We suffered through a couple of damagingfrosts this winter, but do not fret. Youshould see signs of most of your plants startingto sprout. If you have not already done so,cut your perennials back to green growth. Youcan fertilize your garden beds with a goodquality fertilizer. A ratio of 6-6-6 with slowrelease minerals is good. Fertilize your palmsand shrubs. You can trim your azaleas afterthey are through blooming. This is a great time to plant zinnia seeds. There are many varieties. They are very easyto plant and love the Florida sunshine. Theywill grow with gusto. Mexican sunflowers, vincas, marigolds and cosmos also like theFlorida sunshine and are easily grown fromseed. Petunias and pansies will look nice untilJune. If you have them in a partly shady areaand keep them well watered, they will last longer.Impatiens must be in the shade and likeplenty of water. Some perennials that love our Florida summerare pentas, milkweed, firebush, firespike, salvia, plumbago, blue daze and bush daisies. Most of these are also butterfly attractors. Thisis also a great time to put in a patio garden ofherbs, tomatoes and peppers that you can enjoythroughout the summer. These plants willdo best in large pots filled with potting soil. This would be a good time to plug thosebare spots in your St. Augustine lawns. Yourplugs will grow faster if you enrich the areawith a little potting soil before putting in theplug. Keep the ground moist until the grassstarts to grow and watch for weeds. Theygrow faster than new grass. Atrazine is recommendedfor weed control in established St.Augustine lawns. You can buy this product inspray bottles at your local garden center anduse as needed. You do not need to fertilize your lawn if itis being done by On Top of World lawn service. If you fertilize your own lawn, 15 (Nitrogen)-0(Phosphorus)-15 (Potassium) is recommendedtwice a year — in the spring and in the fall(16-4-8 is also recommended). Remember —when you fertilize and water excessively, youare creating a great salad for Florida bugs. Ifyou get a large yellow spot on your lawn thatcontinues to grow in a circular fashion, youmay have chinch bugs. Check with On Top ofthe World Customer Service regarding pesticidespraying.Do not water more than once a week. If youare monitoring your own sprinkler system, turn it off during rainy periods. A sure signthat a lawn is being over-watered is dollarweeds. They cannot survive in dry conditions. Please try not to get upset if your lawn doesnot look good. You can’t win this one. Grass isvery difficult to grow in Florida. The Master Gardener Spring Festival waswonderful. The array of flowers and shrubswas spectacular. I was overwhelmed. The nextbig sale will be the crape myrtle sale comingsome time in June. The date has not been setyet. We should have the date for the May WorldNews. I am very pleased with the crape myrtleshrubs I purchased from this sale. Theseshrubs come in a variety of sizes and colorsand are well suited for our area.Have you been to Devils Millhopper GeologicalState Park? This is a great place tobring your visitors from up north. The parkis located two miles northwest of Gainesvilleon Millhopper Road, off State Road 232.
