Helping the Community One of Fr. Wasson’s founding philosophies was to be responsible and share with others. As a result, all of the NPH homes assist people in their communities in a variety of ways. The homes with their own schools offer scholarships to local children and those with clinics provide health care services to thousands of children and adults each year. Other programs include offering vocational education to unemployed adults in the Dominican Republic, providing child daycare to working mothers in Honduras and Nicaragua, and assisting children living at a garbage dump in Mexico. In addition, the homes provide disaster relief when needed. As a result of the 7.0 earthquake on January 12, Friends and NPH/NPFS suffered the tragic loss of staff, volunteers and family members, and extensive facility damage. Support for the relief effort came quickly from generous people around the world, as well as from the other NPH homes. For example: • Children in Bolivia donated over $200 of their own money. • The older youth in Honduras collected donations on the streets of Tegucigalpa and by going door-to-door and raised more than $5,000. • 35 children in Mexico volunteered to sort, pack and load supplies at the Red Cross. • The Dominican family worked tirelessly to obtain, load and directly deliver supplies, including over 1,700 cucumbers from their own gardens. By year’s end, NPH/NPFS had assisted over one million people.
