An accurateway to think of the swing is “the backswingcoils from the top to the bottom of the body, while the forward swing begins from bottomto top.”In attempting to hit the ball hard and gaindistance, the average golfer tries to swing fastwith the arms and hands. That’s where thetrouble begins! More shaft speed can be generatedif the golfer allows the muscles of thetorso to be involved.Candler HillsGolf ClubRoss KuntzHandicapCommitteePatricia K. Del VacchioWhat a beautiful spring/summer On Top ofthe World day for our March Shamble. I hadthe opportunity to play with a very speciallady, Harriet Brower, and she plays a straight, consistent game of golf. I met two new gentlemen,Mike Drabicki and Joe Rappa, and theywere definitely assets to the team. We all knowthe nice thing about these scrambles is we allcontribute somewhere. When someone can’tsomeone else can.I find many golfers focus on trying to hitthe ball rather than swing the club. The “hitting”thought tends to create more of a choppingmotion to the ball rather than a swingingmotion through impact. As mentioned earlier, the lower body iswhat should be starting the forward swing.First, the target heel should be planted, thenthe knees begin to transfer the weight to thetarget leg. This will then trigger the hips torotate through towards the target. An exerciseI like to use with my students is to have thegolfer place a golf ball in the front pocket ofthe rear side (right front pocket for right handers, the left pocket for lefties.) As you swingthrough, the ball should finish over the bigtoe of the target foot. This gives you a task toperform rather than thinking about too manysteps. The shoulders and the arms then becomeinvolved in the forward swing motion. If the golfer begins the forward swing withthe lower body, the arms and hands will automaticallydrop the club into position withoutthe golfer trying to manipulate the golf club.I like to think of the arms and club staying infront of my chest as I enter the impact zone.Once contact is made with the ball, it is imperativethe golfer continues to swing throughuntil the belt buckle, rear knee and shoelacesare pointing to the target. Also be sure the buttend of the club is also pointed to the target.Focusing on a solid finish position will oftentimes create a much more fluid and completeswing rather than attempting to overthink specific positions of the swing. Pictureand rehearse the finish position you desire, then step up, swing and repeat! Here we are approaching spring with golfin full bloom. The number of rounds playedthus far this season has drastically improvedover last season. It was a great event with some terrificmatches, many going to sudden death.Everyone involved had a great time, so if youmissed it this year plan to enter next year. The next big event will be the CHMGA ClubChampionship. It will be a two-day event onApril 24 and 25. If there are sufficient entrants, the play will be flighted. There will bea dinner following play on the second day. There will be a modest entry fee similar to thePresident’s Cup. If you playway; you can improve your lie one club lengthon either side of the ball.Ground under repair: there has been someconfusion how to handle the ground underrepair on Links No. 12 and 13 because of theinstallation of the new cart paths. This areais to the right of the new cart paths. Pleasebe aware that if you hit the ball far into thewoody area to the right and not on the groundunder repair area you do not get a free drop.Until the area is landscaped and smoothedout you are entitled to a free drop out of thisarea; your closest relief will probably be to theleft of the cart path. The way you take this relief: go to yourclosest relief not closer to the hole, take astance with the club you would use for yournext shot, then a club length from there, dropthe ball and wherever it finishes that’s whereyou play the ball from. If you get the right hillthe ball could roll several feet into the fairwayand that’s where you would play from. That’show you take a free drop according to USGArules. Please note that a drop with a penalty is adifferent procedure. While we’re talking about rules, it has cometo my attention, that members, while playingNo. 9 on Tortoise and Hare and hitting theball to the right into the red stake area havelifted their ball out of that area and taken afree drop. This is a lateral hazard and thereis no free drop out of this area, also you arenot allowed to ground your club. If you arethe captain that day you are required to call apenalty on this person if that’s what they do.This keeps the event fair for everyone.I can see the tee sheet and the hole listings. Thanks to Jeff McDonald he has had installednew glass that can be seen through on bothsides of our bulletin board.
