PREFACEThe preparation <strong>of</strong> Work<strong>in</strong>g Plan has never been as relevant an exercise as ithas been 1988 Forest Policy <strong>of</strong> India and the judgement <strong>in</strong> T.N.Godaverman Vs Union<strong>of</strong> India case <strong>in</strong> Hon'ble Supreme Court <strong>of</strong> India. A serious thought process has startedgo<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong>to the preparation <strong>work<strong>in</strong>g</strong> <strong>plan</strong> document. Further Hon'ble Court has given thedirections that the Govt. <strong>of</strong> India shall its say <strong>in</strong> the preparation <strong>of</strong> Work<strong>in</strong>g Plans <strong>of</strong>various states by way <strong>of</strong> <strong>in</strong>volvement <strong>of</strong> its representatives from the regional <strong>of</strong>fices <strong>of</strong>Govt. <strong>of</strong> India.Focus areas <strong>in</strong> the present <strong>work<strong>in</strong>g</strong> <strong>plan</strong> has been as follows:-1. Enhanc<strong>in</strong>g the <strong>forest</strong> cover and to ma<strong>in</strong>ta<strong>in</strong> the ecological balance.2. Improv<strong>in</strong>g productivity <strong>of</strong> exist<strong>in</strong>g <strong>forest</strong>s and to obta<strong>in</strong> susta<strong>in</strong>ed yield<strong>of</strong> timber.3. Special care has been taken to see that there must not be anyadverse effect on the regeneration status and <strong>forest</strong> cover whileharvest<strong>in</strong>g matured/over matured trees.4. To ma<strong>in</strong>ta<strong>in</strong> the diversity <strong>of</strong> the wild animals <strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g the avifaunapopulation.5 To create awareness and sensitize people about the <strong>forest</strong> and itsrole towards the welfare <strong>of</strong> the society on large.The salient features <strong>of</strong> the present <strong>work<strong>in</strong>g</strong> <strong>plan</strong> are as follows:-1. The ma<strong>in</strong> purpose <strong>of</strong> the Work<strong>in</strong>g Plan is the conservation <strong>of</strong> the Forestsand rais<strong>in</strong>g the ecological and environmental status <strong>of</strong> the area byimprov<strong>in</strong>g the grow<strong>in</strong>g stock.2. There has to be no fell<strong>in</strong>g <strong>of</strong> Shisham trees, fruit trees <strong>in</strong> all <strong>forest</strong>s.3. The prescribed yield has been reduced to 50% <strong>of</strong> the calculated yield.4. Indigenous and miscellaneous tree species will be given preference overexotic species <strong>in</strong> the <strong>plan</strong>tation programmes.5. There will be no clear fell<strong>in</strong>g <strong>of</strong> areas
