JUNIORSCHOOLThe Head of Junior SchoolWhen asked what two things are expected of aHutchins boy I think most respond wIth MrBrammall's message of 'Join in and do yourbest.' Indeed in 1997 they have followed his direction. It has been a very busy, exciting and eventful year.Little boys, and those not so little, have lots of energyand a keenness to explore and discover. They possessa thirst for learning and a desire to do better. Thesequalities have been very evident as they have tackledthe many experiences, in and outside the classroom, designed to stimulate, teach and challenge every boy.I hope each has been rewarded in his own way and canfeel pride and a deep sense of satisfaction in having'done his best.'Space is too limited here to mention all that hashappened, but here are some highlights. The Preparatory DepartmentAmong the many excursions enjoyed were to theNautical exhibition at the museum, Talune WildlifePark, autumn and spring visits to the Royal HobartBotanical Gardens, Cascade Gardens with Collegiate,Banjo's Bakery, the Whale exhibition and the RoyalHobart Show. The boys' talents were often on display ina variety of ways. Their contributions to our JuniorSchool Assemblies always add a lot of colour and fun, ranging from a wonderful Bookweek Assembly tobudding actors in the Year 2 plays. Old MacDonald andKaleidoscope of Books were other wonderful activities.Prep students have participated very successfully inEisteddfods, winning many sections and gaining awardsin others. Their Science talents came to the fore in theirefforts at the Tasmanian Science Talent Search. Many visitors assist in the teaching and learningprogram offered. These include a very valuable resourceof mums and dads who contribute enormously and Ithank them for their efforts. Fireman Paul, PolicemanPearce and Doctor Middleton were great ambassadors fortheir profession and the boys learnt a lot. The work doneby older boys, particularly with story writing andoutdoor games, added a further dimension. The Primary SchoolThe boys in Years 3 to 6 had an equally stimulatingand variety filled year. One of the highlights was theproduction of Out of Time, a most successful videoproduced under the direction of Mr Don Gay.Many sporting events were held. Outdoor educationcamps at Southport, Dysart, Port Arthur and MariaIsland challenged the boys and provided furtherstimulation. Year 5 enjoyed exchanges with LauncestonGrammar, and Year 6 with Ivanhoe Grammar(Melbourne), including two days in Canberra.Academically, the boys continued to perform strongly, achieving many awards in National and Statecompetitions, a highlight being the winning of theTasmanian Primary School Maths Relay for the secondsuccessive year. The boys' musical talents were againrecognised with many fine performances, including the5/6 choir winning the Rowallan Trophy for the bestchoir in any section at the Hobart Eisteddfod. Thedevelopment of information technology skills remainsan important focus. This work has been enhanced bylarge screen computers in each classroom. The staff have worked tirelessly and very professionallyto provide a stimulating and challenging program. MissRebecca Clemons joined the staff as a teacher of Year 6,Mr Bob Brewster once again was with us in Term 3 andMrs Caroline McCreary replaced Mr Lance Morrisbywho took long service leave in Term 3.Mr Howard Kelly was farewelled in August to spendthe remainder of the year in the USA. From his regularcorrespondence it appears he and his family are havinga great time.I have enjoyed my time inMr Kelly's chair. It has beena very busy period, bothchallenging and rewarding. The support from the boys, parents and Junior School staffhas been very much appreciated.Mr Derek WoolleyActing Head of Tunior School-26Junior School Staff (L-R): Mrs rSmith,Mrs A.
