The Huachuca RegimentsThere are four regiments that I would like to follow through the Spanish-American Warexperience. These particular units were selected because they were in the thick of the fight inCuba, they all had in common the distinction of being the U.S. Army’s only African-Americanregular regiments, and because they would all call Fort Huachuca home for a considerable periodin their histories. They are the 24 th and 25 th Infantry and 9 th and 10 th Cavalry regiments.The 24th Infantry, with the citizens of Salt Lake City paying them tribute, left Fort Douglas,Utah, and traveled by rail to Chickamauga Park, Georgia, on 24 April and arrived in Tampa aweek later. In the fighting before the San Juan Heights, it took a heavy fire while in its positionjust below the junction of the Agusdores and San Juan Rivers while in support of the 13thInfantry. It then hurried forward to fill gaps in the line, moving up the hill with the 6th, 16th and13th Infantry regiments.
