8 Work in the shearing shedOther relevant hazards, risks and risk control measureshave already been addressed in previous sections.8.1 PenningHazard or riskDue to the nature of penning up, the major risksof injury include slips, trips and falls due to eithercontact with sheep or pen barriers, butting bysheep, crushing of fingers, cuts from protrudingor sharp objects and dog bites.Risk controlRedesign pens and gates to promote stock flow,reducing the requirement to “push” sheep into thefilling pen.Repair or remove protrusions and sharp objectsin the pens before use.Battens normally run cross ways to stop light comingthrough but can make penning up difficult. In thecatching pens this may have to be considereddepending on the height of the catching pen aboveground level.
