still populated with students who are not self-regulated. If students are expected to develop moreof their potential for learning through being more self-regulated, autonomous and independent, weneed more research investigating how students can develop metacognitive competences as a partof the learning process. PISA (Programme for International Student Assessment) is a large-scaleinternational assessment project, which aims to measure students’ competencies in Science,Mathematics and Reading. In addition it contains a student questionnaire measuring students’cross curricular competencies, such as learning strategies, motivation and interest in schoolsubjects. In Norway we have developed 13 new items measuring what kind of learning strategiesstudents claim to use when preparing for taking a test in science. The construct has been includedin the Norwegian PISA study as national options. The constructs have been reliability tested, resulting in alpha values over 0,75. Three constructs measure how students prepare for a sciencetest, and students are given questions regarding elaboration strategies, control strategies andmonitoring strategies. 5000 students in Norway have been tested during the spring 2006. Inaddition, 22 students have been interviewed about their understanding of the learning strategyquestionnaire. Results from the national options regarding students’ use of learning strategies willbe discussed based upon the idea that metacognitive awareness may increase both students’achievement level and their understanding of learning. Suggestions will be given for howquestionnaires can be used to help students develop their potential for learning to learn.– 723 –
