They aren’tvery big; they are about 200 pages each, giveor take a few. They are in the fiction section, down near the floor. It would be so easy toignore them and I almost did.Last year my friend, Barbara, gave me bookNo. 1 of the series. It sat on my table forweeks, and all the while Barbara kept pesteringme to read it. Her enthusiasm was NOTinfectious! I really wasn’t interested in readinga fiction about some little woman in Botswanawho starts a detective agency. Whoever heardof such a thing!Fortunately, Barbara’s persistence overcamemy pre-judging of this little jewel. Afterreading the first one I made the trip up Highway200 to Barnes & Noble to purchase theentire series, not once but twice. I wanted togive the series to my daughter for Christmas.Alexander McCall Smith writes the seriesI’m talking about. I had never heard of him beforebut I will seek out his books from now on.Smith is a Scotsman who was born in Zimbabwe, educated in Scotland, and then returnedto Africa where he taught law at the Universityof Botswana for many years. He and his wifenow live in Scotland.Southern ClubCharlotte HancockMarch is here and it is time to celebrateSt Patrick’s Day. The Southern Club decidedto have corned beef and cabbage with potatoes, carrots and onions. Our own head chef,Ed Beck, cooked eight briskets; Jean Monroe, two; Charlotte Hancock, two; and Edith Owens, two. Ed Beck furnished the cabbage andcarrots. They were delicious and truly straightfrom the garden of Ed Beck. The other members brought side dishesthat complimented the corned beef and everyonehad a great meal. We thank you each andeveryone for your contribution to this meal. Itwas so good we may do it again sometime.Just a reminder to all our members thatelection time is coming. Why not jump in withboth feet and become an officer or chairmanand help the club move forward and have agreat time. This is a way to meet the membersof the club and, who knows, they may be yourneighbor. The Steel Drums are truly “Amazzing.” I amsorry if you missed their performance; it washot dog lady, each other), murals, the paintedhorses, etc. It is such a wonderful place totake photos — we’ll have to do it again alongwith another trip to the zoo!On March 14, a group went to Stumpknocker’sfor an early dinner and a river cruise withCapt. Mma Precious Ramotswe is the main characterin the series. Don’t be intimidated byher last name because these books are fullof names you won’t be able to pronounce butthat won’t distract from the message of thestories. Precious will capture your heart andteach you all the little lessons in life that wehave either taken for granted or forgotten. While solving cases at her “No. 1 Ladies’Detective Agency,” Precious contemplatessuch issues as patriotism. She loves her countryand sees beauty everywhere. Through hereyes, you will see a part of Africa that no travelagency can show you.The profound way Precious considers peopleand relationships is both witty and touching. For a person who has not received a highereducation, she is very wise and steadfast inher beliefs. She has a calming personality andis someone you would love to sit with whilesipping red bush tea.The main story is not the crimes she solvesbut the way she solves them. Although thebooks are fiction and have an element of mysteryto them, I consider them to be subtle lessonsin philosophy.Smith has written seven books about MmaPrecious Ramotswe and the titles are: “TheNo. 1 Ladies’ Detective Agency,” “Tears of theGiraffe,” “Morality for Beautiful Girls,” “TheKalahari Typing School for Men,” “The FullCupboard of Life,” “In the Company of CheerfulLadies” and “Blue Shoes and Happiness.”Book number 8 is being released in Marchof this year and it is titled “The Good Husbandof Zebra Drive.” one of their best. April 2007 The World News® 17Stephanie’s Computer Tip for AprilA Cautionary Note about AutorespondersHave you ever sent an e-mail to somebody and immediatelyreceived back an automatically generatedvery standard message such as: “I’m out of the officeor on vacation until ABC date,” or something similar? They are popularly used by many but here are somereasons why NOT to use them. You have no control of who receives your automaticgenerated response. Anyone who e-mails youwill receive your response — spammers, advertisers,x-rated e-mailers, goofy stuff, and anything else thatslips into your inbox. By sending that auto responseyou instantly confirm to the immediate universe thatyour e-mail address is valid. As a result the amount ofyour junk e-mail may increase exponentially becauseyour “valid” e-mail address is often quickly sold toother spammers at a premium price. That’s the bettercase scenario. It can be lots worse …Automatic responses can in fact acknowledge something that you in fact do notwant — some of which you can’t cancel without actually canceling your e-mail address.Sometimes these messages end up going to invalid e-mail addresses which thenbounce around on your Internet Provider’s server which is a big “NO-NO” and dependingupon the circumstances can be grounds for immediate account termination. Even“valid reply” e-mail addresses may have autoresponders which can create automaticmessages back and forth between your computer and theirs all day long — anotherbig “NO-NO” and grounds for account termination. As far as Internet safety goes it is not a good idea to let the immediate universeknow you will not be at home or that your dwelling will be vacant. Many individualshave been victimized while out of town thanks to an automatic response; e-mail addressesare in many databases that have real physical address information as well.Consider e-mailing directly those who need to know you will be out of town. Andremember if you are e-mailing more than one e-mail address; e-mail the message TOyou and BCC everyoneelse!BY STEPHANIE ROHDEThis tip brought to you by End The Clutter ETCPlease use any and all information at your own risk.www.endtheclutter.com or www.lulu.com/endtheclutterFamily Owned & OperatedWe have proudly served manyof your neighbors, and look forward to making youthe next satisfied customer!NEW LARGER PRODUCTION FACILITYTO SERVE YOU BETTER!NOW AVAILABLE2½", 3½", and 4½"Louvers In Custom Shutters.
