If we teach students how to learn will they remember more? : The influence of retrieval trainingon recall in L2 vocabulary learning.Michael Lawson, Flinders University, AustraliaMirella Wyra, Flinders University, AustraliaThe mnemonic keyword method has been proved to be a successful and useful technique inforeign language learning. This study examines the effects of manipulation on the internal sectionsof the keyword method focusing on the bidirectional retrieval training. Learners’ ability to makeimages, measured using Vividness of Visual Imagery Questionnaire and Ability to Make ImagesQuestionnaire, is also examined in relation to the vocabulary recall in both directions. Grade 7students studying Spanish as a second language learned 22 Spanish-English word pairs. Data onrecall performance was gathered on five occasions and was analysed using the Hierarchical LinearModelling procedure. The retrieval training was a significant predictor of the bidirectional recall aswas the ability to make imagesF 929 August 2007 17:00 - 18:20Room: 3.67 BékésyPaper SessionMotivational, social and affective processesChair:Anastasia Efklides, Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, GreeceThe relationship between motivation, deep information processing and obtaining a doctoraldegreeMarjon Bruinsma, University of Groningen, NetherlandsEllen Jansen, University of Groningen, NetherlandsWe investigated whether motivation affected deep information processing (DIP) and the time toobtain a doctoral degree. 567 students filled out a self-report questionnaire three times.Achievement data were obtained from departmental administrations. Covariance analyses showedthat students who found the study interesting used more DIP in their first-year; however DIP didnot affect 1st-year-achievement. Further, students with higher expectancy and interest used moreDIP in their second year; however, DIP had a negative affect on 2nd-year-achievement. Finally, students with higher expectancy, affect and DIP, obtained their doctoral degree earlier.Apparently, motivation affects deep-information-processing and both short and long-termoutcomes.Emotional and motivational effects of decorative pictures in knowledge communicationAlwine Lenzner, University of Koblenz-Landau, GermanyWolfgang Schnotz, University of Koblenz-Landau, GermanyAndreas Müller, University of Koblenz-Landau, GermanyHolger Horz, University of Koblenz-Landau, GermanyStudies on text and picture comprehension traditionally focus on effects of instructional pictures.Comparably little attention has been given to the effects of decorative pictures in knowledgecommunication.
