3.4 Methods <strong>of</strong> Exploitation and their Costs:Exploitation <strong>of</strong> timber is done through two agencies- the Forest Department, which marksthe trees that are to be felled and the Punjab State Forest Development Corporation, who doesthe actual fell<strong>in</strong>g. Fell<strong>in</strong>g, conversion and transportation are done on mechanical and economicalbasis. Imported tools and mach<strong>in</strong>ery like power cha<strong>in</strong> saws have been <strong>in</strong>troduced for thispurpose. Local labour is also employed for fell<strong>in</strong>g, conversion, logg<strong>in</strong>g, transport and load<strong>in</strong>g.All these activities are the responsibility <strong>of</strong> the PSFDC once the mark<strong>in</strong>g list <strong>of</strong> the trees ishanded over to them. The Forest Department gets royalty on various trees exploited or sold bythe Corporation.Sometimes when the Corporation is not <strong>in</strong> a position to cut all the trees <strong>of</strong>fered, thenthese trees are sold through open auctions conducted from time to time.The m<strong>in</strong>imum prices <strong>of</strong> timber and other wood <strong>of</strong> different species are fixed by thePSFDC and are revised from time to time to keep pace with the market trends <strong>of</strong> the openmarket.
