Born in Bay City, Mich.,she met her husband, Norm, on a blind date.They married before he graduated from collegeand were blessed with their first son. Ajob offer with Alcoa led the Wileys to Tennesseewhere another son was born. A job transfertook them on to Davenport, Iowa, where theironly daughter was born on the coldest and iciestday of the year. Mary Jo says this daughter“quickly warmed up the Wiley household withher sweet personality.” Shortly after her birth,another job transfer took the family to Troy,Ohio. Here their third son was born. (Doesanyone see a pattern here?) It is in Ohio wherethe family spent many happy years, and MaryJo went to work there for a local camera store.She spent all of her earnings on photographicequipment and professes, “It was a good thingI didn’t work for a jewelry store!”The next move was to Pittsburgh and life ina big city. Here Mary Jo worked the temporaryjob circuit because it was a good fit for thebusy schedules of four growing children stillat home. She was assigned to a different companyevery few weeks. Some of her diverseemployment included typing communicationsin French, a short spurt at Westinghouse in humanresources, and an assignment in the lawdepartment at Rockwell Industries. Mary Joeventually took a permanent position with thecompany responsible for constructing manyof the buildings in downtown Pittsburgh.Then, it was moving day again, this timeto Sydney, Ohio. The children were beginningcollege, and Mary Jo began a new career as amedical transcriptionist in a surgeon’s office.Five years later Mary Jo and Norm were backin Davenport. Mary Jo continued her medicaltranscription career from home until 2001when both she and Norm retired. They purchaseda truck and a fifth wheel trailer and “hitthe road” for Indiana, Ohio and Pennsylvanialocations where their children had settled.While looking for a winter escape, theyconsidered the Carolinas and also had visitedOcala often because it was the home of MaryJo’s parents. Now, her dad had begun a longsufferingillness and her mother needed helpand support. So, in 2003, Mary Jo and Normbought a villa here at On Top of the World.Her mom lives next door, and her dad is currentlyin a nursing home.In addition to holding the office of presidentof LadyBirds, Mary Jo has been an avidquilter for the past 20 years. She also enjoysknitting and reading and will forever be creditedfor the successful undertaking of the firstLadyBirds’ cookbook, “LadyBirds and FriendsFavorite Recipes.” A job very well done, MaryJo. Thanks for sharing this slice of your lifewith us. GermanAmerican ClubRuth FelschowAt our last meeting, we welcomed Joe Reinsas a new member.Our upcoming boat ride at Stumpknocker’swas discussed and a preliminary date of May3 was picked. Final information will be announcedat the April meeting.We received some late contributions for theMarion Hospice and the total donation fromour club came to $135. We all enjoyed a potluckdinner. Thank you to all members whohelped to make this a delicious meal.For the next meeting a game night withlight refreshments is planned. It will be onApril 10 at 6:30 p.m. in Suite D and E at theArbor Conference Center. Our club is open toal residents of On Top of the World. For informationcall Ernie Liebow at 854-5679. SPCAGenevieve MallardiA donation of $450 was given to severalcounties and a shelter for the care of pets affectedby the tornadoes.Leo Richards, who is on the Marion Countytask force, informed us of the caring andimprovements of the animals at the MarionCounty Animal Control Center. He also stateda new shelter is on the way to us in the nearfuture.In April your S.P.C.A. will once again be atthe Rags to Riches sale with their coffee anddoughnuts and 50/50 chances. If you haven’thad an opportunity to dig in to one of ourdoughnuts, now’s your chance. You are trulymissing something.In May, Mr. Ralph Mills will speak on thetopic “Guide dogs walking with the Blind.”June will be our last meeting for the summerand we will close with a short meetingand a picnic.There will be no meetings in July and Augustbut we will be available for anyone whoneeds us.
