Thanks to:S.T.A.G.E.Stratagies Towards Achieving Girl EmpowermentRecent crime statistics from Statistics Canadashow an increase in violent offences with femalesbetween the ages of 12 and 17. This holds true inour own local community. In discussions withthe agency’s police and court partners it wasdecided the creation of a program focusing onthe factors behind this aggressivebehaviour and other female-related issues was needed. It hasbecome clear that the treatmentprograms and interventions usedfor aggressive adolescent boys wasnot necessarily the best answer foraggressive girls. It has also beennoted that young women are morelikely to show a positive impact ingroups that are specific to theirgender, cover specific unique issuesand are led by female facilitators. Our modelwas developed based in the work of Dr. AlanLeschied (2002). After several pilot programs, wenow regularly offer the STAGE Program in ourcommunity.57girls served inSarnia LambtonSome of the topics include relational aggression,body image, media messages and safety. Theprogram is provided to a maximum of 12 youngwomen per session which is held one night perweek for 10 weeks.One hundred percent of the young girlsattending the STAGE program agreethat they deal with relational aggressionand body image pressures on a dailybasis. At Rebound we offer supportand a safe environment to problemsolve and talk while using skills practiceexercises, such as behaviour rehearsalsto ensure the youth are confident withtheir newly learned skills.In 2008, the program was created and designedthrough a generous $30,000 grant from LibroFinancial. STAGE has become one of Rebound’smost successful outcome programs.
