TAGTools for Attaining GrowthSarnia Lambton Rebound has always prided itself onbeing involved in the community and recognizingwhen there is a gap in service. We strive to be creativein addressing those needs. In September 2011,Rebound was fortunate to receive a Venture Grantfrom the United Way to fund our newest program TAG.TAG is a program designed to target boys ages 8-11who are dealing a variety of issues such asbullying, aggression, friendships, teamworkand respect. The program was developedas we recognized that there was a gap inour community for this age range.When a youth is 12 years of age they canbe criminally charged, however, whathappens to those youth under 12 years ofage who may get involved with the police?If a youth under 12 is having trouble withthe police, at school, or at home-parents,teachers, and police have the option ofreferring to TAG.TAG is geared specifically towards boys. In receivingfeedback from the community we were informed thatthere are more options for latency aged girls than forsame aged boys. TAG uses a variety of tools in order to18 youthparticipated inour programkeep the lessons moving at a fast pace and the lessonsare very interactive and hands on. The program wasdesigned to target their mental and physical needs.For boys, they need to be focused, engaged, andactive. TAG accomplishes this task. There are games,activities, video clips and behavior rehearsals used inorder for the youth to fully understand the materialpresented. This allows them to practicethe skills that they are learning.TAG is facilitated by both male and femalecoaches as research shows that boysrespond better when there are both maleand female facilitators. The program isprovided to a maximum of 8 youth persession and is held once a week for a 10week period.Rebound has successfully run 4 sessions atour facility, one session in a school, anda session at our neighbouring communityof Aamjiwnaang. Rebound PresentsTheatre ProgramIt was determined after Rebound’s secondtheatre production in the summer of 2011 that thetalent of Sarnia’s children and youth is limitless.Everything about this show was larger than life.Only our amazingly skilled “Mr. Director”, RichardTeskey, would ever dream of tackling a showas incredible as, “Beauty and the Beast”. Hisvision included a cast of 40 youth. That numberwas increased to 60 after auditioning over 120amazing youth!This challenging production included a massiveset, extravagant costumes, magical props andmind-boggling special effects. There were daysthat we were not sure we would ever be ableto bring Richard’s vision to life. In true Reboundspirit, the volunteers and staff pulled togetherand we did it! The cast and crew enjoyed everyminute of the roller coaster ride, which endedwith everyone asking what production we wereplanning for next year.At the Cast Party, through the smiles, laughterand lots of tears, we realized that this was morethan just a show. We brought 80 youth togetherfrom different social groups, schools andneighborhoods to have them work together toreach a common goal.
