Aquatics<strong>Des</strong> <strong>Plaines</strong> <strong>Park</strong> <strong>District</strong> Learn to Swim ProgramsMin/max: 6/10Parent/Tot • Ages 6 month–3 yearsBasic water adjustment and swimmingskills are introduced through songs andgames. The primary focus of this class isto make your child feel comfortable in thewater with you.Preschool • Ages 3–5 yearsWe offer two levels of our popularpreschool swim program. Parents are notin the water during these classes. Childrenwill not be moved to Level 1 until they turn6 years old.Preschool 1This program is geared toward childrenwho have no previous experience and/orare apprehensive in the water. Throughsongs and games our instructors introduceyour child to the fun world of swimming.Preschool 2This program is best suited to children whohave previous swimming experience andhave no fear of the water. Basic swimmingskills are incorporated through songs andgames, and Level 1 skills are introduced.Level 1: Introduction to Water SkillsLevel 1 helps students feel comfortable inthe water using basic swimming and watersafety skills.Level 2: Fundamental Aquatic SkillsThis class introduces the basics ofswimming including floating withoutsupport, combined arm and leg action, andforward motion.Level 3: Stroke DevelopmentBuilding on the basics from Level 2,students learn coordination of the frontand back crawl, introduction to butterfly,treading water, and beginning head firstentry.Level 4: Stroke ImprovementLevel 4 helps to develop confidence in thestrokes learned in previous levels, improvestrokes, and increase endurance. Basics ofturning at the wall are introduced.Level 5: Stroke RefinementParticipants refine their performance ofall the stokes—front crawl, back crawl,butterfly, breaststroke, elementarybackstroke, and sidestroke—and increasetheir distance. Flip turns on the front andback are introduced.Level 6: Swimming and Skill Proficiency Inthis level, swimmers continue to refine all sixstrokes so students swim them with ease,efficiency, power, and smoothness overgreater distances.Semi-Private Swim LessonsDoes your swimmer need a little extra helpmoving on the next level, or do they preferworking in a small group environment? Whynot give semi-private lessons a try? Semi-Private swim lessons provide focus andencouragement to help your swimmer graspthe concept of swimming. Participant toinstructor ratio will be 2:1.Chippewa Pool, Monday/Wednesday,Tuesdays/Thursdays or SaturdaysJunior LifeguardsAges 13–16Want to know what it takes to be aLifeguard? Join us at Chippewa Pool for aweek long class where you can use rescuetubes, jump from lifeguard chairs andlearn how to react in emergency aquaticsituations! At the completion of thiscourse, successful lifeguard candidatesare eligible to be fully licensed throughthe popular Jeff Ellis and Associates, Inc.Program. This is used to train our awardwinning <strong>Des</strong> <strong>Plaines</strong> <strong>Park</strong> <strong>District</strong> Staff(Visit www.jellis.com)Course includes water safety andrescue techniques, CPR, First Aid,AED certification, and oxygen supporttraining. Internet access is required tocomplete the book and test portion of thiscourse prior to the class dates.
