O-8 DISCOVERY BAY REEFS: ARE THEY RECOVERING?COMPARISON WITH PAST STUDIESLeandra Cho and Jeremy WoodleyCentre for Marine SciencesThe coral reefs of Discovery Bay have suffered from large scale degradations since 1980 whichresulted in a decline of coral diversity and abundance. Phase shifts in community structure resultedin macroalga dominated reefs (Liddell & Ohlhorst, 1992; Andres & Witman, 1995; Hughes, 1994).The changes are believed to have been induced by decades of increasing chronic disturbance fromterrestrial runoff and overfishing followed by acute catastrophic events, with the advent of HurricaneAllen in 1980 and the mass mortality of the herbivorous sea-urchin Diadema antillarum. The resultof such extensive disturbance in a relatively short period of time resulted in further decline of reefs.Studies from the last 15 years showed a decline in coral cover from 30-60% in 1977, to 5-25% in1984 after Diadema die-off, to £5% coverage above depths of 30m in 1992. Macroalga coverincreased from 5% to 79%.The study area covered 10km of the coastline east of Rio Bueno to the west of Pear Tree River. Atotal of 27 sites was identified to investigate variation in coral abundance and diversity betweendifferent localities, and to determine if reported coral cover of
