Solder ring solutionsThe principle of theYorkshire fittingAt Pegler Yorkshire we are constantly striving to develop jointing solutions that meetthe changing needs of specifiers and installers alike. The Yorkshire potable suite ofintegral solder ring capillary fittings has the solid reputation of an established productrange, and suits a broad spectrum of applications in the domestic, commercial andindustrial sectors. The Yorkshire integralsolder ring jointDuring the manufacture of these precisionmadefittings, a ring of high quality leadfreesolder is positioned in each capillarysocket. When heat is applied, the solder isreleased into the gap between the tube andthe fitting, resulting in a totally sound jointwithout the need to end feed additionalsolder.Advantagesof YorkshireThe major advantage of the Yorkshireintegral solder ring fitting is that theinstaller requires no additional solder. Thisremoves any expensive solder waste andthe need to estimate the quantity requiredfor a secure, reliable joint. Once heated, the appearance of a complete ring of solderaround the mouth of the socket makes itclearly apparent that the joint has beenmade. The range is light and neat, with compactdimensions that are ideal for making useof limited space in ducts and other restrictedareas. Providing that cleaning and fluxingis properly carried out, Yorkshire integralsolder ring fittings can often be installedin locations inaccessible to other fittingtypes. In addition, the fittings’ smoothlines minimise flow restrictions and areunobtrusive on exposed pipelines.DurabilityYorkshire integral solder ring fittings are madefrom copper, gunmetal or a dezincificationresistant alloy (DZR). Their impermeablenature gives excellent protection againstcontaminants that can threaten the domesticwater supply. In addition, copper and itsalloys are recognised as tried and testedplumbing materials on the grounds ofcorrosion resistance. Properly installedsystems can be expected to outlast many ofthe buildings in which they are installed. The product range is versatile, and resultsin a visually pleasing finish. Where bothfunctionality and maximum aesthetic appealare required, for example in bathrooms,a commercial chrome plate finish can bespecified. In addition, a polished qualitychrome plate finish can be manufacturedto special order.Users of Yorkshire integral solder ringfittings can be confident that they arepurchasing an established product witha proven reputation for reliability andquality which spans more than eightyyears. As a market leading company, PeglerYorkshire was the first to incorporatelead-free solder into integral solder ringfittings as standard in 1985.All products across the Yorkshire potablerange are clearly branded with theimprinted YP logo so users have a visibleassurance that no lead is present in thesolder of a Yorkshire installation and thatfittings comply with the requirementsof The Water Supply (Water Fittings)Regulations/Byelaws (Scotland).4

Solder ring solutionsWorking temperaturesand pressuresYorkshire general range fittingsYorkshire integral solder ring fittingscontain a tin/copper lead-free solder (BSEN 29453 Alloy number 23 Sn99Cu1) witha melting range of 227- 235ºC. Jointingtemperatures can be easily reached using aconventional heat source such as a propaneor butane torch. The Yorkshire general rangeis designed for sustained operation at theservice temperatures and pressures shown inTable 1.Yorkshire General High Duty fittingsYorkshire General High Duty fittings aredesigned to joint copper tubes to BS EN1057. However, a GHD installation willachieve maximum performance (shownin Table 3) when used with high dutycopper tube in applications not subject toclassification society requirements. When assembled with copper tube to BS EN1057, the service temperatures and pressuresof Yorkshire General High Duty fittingsare limited by the specification of annealedtube used.Heating components – manifoldsManifolds used in heating systems aresuitable for use up to a maximum workingpressure of 6 bar at 110ºC. Solder ring solutionsSystem design considerationsand tube expansionHere are details of some of the specific design considerations it is important to takeaccount of when designing and installing pipework systems containing Yorkshireintegral solder ring fittings.Thermal movementThermal movement is major considerationwhen designing and installing plumbingand heating systems and should be takeninto account. Pipework systems expand andcontract with changes in temperature. If they are fixed too rigidly and theirmovement restricted the installation willbe subject to stress. Stress concentrationsbetween “fixed points” – typically found atradiators, valves and other fittings – shouldbe avoided wherever possible.Correct anchoringAlways ensure the free length of tube betweenthe branch of the tee and the first anchorpoint (bracket or radiator valve) is longenough to allow normal thermal movement. Not doing this can lead to installation failure.Expansion of copper tubeCopper has a coefficient of linear expansionof 17 x 10 -6 /°C. For example, a 10 metrelength of copper tube carrying hot waterat 60°C will increase in length by almost7mm when heated from 20°C. Assuming thattemperature cycling of the system is 20°C,there will be a continuous cycle of expansionand contraction of 3.4mm.Refer to table (below).Pipeline supportsPipelines should always be assembled so thatthe joints are under neutral or compressivestress. 3InsulationFor all Yorkshire installations, werecommend you adhere to the insulationrequirements for copper tube as specifiedby The Water Supply (Water Fittings)Regulations 1999. These can be downloadedfrom www.hmso.gov.uk.Phenolic foamWhen using rigid phenolic foam (or otherthermal insulation) to lag pipework, always remember to refer to the laggingmanufacturer’s fixing instructions. To avoidthe risk of external corrosion of pipework, the European Phenolic Foam Associationrecommends that such insulation productsbe installed with a moisture barrier, such asDensopaste or a plastic covering applied bythe tube manufacturer. If you need to adda barrier product, we recommend that allYorkshire fittings are fully installed and arecompletely coated before these are applied.Covered pipeworkMaking provision for thermal movementis vital where pipe-work is installed underscreed or plaster, or passes through brick orblockwork. The preferred practice is to passtubes and pipes through sleeves or conduitsor to lay them in ducts surrounded by loose,non-rigid material such as vermiculite orglass wool. For further information, consultthe standard BS 6700.Pipework accessibilityIt’s wise to take advice from the localwater authority when it comes to pipeworkaccessibility.ChemicalsSome contracts may require the use ofproprietary chemicals to cleanse andflush pipework before full commissioning.Yorkshire fittings are compatible with aselection of products – contact us for a list.FluxesYorkshire Flux, Traditional Craftsman’s Fluxand Degussa H high duty flux are subject tothe requirements of the Control of SubstancesHazardous to Health (COSHH) regulations.COSHH sheets are available to download fromour website, www.pegleryorkshire.co.ukSoldering fluxes do not supportmicrobiological growth in potable watersupplies and their residues are non-corrosive.Fluxes prevent oxidisation at the Coppertube during soldering. This allows the moltensolder to ‘wet’ the parent metals, creatinga true metallurgical bond. Efficient fluxesalso ensure that the maximum strength ofthe joint can be achieved by adding thedistribution of the solder over the wholejointing surface.Traditional Craftsman’s Flux maintains itsconsistency over a long period of time andcan be used with all types and sizes of softsolder fittings for applications including gas,and is char-resistant to normal heating levelsof 250ºC.Yorkshire Flux, like Traditional Craftsman’s,Yorkshire Flux will maintain it’s consistencyand can be used with all types and sizes ofsoft solder fittings. However, it must not beused for gas applications.Degussa H ready-mixed paste is for brazingcopper and copper alloys, such as PeglerYorkshire General High Duty fittings.ConnectorsMale connectorsYorkshire male connectors have threads toISO 7/EN 10226-1. Inert jointing compoundsor PTFE tape should be applied to taperthreads and good quality jointing washersshould be used with parallel threadedfittings. Solder ring solutionsYorkshire general rangeinstallation instructionsThe following instructions illustrate just how easy it is to make a Yorkshire integral solderring joint. The fittings use the principle of capillary action to allow solder to fill the gapbetween fitting and tube to form a completely reliable joint. These instructions coverYorkshire general range fittings. Details of how to joint General High Duty fittings canbe found on page 54.Installation tipsBest results are obtained when joints areheated as soon as possible after assembly. After heating and subsequent cooling, flushthe system – preferably with hot water.Ensure adequate ventilation during heating.Any joints not heated during the working dayshould be dismantled, cleaned and refluxedprior to reassembly.PreliminariesSelect the correct size of tube and fittingfor the job. Ensure that both are clean, ingood condition and free from damage andimperfections. If the tube is oval or damageduse a re-rounding tool.Preparation1. Cut the tube square using a rotary tubecutter wherever possible. If a hacksaw is usedto cut the tube, a fine toothed blade shouldbe used.12. Remove any burr from the inside andoutside of the tube ends using a fine toothedfile or a S120 de-burring tool from the XPressaccessories range.23. Clean the inside of the fitting socket andthe outside of the tube with a Yorkshirecleaning pad, fine sandpaper or steel wool.3Jointing1. Using a suitable brush, apply adequate –but not excessive – flux to both the outsidesurface of the tube and the inside surface ofthe fitting socket. Do not use your finger. The reliability of soldered joints is greatlyinfluenced by the type of flux used. Yorkshireflux and Traditional Craftsman’s flux arespecially formulated for jointing copper tubeswith Yorkshire integral solder ring fittings. All fluxes are, to some extent, corrosive, butspecial care should be taken with so-calledself cleaning fluxes. Yorkshire flux is notsuitable for gas applications.12. Insert the tube into the fitting until itreaches the tube stop, then wipe off anyexcess flux. Heat the assembled joint untila complete ring of solder appears at themouth of the fitting.23. Allow the joint to cool withoutdisturbance. Clean the joint generally, wipingoff any external flux residues. This willprevent unsightly stains or (in extreme cases)corrosion of pipework. Flush out the pipework.3Threaded connectorsA good quality jointing washer should beused when installing fittings with parallelconnector threads. Male threaded connectorsfor jointing pipework to boilers, pumpsor backplate elbows have taper male BSPthreads and may require the use of jointingmaterials. A small quantity of inert jointingcompound or PTFE tape should be appliedto the male thread before installing thefittings.Female threaded connectors have internalthreads to BS EN ISO 228:2003 and shouldbe used for general connections from malethreaded fittings to copper pipework.Jointing compounds should comply withBS 6956 Part 5 and be WRAS listed. PTFEtape for water and general applicationsshould comply with BS 7786 and satisfy521 Range overview 2 Product details3 Technical data 4 Installation instructions

Solder ring solutionsChrome platedinstallation instructions4the requirements of BS 6920 Part 1. For gasapplications, PTFE tape should comply withBS EN 751-3:1997 (formerly BS 6974).StopvalvesDuring the soldering operation, stopvalvesshould be half open and a damp cloth wrappedaround the headwork. The headwork ofstopvalves are bonded and sealed toprovide maximum reliability.Slip couplings and teesIf it is necessary to break into existingpipes for repairs or to fit new branches, slipcouplings or tees which have no tube stopsmake the job easier and avoid disturbingthe rest of the system.Adapting imperial to metricwith YorkshireOccasionally a Yorkshire integral solderring fitting may need to be connected to anolder installation where imperial sized coppertube has been used. If this is the case, simply use a Yorkshire imperial to metriccoupling adaptor, one end of which fits onto imperial pipe, and the other on to metricpipe. Adaptors are available in severalcombinations.Unmade endsIf an end of a Yorkshire general range fittingis to remain unmade, a short length ofcorrectly sized, uncleaned tube should beinserted into the end(s) to be left unjointed. This section should be kept cool by wrappinga wet rag around it whilst heating theremaining ends.Taking apart and remakingYorkshire jointsThe re-use of Yorkshire integral solder ringfittings is generally not recommended, asthe joints are difficult to disconnect owingto the intermetallic bonding between thesolder and the copper of the fitting andtube. However, in some situations, jointscan be remade by fluxing the tinned portionof the tube and reinserting this into thefitting. The joint can then be heated andlead-free solder end-fed. If a new tube isto be used, clean and flux the tube beforeassembly. End feed lead-free solder at themouth of the socket after reheating.Using Yorkshire general rangefittings with chrome platedcopper tubeSolder will not bond to chrome plate, meaning the plating needs to be removedfrom copper tube before a joint is made. The same preliminaries and preparationguidelines apply.1. For the distance the tube goes into thefitting, remove the chrome plating usinga coarse emery cloth, followed by finesandpaper or Yorkshire cleaning pad.12. After applying flux, heat the joint in theusual manner.3. Remove any discolouration of thechromium by washing the fitting with soapand warm water immediately after the jointhas cooled.3Local water authorityIt’s wise to take the advice of the LocalWater Authority into account when itcomesto pipework accessibility.Union fittingsYorkshire union fittings have metal-to-metalcone joints. To avoid leaks, care shouldbe taken to protect the jointing facesfrom damage. Use a WRAS listed jointingcompound or apply a sufficient amount ofPTFE tape to obtain completely satisfactoryresults. Tighten the joint with a spanner.System testingWe recommend all systems are thoroughlytested upon completion. In hydraulic basedinstallations the system may be testedto 1.5 times the working pressure of thesystem (see tables on page 48 for data). If higher test pressures are required adviceshould be sought from Pegler Yorkshire. On completion, compressed air pipelinesystems must be properly tested. Thesystem designer and installation contractormust ensure safe methods are selected forsystem testing which will comply with allcurrent Health and Safety regulations. This may include testing compressed airlines with fluids or compressed air at alimited pressure, or a combination. In anyevent we do not recommend the maximumworking pressure of the product beexceeded during this procedure.N.B. The maximum temperature andpressure range in any system is dictated bythe component with the lowest performancerating.1 Range overview 2 Product details3 Technical data 4 Installation instructionswww.pegleryorkshire.co.ukPegler Yorkshire53

Solder ring solutionsGeneral High Dutyinstallation instructionsMaking a YorkshireGeneral High Duty jointThe same preliminaries apply as forYorkshire general range fittings.PreparationThe preparation of Yorkshire General HighDuty fittings differs only slightly to thosefor Yorkshire general range fittings. Detailsof these differences are as follows:1. A hacksaw should be used to cut the tube– a rotary cutter must not be used for thisapplication as it can reduce the diameter ofthe tube ends.2. An alumina based paper or cloth can alsobe used to clean the fitting socket as analternative to a Yorkshire cleaning pad or finesandpaper. Steel wool should not be used.3. General High Duty fittings require theuse of the correct flux. We recommendDegussa “H” ready mixed paste, althoughsatisfactory joints can be made using othersuitable silver brazing alloy fluxes.Silver brazing alloy fluxes must be usedwith care and always in a well ventilatedarea. If powder flux is used, this should be mixedwith clean water and blended into a creamypaste. Mix the required amount of fluxand keep the powder in the container dry, replacing the lid immediately after use.Any excess mixed flux should be discarded.Jointing1. Using a suitable brush, apply adequate –but not excessive – flux to both the outsidesurface of the tube to a length slightly greaterthan the socket depth and the inside surfaceof the fitting socket. Do not use your finger.12. Insert the tube into the fitting until itreaches the tube stop, using a twisting actionto ensure the spread of flux. Ensure thetubes are correctly lined up and adequatelysupported – otherwise distortion or crackingmay occur when at brazing temperature.3. Heat the socket and tube gently usingan oxy/gas, oxy/acetylene or oxy/propanetorch to approximately 700ºC – a visiblered heat in poor daylight. Use a large, soft, neutral or slightly reducing flame, keep thetorch moving, and continue heating until acomplete ring of solder appears around thesocket mouth - this is proof of a sound joint.Continue to heat generally for a few seconds.Repeat this method for each joint in turn.3If the complete ring of solder does notappear on heating, apply additional fluxto the mouth of the socket and end feedthe joint with our N165 (Copper coloured)or N166 (Brass coloured) cadmium-freesilver brazing alloy, or an equivalent to thecompositional requirements of BS EN 1044AG103 (formerly BS 1845 AG14).4. Allow the joint to cool without disturbance.Clean the joint generally, wiping off anyexternal flux residues. Flush out the pipework.4Permanence of GHD jointsJoints made with Yorkshire GeneralHigh Duty fittings should be regarded aspermanent. If the system has to be brokeninto, fittings such as the 11GHD unioncoupling should be installed at appropriatepoints. An alternative is the use of bi-metalEndbraze flanges, in sizes 42mm and 54mm,which will require the end-feeding ofsolder.Disconnecting GHD fittingsThe use of disconnecting fittings allowssections of the installation to be completedon the workbench, avoiding the need to makejoints in difficult places. This prefabricationtechnique is particularly recommended insizes from 22mm to 54mm.GHD union fittingsUnion type fittings such as 11GHD, 65GHDand 69GHD have round nose-to-seal joints.Imperial to metricWhere the layout permits, the mosteconomical way of adapting from imperialto metric is to use the 9GHD.541 Range overview 2 Product details3 Technical data 4 Installation instructions

Solder ring solutionsStopvalves, gate valvesand plugcocks4Yorkshire recognises that different service environments place a variety of demandson pipeline systems. With this in mind, a comprehensive selection of valves to suitboth domestic and commercial requirements, from central heating and hot andcold water services to oil lines, steam and gas installations, have been developed.Valves have either solder ring or threaded ends, with the former assembled withthe same jointing procedure as the Yorkshire integral solder ring fittings.StopvalvesStopvalves are designed for use wherever the flow of hot or cold waterservices needs to be controlled or regulated. Yorkshire stopvalves areavailable in sizes from 15mm to 54mm, and are suitable for use withcopper tube to BS EN 1057.All have gunmetal bodies, with gunmetal, DZR or duplex brassheadworks, and are available with combined draincocks andalternative headworks, including Lockshield and easy clean covers.Lockshield stopvalves can be used where operational access needs tobe restricted, for instance on exposed pipe runs. Stopvalves with easyclean covers should be used where the stopvalve is highly visible, particularly where hygiene is important. The combined stopvalve anddraining tap enables easy isolation with a draining facility. The Pegler Yorkshire stopvalve range is available with union endsallowing easy removal of the valve without the need to disturbfixed pipework.
