the beginning of the yearwhich was pretty lofty – to win a world championship. Jon and I wanted it so bad this year. We just felt itwas our best opportunity.”For Carruthers and Mead it was a first world title – Mead had lost the 1999 world final withStoughton. For Gould and Stoughton it was a second World Championship to go with the championshipthey won together in 1996 in Hamilton.Looking forward to the 2011-12 season, perhaps another trip to the Brier, and who knows – maybean appearance in the 2013 Canadian Curling Trials in Winnipeg, Jeff Stoughton has already won nineManitoba Men’s titles. That’s five more than any other skip (Ken Watson and Howard Wood Sr. each hadfour) and three more than the next winningest Manitoban. That just happens to be his lead, Steve Gould.www.Curlmanitoba.org 31
