7.3 Grinders (continued)Hazard or riskThe poor location of grinders and their use byuntrained operators increase the risk of accidentand injury.Risk of electrical leads and cables being cut ordamaged; leads and cables being tripping hazards.Risk controlThe grinder must be in a secure, properly lit,enclosed space and securely anchored in position.Unsecured grinders with power leads should notbe permitted in the shed.All grinding work should be done by a properlyskilled and trained person. This includes not onlyall grinding but all repairs and maintenance such aschanging emery cloths. Alternatively, the employermay change the emery cloths.Electrical leads and cables need to be properlyrouted to eliminate any risk of them being cut ordamaged or being tripping hazards.This grinder is in a secure, properly lit space and wellanchored. Protective glasses are being used as per the signbehind the grinder. The grinder is guarded. Note the fireextinguisher.This grinder is isolated in a well lit area and sits behinda perspex partition. 7.4 Wool pressesHazard or riskThe design of some wool presses makes it possiblefor body parts to become entrapped.Injuries from hydraulic hoses that have burst underpressure can result in serious burns or penetrationinjuries from hydraulic fluid.Presses are sometimes operated by untrained andunskilled persons.A safety stop mechanism to avoid entrapment isnot present.There is no failsafe mechanism if the platen supportsystem fails while the platen is in the top position.Electrical hazardsRisk controlThe clearance between the front of the platen andthe side of the bale holding frame should be atleast 100 mm.Ensure that wool presses are fitted with a functioninginterlocking door mechanism which stops the pressif the doors are not fully closed or a trip bar oremergency stop is fitted.Hydraulic lines should be inspected beforeoperation and worn lines should be replaced.Anyone using a press must be properly trained andskilled in its use.Powered wool presses should have a safety stopmechanism. A readily accessible trip bar should stopoperation of the press if the bar is “tripped” by anoperator or bystander. A stop button or bar that canbe operated by the knee enables the operator to stopthe press without using hands or arms.A failsafe system must be provided to prevent theplaten from falling when it is in the top position.Electrical leads and cables need to be properlysecured and clear of any moving parts such as theram, monkey, doors and wheels.Check wool presses for protrusions and sharp edgesbefore operation and repair if necessary.Ensure the press is located so that it there is nointerference between the operation of the press andother work being carried out nearby.This well used press has had anemergency stop button fitted that canbe operated by hand or by the knee.The electrical cabling is kept safely outof the way by suspending it from above.Health & Safety in Shearing 27
