MININGMINING AND THE ENVIRONMENTIt has been estimated that <strong>in</strong> Ontario, 80 million short tons <strong>of</strong> waste mill tail<strong>in</strong>gsmust be disposed <strong>of</strong> annually, preferably <strong>in</strong> eng<strong>in</strong>eered impoundment bas<strong>in</strong>s (Caplice<strong>and</strong> Shikaze, 1970). Tail<strong>in</strong>gs banks have to be stabilized, preferably by aself-susta<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g vegetated cover, such as at INCO <strong>in</strong> Sudbury (Peters, 1968) <strong>and</strong> at theHoll<strong>in</strong>ger gold m<strong>in</strong>e <strong>in</strong> Timm<strong>in</strong>s (Gordon, 1969).M<strong>in</strong>e water <strong>and</strong> tail<strong>in</strong>gs overflows can also cause problems. Much <strong>of</strong> it can berecycled as at INCO, Sudbury. Cyanide from gold m<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g can be oxidized <strong>and</strong> arsenic,associated with silver ores, precipitated by lim<strong>in</strong>g. In uranium m<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g radium removalcan be effected by co-precipitation with sulphate by addition <strong>of</strong> barium chloride, as atDennison <strong>and</strong> Rio Algom M<strong>in</strong>es.Serious problems can arise follow<strong>in</strong>g ab<strong>and</strong>onment <strong>of</strong> a m<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g operation. <strong>The</strong>Ontario M<strong>in</strong>istry <strong>of</strong> Environment is monitor<strong>in</strong>g arsenic leach<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong>to the Moira Riverthrough the ground water from calcium arsenite settl<strong>in</strong>g ponds at the Deloro M<strong>in</strong>eab<strong>and</strong>oned <strong>in</strong> 1963 (M<strong>in</strong>istry <strong>of</strong> Environment, 1973).23
