Deep Sea Mining: From the Experimental to the Industrial Phase<br />

IHC Deep Sea Dredging & Mining (IHC DSDM,<br />
part of IHC Merwede) designs, builds <strong>and</strong> maintains<br />
high quality, remotely operated marine excavation<br />
<strong>and</strong> slurry transport systems. The largest technical<br />
challenge in this sector is to define the parameters<br />
for the excavation process for deep water areas<br />
(>2000m). However, the existing offshore industry<br />
can support the design process with know-how, for<br />
example, about riser technology. New to develop<br />
are the vertical ore transport systems (pumping<br />
technology). Lab tests, simulations (DEM) <strong>and</strong><br />
CFD are important aspects in the development of<br />
the deep water mining installations, whereas DEM<br />
simulations are of particular importance in defining<br />
rock characteristics in relation to the excavation<br />
process.<br />

Jan Willem has over 25 years experience<br />
performing various management functions within<br />
engineering <strong>and</strong> business development. Holding<br />
a Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering,<br />
technology has always been his passion. In his career,<br />
this has expressed itself in companies associated with<br />
high end technology like Fontijne Holl<strong>and</strong> <strong>and</strong> IHC<br />
Merwede. At IHC Merwede, he has been responsible<br />
for the engineering <strong>and</strong> production of the first deep<br />
water dredging installations <strong>and</strong> the set up of a new<br />
global network of service <strong>and</strong> support activities.<br />
He started his current position in 2007 with the<br />
assignment of the development of the new market<br />
for the deep sea mining industry including new<br />
technology as an extension of the IHC Merwede’s<br />
product portfolio.
