The ArchivesThis year marked the fortieth anniversary of theopening of the Hutchins Junior School at SandyBay on the sixth of April, 1957. For a School likeHutchins, with such a long history, anniversaries of onekind or another are a relatively frequent occurrence, andthey tend to slip by without too much fuss. The moveto Sandy Bay, however, marked a turning point in theSchool's history and deserves some attention.Significantly, it was the first break with the MacquarieStreet campus, one that had served the School so wellfor more than a hundred years. The idea of looking for an alternative site for a Schoolcampus was not a new one. Even before the acquisitionof land for the Junior School and the later negotiationswith the Council for the Queenborough Cemetery site,a suggestion had been made about the suitability of landin Sandy Bay. As early as 1917, J.w. Bethune suggestedthe School might move to Sandy Bay, to the site nowoccupied by the university. His proposal, forty yearsahead of its time, was rejected. J.W. Bethune, a one-timeBoard member and Old Boy, entered the School inFebruary, 1885, then went on to Cambridge. ButBethune is probably best known as the author of theHutchins School Song, writing it in 1916, while servingas Army Chaplain and Captain at the Claremont Camp. The 'new' Tunior School under construction, 1956Before the Junior School was built at Sandy Bay, planshad been made in the late 1940s, which would see partof the School, at least, moved to a site at Berriedale. An announcement to that effect was made on speechnight in 1949, by the Chairman of the Board, F.H. Foster. The School had purchased a 364 acre property betweenBerriedale and Claremont. After a survey proved onceand for all the unsuitability of the site, however, theland was later sold and the funds used to offset thecost of the new Junior School already in use.Two years after the opening of the building in SandyBay, the then Chairman of the Board, George Hodgson, approached the Council with the proposal of swappingpart of Queenborough Cemetery for the School's ChristCollege Grounds. The process was long and caused agood deal of debate in the community. After the pollconducted in May of 1960 went in the School's favour, the way was then open for Hutchins to once again havea combined campus, this time in Sandy Bay. With therepudiation of the Cemetery, building of the futureSenior School finally began in 1963. In 1965, Hutchinsmade its final break from Macquarie Street. This movewould end almost one hundred and twenty years ofschooling at the old campus, and mark the beginningof a new future in Sandy Bay.Mr P. LucasSchool ArchivistThe Hutchins School Web SiteAt the start of 1997, the all-student HutchinsWeb Site Committee was formed and set thetask of creating a School web site. In previousyears, work on the web site had begun, but due to aninitial lack of facilities no substantial work wascompleted. As a result, the site had to be created fromscratch and followed the basic guidelines laid down bythe Headmaster. The web site itself is divided into seven sections: SchoolProfile, Enrolment, Curriculum, Technology, Staff,Students and The Hutchins Community. The profilesection contains information about the School itself, including its history, its traditions and some of itsfeatures. The enrolment section will allow prospectiveparents to enrol their sons directly into Hutchins..However, this feature will remain unavailable untilsome time in 1998. The staff and students sectionsprovide space for material to be published by staff andstudents in the School. It is also envisaged that thestaff section will have profiles of staff members. Thetechnology section deals with the use of informationtechnology in the School, including the facilities andthe general use of computers in the curriculum. Thecurriculum section is the largest section of the site, having much information on the courses available atHutchins, including co-curricula opportunities. Finally, the community section provides information on theremainder of the School community, including Hutchinsrelated organisations such as cooperating schools. Thesesections of the web site are indexed in a search engine tomake it easy for viewers to find specific information. Arecent addition of an Internet search page which allowssearches to be made on multiple search engines directlyfrom the Hutchins Web Site is a further useful feature ofthe site.Mr Moore was the committee coordinator, planning thesite and organising the weekly committee meetings, while also creating the showcase Art, Craft and DesignFaculty page. Azman Haroon held the position ofchairman, providing an important liaison between thecommittee, the students and staff. The committee itselfconsisted of Adam Eijdenberg, Tim Pitman, MatthewWilliams, Stephen Catchpole, David Townsend, NickSonneveld and myself, as site manager. Furtherassistance was provided by Andrew Chung who createdthe popular rotating logo animation. The committee is constantly looking for content to bepublished on the site and extends an invitation to allmembers of the Hutchins community who can prOVideappropriate material.
