Friends of the Orphans Mission Friends of the Orphans is dedicated to improving the lives of orphaned, abandoned and disadvantaged children through our support of the Nuestros Pequeños Hermanos/Nos Petits Frères et Soeurs (NPH/NPFS, Spanish and French for “Our Little Brothers and Sisters”) network of orphanages in Latin America and the Caribbean. Friends supports NPH through fundraising and volunteer efforts. Together, we transform the lives of children by creating families for life through values of unconditional love, shared responsibility and education. This enables children to grow into caring and productive members of their communities. By making a difference in the lives of the children, our supporters lives may be enhanced as well. Since its founding in 1954 by Father William B. Wasson, NPH has assisted nearly 16,000 children and currently cares for more than 3,700 in Bolivia, the Dominican Republic, El Salvador, Guatemala, Haiti, Honduras, Mexico, Nicaragua and Peru. He returned to NPFS, where he had been raised since the age of eight, and asked for help. He is now one of 100 young adults helping manage the NPFS Angels of Light program. Many of them are Hermanos Mayores (Spanish for “Older Brothers and Sisters”) who grew up at the NPFS home. At left: Hermano Mayor Richard joined NPFS at the age of 11 and is the home’s first medical student. After the earthquake, he became a volunteer doctor at the NPFS St. Damien Hospital while continuing his school work.
From the President/CEO and Chair of the Board Dear Friends, Fulfilling our mission of transforming the lives of orphaned, abandoned and disadvantaged children was never more important than it was last year. In the wake of the Haiti earthquake in January 2010, your unwavering generosity and dedication allowed Friends of the Orphans to not only meet our annual fundraising goals, but to raise an additional $2.1 million in monetary donations and $12.8 million in gifts in-kind for relief efforts following the tragedy. We speak for the staff and board when we say thank you for your tremendous support! In the months after the earthquake, Friends of the Orphans and NPH quickly established many programs to address the immediate needs of children affected. These initiatives continue to grow and your contributions have significantly impacted countless lives. They include: • Fr. Wasson Angels of Light Schools: An on-site primary school with room for 750 children and an additional eight schools offsite serving more than 1,100 children. • St. Louis Child Protection Camp: A temporary home located in Tabarre with eventual capacity of 350 children. • St. Anne Baby House: A rented space for up to 40 children, 6 years and under. • Maternity and Neo-Natal Wards at St. Damien Hospital: To provide care to the most vulnerable populations - pregnant women and infants. • Expansion of the St. Germaine Rehabilitation Center: To address ongoing orthopedic and prosthetics issues for those who lost limbs and for adult stroke patients. We are proud of our staff and volunteers who cohesively banded together to respond to the extreme challenges in Haiti while still maintaining our commitment to all of the children of NPH. It was an exceptional effort by all, with initiatives and outcomes such as: • The final-phase implementation of our three-year strategic plan, which was created in 2007 and guided our short and long-term growth. We are utilizing that plan as the building block for our current 2011-14 strategic plan. We are proud to note that by revenue, Friends of the Orphans is now in the top 5% of fundraising organizations in the U.S.! • In Nicaragua late last year, after the completion of a five-year construction build out, we relocated the final 150 pequeños to our brand new home, Casa Padre Wasson, to join their brothers and sisters already living there. The new home and grounds provide expanded opportunities for learning, living and transformation. The pequeños are embracing their new home and adjusting well. Sharon Saxelby at NPH/NPFS Haiti’s Fr. Wasson Angels of Light Day Camp This year’s efforts were a continuation of the work to unify six offices, a bold step which is bearing great fruit. Between 2006 and 2010, Friends of the Orphans increased cash contributions to the children from $5.029 million to $8.959 million while reducing the cost of each dollar raised. This is especially significant and cause for celebration during the difficult economic times we have all endured. Your unfailing commitment to raising children and transforming lives is the reason we have made these strides. We are extremely grateful. Each day brings Friends of the Orphans new challenges and new opportunities for growth, and we welcome them all with optimism. The daily transformations we see in more than 3,700 children in nine countries would not be possible without your support. 2010 was an especially poignant year in many ways and, to you, we extend our deepest gratitude. Each and every donor expands our circle of support, and by embracing the children inside the circle, you are truly restoring hope.
