graphophonological processing, in both native and foreign language. This presentation will focuson our first experiment assessing the pronunciation of nasal and mid vowels, non-existent inCroatian (/y/, /ö/, /ã/, /o/, /?/, /e/, /e/). This experiment was conducted with Croatian beginners inL2 French (A1), yet assumed to be expert readers in L1 Croatian. The main goal was to verifywhether Croatian readers, during a reading activity in French - known as an opaque system(Jaffréê, 2003), will apply the grapheme-phoneme correspondence (GPC) rules of their transparentmother tongue (Perfetti, 1989, 1997). The second goal was to observe and to "spot" the specificphenomena of French, assumed to be problematic to Croatian novice readers. From the audiorecordings it will be possible to evaluate the pronunciation of each vowel by identifying thecharacteristic phenomena in relation with L1 Croatian. Thus, we will have more clues about themental representation of French phonological units that Croatian novices have. In the second time, this study will be followed by another experience with a more didactic objective which will be acomparative study of several strategies of learning to read in French as a Foreign Language. Thissecond experience will permit us to evaluate the different teaching practices and, hopefully, todistinguish the most appropriate practices in order to optimize the teaching/learning of reading inFrench to Young Learners.– 578 –
