In Term 1 School House invited the Collegiate Year 8girls over for a barbeque. This was a great socialoccassion where we got the chance to mix with the girlsinformally. A few of our group were a little shy at first, but by the end of lunch, they were conducting guidedtours around the school.Another highlight in the year has been our strongshowing in the arm-wrestling finals with strong effortsby Sam Waley and George Papoutsakis. We alsodominated the student and staff trivia quizzes. The BoatRace at the end of Term 1 was another highlight eventhough not one Year 8 crew actually finished, it will godown in the history books as great fun. Some of the lighter moments have been when Corey gota new blazer, when Sam Waley was caught kissing at theFahan social by his dad, and all the other wild storieswhich aren't suitable to publish!Apart from all the sport, community service andacademic achievements, School House has managed tosurvive Year 8 with strong and cohesive House spirit. We have kept striving for excellence through mateship,a strong sense of humour and good guidance. We sincerely thank our tutors, Mr Brain and MrKingston for a memorable year. We wish Mr Brain,in particular, all the best as he leaves Hutchins.losh Tomlin,Damen Holmes,Robert Shoobridge and Mr KingstonStephens HouseSome of the activities undert by 8GSt this year havebeen: model boats made out of cardboard for a race at theend of Term 1. Our boat came second; lots of cake stallsto raise money for the Lenten Appeal; plenty of quietreading - Mr Stevens believed it is good for us to quietendown and pracrtise our reading; making our skateboarddecks by laminating up veneers in a mould using PVAGlue; trying to make 'flivers' which are simple flyingmachines, like a hand powered helicopter - harder thanit first appears!; a house BBQ with the Year 11 Stephensboys - lots of sausages and cake, although some of thesausages seemed to have been cremated rather thancooked; House debating in week 7 - the topic was 'Thatwe learn more out of school than in it' -lots ofinteresting arguments.Highlights for the year in 8ADo's tutor group have been:trips to McDonald's; a BBQ with the Collegiate girls;when Miss Donnelly shouted us a sundae at Macca's; theday Miss Donnelly could not stop laughing; raising lotsof money for needy causes; making jelly for the MSSociety and selling it in a record of S minutes; activitieswith the Collegiate girls, especially a game of football;Stephens winning just about everything, includingunderwater hockey, cross-country, swimming, and tug-owar;when Paddy set fire to a piece of paper doing somecandle decorating at Easter time; when Jo Aston returneda burnt chip at McDonald's and got a replacement chipin its own paper bag!; Mr French's stories in P.E.; Burgo'sbirds' nests; and the Sale of the Century game at theMiddle School assembly.Famous QuotesTo Felix Blackler from Mr Stevens: 'Now, son.'Mark Kramer to Mark Kramer: 'I'm the chair person.'James Troon to others: 'I'll get stroppy now:'Thorold HouseThorold House has had a positive and constructive yearwith many group and individual achievements. Hereare a few highlights illustrating strong individual effortsmade by Thorold boys both in sport and school work:Jeremy Inglis being picked to represent the State in anUIS division for hockey; Greg Irons being asked torepresent the School on a trip to University School,Cleveland, Ohio, USA; Ian Pang winning a medal in theAustralian Schools Science competition; and AlexanderPiekutowski winning the Middle School Tennischampionship. As well as the individual achievements, Thorold Houseas a whole has had many notable successes, a few ofthese being strong efforts at both the Middle Schoolswimming carnival and athletics, as well as running acalze stall and video entertainment in Term 1 for charity.Thorold has supported many fund raisers, especiallyCamp Quality in Term 3.Thorold House has also had a fun-filled and productiveyear. The boys had many comments and reflections onthe year but we all agree that we had a positive andproductive year as a House, but it has not always beensmooth sailing. We have had to bind together throughdifficult times and help each otheralong the way.Memorable highlights include:our 'strong arm', Joey McKibben, winning the Middle School armwrestling; Tom Crawford in theTasmanian Rugby Team; LukeLamont with a merit-winningperformance in the HobartEisteddfod; and Ben Tumneywinning a place in the shortstory competition. Two other activities whichcomplemented our sporting andacademic pursuits were makingskateboard decks in 8CBe, and theplay, Bruce and the Bean Stalk,by 8KMo.As Thorold House captain it hasbeen my job to look after Thoroldfunctions and the Thorold boys, but I am not the only captain therewas: Hugo Brettingham-Moore andGreg Irons were captain and vicecaptainof the swimming carnivalin Term I, and Greg and Hugoonce again were captain and vicecaptainin the athletics carnivalin Term 3.We look forward to moving intothe Senior School and continuingthe Thorold traditions. I wouldlike to thank Mr Moore andMr Berndt for being the ThoroldHouse tutors for 1997.Stag-a-raa!Tim Green, 8KMoThorold House Captain--65Patrick Durkin and Tom Crawford
