Friends of the Orphans Mission
Friends of the Orphans is dedicated to improving the lives of orphaned, abandoned and disadvantaged children through our support
of the Nuestros Pequeños Hermanos/Nos Petits Frères et Soeurs (NPH/NPFS, Spanish and French for “Our Little Brothers and Sisters”)
network of orphanages in Latin America and the Caribbean. Friends supports NPH through fundraising and volunteer efforts.
Together, we transform the lives of children by creating families for life through values of unconditional love, shared responsibility
and education. This enables children to grow into caring and productive members of their communities. By making a difference in
the lives of the children, our supporters lives may be enhanced as well.
Since its founding in 1954 by Father William B. Wasson, NPH has assisted nearly 16,000 children and currently cares for more than
3,700 in Bolivia, the Dominican Republic, El Salvador, Guatemala, Haiti, Honduras, Mexico, Nicaragua and Peru. In 2010, NPH
outreach programs assisted over one million children and adults in Haiti alone.

On the Cover: After losing his cyber café business in the earthquake, Kenson no longer had a way to pay his
rent. He returned to NPFS, where he had been raised since the age of eight, and asked for help. He is now
one of 100 young adults helping manage the NPFS Angels of Light program. Many of them are Hermanos
Mayores (Spanish for “Older Brothers and Sisters”) who grew up at the NPFS home. At left: Hermano Mayor
Richard joined NPFS at the age of 11 and is the home’s first medical student. After the earthquake, he
became a volunteer doctor at the NPFS St. Damien Hospital while continuing his school work.

Dear Friends,
Fulfilling our mission of transforming the lives of
orphaned, abandoned and disadvantaged children was
never more important than it was last year. In the wake of
the Haiti earthquake in January 2010, your unwavering
generosity and dedication allowed Friends of the Orphans
to not only meet our annual fundraising goals, but to raise
an additional $2.1 million in monetary donations and
$12.8 million in gifts in-kind for relief efforts following
the tragedy. We speak for the staff and board when we
say thank you for your tremendous support!
In the months after the earthquake, Friends of the
Orphans and NPH quickly established many programs to
address the immediate needs of children affected. These
initiatives continue to grow and your contributions have
significantly impacted countless lives. They include:
• Fr. Wasson Angels of Light Schools: An on-site primary
school with room for 750 children and an additional
eight schools offsite serving more than 1,100 children.
• St. Louis Child Protection Camp: A temporary home
located in Tabarre with eventual capacity of 350
children.
• St. Anne Baby House: A rented space for up to 40
children, 6 years and under.
• Maternity and Neo-Natal Wards at St. Damien
Hospital: To provide care to the most vulnerable
populations - pregnant women and infants.
• Expansion of the St. Germaine Rehabilitation Center:
To address ongoing orthopedic and prosthetics issues
for those who lost limbs and for adult stroke patients.
We are proud of our staff and volunteers who cohesively
banded together to respond to the extreme challenges in
Haiti while still maintaining our commitment to all of the
children of NPH. It was an exceptional effort by all, with
initiatives and outcomes such as:
• The final-phase implementation of our three-year
strategic plan, which was created in 2007 and guided
our short and long-term growth. We are utilizing that
plan as the building block for our current 2011-14
strategic plan. We are proud to note that by revenue,
Friends of the Orphans is now in the top 5% of
fundraising organizations in the U.S.!
• In Nicaragua late last year, after the completion of a
five-year construction build out, we relocated the
final 150 pequeños to our brand new home, Casa
Padre Wasson, to join their brothers and sisters
already living there. The new home and grounds
provide expanded opportunities for learning, living
and transformation. The pequeños are embracing
their new home and adjusting well.

This year’s efforts were a continuation of the work to
unify six offices, a bold step which is bearing great fruit.
Between 2006 and 2010, Friends of the Orphans increased
cash contributions to the children from $5.029 million to
$8.959 million while reducing the cost of each dollar
raised. This is especially significant and cause for
celebration during the difficult economic times we have
all endured. Your unfailing commitment to raising children
and transforming lives is the reason we have made these
strides. We are extremely grateful.
Each day brings Friends of the Orphans new challenges
and new opportunities for growth, and we welcome them
all with optimism. The daily transformations we see in
more than 3,700 children in nine countries would not be
possible without your support. 2010 was an especially
poignant year in many ways and, to you, we extend our
deepest gratitude. Each and every donor expands our
circle of support, and by embracing the children inside
the circle, you are truly restoring hope.

Statement of Financial Position
2010 Treasurer’s Report
In 2010, Friends of the Orphans raised 41% more in revenue
(before donated services and materials) than in 2009 and
increased our operating support (before donated materials
and supplies) for the NPH homes by 58% over the prior year.
What an accomplishment in a difficult economic
environment. We are grateful to the many donors who
made this possible!
The economy over the past few years has continued to be a
challenge for all of us in our fundraising efforts. Our
interest and dividends were up 9%, we incurred a realized
gain on investment amounting to $55,420 and Special Event
income was up by 23%. Our key operating indicator in our
annual audit report shows our cash flow from operations
improved from a negative $1,252,637 in 2009 to a negative
$101,819 in 2010. While non-profit organizations cut back
on program activity to compensate for decreased revenue
in this time of economic stress, our national board made a
conscious decision to maintain Friends’ support of the
children in this difficult year. This decision further
contributed to our deficit this year. Our 2010 Statement of
Activities reflects a net increase in assets from operations
of $163,833.
As of 12/31/2010
Despite this tough year and setback, the organization
continues to maintain a healthy financial position and
balance sheet.
We will continue to closely monitor our financial
performance through this challenging economic period and
will take actions to ensure that we will always be there for
the kids of NPH just as we are for our own children. Our
staff is implementing their fundraising plans, but we cannot
succeed without your support. The costs to raise a child
have increased due, in particular, to a sharp rise in food
and medical costs. We hope that you will continue to keep
the children of NPH uppermost in your hearts and minds.

The Arizona Irrevocable Endowment Trust fund was established in 1987 and is managed by the trustee, Wells Fargo. All
interest, dividends and realized gains from this fund are restricted to and for the benefit of the NPH orphanage in
Cuernavaca, Mexico, areas served by NPH Mexico, or needy children in other areas of the world. The stated purpose of
this trust is to protect principal which shall generate income. At 12/31/2010, 34% of the assets were in Fixed Income,
47% in Equities, 9% in Real Assets, 9% in Complementary Strategies, and 1% in Cash & Cash Equivalents.
Friends has a 50% beneficial interest in the Natalie Proctor trust and receives 50% of the net income of this trust
managed by JP Morgan Chase Bank. At 12/31/2010, 35% of the assets were in Fixed Income, 52% in Equities, 4% in
Cash Equivalents and 9% in Other Assets.
This gift from the Elizabeth Granzow estate was given for the orphans’ immunization program at the NPH orphanage
in Cuernavaca, Mexico, and further to provide scholarships to educate an orphan a year at a specified nursing
college in the U.S. On January 6, 2010, a State of Minnesota District court ruling broadened the use of these funds
to include in addition to these programs other specific tax-exempt purposes of the orphans’ health and medical
needs, and higher education, graduate, vocational, and professional study. These funds are invested in a laddered
portfolio of AAA government agency notes and a money market account.
The Friends of the Orphans Cash Reserves Account represents cash operating reserves and is invested in a money
market account through Bank of America. This account was covered under a temporary U.S. Treasury guarantee
program which expired on September 19, 2009. These funds will be allocated among various banks so that each
account balance will be fully insured by the FDIC.
Friends previously received from William and Mary Wasson, parents of our founder Fr. William
Wasson, an undivided 1/4th interest in approximately 100 acres located in Arizona. Its
annual value is determined by appraisal.

Helping the Community
One of Fr. Wasson’s founding philosophies was to be
responsible and share with others. As a result, all of
the NPH homes assist people in their communities in a
variety of ways. The homes with their own schools offer
scholarships to local children and those with clinics
provide health care services to thousands of children
and adults each year. Other programs include offering
vocational education to unemployed adults in the
Dominican Republic, providing child daycare to working
mothers in Honduras and Nicaragua, and assisting children
living at a garbage dump in Mexico. In addition, the homes
provide disaster relief when needed.
As a result of the 7.0 earthquake on January 12, Friends
and NPH/NPFS suffered the tragic loss of staff, volunteers
and family members, and extensive facility damage.
Support for the relief effort came quickly from generous
people around the world, as well as from the other NPH
homes. For example:
• Children in Bolivia donated over $200 of their own
money.
• The older youth in Honduras collected donations on
the streets of Tegucigalpa and by going door-to-door
and raised more than $5,000.
• 35 children in Mexico volunteered to sort, pack and
load supplies at the Red Cross.
• The Dominican family worked tirelessly to obtain, load
and directly deliver supplies, including over 1,700
cucumbers from their own gardens.
By year’s end, NPH/NPFS had assisted over one million
people. Relief efforts included medical treatment, food
and water distribution, and the creation of programs for
displaced children.

Highlights of 2010
Connecting Supporters and Children
The Child Sponsorship Program continues to connect caring
people in the U.S. with the children of NPH. Sponsors
generously donate the funds necessary to transform the
children’s lives while also providing guidance, encouragement
and emotional support. This relationship helps the children
develop self-esteem and reinforces the life lessons they are
taught at NPH.
Seeing Our Support in Action
Friends of the Orphans organizes trips to the NPH homes on a
regular basis, making arrangements for transportation,
accommodations and activities. These visits allow supporters
to see first-hand how they are helping transform the lives of
children who once struggled to survive. Some trips include
work projects, such as gardening or constructing facilities.
Raising Awareness and Funds
The regional offices of Friends of the Orphans organize local
events to raise awareness of Friends as well as funds for the
NPH homes. Events vary from fun runs to galas. In addition,
supporters plan and host their own events, such as concerts
and cocktail parties, and giving campaigns to benefit Friends
and the children of NPH. In 2010, there were 57 supporter
events and campaigns for Haiti earthquake relief, yielding
$760,337, and 10 for general support, yielding $38,151.

Giving Supplies and Hope
In-kind gifts represent an enormous opportunity to augment cash donations to help meet the daily operating needs
of the NPH homes. Containers are shipped by the Friends office in Miami, FL, on a regular basis. In 2010, generous
individuals, companies and organizations donated medical and school supplies, clothing, shoes, housewares and
other items valued at more than $13.4 million, up from $9.9 million in 2009. This allowed us to send sixteen 40’
containers to Haiti, as well as one container to the Dominican Republic. We also sent a few smaller shipments to
Honduras and items were able to reach our other Central American homes. Generous partners also donated services
as well as provisions, gift certificates and merchandise valued at over $200,000 for regional special events.
Serving at the Homes and Locally
The Friends International Volunteer Program sends qualified individuals, couples and families to support the staff and
children living at the NPH homes. In 2010, 159 applications were processed. A total of 81 U.S. volunteers served at the
homes, saving NPH an estimated $305,000 in salaries.
The entire Friends and NPH family mourned the loss of volunteer Molly Hightower from Port Orchard, WA, and visitor
Ryan Kloos of Phoenix, AZ, who were killed in the Haiti earthquake. Volunteer Erin Kloos was severely injured, but
has made great strides in her recovery and is now attending medical school. Rachel Prusynski, who was visiting Molly,
was also injured. Since then, she has worked tirelessly to support Friends and NPH. The stories of these special young
people resulted in a rally of financial and community support and even inspired others to step forward and volunteer to
help children in need.
Locally, 888 volunteers gave 12,841 hours during the year by:
• Serving on the national and regional Boards of Directors,
and committees
• Assisting with office tasks such as filing,
copying and mailing
• Translating letters to/from sponsors
• Working at special events
• Hosting visiting children

(FWLEI) is a nonprofit, nonsectarian
501(c)(3) organization incorporated in
Delaware in 1995. The purpose and
mission of FWLEI is to create a
substantial and growing financial
corpus (the Endowment) that will
generate income and help provide
long-term financial stability for
Nuestros Pequeños Hermanos.
Directors are nominated by Friends
and elected to represent geographic
areas paralleling the regions of the
Friends offices. The Executive
Director of NPH International and
CEO of Friends are ex-officio voting
members of the Board of Directors.
The representative of Friends of the
Orphans Canada is a non-voting
advisory member due to the limitations
of Canadian tax laws. The Friends
offices and NPH Mexico raise funds
for the Endowment. Donors receive
receipts from Friends, which may be
used to obtain deductions from U.S.
taxes as provided by law. FWLEI may
make an annual distribution from
earnings to Friends for support of the
NPH homes.

President’s Letter
Dear Friends,
Thank you so much for your support of the Father Wasson Legacy
Endowment Fund. Because of your generosity, the fund continued to grow
and to provide significant support to the children of NPH. Major milestones
during 2010 were:
• The fund had a net asset value of $10,444,725, crossing the $10 million
milestone for the first time.
• In January 2010, a distribution of $373,000 was made to Friends and NPH.
• The day after the earthquake in Haiti, the board authorized an additional
distribution of $100,000 specifically for emergency relief efforts.
• The full board voted to make a 2010 year-end distribution of $400,000 for
the benefit of the children.
These distributions display the tremendous benefit of the Endowment and
that your gifts keep on giving every year. In little more than two years, the
Endowment has distributed over $800,000 for the benefit of the children of
NPH. The distribution policy established in 2008 allows us to provide 5% of
the market value of the unrestricted funds (assuming we do not violate the
corpus) every single year. In addition, the Endowment has the flexibility to
respond immediately to emergency situations.
We would like to acknowledge the contributions of Mark Teresi, who retired
from the board in 2010. We would also like to acknowledge the excellent
performance of our investment manager, Vic Ziminsky, at Morgan Stanley
Smith Barney with oversight from the board’s investment committee.
The fund has completely recovered from the equity market challenges
in recent years and now has a significant margin in excess of the original
contributions. This result positions the Endowment well for significant
future contributions to the children of NPH.
In closing, we have made a good start towards creating an Endowment
that can support the mission of NPH long into the future. Your continuing
contributions and support are the keys to building an ever-stronger base
for our mission. Right now is an excellent and unique opportunity to
contribute to the Endowment. In commemorating the fifth anniversary of
Father Wasson’s death, the Board of Directors has pledged $100,000 to
match any donations given to the Endowment in 2011. This means that all
contributions made this year (up to a total of $100,000) will be doubled!

2010 Portfolio Management Report
The Father Wasson Legacy Endowment portfolio is
managed by Victor Ziminsky, III, at Morgan Stanley, Smith
Barney. The Endowment board voted to retain Vic as
investment manager in 2010 in recognition of his excellent
results and his long standing support of NPH.
Overall, the portfolio investments increased in value
by 14.9% in 2010, led by strong performance in the U.S.
equity investments. Vic observed that we are in a cyclical
bull market and has allowed the allocation of the portfolio
to equities to remain at the high end of the range to take
advantage of this trend. Overall, investment earnings
and appreciation added $1.25 million to the value of the
endowment in 2010, before distributions and expenses.
The equity portfolio made up 68% of the total portfolio
at the end of 2010. It is balanced by sector and includes
an international component. The largest allocation is to
large domestic U.S. companies. Vic and his associates
look for the best companies in the world to include in the
portfolio, and he finds most of them close to home.
The fixed income portfolio is invested in high quality
bonds and bond funds. The largest allocation is to U.S.
Treasury Inflation Protected bonds (“TIPS”). This reflects
the manager’s view that the long running bull market
in bonds may be coming to an end, so he is taking a
defensive posture in this market.
The board expressed its appreciation to Vic Ziminsky for
this excellent result, and to the investment committee of
the board for their oversight.

Planned Giving: Create a Legacy
Each year, we are saddened by the loss of individuals who have cared so
deeply for the children of NPH. In 2010, we said good-bye to 11 Friends who
generously remembered the pequeños through their bequests. We offer our
deep condolences to their families and friends, and thank them for the generous
support their loved ones gave to Friends of the Orphans.
Matching Gifts
You can multiply the effect of your gift by participating in a matching gift program.
Many employers match charitable donations made by their employees and even
their retirees. A matching gift can often double the size of your gift, increasing the
impact you have on Friends and the children of NPH. Please contact your human
resources department or visit www.friendsoftheorphans.org/match to find out if
your employer will match your contribution. In 2010, there were 31 corporations
and other organizations that gave matching gifts totaling $56,653.
Tribute Gifts
Each year, many donors remember or honor a friend or loved one through a
tribute gift. There were 918 tribute gifts totaling $216,763 in 2010.
